Our 60 th Class reunion is set for Monday, May 13 - Wednesday, May 15, Every year those who return find this to be a very special time, and this year promises to be even better. With a blend of traditional favorites and new events, this year s reunion offers more reasons than ever to join your old friends and classmates. This year s schedule is a bit different than reunions in the past. Tours and seminars fill Monday during the day, with an afternoon reception at Carr s Hill with President Teresa A. Sullivan and our 60 th Reunion Class Dinner will be held that evening, at which John T. Casteen will address the class. On Tuesday morning, President Sullivan will address the entire Society. We ll highlight several new speakers, including Richard Guerrant, founder and director of the Center for Global Health at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and John Lach, professor of computer engineering. Of course, we ll repeat some of the old favorites, including Larry J. Sabato s Crystal Ball, David Neuman discussing the Rotunda Restoration, and lunch with our undergraduate schools. We will enjoy food and drink at our class dinner on Monday and a Society Dinner in Memorial Gym on Tuesday evening. We ll even have the opportunity to enjoy some post-dinner dancing with the Four Freshman jazz group after Tuesday s dinner. There are several packages to choose from to modify your attendance at the reunion and to register for the events of your choosing. You may choose to register for the events of all three days or a single day, depending on your availability and interest. There are so many reasons to come back. Reconnect with old friends and enjoy getting to know Cavaliers you haven t met. Sharpen your intellect at seminars from groundbreaking thinkers and faculty at the University. Come see the beautifully landscaped Grounds, as well as the entire Central Virginia region, in the bloom of spring. Our 60 th Class Reunion is one you do not want to miss. Heavy rain cancels. 9:15 a.m. 2:15 p.m. Jefferson s Monticello and Michie Tavern Excursion Departs from Alumni Hall Begin the reunion with a full-day exploration of two of Central Virginia s treasured sites. First, we ll head to Monticello, home of our nation s third president and the father of our great University. Enjoy some time in the visitor s center, stroll through the exhibits and watch the introductory film, Thomas Jefferson s World. We ll then be shuttled up the mountain to tour the house and learn about Jefferson s life on the plantation. For those interested and able, the tour will include special access to the second-floor Dome Room. Afterward, we will proceed down the road to Michie Tavern, where we will tour the oldest sections of the tavern where many of our Founding Fathers dined and socialized and enjoy a lunch of traditional Southern fare. Note: Participation is limited to the first 60 registrants. This event requires an additional fee of $60 per person. This fee covers travel, lunch at Michie Tavern and both tour expenses. Due to extensive walking and stairs at both Monticello and Michie Tavern, this event is not recommended for those with limited mobility. 9:30 10:15 a.m. Tour of the University Library s Special Collections Exhibits Harrison Institute/ Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library Join the staff of the library as they walk you through the fascinating exhibits on display. View an original Dunlap copy of the Declaration of Independence, walk through an archaeological exhibit featuring artifacts from the historic Virginia estate Flowerdew Hundred, and learn about the value the Special Collections Library has added to the University community and student experience. The library is home to more than 16 million manuscripts and 350,000 rare books. Note: Participation is limited to the first 35 registrants. Athletics: Successes and Stories John Paul Jones Arena Barry Parkhill (Educ 73), associate athletics director and former U.Va. athlete, will share stories and successes of U.Va. athletics over the past few decades. Parkhill was named the ACC Men s Basketball Player of the Year and the ACC Athlete of the Year for the season, when he averaged 21.6 points per game and led the Cavaliers to their second postseason appearance in school history. His number, 40, was retired at the end of his senior season. In 2002, Parkhill was named to the ACC 50 th - Anniversary Men s Basketball Team as one of the 50 greatest players in Atlantic Coast Conference history. 3 4:15 p.m. James Madison: The Untold Story Fourth president of the United States, Father of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, author of more than a third of the Federalist Papers and the second rector of the University of Virginia after Thomas Jefferson, James Madison was among the most significant thinkers and writers of our Founding Fathers. Barefoot s books include The Corner: A History of Student Life at the University of Virginia and Thomas Jefferson on Leadership. Sullivan, the eighth president of the University. A mimosa toast in Old Cabell Hall Lobby will commemorate the graduation procession of 50 years ago. Note: In the event of rain, the Lawn Procession will be cancelled and Mimosa Toast will begin in Old Cabell Hall Lobby at 9:30 a.m. 10:15 11:30 a.m. Presidential Update and Class of 1963 Induction Ceremony Old Cabell Hall, Auditorium All members of the Class of 1963 and the Thomas Jefferson Society are invited to attend. President Teresa A. Sullivan will host the ceremonial induction of the Class of 1963 into the Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni. President Sullivan will address the society and give an update on the progress of the University. Noon 1:45 p.m. Class of 1963 Reunion Celebration Luncheon Boar s Head Inn, Pavilion The Class of 1963 is invited to a special luncheon hosted by the Office of Reunion Giving. The guest speaker is Kenneth Ken G. Elzinga, Robert C. Taylor, Professor of Economics, with an address to the class, Our University: Things That Change and Things That Stay the Same. Robert D. Sweeney, U.Va. s senior vice president for development and public affairs, will receive the class gift from by the co-chairs of the Class of 1963 Giving Committee, Jim Bailey, Ed Mitchell, Bill Scanlan and Bill Spencer. Noon 1:45 p.m. TJ Society Lunch Break Please take this time to explore the Grounds, visit local restaurants on the Corner with friends, return to your hotel or enjoy a bagged lunch at Alumni Hall. Note: Bagged lunches must be purchased in advance. Turkey or vegetarian sandwich lunches will be sold for $7 each and will be available in the Alumni Hall Ballroom. 2 3:15 p.m. The Role of Ethics in Modern Medicine Come hear about how our ethics affect us in this modern age, particularly in the field of medicine. Professor Jim Childress is the John Allen Hollingsworth Professor of Ethics and Professor of Medical Education. Childress is the author of numerous articles and several books on biomedical ethics, including Principles of Biomedical Ethics, Priorities in Biomedical Ethics, Who Should Decide? Paternalism in Health Care and Practical Reasoning in Bioethics (forthcoming). He served as chair of the department of religious studies, and ; as principal of U.Va. s Monroe Hill College, ; and as co-director of the Virginia Health Policy Center, In 1990, he was named Professor of the Year in the Commonwealth of Virginia by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and in 2004, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities. 1953brochure.indd /7/ :44:43 AM

7 TUESDAY, MAY 14, :30 4:45 p.m. Wireless Technology Wireless body sensor networks have emerged in recent years to address a significant and persistent challenge in health care and the continuous, non-invasive collection of high-quality patient data allows for personalized health care. John Lach, professor and chair of the Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will discuss ongoing application-focused BSN research at the U.Va. Center for Wireless Health and partner institutions. Come hear about how these sensors have been engineered to answer some of the biggest questions in the health care industry and how the information gathered from the devices can enhance patient care. 3:30 4:30 p.m. Nursing Alumni Pavilion IX Open House with Dean Dorrie Fontaine Pavilion IX on the Lawn Nursing alumni are invited to join Dorrie Fontaine, dean of the School of Nursing, for this open house and reception in her Pavilion on the Lawn. 5 6:15 p.m. The Civil War at the Sesquicentennial: How Do Americans Understand Their Great National Crisis? Americans have debated the meanings of the Civil War ever since the guns fell silent at Appomattox in April, Gary W. Gallagher, the John L. Nau III Professor in the Corcoran Department of History, will explore the major ways in which the generation that experienced the conflict chose to remember it and the degree to which their differing memories resonate today. Gallagher has written or edited more than 30 books about the Civil War, most recently The Union War (2011) and Becoming Confederates: Paths to a New National Loyalty (2013). 5 6:15 p.m. Tour of the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center This 150,000-square-foot building for outpatient cancer care is named for Virginia State Sen. Emily Couric, who died from pancreatic cancer in The Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center opened its doors in the spring of 2011 and is one of an elite group of National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers. NCI centers are national leaders in cancer research, prevention, detection and treatment. Note: Tour is limited to the first 75 registrants. Due to the extensive size of the building and walking requirements of this tour, this event is not recommended for those with limited mobility. 6:30 8:15 p.m. Thomas Jefferson Society Celebration Dinner Memorial Gym Join us for cocktails and dinner as the Class of 1963 is welcomed to its first dinner with the Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni! Enjoy the music of Wilfrid 88 Keys Wilson as you catch up with friends from all years. Casual attire. Note: Parking for this event will be available at Alumni Hall and the Central Grounds Parking Garage. 8:30 9:45 p.m. Band Party with The Four Freshmen After dinner, walk across the street to Alumni Hall for a band party featuring The Four Freshmen! The Four Freshmen were one of the top vocal groups of the 1950s, and formed the bridge between 40s ensembles like the Mel-Tones and harmony-based rock n roll bands such as the Beach Boys, as well as groups like Spanky & Our Gang and the Manhattan Transfer. Neuman, architect for the University, as he explains the changing landscape of the University Grounds and, in particular, the restoration project of the Rotunda and Academical Village. Before coming to the University in 2004, Neuman held similar positions at Stanford University and the University of California, Irvine. He is a prolific journal contributor and has written four books. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a LEED-Accredited Professional and holds degrees in liberal arts, architecture and American studies. 9 9:50 a.m. Global Health at U.Va.: A Declaration of Interdependence Come hear about cutting-edge infectious disease research in the field of medicine. Join Dr. Richard L. Guerrant (Med 68), founding director of U.Va. s Center for Global Health, to learn about how the University is working to improve health around the world. After his early career working in the Congo, Bangladesh, Brazil and South Africa; providing for more than 500 U.Va. students projects working in developing areas abroad; and training more than150 fellows from the U.S. and abroad, Guerrant launched one of the first trans-university Centers for Global Health in the country in He has edited seven books, including the major textbook Tropical Infectious Diseases, and has published more than 500 papers and reviews. After being inducted into the TJ Society, you are invited back to the TJ Reunion every year.
