3 PAC-12 BASEBALL NOTES Arizona (13-3) The No. 6 Wildcats had an eight-game winning streak going before falling to No. 8 Rice on Tuesday. At weekend s end, the Cats were off to their best start ever under head coach Andy Lopez and the program s best start since going 14-2 in Junior shortstop Alex Mejia is continuing to contribute, hitting.390 on the season and boasting a team-leading.576 slugging percentage. He also ranks third on the team with 14 RBI. Arizona State (11-4) The No. 11 Sun Devils took two out of three at Long Beach State last weekend. Junior centerfielder Andrew Aplin had a good series as he hit.308 with four hits, two RBI, four runs scored and had a fielding percentage. Aplin also extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 14. On the mound, RHP Trevor Williams earned his fourth consecutive win of the season, going a career-long eight innings on Sunday in a 6-1 victory over LBSU. He gave up only one earned run, struck out four and walked two. In 25 innings pitched this season, the sophomore has a 1.08 ERA and is holding opponents to a.227 batting average. California (11-4) On Sunday, Cal pitchers did not give up a hit until two outs in the bottom of the seventh as the Golden Bears shut out Nebraska, 4-0, in Lincoln. Sophomore LHP Kyle Porter went 4.0 innings with no hits, one walk and a strikeout to improve to 2-0 on the season. Senior catcher Chadd Krist had an RBI single in the third inning and gave the Bears an insurance run with an RBI double at the top of the ninth inning. His double was the 52nd of his collegiate career, placing him fourth on the school s all-time doubles list. Oregon (12-3) Sophomore RHP Brando Tessar threw a complete-game shutout against UConn on Sunday, giving up only four hits, striking out six and walking two batters en route to No. 17 Oregon s 4-0 win. After surrendering three hits in the first inning but getting out of the bases-loaded jam unscathed, Tessar faced just one batter over the minimum the rest of the way. Tessar s complete game is the first of his career, and his nine innings pitched and six strikeouts were both career highs. Oregon State (11-5) Freshman outfielder/designated hitter Michael Conforto had a huge weekend, batting.467 (7-for-15) with two doubles, a home run and nine RBI over four games in the Nike College Showcase. He drove in at least two runs in every game to help the Beavers go 3-1 on the weekend against the field of West Virginia, Illinois, UConn and then-no. 22 Oklahoma. The No. 25 Beavers outscored their opponents by a total of By hitting safely in all four contests, Conforto extended his season-long hit streak to six games. He is 11-for-25 (.440) with eight runs, three doubles, a home run and 10 RBI during the streak. Stanford (13-2) The No. 2 Cardinal beat then-no. 5 Rice two out of three times in Palo Alto last weekend, marking the third series Stanford has claimed from a top-10 team this season (Vanderbilt, Texas, Rice). Junior RHP Mark Appel had a stellar night on Friday, striking out a career-best 14 in nine full innings. He set a career high for strikeouts for the third consecutive week. Appel allowed two runs in the first inning, but then did not allow another baserunner until the fifth inning. He did not get the decision as the game went 10 innings in Stanford s 4-2 victory, but is 2-1 on the season. UCLA (13-3) The No. 9 Bruins nabbed both Pac-12 weekly awards this week, with sophomore RHP Adam Plutko getting Pitcher of the Week and junior outfielder Jeff Gelalich getting Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks. Plutko tossed his second career complete-game shutout on Friday at then-no. 9 Georgia, logging 11 strikeouts and no walks. Gelalich batted.692 (9-for-13) in the three-game sweep of the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga., including a 4-for-4 performance on Friday night. USC (12-4) Freshman LHP Stephen Tarpley held CSU Bakersfield scoreless and struck out 10 in eight innings on Sunday to lead USC to a 6-0 victory and complete the weekend sweep of the Roadrunners. Senior first baseman Matt Foat and junior infielder Adam Landecker each picked up their eighth multi-hit games of the season while improving their averages to an impressive.429 and.379, respectively. Utah (4-11) Senior shortstop James Brooks batted.474 (9-for-19) over a four-game span, collecting three hits in two separate games. Against Santa Clara on Thursday, he led off the game with a home run and smacked a double in the fifth inning with a runner on base. With the Utes down 1-0 against Columbia on Sunday, Brooks singled to lead off the third inning and eventually scored to tie the game, which Utah ended up winning, 7-1. RANKINGS NCBWA (March 12) 1.
