2 ADVANCED SCHOOL OF BANKING The PBA Advanced School of Banking builds upon and expands the knowledge acquired at the PBA School of Banking. Banking professionals looking to continue their educational experience, in addition to those preparing to lead at all levels within their organization, will want to enroll. This three-year program is analogous to 200, 300 and 400-level college course study with the BankExec asset/liability simulation comprising a significant portion of Year 3. A variety of learning techniques, including lectures, small group teamwork, computer simulations, online learning, case studies, peer presentations, independent study and home extension problems, keep students interested and engaged. The school also provides an unparalleled opportunity to network with other professionals in the banking industry. How will this school prepare students for their banking future? Graduates will be well prepared to utilize new financial services knowledge and skills taught at the Advanced School of Banking. The application of these skills and knowledge will be important in assisting students in moving to the next level of their career, while paving the road for them to become leaders at any level within their organization. Students will graduate having a greater understanding of the multiple banking disciplines and how those disciplines work together within the bank. This course is ideal for: Banking professionals seeking to increase their knowledge, skill, and personal and professional growth; Mid-level management from all disciplines; Supervisory staff; Graduates of the PBA School of Banking; and Individuals entering banking from outside the industry motivated to expand their banking knowledge and skill. Additional Professional Development The American Bankers Association (ABA) will provide graduates of the PBA s Advanced School of Banking eligibility to apply for Stonier s Accelerated two-year program. 5 FIRST YEAR COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Banking Environment Past, Present & Future Developing Management Talent This course identifies the significant differences between managerial and non-managerial work, focusing on the personalities and skill sets associated with leadership success. Discussions and case studies will be utilized to explore the essential skills needed to perform successfully as a manager. Discussion teams will use a practical Performance Improvement Model to build personal development plans for future leaders. Macro Economics Effective Communications This course highlights the importance of effective communication in today s dynamic and complex banking environment, and is designed to achieve two objectives: Analizing the major barriers preventing effective interpersonal communication, and prescribing specific behavioral strategies for overcoming those barriers. Fundamentals of Bank Financial Statements The faculty will define and explain bank financial statements, with special emphasis on the balance sheet and income statement and an introduction to key ratios. Understanding Principled Center Leadership Participants will consider their core values and stakeholder obligations as a foundation for developing a principle centered approach to leadership; then develop a personal leadership mission. Seven timeless principles for effective leadership will be presented, and students will be challenged to develop effective leadership strategies. Case studies and debriefing discussions will allow participants to assess how well they walk the talk as Principle Centered Leaders. Competitive Marketing Strategies This course will be delivered in two parts: Part I will focus on competitive marketing strategies and Part II focuses on customer experience management. Part I, competitive marketing strategies initial focus is on the role of marketing in the organization, while the second focus addresses competitive marketing strategy in terms of what it is, how you develop it, and how it relates to defining your organization s competitive advantage. To bring the two sections together, we will focus on customer experience management strategy and define the elements for developing and successfully delivering this competitive marketing strategy. How Do Banks Generate/Measure Revenue & Performance This course curriculum is designed to familiarize students with components of the spread, fee income sources, product types, specific financial industry performance indicators, as well as the various types of management information being utilized by bankers to measure performance. The course stresses the increasing importance of meaningful and useful management information in the sales and service process, as well as the profitability, incentive, productivity and performance implications. Technology Strategy While the day to day pressures of managing balance sheets and regulatory requirements seem overwhelming, smart banks sense that the weight of competitive pressures make it even more important to develop and execute on strategies that will ensure their banks success going forward. This session will look at emerging trends in banking technology, products and services, and provide keen insight into developing the strategies, infrastructure, tools and staff needed to deliver them successfully. Employee Engagement Research has shown that the driver of performance is the engagement level of a bank s employees. Engagement differs from employee satisfaction in one important aspect the deep emotional bond employees feel toward the bank and their direct managers. During this session we will explore specific ways to build engagement through the bank. Understanding Interpersonal Behaviors for Effectiveness In many banks, vast amounts of work time are wasted by misunderstandings and conflicts. This can be avoided through greater understanding and acceptance of those with whom we interact. Using the StrengthsFinder assessment as our cornerstone, we will offer methods to appreciate and leverage the unique gifts each person brings to work. Compliance Planning Courageous Leadership & Organizational Culture This course will introduce the concepts and techniques of Values- Based Leadership and provide the student with an understanding of the fundamentals of building effective business cultures. It will describe the challenges, responsibilities and risks faced by those employing a proactive, values-based leadership approach. Application exercises constructed upon this conceptual framework will provide hands-on opportunities to develop practical implementation plans. Deposit Accounts & Their Impact on Profitability The course is designed to familiarize students with fund using, fund providing, and fee-based or non-fund products and services offered by financial institutions. In addition, the course will focus on the impact of funds transfer pricing, fee income, related operating expenses, and the importance of average balances of deposit products, as well as examine stated maturities, re-pricing, durations, cash flows and blended rate of these products. Mobile Strategies Students will understand the importance of the engagement and utilization of mobile devices from a relationship-based and communication perspective. Faculty will provide data, statistics and real-world examples of how mobile devices can and are being utilized as an effective business communication tool to help connect and engage with customers and potential customers. Navigating the Politics of Business Navigating the Politics of Business is an interactive course that provides a principle-centered approach to aligning a manager s individual goals with bank goals and advancing their mutual agendas. The curriculum offers practical strategies for working with, and through, challenging organizational issues and difficult human interactions. A facilitated class networking period encourages discussion of real-world situations and exploration of possible solutions.

7 SECOND YEAR COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Time Management This course is designed to help students achieve five objectives of effective time management. Participants will learn how to manage time effectively and efficiently, manage themselves, projects, teams and develop strategies for efficiently managing the 3M s of time management. The students will learn to develop strategies for managing their personal clock and how to manage activities assigned to that clock. Current Economic Impacts in Financial Services Bank Financial Statements II This course focuses on an in-depth analysis of the balance sheet and income statement. Students will be required to conduct basic trend and comparative analysis and benchmarking. In addition, they will be introduced to risk management, capital, credit, liquidity and interest rate risk. Innovative Retail Strategies Enterprise Risk Management Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) provides a comprehensive view of the nature and level of risk to which the organization is exposed. By forming a clear picture of the overall risk and the interaction of the various risk components, management is better able to assess, manage, and react to the uncertainties associated with business opportunities. ERM links the entity risk profile with the financial rewards of the business. Risk and opportunities are no longer viewed in isolation, but are now viewed within the context of the entity s strategy, established risk appetite and current risk profile. This course will demonstrate the fundamentals of developing an authentic ERM framework, as well as the benefits to the organization of using ERM to enhance performance. Strategy Planning In this course students will learn important aspects and application techniques of the three-step strategic process: strategy; business model; action plan. ALM I Financial Risk Management This course covers ALM concepts including funding GAP, duration GAP and Income Simulation. In addition, advance investment ideas will be introduced including the valuation of callable bonds and mortgage-backed securities. Happiness Advantage Debrief & Application Students will be required to read the text The Happiness Advantage, written by Shawn Achor. The text will be discussed and analyzed by faculty with expertise in the study or of emotional intelligence. Students will then be asked to develop practical application of its content to improve both professional and personnel goals, objectives and interactions. Performance Management, Coaching and Counseling Who loves dealing with performance management? It can be painful, complicated and it often keeps us up at night. Executives and managers can set-up easy to follow systems that minimize this challenge and maximize results for the organization and its employees. This course will provide tools and applicable strategies that will allow for a more natural flow in the process of communicating performance issues and communications overall. Delivery Channel Optimization Today there are far more choices for how, when and where to bank than ever before. The role of technology in banking continues to grow at a rapid pace, yet people still can make a meaningful difference in developing, building and sustaining a banking relationship. In this class, the topic of Channel Optimization will be explored to better understand the choices available to banks, as well as, understanding how to make the right strategic decisions to match the right delivery channels with the correct target audiences. Operational Planning This class provides a step-by-step process for line managers to build practical division/department/branch plans that help convert bank strategic plans into solid results. The curriculum offers suggestions for bankers working in highly developed planning environments as well as those working in less rigorous planning environments. Techniques for managing daily production pressures will be stressed so that long-term bank strategies command the attention they deserve. Wealth Management Strategies & Their Impact on Profitability Wealth Management solutions provide a great option for incremental sales opportunities to existing banking clients and non-interest income for the bank s bottom line. Students will learn how the inclusion of wealth management services favorably enhances household profitability and banking relationships including a wealth management component that will maintain a greater sense of loyalty. HR Strategies to Avoid Supervisory Pitfalls This course is designed around a case study-class discussion model that highlights several critical supervisory pitfalls to avoid while leading groups of people. Not only do these pitfalls get in the way of effectively engaging employees, but they can be costly to the organization and the manager/leader personally. Class discussion around these topics enhances the experiential learning and leads to a lively interactive atmosphere! Commercial Lending For Community Banks This class is structured to provide participants an overview of various commercial loan products, and the underwriting techniques for each loan. Practical underwriting examples will be shared in order to give the students a hands-on experience with various types of commercial loans. Students will learn how loan purpose influences structure and how repayment sources should support the loan purpose. Applying Principle Centered Leadership This course builds on the first year course in Understanding Principle Centered Leadership to present a comprehensive model for building high-performing organizations. Bankers will be challenged to evaluate the performance effectiveness of their specific bank department. They will also develop specific applicable action plans for taking their bank business unit, not to the next level but to the highest levels of effectiveness!

9 THIRD YEAR COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Team Building This one-hour team building overview presents a combination of strategies and practical application opportunities for banker students to build and manage proactive, productive teams while completing the BankExec course. Additionally it suggests how to overcome common dysfunctional behaviors that may otherwise decrease team effectiveness. Real world application of course content will assist participants in enhancing leadership effectiveness and team performance in their home bank. Introduction to BankExec The BankExec Simulation provides a learning environment for the participants by exposing them to the overall problems of managing a commercial bank through a hands-on computer simulation. They learn to work with other team members to make real world strategic decisions within a set timeframe. Team members strive to achieve bank goals in the areas of profitability, stock price, and capital adequacy through decisions based on their goals and objectives. BankExec is designed to provide an understanding of the decision-making process with regard to loans, deposits, investments and other aspects of bank management over a five quarter time-frame. BankExec is an exciting and valuable learning experience that stimulates and challenges each banker. Formal presentations explaining decision making and strategic processes will be given by the student teams in front of a panel of bank CEO s. Customer Experience Management This course is designed to challenge bankers to reshape their thinking beyond providing customer satisfaction to creating a customer experience that inspires loyalty, trust, and advocacy. Viewing the progression of the banking experience from a customer s vantage point the bankers will learn how environmental and behavioral efforts can result in differentiation that generates bottom-line rewards. The Economy & Bank Strategy This course ties in the Advanced School s first year fundamentals course and the second year s economic conditions to the bank simulation. The relationships of economic variables, Federal Reserve actions and business cycles to bank asset/liability decisions is discussed using current circumstances as well as BankExec conditions. The purpose of the course is to provide real world economic foundations of bank decision making so the student can understand how the economy creates challenges not only for the BankExec course choices but also to the decisions being made by the student s own bank. Asset/Liability Management II with Mock ALCO Meeting ALM II provides an opportunity for participants to expand their knowledge and understanding of how interest rate risk concerns impact decisions faced by bank management. They will learn various asset/liability management, liquidity and interest rate risk management strategies and configurations, seeing first-hand the roles the investment portfolio can play in improving financial performance. Students will engage in a mock ALCO meeting using the current environment to make decisions. Presentation & Reporting Skills for BankExec BankExec teams will learn a storyboard process for developing high-impact, professional, presentations and reports. Course provides practical preparation for BankExec Presentations at the PBA Advanced School of Banking, and Real World Presentations in the future at their home banks. Strategic Leadership This course will teach students the value of a well designed strategy, based on fact and grounded in reality is determined by the incremental performance improvement of the enterprise. Faculty will show how utilization of strategy as a road map for future performance leads to action. Students will learn that sustainable execution moves beyond organizational agreement, clarity of roles and responsibilities, commitment and enthusiasm to building effective processes and systems that support the achievement of the strategic initiatives. Students will learn how dynamic leadership of the process results in the proper substance over form of authentic strategy development. Marketing Case Study Students will be challenged to formulate a marketing initiative with strategies and tactics to support their specific brand position and achieve a defined objective. This real-world approach will enable them to demonstrate understanding of brand positioning and ways to incorporate the appropriate marketing mix for the desired outcome. Career Development Selling Yourself This course is designed to help students grow their own career and grow their workforce. Students will understand that by nature, individuals are most critical of their own personal challenges and don t always see their own value. This lack of self-awareness and value often keeps professionals from furthering career development. However, individuals are often shocked when bypassed for a promotion or not moving up the ladder faster than anticipated. In this class students will explore ways to create a career that makes sense for them, and how to build and their value for the betterment of the organization and themselves. Your Banking Environment Panel This open forum session allows students to learn about timely banking issues that may not be covered in other parts of the curriculum. Students decide what they want to know about the banking environment today and then spontaneously ask a panel of seasoned bank executives for answers, opinions, and advise. The result is an interactive learning approach that covers topics as far reaching and diverse as the students decide to take it a reality experience that is both fun and practical. *Honor Students will be selected from those students who have completed the three years of instruction and satisfactorily completed all required Home Extension Problems and group project work. Students receiving the highest cumulative score will be designated as Honor Students. Their respective Chief Executive Officer will be notified of this achievement and those students will be recognized at the 2015 PBA Spring Summits and pabanker Magazine.
