Has my stewardship of the blessings entrusted to me been such that I could respond joyfully, Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!? Novena Prayer Cards for Pope Benedict XVI This year all the Knights of Columbus were encouraged to join in a special novena for Pope Benedict XVI, which began on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 11 th and concluded Monday, April 19 th, the fifth anniversary of the Holy Father s election in We have been praying for the pope and for his pastoral mission, asking God to protect, strengthen and uplift our beloved Holy Father at this time of considerable challenge. On Sunday, May 23 rd, after all the Masses, the Knights of Columbus will be handing out the same prayer cards that were used for the above mentioned novena, so that all parishioners can also pray for our Holy Father, Pope Benedict, XVI. RESPECT LIFE If there is a lack of respect for the right to life and to a natural death, if human conception, gestation and birth are made artificial, if human embryos are sacrificed to research, the conscience of society ends up losing the concept of human ecology and, along with it, that of environmental ecology. It is contradictory to insist that future generations respect the natural environment when our educational systems and laws do not help them to respect themselves. 6 An Adult Education Class You Don t Want to Miss! On Sunday, May 23 rd, 2010, we are delighted to have with us at our Sunday Adult Education Class, Mr. Dennis Krantz, a recent convert to Catholicism, who will be speaking on the topic of Jewish Roots of Catholicism. Dennis is uniquely qualified to speak on this topic as he is Jewish. As Dennis states so eloquently, I lived my first 45 years as a Jew, then as a Completed Jew for 13 years, and came into the Catholic Church on April 3, Dennis story is fascinating! Dennis was born in Atlanta and has lived in Birmingham for over 35 years. He and his wife, Sara Ann, have two daughters and two grandchildren. Dennis is a UAB graduate, and he is a Teaching Director of a Men s Community Bible Study in Trussville. Community Bible Study is an interdenominational Bible study for the community. Dennis has led studies on Genesis, Acts of the Apostles and Revelations. In August, he will begin the study of the Gospel of Luke. Dennis has taught Sunday School for 10 years at Gardendale First Baptist Church. The Adult Education class begins at 9:45 a.m. in the Holy Family Room and ends at 10:45 a.m. Coffee and donuts will be served. Invite a friend. EWTN to Air Alzheimer s & Dementia Show EWTN global television s The Abundant Life hosted by Johnette Benkovic will air Dementia and Alzheimer s: The Challenge and the Triumph on May 17 th at 9:00 p.m. CT; May 18 th at 1:00 a.m. CT and May 21 st at 1:00 p.m. It is also available via radio, SIRIUS satellite, and streaming Internet ( The show s guest will be Birmingham resident Ellen Marie Edmonds, author of the book EMBRACING DEMENTIA: A Call to Love, published by DeetBrari. Edmonds shares her story of caring for her late husband, Frank, who had vascular dementia, while also caring for her first grandchild. In relating the parallels between the alpha and omega of life, Edmonds brings a message of hope and practical help to those affected personally or professionally by Alzheimer s and other dementia disease. Her book features a cover acclaim by Bishop Robert J. Baker, and is available in our Little Flower Gift Shoppe.
