PAC-12 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK - WEEK ONE OFFENSE: Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA DEFENSE: D.J. Welch, LB, Oregon State SPECIAL TEAMS: John Bonano, PK, Arizona WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Running back Johnathan Franklin of UCLA, linebacker D.J. Welch of OREGON STATE and kicker John Bonano of ARIZONA have been named Pac-12 Players of the Week in football. Franklin, a senior from Los Angeles, Calif., rushed for a career-best 217 yards on on 26 carries (8.3 average) and hauled in three passes for 59 yards (19.6 average) and a touchdown in a win over No. 16 Nebraska to earn his second-straight Pac-12 Player of the Week honor. He became the seventh Bruin to eclipse the 3,000-yard rushing mark and moved into seventh place on UCLA s all-time rushing list. Through two games this season, Franklin is the NCAA s leading rusher, averaging yards per game on the ground. Welch, a sophomore from Palm Desert, Calif., tied for the team lead with seven tackles, including two tackles for loss (8 yards) in a 10-7 win over No. 13 Wisconsin. Oregon State s defense held the Badgers to 207 yards of total offense, including just 35 yards on the ground, and kept Wisconsin running back Montee Ball out of the end zone, snapping a 21-game touchdown streak for the 2011 Heisman finalist. Bonano, a senior from Salinas, Calif., was perfect in the kicking game and scored a career-best 15 points in a win over No. 18 Oklahoma State. He converted field goals of 22 yards, 24 yards, and 46 yards and was 5-5 on PAT attempts. Bonano kicked off 11 times, logging 4 touchbacks and contributing Oklahoma State s average starting field position at their own 24 yard-line. Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were running backs Ka Deem Carey of Arizona, Isi Sofele of California, Christian Powell of Colorado and Kenjon Barner of Oregon, wide receiver Robert Woods of USC, tight end Chris Coyle of Arizona State and quarterback Sean Mannion of Oregon State. Also nominated on defense were linebackers Carlos Mendoza of Arizona State, J.P. RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Pac-12 had great success against teams from other BCS conferences, posting a 6-1 record with wins over three teams ranked in the AP Top 25 as OREGON STATE knocked off No. 13 Wisconsin, UCLA defeated No. 16 Nebraska, and ARIZONA dispatched No. 18 Oklahoma State. The last time the league defeated three AP ranked teams in one day? You need to go back to January 1, 1985 when No. 14 UCLA defeated No. 13 Miami in the Fiesta Bowl, No. 18 USC beat No. 6 Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, and No. 4 Washington upended No. 2 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. PAC-12 COACHING DEBUTS A SUCCESS: There were 28 teams with new head coaches in the FBS this season. Of those 28, six have started the season with 2-0 records. 3 ZERO TO 60: Pac-12 teams have been operating at a furious pace through the first two weeks of the season as eight teams are averaging better than 30 points per game, while six teams are racking up better than 440 yards of total offense, led by UCLA s yards per game. Here s a look at the numbers: 0 - Successful 2-point conversions by the opposition against the Pac- 12 in five attempts. 1 - UCLA senior RB Johnathan Franklin s national rankings in rushing (215.5) and all-purpose (249.5) yardage. 2 - Four players had two interceptions each last weekend - Arizona s Jared Tevis, Arizona State s Carlos Mendoza, Stanford s Ed Reynolds, USC s Dion Bailey. 3 - Victories over ranked opponents Saturday. 4 - Pac-12 teams with three or more interceptions this season. Arizona State has forced an NCAA-leading 6 interceptions. 5 - Total number of penalties committed by ASU this season. 5 USC TABBED TO WIN PAC-12 TITLE IN PRESEASON MEDIA POLL UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - USC is the favorite to win the 2012 Pac-12 Conference football title in a preseason poll of media members who cover the league. The Trojans were listed in the top spot in the North Division by 117 of the 123 voters participating in the poll, collecting 729 points. 102 of those pollsters tabbed the Trojans to come out on top in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Utah was picked to finish second in the South Division, collecting one first-place vote in the balloting for the division race. Arizona State claimed three of the other five first-place votes, with each of those members of the media casting a vote for the Sun Devils to capture the Pac-12 title. Oregon was picked to win the North Division, garnering 732 points and 117 first place votes, while Stanford, which tallied five of the other six first place votes, was pegged to finish second in this year s poll. California, predicted by the voters to finish fourth in the North Division, claimed the remaining first place vote. The media poll has correctly selected the Conference Champion in 28 of 51 previous polls, including 11 of the last 12. 7 PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME The Pac-12 Championship Football Game will take place Friday, November 30 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and telecast to a national audience on FOX. The Championship game will match the winner of the North Division vs. the winner of the South Division. The game will be played on the campus of the division winner with the best overall conference record. The winner of the Pac-12 Championship will earn the league s automatic BCS berth. TIE-BREAK PROCEDURES TO DETERMINE AND CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PARTICIPANTS & HOST The division winner will be determined by the record in all games played (both divisional and cross-divisional) within the conference. In the event of a tie, the following procedures will be applied to determine the Pac-12 Championship Game representatives from each division: Two-Team Tie. 1. Head-to-head competition between the two tied teams. a. If no game is played between the two tied teams or that game ends in a tie, the following tie-breaking procedures would be applied: 2. Record in games played within the division 3. Record against the next highest placed team in the division (Based on record in all games played within the conference), proceeding through the division. 4. Record in common conference games. 5. Highest BCS Ranking following the last weekend of regular-season games. 6. Total number of wins in a 12-game season. The following conditions will apply to the calculation of the total number of wins: a. Only one win against a team from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision or lower division will be counted annually. b. Any games that are exempted from counting against the annual maximum number of football contests per NCAA rules (current Bylaw ) shall not be included. 7. Coin toss. Multiple-Team Ties. The following procedures will only be used to eliminate all but two teams, at which point the two-team tie-breaking procedure will be applied. 1. Head-to-head (Best record in games among the tied teams). 2. Record in games played within the division. 3. Record against the next highest placed team in the division (based on record in all games played within the conference), proceeding through the division. 4. Record in common conference games. 5. Highest BCS ranking following the last weekend of regular-season games. Pac-12 Championship Game Host The Pac-12 Championship Game Host will be determined by the record in all games played within the conference. Record in common conference games. 5. Coin toss. PAC-12 BOWL ARRANGEMENTS The Pac-12 is in the third year of a four-year bowl cycle. The Pac-12 Conference has agreements with seven bowl partners. The lineup is led by the Rose Bowl presented by Vizio, which is the destination for the Pac-12 champion, unless said champion is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final Bowl Championship Series rankings. If that were the case, the Pac-12 champion would play in the BCS National Championship Game hosted by the Discover Orange Bowl. Regardless of the disposition of the Pac-12 champion, a second Pac-12 team may be selected for an at-large berth in the Bowl Championship Series in any given year and other Pac-12 bowl partner arrangements provide for that occurrence. In addition to the Rose Bowl presented by Vizio, Pac-12 bowl partners include, in order of selection, the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Bridgeport Education Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco, and the Gildan New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque.
