1 November 16, For Immediate Release Media Relations Jacque Cottrell, Director Cliff Martin, Assistant Great West Conference P.O. Box 9344 Naperville, Ill Phone: (630) Fax: (630) Cal Poly (Football) UC Davis (Football) Chicago State Houston Baptist New Jersey Institute of Technology North Dakota South Dakota (Football) Southern Utah (Football) Texas-Pan American Utah Valley The Other Half of 2011 Crown Will be Handed Out Saturday in Grand Forks It s interesting that the two newest members of the Great West will be playing in the final league game with the opportunity to share the final conference title with a team that has had the most success in the eight years the league has been in existence. Cal Poly ended its Great West run with a 3-1 record to earn one piece of the title and will have to wait until about 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon to find out who shares it as the North Dakota vs. South Dakota battle will be over. The Coyotes and the Fighting Sioux will meet on the gridiron for the 94th time on Saturday with a lot at stake - bragging rights, pride and the final Great West championship. I can t think of a better way to end our tenure in the Great West than having the Coyotes and Sioux playing for a share of the title, said USD coach Ed Meierkort. If you would have told me before the season started that we would be traveling to Grand Forks in the last game with the opportunity to win the Great West title, we would have taken it right there. It s a great opportunity in front of us. Grand Forks has been a place that South Dakota has not had a great deal of success in recent years - in fact, it s had none since The Sioux have won the last 11 games played at home and look to add another. In the long history of the rivalry, the two teams have met twice on the last weekend of the regular season with a league title at stake. North Dakota kept USD from winning the 2004 North Central title with a win in Grand Forks, and USD beat UND at home the following year to grab a share of the conference title Great West Football Standings GWC Games All Games W L PF PA Pct. USD was 4-7 last year and we were 3-8. It says a lot about both programs that we have improved and are in a position to be playing for a share of a Great West title. Saturday s games will bring to a close the football portion of the Great West as Cal Poly, UC Davis, SUU and UND head to the Big Sky next season and USD moves to the Missouri Valley, all NCAA AQ leagues. Conference Headquarters P.O. Box 9344 Naperville, IL Phone: (630) Fax: (630) The Great West became one of the top FCS conferences in the country because of the outstanding coaches and student-athletes as well as the administrators who had the vision of moving their programs to another level, said commissioner Ed Grom, who will be on hand in Grand Forks. I wish there was a way we could have kept the group together, but economic times and the everchanging priorities in college athletics did not allow this to sustain what we started - and it was a fun experience. 3 The Ins and Outs of Great West Rosters A glance at the rosters of Great West football programs shows players from 24 different states, one other country (Canada) and an island with American ties (Somoa). A look at the UC Davis roster shows every player except one hailing from the state of California - you have to wonder how QB Sean Moraz - who comes from Phoenix, Ariz. - occupies his time when the California state song is played. The 494 players on rosters weigh a total of 11,600 pounds for an average of pounds per player. The total height is 36,329 inches, an average of 6-foot, 1.54 inches tall, which if you lay them down head to toe, can stretch out to 1009 football fields in length.
