3 From the Desk of Fr. Mike Dear Friends, Lent: Lent starts this Wednesday. Jesus talks about doing three things during Lent: Prayer, Fasting, & Almsgiving. I think it is NECESSARY to do something in ALL of those departments, not just one. And something hard. I worry we US Catholics have gotten a little too lax and lazy in our spiritual lives. What about fasting from hot showers? From television? From anything more than 30 minutes on the smartphone a day? It is always dangerous when we say it is "impossible" to give this or that up. That's bologna. We'd easily give that "impossible" thing up for our son or daughter if we had to. Why not for God?? PRAY! FAST! GIVE! It will be a great Lent. Open doors at St. Joe: It is a peaceful thing to pray in our church. During Lent, the side door will be open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. every day. Come in and spend some quiet time with the Lord. Mass this Friday: I am excited to go visit my brother, sister-in-law, nephews and nieces on my day off this week. They live in Ohio. Given their work and school schedules, I want to spend Thursday afternoon and evening with them and return here Friday morning. So, I won't be back in time for 8:15 a.m. Mass. Now I celebrate Mass every single day. I will offer Mass after the 5:30 p.m. Stations of the Cross for those who wish to stay. The Parish Festival: After much prayer and discussion, we are going to proceed with the festival. We will need many hands to volunteer. Some people have been looking at me like I have three heads! But many are excited. Here's why I feel God wants us to have a festival: 1) Several people have asked for it. 2) Everybody likes a festival! Especially the kids. 3) It is our 150th anniversary this year. 4) Evangelization - it s amazing what can happen when we get people here on our turf. 5) Fundraising - we can use the proceeds to help fund the St. Vincent de Paul Society and assist with the salary of a new youth minister/ catechetical leader. 6) We are a family and it is a good thing to come together for things like this - just to celebrate and have a good time together 7) It is good for us to host community events and not just exist for us. 8) I had a festival growing up at my church and we all loved it. 9) It would be fun! 10) It offers us a host of opportunities to give back to our church in terms of volunteer time. Well, if the Lord wants it, it will happen. I think he wants it. PLEASE contact me via or cell phone if you would like to help. We need lots of help! God bless you and have a blessed week. My prayers and love! Fr. Mike The St. Joe Show: I've written a play that Carolyn Disser and I are directing with our school kids. It's called the St. Joe Show and it tells the 150-year story of St. Joe's. Please come. It will take place on the feast of St. Joseph, March 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Strand. St. Joe Feast: Saturday, March 10. Come and celebrate!! 2 p.m. - carnival in gym or outside, 4 p.m. procession, 5 p.m. Mass, 6 p.m. Dinner in cafeteria, 7:30 p.m. band and dinner at K of C.come for the whole day and celebrate our parish and our patron! Middle school & High school Lenten Lock-in: Get rid of your kids for a night. We've got some great chaperones lined up for a good night. 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb 17 through 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb 18. Only 12 hours but it will be great. Jan Lux: Praise God Jan has returned to us! She had knee surgery. We missed her very much and are happy she is back.

It is amazing what God can do when we are generous. Please be sure to remember St. Joseph Parish in your will! St. Joseph News St. Joseph 150th History Water and Natural Gas Added to Church, Rectory 1890 was a year of considerable importance to St. Joseph Church. Handwritten archives show additions were built to the church at a cost of $827, and to the school at a cost of $375. A brick wall on the south side of the church was broken out to allow the attachment of a frame structure. A pipe organ from St. Patrick s Church in Indianapolis was purchased for $350, water piped into the church and house, also the plumbing for natural gas with the purchase of 10 shares of natural gas stock ($250). In 1892, pavement was laid in front of the church and school with curbing in front of the church. A partial fence was put up around the church. Throughout the 1800 s, finances of St. Joseph s Church were always in satisfactory condition. Families and individuals rented their seats. Up to 1886, the renting of a single seat was $4 a year. Rent increased to $5 from 1886 to July 1892 when the increase went to $6. Every fall from 1877 or 1878, the ladies gave a festival. Among the profits recorded were $60 in 1895; $ in 1896, with no festival held in 1894 and Due to failing health, Rev. Adelrich Kaelin, the first resident pastor of St. Joseph s parish in 1886, retired from active work to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis in 1917 where he remained until his death. Rev. George Borries was appointed to succeed Father Kaelin. In the four and a half years of his administration, a parish debt of $10,700 was paid off and $4,500 was spent to purchase additional ground. On May 5, 1920, he purchased lots on East Hendricks Street for $2,500 and on May 27, he purchased another property for $2,000. Flying Toasters Tickets Tickets for the Flying Toasters will be on sale after all the Masses. The cost is $30/ticket. Please join us at the Knights of Columbus, doors will open at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10th. Must be 21 to enter the concert. Father Borries contracted a severe cold at the end of February 1922, which developed into pneumonia and brought him to an untimely death on March 9, He was but 44 years of age and his death was a shock to the parish and to the community. The Rev. John C. Rager took over duties as pastor on March 25, 1922, and an assistant pastor, Fr. Henry Ebnet, came on board in July of 1923.

6 Catholic Schools Week Thank you to everyone who made Catholic Schools Week such a success! Please see some pictures below from the wonderful week that the children and staff had. AT THE STRAND

7 Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, This past Sunday Deacon Tom shared in his homily that God is telling us that the church is made up of the good, the bad and the ugly. We are the church. In this Sundays Gospel we have a story of one of the uglies. A person with leprosy in Jesus time was totally ostracized from the community. This person had so much faith in Jesus, that he broke all laws by coming into town and challenged Jesus, if you want to, you can make me clean. And Jesus responded, I do want to. Direct, honest, so revealing of God. The whole life of Jesus consists in healing those of deep or little faith. In a very unusual move, Jesus touched the man with care and said, Be made clean. Our spiritual life consists of being made clean. No matter how disgusting our failings may be. We must receive Jesus touch on our souls. This week as we take time to pray, ask Jesus to touch your soul and clear away all the uglies. Sr. Joan Miller We joyfully share our gifts to nourish the community St. Vincent Purpose Statement St. Vincent News February Food Drive The February Food Drive will be Sunday, February 18th. Please bring at least ONE item to share with our brothers and sisters who are in need. Especially during Lent, we want to share our prayers, fasting and almsgiving with those in need. February 4th, 2018 Sunday Collection: $ 3, Children Collection: $ Ash Wednesday Wednesday, February 14th is Ash Wednesday: The Religious Ed students will bury the ALLELUIA at the beginning of mass during the 6:00 p.m. Mass. Praying the Rosary Please join us to pray the Rosary at St. Vincent Church on Wednesday, February 14th at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Little Black Books The Little Black Books are out by the doors of church. Look for them! Give God the Glory A curious feature of the first half of Mark s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great secret revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus humbled himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God s reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today.
