5 Our Pride Looking back Second Morrill Act passed by U.S. Congress August 30, 1890» Land grants to include Negro students» N.C. General Assembly enacted legislation on March 9, 1891 to create the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race. A Board of Trustees was appointed to oversee the affairs of the college» Moved to Greensboro, N.C. John Oliver Crosby, first president Started with one building (the college building)» Classrooms, food service, dormitories for men and women Graduated first class of seven students Motto: No Steps Backwards 5

7 Our Pride Early 1900s Developed the first farm on campus that spanned 8-10 acres from what is now Harrison Auditorium to Noble Hall Relocated the farm to East Market Street to what is now the Lorillard Tobacco Company campus, expanding it to 100 acres New name Negro Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina (1915) National Alumni Association organized (1926) 7

10 Our Pride Mid-1900s A&T Four changed the course of a nation Relocated the farm to McConnell Road, then 567 acres Designated a regional university, renamed North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (1967) Academic divisions and schools created Constituent university of the University of North Carolina (1972) 10
