Delhi horizons Dear Friends: As I near the mid-point of my 10th year as president of SUNY Delhi, I look back with great pride. This college has accomplished so much, including some achievements that were thought to be nearly impossible. Enrollment stands out for several reasons. In 1999, enrollment was at 2,068 students. Since then it has increased by 43 percent to a record 2,974 students. Enrollment was critical to solving the college s financial challenges at the time. Increased enrollment was also necessary to ensure we were operating efficiently and making maximum use of campus facilities. We have achieved our enrollment goals and more. In fact, we have led the State University in the increase in applications (percentage) each of the last two years. We are the leading college of technology and widely recognized as a hot college. Financially, we are much stronger, which is particularly important given New York s financial crisis. We have made significant investments in academic and student life facilities adding a new residence hall, student apartment complex, and field house, creating special collections rooms in the college library, updating the Alumni Hall Hospitality Center, opening a baking lab, and redesigning the agora. Our biggest project a $21.5 million renovation of Farrell Hall is scheduled to begin in January Academically, we have been successful by focusing on academic programs that are unique. We have also significantly expanded the number of baccalaureate programs. Students pursuing bachelor s degrees through SUNY Delhi now account for 20 percent of our enrollment. The reputation of our academic programs has led to a satellite campus in Schenectady that now serves more than 130 baccalaureate students, and we are exploring opportunities to launch similar efforts in other areas across New York State. We have been academic innovators, creating the state s first online RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. These successes have truly been a collaborative effort as you will discover in reading this year s annual report. SUNY Delhi is fortunate to have exceptionally talented and dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to student success. We have reached out to our alumni and friends, and they have been tremendously supportive. Most major new initiatives on this campus have been a direct result of the generosity of our alumni and friends, and I sincerely appreciate the investments they have made. SUNY Delhi is an exceptional college. It is extremely rewarding to see our students mature, learn, and prepare to lead New York s economic revival. It is also heartwarming to meet the many alumni and friends of the college who have embraced our mission and have stepped forward to provide the financial support that allows Delhi to provide superior programs and services. Thank you for all that you do for SUNY Delhi and our students. Sincerely, Candace S. Vancko, Ph.D. President - 2 -

Delhi horizons Enhance Academic Excellence SUNY Delhi continues to receive national recognition for academic quality. U.S. News and World Report recognized SUNY Delhi as one of the leading baccalaureate degree colleges in the north for the second consecutive year. The magazine s 2009 guide to America s Best Colleges ranks Delhi among the Top 50 baccalaureate colleges in the north. Equally important, the guide s statistical reports show that SUNY Delhi stands out among its peers when it comes to key indicators of academic quality including student retention, SAT requirements and selectivity. Other examples that illustrate academic excellence at Delhi include: Student Honors SUNY Delhi continues to prove it offers New York s finest public college hospitality program. The culinary team captured its eighth New York State American Culinary Federation title and swept the regional crown for the fourth time to earn a spot in the ACF nationals in Las Vegas. There, the team captured a silver medal for the second consecutive year Nick Hernandez also earned distinction by becoming the first Delhi student to qualify for the ACF Student Culinarian of the Year competition Gabrielle Dello, a Liberal Arts major from Mount Upton, and Tami Eicholz, a Culinary Arts major from Israel, earned State University Chancellor s Awards for Student Excellence Seven student-athletes earned grade point averages of 3.6 and above to qualify for Academic All-American honors. Professional Honors Three faculty and staff earned the State University s most prestigious award the Chancellor s Award for Excellence. Honorees included: Thomas Recinella, Associate Professor of Culinary Arts, Excellence in Teaching; Joan Townsend, Personnel Associate, Excellence in Professional Service; and Jamie Rotter, Assistant Professor of Culinary Arts, Excellence in Faculty Service. Develop New Programs New program development is a prerequisite to keep college curricula current and relevant. SUNY Delhi is extremely fortunate to have Advisory Councils, made up of industry professionals, to annually review academic programs and make recommendations for the future. Delhi s faculty, many of whom have private sector experience, also monitor industry trends to identify new opportunities. It is a partnership that continues to produce impressive results. The introduction of baccalaureate programs, which began in 1998, is a prime example. In just over 10 years, Delhi has emerged as one of the top rated baccalaureate colleges in the North. Baccalaureate enrollment has grown from 10 students in 1998 to more than 500 today. Baccalaureate programs aimed at non-traditional students in specific markets have produced impressive results with an online RN to BSN program introduced in January 2008 leading the way. The program, the first of its type in New York State, started with an initial enrollment of 20 students, and by Fall 2008, was serving 113 students. Thanks to a $140,000 high needs grant from the State University of New York, enrollment is expected to rise to 175 students in The Capital District is a rapidly growing market for baccalaureate programs as well. SUNY Delhi was invited to offer its BBA in Hospitality Management to place-bound residents of the Capital District in Enrollment has skyrocketed from six students the first year to 130 today with students able to select from majors in Travel and Tourism Management and Business and Technology Management. The Schenectady program s success has led college officials to explore the potential of offering specialized four-year degrees on the campuses of other community colleges around the state. SUNY Delhi s Student Life Division is a leader in new program development as well. The college is committed to providing opportunities for learning beyond the classroom and Delhi s Student Life staff has earned state and national honors for programming excellence. Examples of exemplary programs introduced this past year on the academic and student life fronts include: Baking A new baking lab, funded in part by $150,000 in grants from Senator John Bonacic, has added a new dimension to Delhi s award-winning culinary program. Students can now receive hands-on experience in specialized baking techniques and even pursue a certificate in baking. Electrical Alliances with Con Edison, the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency, Delaware County Electric Co-Op, and Orange and Rockland Utilities will provide electrical students with special training for careers with utility companies. Safety Student safety is a primary concern of parents and students and SUNY Delhi continues to respond on several fronts The SUNY NY Alert system was activated to provide options for sending emergency messages to the campus community by phone, text, or A satellite University Police office began operating in Russell Hall on weekends in Fall University Police officers completed three levels of FEMA s national Incident Management System training New interior and exterior emergency phones were installed in key campus locations. An update of the Emergency Response Plan was completed Eleven - 5 -

Delhi horizons new emergency blue light phones were installed in key campus locations The campus is now equipped with nearly 60 Automated External Defibrillators and more than 100 staff members are trained in their use. Business Etiquette Corporate image consultant Juanita Ecker presented a highly successful program on proper business etiquette that was sponsored by Student Life and the Business and Hospitality Division. Student Organizations New clubs earned official recognition from the Student Senate the Club Managers Association of America, a campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and Think Green. Fast-Start A new orientation program was created to ease the transition to college for new men s and women s soccer team members who arrive on campus early to begin pre-season workouts. Meet/Exceed Enrollment Goals Enrollment is the highest in college history, with 2,974 students enrolling in Fall For the second straight year, Delhi led the entire State University of New York system in terms of percentage increase in applications. A record 5,800 applications for enrollment were received for Fall 2008, which makes the 1,440 accepted students the most academically talented in the college s history. Online Courses SUNY Delhi has made a significant investment to expand access to academic programs by developing courses for online delivery. During the academic year, 116 courses were delivered online to 624 students, a 60 percent increase over the previous year. New Housing Riverview Townhouses, a 70-bed apartment complex adjacent to campus, opened in Fall The complex, financed by the College Foundation, is designed to serve returning students with strong academic and citizenship records. Articulations Transfer student enrollment is up 17 percent, primarily due to an increase in articulation agreements with community colleges. Scholarships The College Foundation and Alumni Association teamed up to provide nearly $30,000 to assist in attracting highlyqualified new students for Fall Above: A shuttle bus provides transportation to and from campus for students who reside at the new Riverview apartment complex, located near the lower campus. About 75 students listened as Juanita Ecker spoke about appropriate attire, proper behavior, conversation during social activities, and dining etiquette. Special Treatment With on-campus housing at peak levels, Residence Life introduced a new programming effort for students housed in triples. They were treated to Three Musketeer bars, T-shirts, triple scoop ice cream socials, and special social and educational activities. Athletics The on-going success of Delhi s athletics programs attracts high caliber student-athletes to the college. Last season, the men s cross country team won its 10th NJCAA Division III National Championship, the men s golf team captured the Region X NAIA Championship, and the women s soccer team qualified for post-season play for the first time in history. Increase Student Retention and Graduation SUNY Delhi is taking its emphasis on student success to a new level. Delhi is one of the first colleges in the country to use retentionrt, a Noel Levitz innovation that combines statistical modeling and real-time data analysis with specialized consulting services to help improve student retention. By using retentionrt, the college will be able to identify students who need special attention before they arrive on campus. The college is also working with Noel Levitz

Annual Report 2008 At a special reception in Alumni Hall, the men s cross country team proudly displayed their trophy from their 10th national championship win. to identify institutional barriers to retention and uncover new opportunities for student success. For example, Noel Levitz research was used to award scholarships to returning students who had been identified as most likely to drop out for financial reasons. Other retention initiatives proving successful on the Delhi campus include: Early Warning An early warning system, designed to identify at-risk students, is producing positive results. An average of 70 percent of students who received an early warning notice passed the course or withdrew. Tutoring Peer and professional tutoring continues to have a positive impact on student performance. Tutoring was offered for more than 100 courses with over 70 percent of students who received tutoring earning a grade of C or better. Grants Perkins funds were earmarked to support an early intervention academic jeopardy program. Student Employment More than 700 students had jobs on campus, thanks to the efforts of the Student Employment Work Group. Scholarships Scholarships to assist returning students are being developed through gifts from faculty and staff donations. The first-ever Resnick Library and Learning Center Endowment Scholarship was awarded Five Student Life Scholarships were awarded to students. Special Programs Counseling Services and the Disabilities Coordinator established a yearlong support group for students with disabilities and led over 40 creative outreach programs, including a new Fitness and Self Esteem for Women support group. Residence Life sponsored over 200 programs and activities. Campus Store Barnes and Noble s College Division was selected to manage the Campus Store, providing students and the campus community with improved service, wider selections, and online sales and merchandising. Other benefits included a better selection of low-priced used books and increased employment and career opportunities for students. Generate Resources State support for SUNY Delhi has been significantly reduced over the past year, creating a critical need to raise funds for scholarships for needy students, academic program support and priority projects on campus. Alumni, parents, faculty and staff, students, and friends of the college are responding to the call for support in many ways: Individuals The annual Alumni and Parent Campaigns set new records. Gifts through the Alumni Phonathon increased 12 percent to an all-time high of $107,298. Support through the Parent Phonathon also rose 12 percent to a record $15,367. Faculty and Staff A total of 205 faculty and staff demonstrated their commitment to students with gifts to the College Foundation totaling nearly $37,000. Class Gift The Student Senate, in honor of the Class of 2008, contributed $5,000 to purchase additional seating for the newly-renovated Agora. Academic Programs The golf and turf industry provided stateof-the-art equipment valued at more than $200,000 for instructional use The 10th Traci Upton, an Information Technology Management major from Sherburne, was hired as one of the first students to work at the new Barnes and Noble-operated Campus Store

Delhi horizons anniversary Kevin Zraly Dinner helped push this scholarship endowment for hospitality management students over the $50,000 mark Boehringer Ingelheim continued its $10,000 annual support for Veterinary Science Technology student assistantships. Special Projects Nearly $30,000 has been raised for the renovation of Farrell Hall through fund-raising events and donations from Student Life staff, the Student Senate and alumni Gary Rice 76 provided the lead gift for new furniture for the Alumni Hall Hospitality Center. Catskill Water Testing Laboratory The lab, the first of its type in New York City s West of the Hudson Watershed Region, officially opened in January Funded through grants from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and Senator John Bonacic, the lab is part of the Center for Excellence in Watershed Applications and Technology- Based Economic Revitalization (COE in WATER), an economic development initiative led by SUNY Delhi and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. Increase Efficiencies Through the Utilization of Technology SUNY Delhi is emerging as a leader through its innovative use of technology to increase efficiencies and improve service to students, faculty and staff. A prime example is the Conference: An Open Discussion on Technology in Education the college hosted last summer. This two-day event attracted 70 academic technologists from leading research universities On sunny days, students make themselves at home on the Agora thanks to sturdy new picnic tables and benches, purchased in part through a gift in honor of the Class of 2008 made by the Student Senate. Delhi Alumnus and wine expert Kevin Zraly 70 (center) visited the Delhi campus in May to meet recipients of the scholarship that is named in his honor, Angela Krohn, far left, and Taylor Church, far right. across the country and from as far away as China. Sponsors for the event included industry leaders Cisco, Novell and Moodlerooms. Examples of how Delhi is effectively using new technology include: Computer and Information Services saved over $300,000 by moving to a new mainframe operating system, online learning platform and open source operating systems. The SUNY Management Resource Tool was introduced to allow managers and supervisors access to current and historical budget and spending information, a move that eliminated an outdated paper reporting system. The Office of Residence Life is working with Computer and Information Services to implement an automated housing module system that will allow students to apply for housing online and provide them with real-time access to their housing status. An online registration and payment system for Family Day was introduced, greatly streamlining the process for the more than 300 families who attend this popular event

Annual Report 2008 Gary Rice 76, owner of Rice s Food Equipment and Consulting Company, (with President Vancko) contributed to the renovation of Alumni Hall s top floor, the home of Signatures, Delhi s student operated restaurant. The Facilities staff formed an energy management work group to develop and implement ways to save money and energy. The ILLiad interlibrary loan software is now operational, which allows students and faculty to request materials online and track the status of their requests The library also launched Serial Solutions, which allows students and faculty to easily link to over 60 different research databases and locate articles from more than 25,000 electronic journals. Maintain and Improve Facilities The State University capital budget included great news for SUNY Delhi. It provided funding for a Facilities Master Plan study that will guide campus improvements over the next 10 years. The capital budget also included $6 million for construction of a new facility that will allow the campus child care center to significantly expand services to students and community residents. The new child care center is tentatively scheduled for completion in the summer of Other examples of efforts to improve and maintain facilities include: More than $10 million was spent on critical maintenance projects last year that improved facilities and helped achieve efficiencies. Major initiatives included renovation of the third floor of Alumni Hall, new air conditioning for Alumni, Bush and MacDonald Halls and the Clark Field House, a boiler for Thurston Hall, roof and fire alarm replacements, a rehab of the heating plant, and replacement of steam lines. The study/tutor area in the Resnick Library and Learning Center was redesigned to better serve students. Recommendations from the President s Farm Task Force resulted in a new heating/ ventilation system, fencing, and painting at the Valley Campus. The Gaetano Lounge, a popular spot for Technology Division students in Smith Hall, was renovated. The Bush Hall reception area that welcomes prospective students and their families received a major facelift. Alumni donations resulted in new ceiling tiles on the third floor of the library and construction of storage sheds at the track and soccer fields. Enhance Service Excellence SUNY Delhi s commitment to continuous improvement and service excellence is demonstrated in many ways. Each department is required to document the quality service measures it utilizes as part of the annual budget and planning process. Internal and external assessment of academic programs takes place annually to ensure an outstanding educational experience for students. Other examples of Delhi s on-going commitment to service excellence include: To keep pace with rapidly changing technology, Computer Information Services installed 122 new computers and upgraded monitors in the library and in the Statistics, Web Development and Electrical Controls labs. The Delhi Campus Child Care Center earned national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

Delhi horizons The College Association (CADI) contracted with a local computer repair company to provide repair services on campus to students, faculty and staff. CADI and Health Services teamed up to provide an improved health insurance package that increases benefits and reduces the cost to students. The Residents Against Damages program, which continues to reduce vandalism and damage in residence halls, was featured nationally in the Fall issue of RA Manager. A comprehensive Buildings Conditions Assessment Survey was conducted to identify critical maintenance needs on campus. A campus-wide recycling program was launched, along with a pilot program in Gerry Hall that combines recycling with an educational program on sustainability. Foster a Sense of Community Community service is a hallmark of a Delhi education, and the college continues to receive national recognition for its leadership role. SUNY Delhi and the O Connor Center for Community Service were named to President Bush s Honor Role for Community Service for the second consecutive year. The college also celebrates its commitment to service each year at graduation by recognizing students who have achieved exceptional levels of community service during their Delhi careers. In 2008, 16 students achieved this elite status, which marks the largest number honored since the program s inception. Additional examples of SUNY Delhi s community service outreach include: Students received extensive attention for their efforts to raise over $3,000 to aid flood relief victims in the local area. A successful Children s Miracle Network Dance Marathon on campus helped students achieve their goal of raising over $10,000 to support In the spirit of its sustainability efforts, SUNY Delhi celebrated the season with a green holiday tree that featured ornaments made of recycled materials and lights lit exclusively by solar electric power. Pictured here is Student Senate President Brian Wallenhorst adjusting one of the tree s solar panels. the Children s Hospital at University Hospital in Syracuse. Habitat for Humanity received student support for projects in Delaware and Otsego Counties, as well as at the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Hospitality students and faculty used their expertise to support community fund-raising events that benefited the American Cancer Society s Relay for Life, the Delaware County Senior Council, the Delhi Campus Child Care Center, and Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care. Delhi hosted the Spring Plenary Meeting of the University Faculty Senate, an event that attracted nearly 100 governance leaders from across the SUNY system

Honored guests at commencement were Carl T. Hayden, Chairman of the SUNY Board of Trustees (left), Carl Petronio 58, and his, wife Carol (far right pictured with President Candace Vancko. More than 400 community and campus residents viewed Friends. One Day. One Wrong Turn, an exhibit that portrays the consequences of drinking and driving. The exhibit was sponsored by the college s Alcohol and Other Drug Task Force. The Veterinary Science Technology Department held animal care and free rabies clinics for the community. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation awarded $17,300 for the plant sciences program to conduct a tree planning and planting program for the Village of Delhi. Over 70 employers participated in a Career Fair, which was open to students and community residents. A total of 40 faculty and staff participated in the Small Steps program, which was designed to study a new approach to reducing breast cancer risk by increasing health options and physical activity. The program was sponsored by Cornell University and Cooperative Extension. A new focus on anniversary celebrations, combined with the first Athletic Hall of Fame induction, helped attract more than 200 to the campus for Alumni Weekend. Celebrations included the 75th anniversary of the Construction Technology program, 25th anniversary of the wrestling team s record setting performance, and the 10th anniversary of SUNY Delhi s first baccalaureate graduates. Carl Petronio 58, a nationally recognized construction industry leader who is now at the forefront of the alternative energy movement, was presented with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at commencement. The Alumni Association celebrated the achievements of outstanding Delhi graduates, presenting the Distinguished Alumnus Award to Ron Catella 58, whose 50-year career included directing multi-million dollar construction projects at Colonial Williamsburg and Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Alumni of Merit Awards to Stephen Pindar 74, founder of Roberto s Kids, a program to aid disadvantaged youth in Latin America; and Michael O Dea 67, clinical professor of construction management at Purdue University who recently passed away. Each graduation participant received a personalized photo from commencement, a new initiative sponsored by the Alumni Association. The Student Life Division sponsored training to certify 12 staff members as low ropes course facilitators. They then used their skills to lead team building and leadership development activities for resident assistants, orientation leaders and other student groups

Delhi horizons Strategic Approach Pays Dividends at Delhi When President Candace Vancko arrived on campus in the Fall of 1999, the college was at a crossroad when it came to defining its mission and role in the State University system. Outstanding associate degree and certificate programs had been the hallmark of a Delhi education for eight decades. At the same time, the college had seen a tremendous response to the introduction of select baccalaureate degrees, particularly in hospitality and golf course management. There was certainly a concern about preserving Delhi s historical roots, but there was also excitement and anticipation about the opportunities that additional baccalaureates offered, President Vancko recalls. There was very open discussion about the best course to pursue, and we decided to continue to focus on developing unique four-year programs that build on our strengths at the associate degree and certificate levels, she says. The decision created a new niche for Delhi in higher education as a seamless college of technology. Students would have the opportunity to earn a two-year degree and seek immediate employment or continue on to pursue a bachelor s degree and prepare for higher level, middle management positions. The results of this new approach have been impressive. Enrollment in Fall 1999 totaled 2,068 students. Today, enrollment is the highest in the college s history with 2,974 students pursuing SUNY Delhi degrees. As Craig Wesley, Dean of Enrollment Services, says Delhi has become SUNY Delhi s Architectural Design and Building Management option is an example of how the college is developing baccalaureate majors that draw on its expertise at the associate degree level. a hot college. We ve raised the bar very high for our competitors. There have been other benefits as well. Focusing solely on academic areas where Delhi had recognized strengths led to the elimination of nearly 16 programs, most of which were already available at other SUNY campuses. And that freed up precious resources that could be invested in the development of new programs. Nearly 20 programs, built on the foundation of Delhi s expertise at the associate degree level, have been introduced in the last decade. SUNY Delhi has also become more entrepreneurial, which is allowing the college to reach beyond campus boundaries. More than 10 percent of Delhi s enrollment now comes through online and off-campus degree programs. The college s branch campus at Schenectady County Community College has become a model for collaboration within the SUNY system. Designed initially to serve place-bound graduates of Schenectady s hospitality programs, as well as the Capital District s expanding hospitality industry, the college introduced its Hospitality Management Baccalaureate in Hotel and Resort Management at Schenectady to six students in Today, 130 students are pursuing Delhi degrees in four-year programs that have been expanded to include Travel and Tourism Management and Business and Technology Management. The reputation of our two-year programs in Hospitality Management was the reason we were initially able to offer a four-year degree at Schenectady, and the response has been so great that we are looking to offer non-baccalaureate degrees at Schenectady and expand to other community colleges across New York State, says Provost Dennis Callas. The RN to BSN degree is another Delhi success story

Annual Report 2008 and marks the college s biggest leap into online learning. The program, the first of its type in New York State, was introduced in January 2008 and now enrolls more than 113 students from as far away as North Carolina, Georgia and Korea. More and more employers are making a BSN a requirement for nurses, says Mary Pat Lewis, Nursing Department Chair. So we developed a program with a flexible schedule that makes it easy for working nurses to pursue their bachelor s degree. Online delivery has also boosted enrollment in the Veterinary Technology Management baccalaureate program. On the two-year level, Delhi offers an online associate degree in Electrical Construction and Instrumentation in collaboration with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers to graduates of IBEW s five-year apprenticeship. These success stories have helped raise the college s profile on the state and national levels. SUNY Delhi has been honored by U.S. News and World Report as one of the Top 50 Baccalaureate Colleges in the north for the last two years. The Culinary Arts program is known as the best in the northeast. Delhi s Golf/Turf Management Programs were rated the Best in New York State and among the Top 15 in the nation by a leading industry trade publication. SUNY Delhi is now poised to take the next step in its evolution, submitting a proposal to introduce SUNY s first master s degree in Hospitality Management. Delhi s expertise, combined with industry demand for senior managers with master s degrees, provided the impetus for the proposal. Hospitality leaders including Marriott, Gaylord Resorts and the American Hotel and Lodging Association have worked with the college to develop a premier degree. We are well positioned for the future, says President Vancko. Our strategic approach to offering unique academic programs has made Delhi an educational leader, she says. When you combine it with outstanding faculty and staff who are committed to doing everything possible to help students succeed, we have created an educational experience that is truly exceptional. 14 Delhi horizons Student Life at Delhi: Good Things on the Rise New residence halls, improved facilities, a new sports and recreation complex, increased synergy with departments and positive ratings from students are all signs that student life at SUNY Delhi keeps getting better and better. We have a strong student life team with many of us working together for over a decade, says Barbara Jones, Vice President for Student Life. Teamwork, consistency, a focus on students, and clear vision of what we want to accomplish have helped us build an outstanding student life program that has earned recognition at state and national levels. Staying ahead of the trends and really knowing college students have also been the keys to success. You have to stay on top of what s current and know what s popular with students, says Lori Osterhoudt, Director of Counseling and Health Services. It s also about having great people who know their stuff. We have a really great student life team that s very knowledgeable and made up of individuals who support one another. Many new traditions have been introduced over the last 10 years to enhance the Delhi student experience. Orientation was improved to help students transition to college life. Family Day brings students and their parents together in the fall to share a full day of fun on campus. Winterfest engages students in February, one of the coldest months of the year. New graduate recognition events, such as the President s Graduate Dinner, Baccalaureate Toast, and the recognition of community service at commencement, make memories that graduates will carry with them for a lifetime. We build relationships with the students and promote the relationships students build with each other. In fact, on the Student Opinion Survey, students remark how highly they value the friendships they make at Delhi, Vice President Jones says. The Student Opinion Survey, which is administered across the SUNY system, is proof that Delhi is getting it right. The college ranked in the Top 10 in SUNY in 13 categories: Quality of Instruction, Academic Laboratories, Academic Advising, Tutoring Services, Availability of Internships, Develop Mentoring Relationship with Faculty, Acquiring Knowledge and Skills Needed for Career, Athletic and Recreation Facilities, Opportunities for Community Service, Developing Leadership Skills, Student Health Services, New Student Orientation, and Counseling Services. The survey showed that 72 percent of Delhi students are involved in some type of service activity through clubs and organizations, which is tops in the SUNY system. The O Connor Center for Community Service is the impetus behind the high level of student engagement at Delhi. The center was created as a clearinghouse for student volunteers who wish to connect with the community, and it has taken the longstanding Delhi tradition of serving the community and has made it a Community service is a large part of student life at Delhi. Recently, President Candace Vancko (far left) joined students in their community clean-up efforts. permanent part of student life on campus. Funded by the Hobartbased A. Lindsay and Olive B. O Connor Foundation, the center has twice earned national recognition on President Bush s Honor Roll for Community Service. The rich variety of experiences available to students at Delhi plays an important role in their development, according to Lori Osterhoudt. I ve seen so many students become great leaders because they had the opportunity to serve as a resident assistant, as

Annual Report 2008 an orientation leader, or serve on the Student Programming Board, she says. Many students who come to Delhi may lack self-confidence or leadership experience. They are able to mature because of all the opportunities Delhi is able to offer them and the support they receive here. I d say we have a real knack for developing the hidden potential in students. The opportunities to get involved at Delhi are numerous. More than 50 student clubs and organizations encourage student participation on campus. Marty Greenfield, Director of Student Life, says Delhi was one of the first colleges in the SUNY system to develop a co-curricular transcript to recognize students for their extracurricular work. We believe students should be recognized for their involvement. The co-curricular transcript illustrates that a student has skills in organizing, planning, running meetings, delegating, and problem solving, which are skills that are important to future employers. It s a way that students can aggregate their campus involvement and translate that experience into a resume, an application for an award, etc. The co-curricular transcript is only one example of how Delhi sees student development as part of the bigger picture. Student life staff understand the need to support and enhance student learning in and outside of the classroom, so they are continually looking for ways to collaborate with faculty. According to Vice President Jones, research says the more student life and academics work together, the greater potential for student success. That philosophy has been the impetus for initiatives like Freshman Seminar and the college s Living Learning Communities. Delhi s Freshman Seminar, which is designed to give incoming Winterfest continues to be a popular activity on campus thanks to contributions from the family of Marcus Somerstein, a Hotel and Resort Management student who died tragically in a 2001 auto accident. students the tools they need to be successful both academically and socially, has greatly improved student success. According to John Sandman, who has tracked statistics on the program for nearly 10 years, students who take Freshman Seminar have higher grade point averages in their first semester than students who do not. In the first year the seminar was required for Liberal Arts and Sciences students, the academic dismissal rate for students in that program was cut in half. The success of Freshman Seminar earned Delhi a first place award as a 2008 SUNY Outstanding Student Affairs Program Award for Academic and Student Affairs Collaboration. The program also incorporates the Freshman Four, a series of activities where experts present on social topics, such as healthy relationships and internet safety. The Freshman Four was developed by Greenfield and has earned its own accolades with an Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities Innovative Programming Award in Much of creating student programming is realizing what works and being flexible enough to adjust, says Greenfield. Our pragmatism, flexibility and looking to do things in new ways is what makes us successful in reaching the students. Today, Delhi s Student Life Division has grown to encompass Residence Life, Counseling and Health Services, Student Activities, University Police, and now Athletics. There s a synergy in the Delhi Student Life Division that s unparalleled at other campuses. Vice President Jones philosophy has always been to encourage staff to be creative so they can explore the possibilities. And that philosophy is applied to the students as well. We provide many ways for students to express themselves, but at the same time we provide a lot of structure, she says. Helping students grow it s a tough job. It s a lot of what we do. It s what also makes our job so rewarding

Delhi horizons Upgrades Transform the Delhi Campus New and improved facilities on campus are a prime example of SUNY Delhi s commitment to enriching the college experience for students. We ve made strategic investments to improve academic facilities and support new program development, says President Candace Vancko. We ve also significantly expanded student life and recreation facilities to meet the needs and expectations of today s college students. This past year is a prime example. A new baking lab was created to add a new dimension to the Culinary Arts program, which has achieved unprecedented success at the state, regional and national levels. The lab was funded in part by grants secured by State Senator John Bonacic. The College Foundation stepped to the forefront, building a 70-student apartment complex to provide a new housing option for outstanding students. A gift from Gaylord Resorts created a guest suite to support the Hospitality Management programs. Those projects are indicative of the entrepreneurial approach SUNY Delhi has used to fund new and improved facilities on campus. Grants, private gifts and funds from the SUNY Capital Budget have been combined to maximize the return on investment. The results have been impressive and have reached every corner of the campus. Here s a look at some of the highlights over the past decade: Agora The campus steam distribution system from Sanford Hall to O Connor Hall was upgraded into a more modern and energy efficient system. This project prompted the renovation of the college s Agora, an area between Evenden Tower, Bush Hall and Farrell Hall. The excavation allowed the college to redesign the area as a more open and friendly space. Resnick Library and Learning Center A $1 million renovation transformed Resnick Library into a comprehensive learning center. The project was funded by $150,000 in private donations, which leveraged $850,000 in support from SUNY. The final result brought together a traditional library and academic support services under one roof. Also, special collection rooms were created for the Veterinary Science Technology and Nursing programs, and the Resnick Reading Room was created as a quiet, comfortable space for studying. Clark Field House Delhi s intercollegiate athletics programs found a new home at the Clark Field House in the spring of Special facilities at the field house include the Floyd L. Maines Arena, CADI Fitness Center, Quandt s Training Room, and the Bearsch Compeau Knudson Conference Room. Farrell Hall will become a stateof-the-art student and community center, thanks to a $21.5 million transformation. Pictured is the façade that will face the Agora

Annual Report 2008 The college s bubble was incorporated into the new facility. Catskill Hall A 150-bed suite style residence hall opened in Fall 2004 and expanded the college s residence capacity for the first time since Located west of Russell Hall in the southeast corner of the upper campus, the $7 million addition was longanticipated with enrollment rising at that time for the fourth consecutive year. ETC A $4.3 million two-story building, dedicated in 2001, gave Delhi s Electrical Construction and Electrical Instrumentation and Controls programs full access to specialized lab equipment in a high-tech setting. South Hall More than $140,000 was invested to convert South Hall into a laboratory facility to support the college s rapidly expanding nursing programs. Architecture Lab In 2006, a new architecture studio was constructed in Farnsworth Hall as a dedicated facility for Delhi s B.T. in Architectural Design and Building. Surgical Suite The Farnsworth Hall surgical suite was renovated in response to recommendations from the American Veterinary Medical Association. Valley Campus The Decker Automotive Laboratory received a facelift and an air-conditioning system was installed. Instructor Julee Miller, far right, talks with students Sarah Devine, Kasey Carpentier and Erica Wells of the Artisanal Breads class in the college s new baking lab located in MacDonald Hall. Technology More than $75,000 was dedicated to create new, high-tech smart classrooms in Evenden Tower, Farnsworth Hall and Sandford Hall. Wireless internet connectivity for students in the residence halls was introduced in 2002, and since then, wireless connectivity can be found in nearly every corner of campus. Residence Halls The expansion of DuBois Hall made room to accommodate an evergrowing student contingency of the popular Veterinary Science Technology Experience Program. The college also developed under utilized lounge spaces in Murphy and O Connor Halls and improved bathrooms in Murphy and O Connor. Safety The college implemented new front entrance doors to all the residence halls with card access and lobby telephones. In addition, new emergency phones and parking lot light improvements were made based on recommendations from the college s Personal Safety Committee. Fire alarm systems were upgraded in the Wall Service Complex as well as in Smith, Alumni, MacDonald and North Halls, and new sidewalks, which are ADA compliant, greatly improved access and safety for students. Critical maintenance projects, while not as visible, are essential and have received a boost, thanks to special funding available through the State University Construction Fund s five-year capital plan. SUNY Delhi has received $16.9 million through the capital plan over the last five years, funding projects such as the replacement of the campus steam distribution system to improve energy efficiency and new roofs on major buildings. The majority of our campus was built in the 1960 s, so these critical maintenance dollars are essential for day-to-day repairs and improvements, says David Loveland, Physical Plant Director. Next up is a massive renovation that will convert Farrell Hall into a modern student and community center. The project, scheduled to begin in 2009, is jointly funded through the SUNY Construction Fund and grants from Senator Bonacic. It s our biggest undertaking to date, says President Vancko. It will be a showcase facility that will transform programs and services for students

Delhi horizons Support of Friends Drives Library Gift Community and business leaders Richard and Marilyn Wickham of Delhi have made a major gift of $50,000 to fund new technology at SUNY Delhi s Resnick Library and Learning Center. They say they were inspired by the library s namesakes, Louis and Mildred Resnick, to offer their support. We were close friends with the Resnicks for many years; in fact I served on the College Council with Louis, says Richard Wickham. That s why we chose to support Resnick Library when the opportunity was presented to me and my wife, Marilyn. Mr. Wickham noted that the timing of their gift was important as well 2008 marks the fifth anniversary of the rededication of the Resnick Library and Learning Center. The rededication followed a $1 million renovation of the facility that was funded in part by private gifts, including the Wickhams first donation to the library. We are extremely grateful to the Wickhams for their generosity, says President Candace Vancko. As community leaders, they understand that SUNY Delhi plays an important role in the community and have decided to make a personal investment in the college s future. They understand that their support of new technology for the Resnick Library will help SUNY Delhi provide students with the best learning opportunities that are available. Resnick Library Director Pamela Peters is currently prioritizing a list of equipment, computers, and furnishings that will be purchased to help improve student services at the Resnick Library. The Wickhams have a legacy of supporting SUNY Delhi. They first established the Richard and Marilyn Wickham Scholarship in This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student studying Automotive Technology at Delhi. Mr. Wickham served on the College Council for 18 years and has been serving on the College Foundation since He also serves on the college s Advisory Council to the Automotive Technology program. As charter members of the College Golf Course at Delhi, the Wickhams contribute each year to the college s Educational Golf Tournament. Richard and Marilyn have been married for 56 years, and for 40 of those years, worked together operating Wickham Sales and Service in Delhi. The family also Marilyn Wickham, Library Director Pam Peters, Richard Wickham, and President Candace Vancko celebrate the Wickham s generosity. started Wickham Fuel Oil in 1955, providing home heating services, gasoline, kerosene, and diesel to the community for 51 years. Mr. Wickham served in the United States Army in Korea and then worked for Bendix Aviation in Sidney, before joining the family car business in The Wickhams hope to encourage other contributions to the college with their recent donation. The library is a great place for students to meet with faculty and get help with their studies. It is such a wonderful resource and support center to students that it needs to stay on the cutting edge of technology. This gift will help do that, Mrs. Wickham says

A Special Thank You to Delhi Alumni: In last year s annual report, I made a special request to increase your annual support of SUNY Delhi. You listened and responded generously, and I would like to personally thank you for investing in your alma mater. Delhi alumni gave gifts totaling $130,304 last year. That represents an increase of $15,559 over the previous year. Alumni participation also increased by 13 percent with 1,762 alumni making gifts to SUNY Delhi. Your support resulted in: Increased scholarship aid for students; Continued support of the highly successful tutoring program; Improvements to athletic fields and facilities; and Support of special projects, including campus beautification. Your response represents a great start toward our goal of doubling alumni participation. That would elevate us to the average participation rate for Colleges of Technology across the SUNY system. This year, your support is needed more than ever. New York s fiscal crisis has resulted in unprecedented budget cuts totaling nearly $2 million. New York State now provides only 27 percent of the college s operating budget. When I began my career at SUNY Delhi in 1981, state support was nearly 80 percent. As a former SUNY president said, we have moved from being state supported to state assisted to state regulated. Reductions in state support come at a time of unprecedented growth for the college. Enrollment is the highest in Delhi history, which means more students who have financial need. We are increasingly challenged to keep pace with technology in classrooms and labs this year the state eliminated most of the funding for academic equipment. Total critical maintenance needs for the campus are estimated at $46 million. Those are just some of the ways you can help. Your support of the Alumni Annual Fund will help us meet our most immediate needs, and I hope you will respond generously when our student callers contact you this spring. There are also opportunities to make an investment in the college s future through planned giving. Susan Perkins, who has more than 13 years of experience in college advancement, joined our staff in June as Senior Development Officer. She and I are ready to meet with alumni and friends who would like to learn more about how they can make a difference at SUNY Delhi. Sincerely, $91, , $93, , $88, $114, , $130, ,762 Alumni Participating in Annual Fund Joel M. Smith Executive Director, College Foundation at Delhi, Inc
