The physical version can be purchased in the Core Values: Excellence Integrity Collegiality Inclusiveness May 10, 2013, Newsletter from President Bob Simpson Schedule of Classes for Fall Term Now Available in Print and Online The Fall-semester class schedule can be purchased in the Bookstore and can be downloaded for free from CypressCollege.edu. As the end of the semester and final exams approach, the Cypress College Library has started TextALibrarian, a new service for students, staff and faculty. The service officially launched last week, according to Librarian Joyce Peacock. TextALibrarian provides better service for everybody and immediate access to ask questions about how to find books, pay fines, provide information on searching the library s database, and how to find reference information or materials that s available, Peacock said. Bookstore for $2; it is a free download from the campus website. Instruction for the fall semester begins on August 26, with latestart courses beginning the week of September 9, and the second Half- Semester starting on October 21. The schedule for summer is also available in the Bookstore and online. The summer term begins on June 17. TextALibrarian Expands Student Access to Cypress College Library Services Strategic Conversation #14 Recap, Background On March 12, 2013, the North Orange County Community College District held its Strategic Conversation #14: Changing the Conversation: California Community Colleges & the New Normal. The event was held at Fullerton College and participants were able to choose two of the four following topics to discuss: Topic #1: The Students of the Future Topic #2: Advances in Technology TextALibrarian arrives just in time for the final month of the spring semester, and will continue to be available during the hours the Library is open. Information is available from the Library page on the campus website at cypresscollege.edu. The Library s link is also on the Cypress College s website home page. To initiate a chat, users simply click on the red Questions? Ask! button located at the top left portion of the Library s website is. A user-friendly message box appears with a Continued on page 2 screen for different options to start a live chat, text message or . The service can also be initiated by texting the word cypress to from a cell phone. Academic Senate Honors Faculty With Awards Three Cypress College faculty have been selected by the Academic Senate as recipients of the body s annual excellence awards. 2 CONTINUED: Strategic Conversation #14 Continued from page 1 Topic #3: The Changing Community College Mission Topic #4: Workforce Development Issues New this year was a session in which participants gathered in groups according to institution and talked about action plans to bring back to their campus. The background papers, a summary of the topic comments, and the campus action plans can be found on the NOCCCD website at: StrategicConversation.htm. Ergonomics Training Available This Week and Next To safeguard NOCCCD employees health and wellness, as well as to comply with Cal/OSHA requirements to identify and eliminate hazards that could potentially cause repetitive motions injuries to employees, the District is providing office ergonomics training for employees. This training is required for all classified office personnel, including managers. Upcoming sessions are: May 15, from 9-10 a.m. at FC; May 17, from 9-10 a.m. at Cypress, and 1-2 p.m. at Anaheim Campus; and finally, on May 23, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Anaheim Campus. CONTINUED: Academic Senate Honors Faculty With Annual Awards The first two are selected for their work in the classroom, while the Charger Award is presented for work outside of the classroom. BUDGET CENTRAL: What is the NOCCCD Budget Timeline? As we start to wind down the school year, the budget centers at each school in the District are already gearing up for the new year and preparing the tentative budget for As a refresher, here s the NOCCCD budget timeline: January: Review of Governor s budget; finalize District Strategic Directions and annual priorities; review of District-wide Strategic Plan; budget assumptions drafted February-May: Council on Budget and Facilities reviews monthly budgets, updates assumptions for next fiscal year; tentative budget allocations received and each entity builds a tentative budget. June: Tentative budget is presented to the Board of Trustees. This year we had quite a few nominees who were so well qualified that the job of the Senate was a bit difficult, said Academic Senate President Gary Zager. Over the course of several senate July-August: Analyze year-end results and incorporate these into local planning; update proposed budget assumptions, as needed, based on updates from the state. September: Final budget is presented to the Board of Trustees for approval. For those wanting to learn more about the NOCCCD budget development process, the third and final NOCCCD Budget Allocation Model Forum will take place on Thursday, May 23 from 3 5 p.m. at the Anaheim Campus, Rooms Information on how funds are allocated in the District and how these funds are linked to the Strategic Plan will be shared. Annual Transfer Celebration to be Held Tuesday, University Reps Here The Cypress College Transfer Center will be hosting its Annual Transfer Celebration on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, from 2-4 p.m. It will be held in the Cypress College Complex in Room 414. A reception will be held along with distribution of certificates, and breakout sessions. The Annual Transfer Celebration is for all Cypress College students who have been accepted and are transferring to four-year universities and colleges, said Dalal Farsakh, an interim Student Services Tech in the Transfer Center. These students will be able to RSVP for this event Continued from page 1 with a copy of their acceptance letters by Friday, May 10, at the Transfer Center located on the second floor of the Student Center. After the celebration, university representatives from UCLA, CSUF, UCI and CSUDH will be having breakout sessions to welcome students to their respective universities. All students who have been admitted, or are pending admission, to one of these universities can come into the Transfer Center to also sign up for these breakout sessions. The honorees will be recognized at the President s 2013 Pre-Graduation Reception as well as during the Commencement ceremony this year. BRIEFLY The last day to submit purchase orders for the fiscal year is Monday, May 20, Invoices for payment ofthese purchase orders must be received and paid prior to June 30. The deadline for all other requests for checks or for payments on existing purchase orders for fiscal year is Thursday, June 13. Any requests received after that will be processed in the new fiscal year, which begins July 1, The Bursar s Office will begin accepting requests for Bursar purchase orders for on June 1. All deposits to be posted in must be turned in by June 20, All items to be charged to District accounts by the Bursar (such as Bookstore requisitions, etc.), are due in the Bursar s Office June 1. All outstanding receipts or documentation for expenditures should be submitted to the Bursar s Office immediately after the event and no later than June 6. All CCFAR final recaps for must be submitted by June 20. Failure to meet these deadlines affects the Bursar s Office ability to meet District deadlines for closing our books for For nearly a half-million students, Cypress College has been a springboard to their dreams. 4 North Orange County Community College District May 14, 2013 Board of Trustees Meeting Adjournment This evening s meeting is adjourned in honor of Dr. Kim Bartlett, who passed away suddenly in April. Since 2000, Kim served as the manager of the Disabled Student Programs and Services for both Cypress College and the School of Continuing Education. Described as patient and understanding by her staff, she was a tireless advocate for students with disabilities. Before she joined the DSPS department, Kim was the director of the Disability Resource Center at San Francisco State University, and the acting executive director of the Access Center of San Diego. Kim earned her Ph.D. in developmental psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and her bachelor s degree at Arizona State University. Her research has been published in the Merrill-Palmer Quarterly and the Journal of Social Issues. She was also a postdoctoral fellow in clinical psychology at Mental Health Systems in San Diego and a postdoctoral fellow in pediatric clinical psychology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. Tonight, we honor Kim, and extend our deepest sympathies to her family. # # #
