2 P A G E 2 P A G E 2 FAIR CORNER 2018 MANITOWOC COUNTY FAIR Mark your calendars for the 2018 Manitowoc County Fair set for August Theme and Colors The 2018 fair theme is Your All American Fair. Children 3 and under are Free (does not include rides) Hello all! I am Emily Hutterer, Manitowoc County s Fairest of the Fair for I graduated from Mishicot High School and continued my education at UW- Manitowoc for two years. Now, in my junior year, I am at UW- Madison where I am majoring in Dairy Science with plans to go to Veterinary School in the future. I have been having such a great time as Fairest of the Fair so far. I ve been in parades, spoken about the fair at the Lions Club and the Noon Rotary meetings, and I was a judge at the ice cream eating contest at Two Rivers Sundae Thursday. Seeing all those kids try to slam ice cream and end up with a brain freeze was one of my highlights so far. The Fair is right around the corner, August 21-26, and I hope you are as excited as I am about it. There are so many fun activities to do at the fair! In the grandstand, which is included with the $10 daily admission, there will be fireworks, modified truck and tractor pulls, tractor pulls, a demo derby, and new this year there will be a battle of the fire departments competition. A great aspect of the Manitowoc County Fair is that with any admission fee including the veteran/senior citizen pass for $6 or a season pass for $30, anyone can enjoy the music in the various pavilions. This year, polka bands will be back in the Family Pavilion starting Wednesday. Also, in the, there will be exercise classes with HFM Wellness, so after you enjoy some delicious fair treats you can work off the extra calories. I know I ll be stopping in for a class or two before the fair is over! If you are looking for a good laugh come watch a few good sports eating cream puffs, including me, without our hands. It s sure to be full of laughs and a lot of whipped cream. That will take place on Thursday at 2pm in the. Prior to the cream puff eating contest is a mini donut eating contest for little ones as well. New this year in the grandstand, the Battle of the Fire Departments Competition, where different area fire department representatives will work together to (Continued on page 4) Other Passes Available Season Pass: $30 Senior Pass: $6 (60+) Veteran s Pass: $6 (Proper ID) All passes include parking, Grandstand and music. Also, really exciting this year, Mad Dog & Merrill will be making an appearance to do a few cooking shows, so stop by and learn how to cook some delicious food. As always at the Manitowoc County Fair, there are animal shows almost every day, from beef cattle on Wednesday to Llamas and Alpacas on Friday with many others in between. On Thursday, I ll be taking a little break from Fairest of the Fair to exhibit my dairy cattle in the Ice Center so stop out and visit with me and my cows. A really special event taking place on Saturday night is the Manitowoc Culver s Futurity at 7pm to see gorgeous dairy cows with exhibitors dressed in formal wear. Come early as this event always fills all the seats in the Ice Center. As the fair approaches I encourage everyone to try something new at the fair. As a dairy cattle exhibitor, I ve been accustom to spend the majority of my time at the fair in the barn with my cows, but this year, as the Manitowoc County Fairest of the Fair, I ll be at a wide variety of activities and events at the fair. So, I invite all of you to join me in trying something new at Your All American Fair and see where I ll be at the fair. You can follow the Manitowoc County Fairest of the Fair on Facebook. I hope to see you all at this year s All American Fair August Emily Hutterer 2018 Manitowoc County Fairest of the Fair

5 P A G E 5 Lakeshore Community Job Fair MANITOWOC, WI, September 18, 2018 Progress Lakeshore, The Chamber of Manitowoc County, Lakeshore Technical College, Lakeland University, Wisconsin DWD, Manitowoc County Job Center, Sheboygan County Job Center, Sheboygan County Economic Development Corp, and the Sheboygan Chamber will be hosting their 2018 Fall Lakeshore Community Job Fair at Manitowoc County Expo Event and Hosting Fairgrounds in Manitowoc on Tuesday, September 18 from 1pm 4pm. There will be over 70 employers in attendance with a variety of positions looking to be filled. The Lakeshore Community Job Fair invites businesses, organizations and job seekers from Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties and beyond to connect with one another to explore job opportunities. The Manitowoc County Expo Event & Hosting Fairgrounds, merchant building is located at 4921 Expo Drive, Manitowoc, WI A list of employers and open positions, along with more information, can be found by visiting the Lakeshore Community Job Fair website at lakeshorecommunityjobfair.org/. About Lakeshore Community Job Fair: The Lakeshore Community Job Fair is a partnership among several organizations in Sheboygan and Manitowoc counties to help employers connect with job seekers by organizing two community job fairs, one in the fall and one in the spring. The Job Fairs are designed to be relevant to current job search practices, offering new and innovative ways to engage employers and job seekers when appropriate. We look forward to working with our community. Learn more about the Lakeshore Community Job Fair team at NEW K9 Scent Work Trial at the Ice Center N.E.W K9 Scent Work will be hosting two days of NACSW (Nat'l Association of Canine Scent Work) Nose Work trials at the Manitowoc Ice Center on September Over the two day period, 63 dogs from all over the U.S. (chosen from over 200 teams that entered) will be competing at high levels, K9 Nose Work is a competitive sport which provides the companion and sporting dog an outlet for their natural hunting and scenting abilities. It was inspired by the model of working detection dogs. Like professional detection dogs, our dogs train and test in real world situations. But instead of using drugs and bombs, the dogs are searching for the target odors of birch, anise, & clove on half q-tips. These dogs search containers, vehicles, interiors, and exteriors in timed searches in new environments, in this case, the Manitowoc Ice Center and its grounds. The judges for these events are K9 police or military handlers who marvel at the proficiency of these companion dogs. Although this event is not open to the public, there will be some amazing searches going on throughout the weekend.

8 P A G E 8 Special Olympics 5K Run/Walk A family recently relocated to Manitowoc and questioned the lack of activities for their adult daughter who has an intellectual disability. That all changed when they made contact with the Manitowoc County Miracles Special Olympics agency. Rather than sitting at home, her calendar quickly began to fill up with the countless social, physical, and mental opportunities that Special Olympics offers. Manitowoc County Miracles currently serves almost 200 individuals with intellectual disabilities of Manitowoc County. It is the largest Special Olympic agency in the state that is run solely by volunteers and depends exclusively on fundraising to manage fourteen different sports that take place throughout the year. Proceeds from the Running A- Fair, a 5K run/walk, help make these opportunities become a reality. Since its inception in 2000, the Running A-Fair, has raised over $100,000, all of which stays in Manitowoc County. Over 200 participants, including runners, walkers, Special Olympic athletes, and volunteers take part in the run/walk each year. After awards are presented by the Fairest of the Fair, smiles abound as participants enjoy the many activities of the opening day of the fair. Of course, the 5K run/walk wouldn t be possible without the assistance of the staff of the Manitowoc County Fair. They assist with tickets, registration set up, volunteer along the route, and are always there when needed. This year s event takes place on Tuesday, August 21st, at 6pm with registration starting at 4pm. All participants get free admission to the fair, receive a Running A-Fair shirt and, of course, donate to a wonderful cause. Brochures with registrations are available at the fair office and throughout the community. Online registration is also available at For more information, contact Kris at Family Pavilion The sponsored by Prevea will be host to family entertainment throughout the week! There will be a line up of entertainment for everyone to enjoy starting on Tuesday, August 21.
