Campus Communicator FEBRUARY 2017 Resiliency & Recovery: A Presentation by Jennifer Storm Jennifer Storm Jennifer Storm, a survivor of sexual assault who became an expert on victims rights issues, will speak on LGBT Rights/Sexual Assault on Campus at Northern s Wheeling campus. Storm s presentation, free and open to the public, will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, March 20, in the Student Union. To RSVP by March 13, contact Ida Williams at or iwilliams@wvncc.edu. Light refreshments will be provided. The speaker was appointed Victim Advocate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2013 by the governor and was unanimously confirmed by the senate. She is charged with ensuring all crime victims rights and interests are protected at the state level. She oversees a program that assists more than 40,000 crime victims annually with their post-sentencing rights. She is legally required to actively advocate for victims rights before the Department of Corrections and the Board of Probation and Parole. Storm has increased victim registration by 30 per cent in her first three years in office, increased staffing by six full-time positions and manages a budget of $3 million. Her appearance in Wheeling is made possible by a competitive grant awarded to WVNCC through the Diversity for Equity Grant administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the Community and Technical College System. Prior to her current position, Storm joined the Victim/Witness Assistance Program as the organization s second executive director. A private, non-profit organization dedicated to serving victims of crimes, its mission is to reduce the trauma of a crime by empowering and assisting clients in reconstructing their lives through advocacy, support, information and referrals. Before joining VWAP, Storm was the first full-time director of the Statewide Pennsylvania Rights Coalition, a nonprofit coalition dedicated to securing and defending fullyinclusive civil rights for LGBT people in Pennsylvania. During her tenure at Pennsylvania Rights Coalition, Storm worked diligently on obtaining inclusive hate crime legislation. In 2002, the Pennsylvania legislature passed one of the most inclusive hate crime statutes in the country. Gov. Edward G. Rendell appointed Storm as a commissioner to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. She later was appointed to the Homeland Security, Law Enforcement and Justice Systems Advisory committees where she also serves on the Terrorism Prevention and Local Law Enforcement Subcommittee. She was born and raised near Allentown, Pa., and attended Northampton High School. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor of science in rehabilitation services and a master s degree in organizational management from The University of Phoenix. Most recently Storm received a certificate from Cornell University in Conflict Resolution and Dispute Management. 2 zine, Curve Magazine, The Advocate, Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, WE Magazine, Women Magazine and many more. Storm has traveled the country giving keynotes, lectures, workshops and panel discussions regarding victims rights, LGBT rights, addiction and recovery and civil rights. She is the author of four critically acclaimed books on addiction, recovery and victimization: Echoes of Penn State: Facing Sexual Trauma, Picking Up the Pieces Without Picking Up: A Guidebook Through Victimization for People in Recovery, Leave the Light On: A Memoir of Recovery and Self- Discovery and Blackout Girl: Growing Up and Drying Out in America. Ohio Valley Research Consortium President Riley, at left, joins other higher education officials to sign a Memorandum of Understanding. U.S. Rep. David B. McKinley of Wheeling and leaders from eight universities and colleges in the Ohio Valley, including Northern President Riley, came together in late January to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to officially form the Ohio Valley Research Consortium. The Consortium first came together from Congressman McKinley s efforts to diversify West Virginia s economy through investment in research. It will focus on drug addiction and opioid abuse, cyber-security, healthcare and job creation for veterans. Today s signing and the official establishment of the Ohio Valley Research Consortium is great news for our area. Encouraging research and attracting investment will not only strengthen the capabilities of each participating school, but by working together, we can find ways to tackle some of our most pressing issues from access to clean water and affordable healthcare, to strengthening our cybersecurity and preventing further substance abuse, McKinley said. We have created a unique opportunity to increase federal research dollars to the Ohio Valley and I look forward to working with each member of the Consortium to accomplish our goals, he added. Leaders from the participating schools offered praise for the efforts of the full Consortium and for Congressman McKinley s work in establishing this partnership. The Higher Education Research Consortium will provide a platform for colleges and universities to focus on partnerships as the mechanism to identify, research, and propose grounded solutions to issues facing our region. - Vicki L. Riley, Ed.D., President, West Virginia Northern Community College The Ohio Valley is so fortunate to have eight institutions of higher education that provide high quality education. As we look to the future, one of the key components of growth and success in the Ohio Valley will be through regional collaboration. The Ohio Valley Research Consortium is one example of working together to foster economic growth and community development. - Steve Greiner, President, West Liberty University Bethany College is pleased to participate in the collaborative work initiated by Congressman McKinley regarding pressing needs facing our communities in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. Collaborative efforts, such as this one, will only strengthen our joint commitment to healthy communities, quality research, creative solutions and ultimately a stronger presence for transformation across the region. - Dr. Tamara Nichols Rodenberg, President, Bethany College The consortium provides a wonderful opportunity for area colleges to combine their strengths and resources with those of community partners to do research that could really benefit our region. The research experiences for faculty and students will also benefit the academic missions of our campuses. The first research topic, drug abuse awareness and prevention, hits the nail right on the head in terms of importance. I greatly appreciate Congressman McKinley s leadership and vision in bringing us together. - Paul Abraham, PhD Dean, Ohio University Eastern Campus Wheeling Jesuit University looks forward to partnering with our fellow institutions in the Ohio Valley on this new initiative. By combining resources and expertise in areas of research and faculty development, our faculty, students and campus community will benefit greatly. We thank Congressman McKinley for bringing our institutions together and recognizing the positive impact this partnership can have on the Ohio Valley. - Mark Phillips, WJU chief of staff. We are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Ohio Valley Higher Education Research Consortium. Partnering with our neighboring, local institutions will further enhance Belmont College s research initiatives and allow us to share our specialty as a technical college. The Consortium
will bring together great minds for higher education and research, as well as create a significant learning environment for our students. I am grateful to Congressman McKinley for his vision, my fellow presidents for taking the opportunity, and all who helped make this possible. - Dr. Paul F. Gasparro, Belmont College President. Other consortium members include Eastern Gateway Community College and Franciscan University of Steubenville. CIT Success Adam Beatty, instructor in the Computer Information Technology department, is sharing an update about the department s activities during this academic year. He pointed out the school year has been one of the most exciting years for the Computer Information Technology department. During this time CIT has introduced a new Cyber Security program, obtained its highest enrollment in its courses in the prior five years, had two faculty members attend the NASA consortium of West Virginia University, had one faculty member display his musical talents for his students, and the CIT faculty has witnessed their students obtaining competitive internship positions in organizations throughout the Ohio Valley along with alumni enjoying their information technology career. Needless to say, it has been an exciting year for the CIT faculty and students, Adam said. When the fall 2016 semester began, CIT started its Cyber Security program, he explained. Since the program started, the faculty has witnessed an ample amount of enthusiasm from newly enrolled students at WVNCC who major in the program along with returning students who already have obtained a degree from WVNCC. Also, it is with great pleasure to announce that the CIT faculty is now working with four-year colleges and universities so students may continue towards their undergraduate degree after completing the Cyber Security program at WVNCC. Throughout the prior two semesters, the CIT faculty has been blessed with their enrollment being higher than it has in the past five years. Not only have the courses been at its allowed capacity, but their retention also has remained strong. This retention has been relevant to all courses of the CIT program. Before the school year began, two of the CIT faculty members (David Stoffel and Beatty) attended the NASA consortium at West Virginia University. Stoffel attended the consortium to further his systems engineering development knowledge, and Beatty attended the cyber security training. This opportunity provided the CIT faculty more materials to implement into their curriculum. CIT faculty member Jeremy Doolin performed a concert with his wife for students and staff at WVNCC. Mr. and Mrs. Doolin performed various duets, and left the crowd in amazement. It was wonderful having one of our talented CIT faculty members share a talent outside of the information technology realm. Mr. Doolin devotes much of his time towards teaching, preparing the LAN parties, and performing for various WVNCC activities, and we are very thankful for all he does inside and outside of the scope of CIT, Beatty reported. In addition, the CIT students at WVNCC have been fulfilling competitive information technology internship positions. Organizations in the Ohio Valley have taken notice at the talent the CIT students at WVNCC have, and this has provided the students with real-world experience before they enter their information technology profession. Thus, our CIT students of today have full confidence that they will be the information technology leaders of tomorrow and beyond, Beatty said. Lastly, WVNCC CIT alumni members Melisa Beck and Sean Donahoe have experienced wonderful opportunities in their career, Beatty reported. Melisa Beck has utilized her information technology expertise in the legal field at Verbatim Global Compliance and Sean Donahoe has put his information technology skills into being an Instructional Technologist for Jesuit Worldwide Learning. The CIT faculty is proud of its students and alumni, and we look forward to sharing the success of our students and alumni in the future. Celebrating Women s History Month In honor of national Women s History Month in March, WVNCC is hosting a special History Alive Lunch & Learn presentation on all three campuses featuring American icon Betsy Ross. The free and open to the public events will be held at noon, March 28, Room 242, Weirton campus; noon, March 29, Student Union, Wheeling campus; noon, March 30, Room 110, New Martinsville campus. Lunch will be available beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Those wishing to attend must RSVP to Student Activities Program Coordinator Ida Williams by March 24 at either or by calling Please specify attendance date and location with the RSVP. Ross will be portrayed by Patty Sue Cooper of the West Virginia Humanities Council who has an associate in applied science degree and has worked as a historical interpreter on Blennerhassett Island State Park in Parkersburg. She has lectured, taught and given workshops and demonstrations at fairs and festivals on antique needlework, tools, and rug hooking. She is a member of Pioneer Fibercrafters Guild, the Daughters of American Pioneers, Wood County Historical Society and has been a Wood County 4H leader. According to biographers, Betsy Ross, a fourth-generation American born in 1752 in Philadelphia, apprenticed with an upholsterer before irrevocably splitting with her family to marry outside the Quaker religion. She and her husband, John Ross, started their own upholstery business. Despite a lack of credible evidence to support it, legend holds that President George Washington requested that Betsy make the first American flag. Betsy died on Jan. 30, 1836, at the age of 84, in Philadelphia. The story of her making the first American flag was shared with the public by her grandson nearly 50 years after her passing. The story goes that she made the flag in June of 1776 after a visit from President George Washington, Robert Morris and her husband s uncle, George Ross. Her grandson s recollections were published in Harper s Monthly in 1873 but today most scholars agree that it was not Betsy who made the first flag. However, Betsy was without dispute a flag maker who, records show, was paid in 1777 by the Pennsylvania State Navy Board for making ship s colours. Although the Betsy Ross House, where she is reputed to have made the flag, is one of the most visited tourist sites in Philadelphia, the claim that she once lived there also is a matter of dispute. The living history program about Betsy Ross will address her life and has been made possible by a grant through the Diversity for Equity program of the Higher Education Policy Commission and the Community and Technical College System in West Virginia. Special Guests Visit WVNCC At left, Curt Hippensteel talks to Karri Mulhern, President Riley and Del. Erikka Storch about the Petroleum Technology program. Prior to the start of this year s West Virginia legislative session in Charleston, Delegate Erikka Storch of Wheeling met with President Riley and members of the WVNCC administrative Cabinet to discuss issues relevant to Northern specifically and to higher education institutions in the state generally. The informal session, featuring lunch, enabled the College to impart much information to Del. Storch who asked numerous questions. Dr. Casey Sacks, newly hired as the vice chancellor of the West Virginia Community and Technical College System, meets with President Riley and members of the Northern Cabinet as part of her visit to WVNCC. She talked about her background and asked numerous questions so that she could become more familiar with Northern. Dr. Sacks previous position was with the Colorado Community College System. In Colorado, she worked in academic affairs with a strong focus on Perkins administration. She has worked closely with business and industry to develop and improve upon community college programming. Dr. Sacks planned to travel in late February to Russia where she was to host a conference around sector workforce development. Weirton Campus offers Free Aerobics A free Aerobics for Seniors class will be offered on the Weirton campus from March 20 to May 3. The class will be conducted from 6-7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in Room 242. The instructor is Carol Teaff, who also is a senior, and registration deadline is March 17. To register, visit the Student Service Center on campus. The Community Education class is designed for older men and women who want to start exercising at a moderate pace or who already exercise and
want to try something new. This is a low impact class with an emphasis on stretching and simple movements to music. From left are Reece Warren, Angel Moore (SGA/CAB) and Demara Winfry. For each movement, the instructor will demonstrate how to do it the easy way or turn it up a notch so that people who are less fit as well as fit can benefit. Participants should wear loose or stretchy clothing and athletic shoes and bring a bottle of water. American Heart Association Fundraiser New Martinsville campus students held a fundraiser for the American Heart Association during February and raised $40. They sold Go Red for Women bracelets and Red Dress pins, stuffed animals, balloons, cupcakes and cookies. This event was part of the Student Government Association and Student Activities planned events. Math Put to Work Jennifer Lantz, math instructor at the New Martinsville campus, had students in the fall 2016 class of MATH 109, Math for Business and Finance, choose a business and work with one of the owners/employees to show integration of math in the business. Jennifer reached out to the Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce as a resource to identify businessses that would be willing to work with the students. Don Riggenbach, president of the chamber and owner of Riggenbach Tile and Carpet, was happy to be part of this project and he came to watch the final presentations. Participating, from left, are Don Riggenbach, Elizabeth Miller, Thomas Ian Jackson, Elizabeth Jackson, Brenda Whittington, Gara Repco, Brittany Heasley, Kylie Cozart and Jennifer Lantz. Why don t we talk about Vietna m? historical debate, Why Don t We Talk About Vietnam? Ten-year-old Adam chose this topic because both his grandfather and uncle are veterans of the Vietnam War, which has sparked his interest in the subject. Delilah s father, James B. Board, is one of the vets Adam interviewed and featured in his presentation, and the draft cards of her uncle, Rodney C. Board, are part of the display. Both men attended and graduated from Northern right after it opened. Her uncle claims he was at the bonfire where the Thundering Chickens as a Adam Carman mascot was born. Delilah Ryan, associate professor of Adam s mother, Allison, and Delilah history, recently had Adam Carman, have known each other for many a fifth grade student at Glen Dale Elementary in Marshall County, present years, so Delilah was more than happy to provide these items along with the his 2017 Social Studies Fair project books in his display. The three books to her History 101 World Cultures II in his display are considered some class. Adam s topic focused on loof the premier works concerning the cal veterans and the major modern From left, Delilah Ryan, Adam and Mom, Allison Carman. Vietnam period historiography plus they are available to interested readers by checking with Delilah or Northern s LRC. Delilah used Facebook to do a Live Feed of the presentation. Delilah noted that Adam is very community and civic focused and this New Martinsville campus presentation gave him a chance to share his findings in front of an audience.
Getting the Job Done Jack Midcap, cleaning the carpet in room 110. Both Jack Midcap and David Kingry have been working hard to keep the New Martinsville campus clean. With the bad weather comes the challenge of keeping the floors and carpets clean. Jack is seen here working on room 110, which gets used quite often for meetings and events for the community. One of the major projects David began soon after he started in December was to get the gate around the service center to move more easily. He found that after years of use, the wheels had worn off and became twisted in the track. He and Jack worked to replace them and now the gate does open and close more smoothly. PCT Practice Time This is the time of the semester when the Patient Care Technician students start asking for volunteers of family, friends and staff so they can practice their skills in drawing blood. The classroom was filled with several people waiting their turn. In the chair above is LeeAnn Blair, New Martinsville campus librarian. Adi Kline, instructor, watches as Kristi Dalrymple feels for the vein in LeeAnn s hand. LeeAnn also gave two other students an opportunity to practice by letting them use both her arms. What a volunteer for doing triple duty! Weirton campus tutor Amy Howell, above, volunteers to help Patient Care Technician students on Feb. 7 and 8. The students were practicing lab draws and glucose checks from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. David Kingry working on the gate around the Service Center. Mardi Gras Fun The Weirton campus helped sponsor the Weirton Heights Rotary Club s Mardi Gras Gala fundraiser. The event was held Feb. 25 at Williams Country Club in Weirton and proceeds benefited the new Weirton Medical Center Breast Care Center. A goal of raising $50,000 was met, with tickets for the event being sold out as well. Lisa Soly and Tina Edwards attended to represent the College. Sharing Knowledge Local attorney Mark Colantonio shared his collection of historical documents with Frank DeCaria s United States Since 1865 class on March 1 on the Weirton campus. He wanted to share his collection and knowledge with WVNCC. Mark Colantonio speaks to the class.
