Representatives from the academic support activities of 14 Chicago area two-and fouryear colleges and universities will meet at Governors State, April 18, to exchange experiences and techniques of teaching and to discuss the formation of a professional association. The personnel, who provide their institutions with such services as tutoring, reading labs and second-language instruction, will participate in four workshops. THE GSU-COMMUNITY CHORALE... will perform Haydn's "Missa Solemnis" in the University's Music Recital Hall, Sunday, April 27, at 4 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Pictured above, Director Rudolf Strukoff rehearses the Chorale. Soloists are (front row, left to right): Janet Rinehart, Park Forest South; LaVerne Jackson, Markham; Donna Strukoff, Park Forest South; James Royer, Riverdale; Anthony Lawrence, Blue Island; and Robert Strukoff, Wheaton. AREA MUSICIANS PERFORM... Fifty-three instrumental musicians from 20 communities throughout the southern Chicagoland region will perform in a free public concert by the GSU Community Symphonic Band under the direction of Robert Hindsley, community professor of music, Su nday, April 20, at 4 p.m. COMING EVENT... Carl Stokes, NBC-TV commentator and former mayor of Cleveland, will speak at GSU, Friday, April 25, at 8 p.m. Tickets,available at the University Theatre, are: $2 for the general public; $1 for GSU faculty, staff, Alumni Association members, and senior citizens; and free to GSU students. IN CELEBRATION... of the birthday of the late Duke Ellington, GSU's Jazz Combo and Big Band will present a free concert of tunes composed or recorded by Ellington and other Jazz greats, in the Music Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 17. Co-sponsored by the Union of African People at GSU and the Duke Ellington Society, the concert will be followed by a reception. BPA EXAMS... Quantitative and written competency examinations, required for BPA students, will be April 23, 24, and 26. Contact x2241 for the room locations and times.
3 -2- GLOWING GRAD... Michael Townsend, who received his master's degree in human services from GSU, has been awarded a $500 scholarship by The Order of United Commercial Travelers of America (UCT). He is a doctoral student in the Nova University D.P.A. program, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Townsend is the director of the Ada McKinley Living/Learning Center. AN ART EXHIBIT... of works by central and southern Illinois artists will be on display in GSU's Visual Arts Gallery, through May 8, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., 1ondays Thursdays. The 27 works included in the exhibit are products of 19 artists who are also professors of art at central and southern Illinois universities. PUBLISHED... PRINCE McLEMORE (HLD) has authored an article entitled "An Earthquaking Case Study" which appears in the Spring, 1980 issue of the Georgia Social Science Journal... EFRAIM GIL (CAS) co-authored with Enid Lucchesi the chapter on "Citizen Participation in Planning" in the 1979 edition of The Practices of Local Government Planning which was published by the City Management Association, Washington, D.C. The publication is the standard reference book for planners and is published every ten years. "CROSS CULTURAL COMPARISON... of Women's Legal Status in Cuba, China and the United States" wi 11 be the topic of a lecture sponsored by the Women's Resource Center at 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, in Bl325. The guest speaker wi 11 be Attorney ari an Neudel. GSUings... LOU MULE' (CAS) making presentation as the main speaker at the recent semiannual meeting of the District #8 Garden Clubs of Illinois at the Oak Lawn Holiday Inn. He presented an i 11 ustrated 1 ecture on "Landscaping with Prairie Plants"... GEORGE MICHEL (HLD) receiving appointment as a consultant in the Allied Health Sciences of the California Community Colleges. He will represent the community colleges at an American Medical Association symposium on accreditation in the health sciences profession later this month... EFRAIM GIL (CAS) participating in the "Energy and the l ay We Live" symposium series at Thornton Community College. At the March 26th "Where Do We Go from Here?" session, he presented a paper on "Conservation and Renewable Sources of Energy"... TULSI SARAL (HLD) conducting a weekend workshop in Richton Park for single adults, April The workshop is entitled "Single Experience." For further details and to register, contact Saral at SARAL guest speaking at the free April 24th meeting of the Third Ear, an on-going rap group for single-again adults of all ages. The lecture/discussion will concentrate on "How to Achieve and Maintain Interpersonal Relationships." The group will meet at 8 p.m. at Faith United Protestant Church in Park Forest. PAT BURKHARDT (UR) is coordinator... RUDOLF STRUKOFF (CAS) being elected secretary/treasurer of the Chicago Singing Teachers' Guild and being appointed to the board of directors of the Chicago Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing... DALE MAX (BPA) and Dale Velkovitz leading group discussions at the Illinois Institute of Technology's "Dialogue on Productivity," April 8. Participants included top local corporate, academic and government representatives... JEAN SINGER (Library) being elected to the Library Computer System Advisory Committee, which will advise the Policy Council on problems, concerns and priorities of the 14 participating institutions.
