5 Message by Philip Chong Mau Kiong District 3310 Governor Message by Michael Yee Yik Fah District Governor Rotary Club of Kuching Central is a club of giants! You have big, strong and friendly outgoing President Ng Yaw Hua. You have a very powerful Past District Governor in Haji Andre Suharto, a very active and versatile immediate past Assistant Governor in Frankie Ong, and his charming wife Pauline. You have one of the best District Conferences with the best hospitality by the Rotary Club of Kuching Central. You did the biggest RYLA in the District so far. The Trans Borneo End Polio Ride ended here in Kuching. This list of your club s big achievements can go on and on. Suffice to say that I am really sitting among giants when I am with Rotary Club of Kuching Central. The great tradition of continuity and goodwill in the leadership transition of Rotary clubs is what makes our organisation unique and great. I thank and congratulate outgoing President Ng Yaw Hua and outgoing First Lady Kitty and the Board of Directors for completing a great Rotary year. I believe you have made a difference in the lives of people. Surely the year has made a difference for you and your loved ones too. Len Nyuk and I enjoyed the year that passed with the enriching experiences, wonderful friendships and service to be a gift to the World. We will cherish these special moments for many years to come. Thank you once again my dear friends. My heartiest congratulations to President Clarence Yong and First Lady Charmain, the Board of Directors, and s of Rotary Club of Kuching Central on your grand installation. I m sure you have a great year to look forward to with Rotary serving humanity in Enjoy Rotary and love humanity! All the best, God bless! Yours sincerely, Philip Chong Mau Kiong Immediate Past District Governor District Rotary International has since October 2014 recognized membership as our organization s top internal priority. The eradication of polio remains Rotary s top external priority. Thus membership growth is the goal of every Rotarian and club. As the incoming club president and club officers, collectively you are leaders charged with making your club attractive to prospective Rotarians. This is your great opportunity to rise to the demands and challenges of leadership and to leave a lasting legacy of developing more club leaders, strong membership growth, and a vibrant club. A good leader has a leadership mindset, is charged up with leadership motivation, and demonstrates leadership behavior. The leadership mindset has several characteristics: the need for achievement, a preference for challenge, and an acceptance of personal responsibility for outcomes. Leadership motivation is initiated, energized, and maintained by goal-directed behavior. Leadership mindset and motivation can only translate into action if leadership behaviors exist, some of these being confidence, risk, interpersonal skills, and social capital. Social capital is incredibly valuable to leaders. The rise of the sharing economy - think of Facebook, LinkedIn, Airbnb, ebay, Uber - and collaborative consumption have energized the idea of social networks. Rotary is the world s first service organization and also probably its first social network. We want to enlarge our membership and bring the benefits of Rotary s social capital to more people to help us realize Rotary Serving Humanity. Rotary can serve humanity only if we have more Rotarians, not less. The Object of Rotary isn t mentioned a lot nowadays but it s in realizing that it describes who we are that enables us to realize our mission: to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. We are asked to expand our social network for the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. assume everyone is on the same pace. ship development is not a one size fits all process. There must be a movement toward one another. We were not meant to walk our Rotary journey alone but with the Rotary community. There must be a movement toward mission. We have enjoyed the benefits of Rotary membership and now it is time to give it away and share it with more people. Such things take time. ship development is a hard and lengthy process. It takes a lot of time and deliberate effort from us leaders to invest in building relationships and increasing our social capital. Think about the following questions: What is your current membership development strategy? How are you measuring membership growth in your club? What opportunities are you offering members to live out what they are learning? What is your current strategy for bringing new people into your club? Is it effective? Many of the changes that clubs need to start experiencing growth are small and incremental. They do not require tons of capital or excessive energy. They often require just a change of perspective. You need to see people as your most important resource. You need to choose who you are trying to reach. You need a plan for how you will reach them. And you need to always be looking for opportunities. You are the All Star Team of new club leaders. Your club is now under new management. You are the new front door. Break the old rules. Implement new ways to get the best out of yourself and your club. Make leadership your calling. The power of calling - or vocation - can beneficially shape individuals, organizations, and society as a whole. It can shape your club and members. It will shape Rotary Serving Humanity in our Rotary Foundation Centennial and beyond, doing good in the world. I wish you a successful and meaningful year of service to your members and your community. Therefore, all clubs must embrace this movement toward the goal of membership. We move toward this goal at our own pace and rhythm. Leaders cannot Michael Yee Yik Fah District Governor

6 Message by Ng Yaw Hua Outgoing Club President Message by Clarence Yong Incoming Club President T he wonderful and life changing journey of my Rotary Presidency began a year ago with some trepidation, even though I can lay claim to be better prepared than most. Leading a vibrant Club with many active and engaged members has its own but very manageable challenges. However, the building blocks laid down by our Club's past presidents has proven to be very solid foundation to stand on. Ultimately, the combination of wise old heads and enthusiastic young members proved to be an irresistible force in touching the many lives of the less fortunate in our Society this past year. In turn, the ability to make a difference has enriched those that have served, and drives them to strive to do more. The Club was able to undertake many projects with the support of s and assistance from friends and supporters of our Rotary Club. A large number were jointly carried out with other Clubs and across District lines. They included RC KK South (GG Clean Water to Kg Sinompuru) RC Miri (Palliative Care Centre in Miri General Hospital) RC Sentosa (Bike to School) RC Singapore & D3420 RC Malang Central (Help the Children-Literacy) RC Miri (Medical Mission to Bario) RC Kuching South (Solar Power Lighting for Chung Hua Middle School No.3) RC Queenstown (SOS Children Village - Manila) D3300 RC Penang & RC Tg Bungah (Gift of Life - Joshua) D3300 RC Damansara West (Gift of Sight) D3300 RC Penang (Gift of Life - Aronika) D3300 RC Penang (School Uniform) D3480 RC Golden Eagle Taipei (Supporting rural students in Taiwan & Philippines) On the local front, we completed GG Clean Portable Water to Melikin Renovation of Community Halls to 3 kampungs in Simunjan Hand over 90 Solar torches to households of 4 villages and longhouses Charity sales for 4 NGOs Eye screening to over 1,000 students in SMK DPHA Gapor Fund raising Through Charity Bowling for Food parcels to the hard core poor A day's outing with the children of Sarawak Autistic Association Organised Sarawak Regional i-quiz Competition RYLA 2015 Kuching to instil Leadership qualities in our Youth End Polio Fun Ride to create Polio Eradication Awareness Projects Service Chair Rotarian Jong Kiam Ngee had a most busy year but was greatly assisted by project proponents who took it upon themselves to ensure their projects were expediently carried out. A special mention goes to IPP Louis Yong for his extensive involvement in most of our local projects. The past year was a watershed moment in our 30- year history with the Club welcoming its first female member inductee in young Andrea Chan. Her batch included another 3 young male inductees, namely Michael Kuan, Calvin Chong and Roland Phang, all in their late twenties and early thirties. Two of these 4 members were Past Presidents of our partnered Rotaract Club. These pioneer female and youthful male inductees have added a dash of vibrancy: with membership numbers at its highest ever at 45. The newest members have all unhesitatingly undertaken assignments asked of them, and shown leadership qualities by leading various Club projects. Well done Club ship Chair PP Kho Ping, who was also my sponsor 12 years ago. Club International Chair PP Thomas Ngu has also worked in overdrive to spur Club members and spouses to visit over 30 Clubs' Installation and Anniversary celebrations throughout D3310, and beyond. This encouraged record numbers of members and spouses to attend Pan Borneo Meet in Labuan, District Assembly in Johor Bahru, and District Conference in Chiangmai. Our presence was also felt at Singapore Intercity Meeting, Manila Zone Institute, RI Convention, and other District Conferences. Sister Club tri-annual renewal agreements were signed with D3620 RC Seosan, D3300 RC Tanjung Bungah and RC Malacca over the past year. His enthusiasm for all things Rotary and his generosity knows no bound, and has raised RCKC profile prominently among D3310 Rotarians and beyond. There was a marked increase in activities for our youths this past year. The i-quiz competition in partnership with D3300 RC Bandar Sunway for the Sarawak region was held for the first time with participation from 60 Interact teams from Interact Clubs throughout Sarawak. The winning team from Lodge International School went on to the Finals and placed 5th nationwide, earning them a partial scholarship at Bandar Sunway College for each of the 3 members. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2015 Kuching was held for a second consecutive year. Both iquiz and RYLA were ably helmed by PP Dr Willie and his team. Our Interactors took part for the first time ever at the 3-day RC Singapore annual top rated Interact Training camp as well as the D3310 Interact Conference held in Muar. In addition, our Rotaractors attended the Rotaract District Assembly for a second consecutive year in Singapore. The highlight of our Youth program was undoubtedly the return visit by D3620 South Korean Youth Exchange Team (short term) to Kuching after 16 of our Rotaractors and Lecturer Advisors paid them an initial visit to Seoul and Seosan. These short term youth exchanges have enriched the experiences of all involved. Cultural knowledge was enhanced, local lifestyles were learned with home stays and friendships were forged. Extensive planning and preparations were ably handled by Andrea Chan and Michael Kuan. I am extremely proud that all five of our Interact sponsored Clubs and both our Rotaract Partnered Clubs achieved RI Presidential citations for This is the accumulation of dedicated hard work by our Rotarians Advisers and Teacher/Lecturer Advisers under the leadership of Youth Chair PP Frankie Yang. Club members continue to contribute generously to The Rotary Foundation with total giving of over USD12,000 last year. AG Frankie Ong led by example as Club Foundation Chair when he & his spouse joined the ranks of Major Donors. Five of our members became Chartered s of the newly formed D3310 Paul Harris Society and seven of our newer members subscribed to Rotary Direct for sustained giving. Another milestone was achieved when RCKC was recognized as a 100% PHF Club by The Rotary Foundation in June of RCKC s extensive activities and contributions met the criteria to achieve Rotary International Presidential Citation (Gold). At District level, yours truly was awarded World Class Club President with other individual awards to AG Frankie Ong, PP Thomas Ngu, Rtn Wong Chen Yi, Rtn Louis Wong and Rtn Spouse Pauline Pui in recognition of our services to District. OC & Club Secretary Ben has to be congratulated on coaching all members to open MyRotary accounts on RI website, thereby receiving the 100% MyRotary Award from IPDG Philip. RCKC upholds the time honour tradition of great fellowship during our Club gatherings with the usual inclusion of family members and active spouses. Club Admin Chair, Incoming President Clarence and his special Advisor Abel Chieng worked tirelessly to ensure a high turnout for all Club events and weekly meetings. This is evidenced by a record 20 members achieving 100% attendance after factoring in time spent on Club projects. There were constant interactions among active members of the four Kuching Clubs with AG Frankie Ong as the catalyst. The presence of over 230 Rotarian guests from 50 Rotary Clubs at this Installation bears testament to the camaraderie that has formed between our members and those from throughout D3310 and beyond. I would like to express my gratitude to IPDG Philip Chong and his spouse Len Nyuk for their constant presence at our Club functions and events, despite their ultra busy schedule. Also, my sincere appreciation and thanks goes to my Board of Directors for guiding the Club with a steady hand. A special mention must be accorded to PDG Hj Andre Suharto and Group 14 AG Frankie Ong who were always ready with the appropriate advice. My journey has been filled with blissful and illuminating moments combined with strong support from my fellow members and their spouses. I wish the same for Incoming President Clarence. To my ever faithful and most supportive Kitty, thank you, thank you, and thank you. Ng Yaw Hua President Rotary Club of Kuching Central Dear Fellow Rotarians, Spouses, and Friends, Rotary s founder, Paul Harris believed that serving humanity is the most worthwhile thing a person can do, RI President John F. Germ said, and that being a part of Rotary is a great opportunity to make that happen. I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity to serve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small opportunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a lifetime to change the world for the better, forever through Rotary s service to humanity, said Germ when he unveiled the annual Presidential theme for Rotary year , Rotary Serving Humanity. I am proud to say the organization we are in today, Rotary International, leads the world in volunteer service. Rotarians are dedicated to serve Humanity with the common goal of Service Above Self. We are an inspiration to others. Let us live up to our goal to always do good in the world by serving Humanity. It is indeed a great honour for me to have been given the opportunity to be the 31 st president of this dynamic service club that has carried out a number of significant projects over the past three decades that has benefited numerous underprivileged and needy people. I would like to congratulate our World Class Outgoing President Ng Yaw Hua and his team of office bearers for an outstanding year, and for achieving the Gold- Level Rotary International Presidential Citation. To President Yaw Hua, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your commitment and unseen dedication in leading the club with great distinction. Your commitment to excellence has inspired others. I will endeavour to continue your good work, although you will be a hard act to follow. I wish to extend my sincere appreciation to Past District Governor Haji Andre Suharto for introducing Rotary to me and for his encouragement for me to take this role on, a decision I didn t make lightly. As I look forward to the new Rotary year, I am excited about the possibilities. I believe all leaders are nothing without a great team, and I know that I will have the greatest club with the best club officers, and directors standing behind me. Not forgetting the excellent Rotary Family spirit that we always enjoy by including our families in our fellowships and service events. We are very proud of this unique tradition. This year marks an important milestone for our club as we will be celebrating our club s 30 th anniversary. I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to all our charter members, past presidents, and members for their hard work and tireless efforts to carry out so many humanitarian projects over the years. May RCKC continue on its quest to serving humanity to the best of its abilities. On behalf of the Rotary Club of Kuching Central, I wish to express our sincere gratitude to our distinguished Guest of Honour District Governor Michael Yee for gracing our installation dinner. Special thanks to Organising Chairman PE Benjamin Lo and his committee for their efforts to make this event a success. I also wish to express my appreciation to our guests, friends, supporters and families of Rotary for your contribution, attendance, and tremendous support. Yours in Rotary, Clarence Yong President Rotary Club of Kuching Central 8 9

In 1942, clubs from 21 nations organized a conference in London to develop a vision for advancing education, science and culture after World War II. That event was a precursor to UNESCO. In 1945, 49 Rotarians went to San Francisco to help draft the UN Charter. Rotary and UN have been close partners ever since, a relationship thats apparent through Polio Plus and work with UN agencies. The 4-way TesT Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions: Of the things we think, say or do Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Polio Poliomyelitis (polio) is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio is incurable, but completely vaccinepreventable. PolioPlus In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.5 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $9 billion to the effort. Global Polio Eradication Initiative The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building. Polio Today According to global polio surveillance data from March 9, 2016, 5 wild poliovirus cases were reported in Pakistan and 1 wild poliovirus case was reported in Afghanistan in In 2015, 74 cases of wild poliovirus were reported: 54 from Pakistan and 20 from Afghanistan. Challenges The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent, due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks. Ensuring Success Every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-toone by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year through These funds help to provide much-needed operational support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment, and educational materials for health workers and parents. Governments, corporations and private individuals all play a crucial role in funding. Rotary in Action More than one million Rotary members have donated their time and personal resources to end polio. Every year, hundreds of Rotary members work sideby-side with health workers to vaccinate children in polio-affected countries. Rotarians work with UNICEF and other partners to prepare and distribute mass communication tools to reach people in areas isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. Rotary members also recruit fellow volunteers, assist with transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support. This Close Campaign Rotary has a growing roster of public figures and celebrities participating in its This Close public awareness campaign, including Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; actresses Kristen Bell and Archie Panjabi; WWE superstar John Cena; supermodel Isabeli Fontana; Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu; action movie star Jackie Chan; boxing great Manny Pacquiao; pop star Psy; golf legend Jack Nicklaus; conservationist Jane Goodall; premier violinist Itzhak Perlman; Grammy Award winners A.R. Rahman; Angelique Kidjo and Ziggy Marley; and peace advocate Queen Noor of Jordan. These ambassadors help educate the public about polio through public service announcements, social media and public appearances
