1 MUSIC EVENTS AT BOWDOIN COLLEGE Fall 2010 George Lopez, piano Friday, September 10 at 7:30 PM Mr. Lopez will inaugurate his two-year appointment as Artist-in-Residence at Bowdoin with a recital which will include Schumann s Five Posthumous Variations, Opus 13, Beethoven s Sonata in A Flat, Opus 10, and Bach s Goldberg Variations. Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra Thursday, September 16 at 7:30 PM Pickard Theater, Memorial Hall Grammy-nominated Irvin Mayfield, a versatile trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger, and recording artist, is a passionate spokesman for the rich history and cultural significance of jazz and New Orleans. He was appointed cultural ambassador for both the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans. He formed the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra in The Road to Carnegie Hall concert tour culminates on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and is a landmark journey that affirms that jazz, the city of New Orleans, and its people are ascendant and ready to reclaim their position as a center of cultural influence. Quintetssentials Sunday, September 19 at 3:00 PM Quintetssentials is a string quintet comprised of the Lydian String Quartet (violinists Daniel Stepner and Judith Eissengberg; violist Mary Ruth Ray; and cellist Joshua Gordon) and their longtime colleague cellist Rhonda Rider. This splendid fivesome (playfully self-described as Rhonda and the Lyds) is dedicated to performing and treating listeners to the magisterial Schubert Quintet in C Major and, as icing on the cake, some of the other magical but less-often performed works for what one calls a "cello quintet": the four strings of a standard string quartet with an additional cello. Among these also-engaging composers are Boccherini, Borodin, George Onslow (known to his peers as the French Beethoven), and Frank Martin. A pre-concert lecture will be held at 2:00 PM in the auditorium. Aniruddha Knight and Ensemble Bharata Natyam Dance and Music of South India Demonstration: Friday, September 24 at 7:30 PM Tillotson Room, Gibson Hall Performance: Saturday, September 25 at 3:00 PM Knight is a ninth generation performer from one of India s most distinguished families of professional musicians and dancers, and is the only grandson of the world-famous T. Balasaraswati. In the tradition of his family, he is both a musician and a dancer, and he shares with his accompanists an understanding of the integration of music with dance that is unique to the style he inherited from his mother, Lakshmi Knight, Balasaraswati s daughter and principal student.

As a viola teacher at Curtis and as principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1996 to 2006, Díaz has already had a significant impact on American musical life and continues to do so in his dual roles as performer and educator.
