2 Season Tonight at the Wright Shaping tomorrow s world by JOIN US THIS SEASON for a talented array of performances from faculty and students to international artists. Samford Arts venues will brim with new productions, music, theatre, opera, dance and worship opportunities. Davis Architects Guest Artist Series Art and Design Theatre and Dance Performances featuring David Phelps whose performance is underwritten by John and Marsha Floyd April 26 28, 7:30 p.m. April 29, 2:30 p.m. Wright Center Our students and faculty are reaching audiences beyond the Samford stages, from a reading of professor Mark Castle's play in London's Houses of Parliament to conducting opera workshops throughout Birmingham. Ensembles are traveling the globe performing, and students are impacting communities through mission outreach. Samford s campus is buzzing with new students, facilities and energy to strengthen our commitment to innovative learning and core values supporting our Christian faith. With the support of the John and Rosemary Brown Family Foundation, the School of the Arts is excited to roll out a new curriculum this fall. This academic experience incorporates a multi-dimensional path for our students to be more collaborative, entrepreneurial and professionally fit. The cast includes Samford theatre students, local children and professionals. Based on the story of Genesis, from musical theatre greats Stephen Schwartz and John Caird comes a joyous and inspirational musical about parents, children and faith not to mention centuries of unresolved family business. Adam, Eve, Noah and the Father who created them deal with headstrong, cataclysmic actions of their respective children. DAVID PHELPS Over the greater part of the last two decades, David's artistry has grown to echo off the walls of Carnegie Hall, and vibrate the chandeliers in the White House and in countless halls and churches around the world. His masterful melodies have been turned into critically-acclaimed solo offerings, award-winning Gaither Vocal Band CDs and Gold and Platinum Gaither "Homecoming" collections. The School of the Arts is delighted to welcome him to our stages and appreciates the support of John and Marsha Floyd in underwriting his performance. 3 Tonight AT THE WRIGHT GAITHER VOCAL BAND Sept. 8, 7 p.m., Wright Center A full evening of entertainment and meaningful music is a rare treat anytime, but when the occasion includes the best-loved voices in gospel music it's a must see celebration. HARD TRAVELIN WITH WOODY written and performed by Randy Noojin Jan. 25, 7 p.m., Wright Center Hop a box car through the Dustbowl with Woody Guthrie and commune with the spirit, stories and songs of America's iconic folksinger, saint-of-the-workingman and poet-of-the-people in this critically acclaimed, award-winning multimedia solo show packed with Woody's spirit, music and artworks. THREE ON A STRING Sept. 28, 7 p.m., Wright Center Celebrating 46 years in the entertainment business, virtuoso musicians and comedians Jerry Ryan, Bobby Horton, Brad Ryan and Andy Meginniss have performed with Red Skelton, Barbara Mandrell, Jeff Foxworthy, George Lindsey, Ray Stevens and many more. They come to Samford this fall to help us kick off the new school year and welcome new students and their families to Birmingham. ASHLEY CAMPBELL Nov. 3, 7 p.m., Wright Center Known for her work alongside her father, legendary music artist Glen Campbell, Ashley has developed her own sound and enthusiastic following. Banjo and guitar player, singer and songwriter, Ashley has talent that matches the genius legacy of her family. During the concert, Ashley shares stories and images from her childhood and her time performing with her father. Her hit song, "Remembering," is a tribute from loving daughter to beloved Dad. SOZO CHILDREN S CHOIR April 5, 7 p.m., Wright Center The Sozo Children's Choir includes 25 Ugandans sharing cultural singing and dancing with authentic African instruments. In May 2010, Sozo Children began with 17 children and now gives care to 121 children providing shelter, clothing, education, nutrition and medical and emotional needs. Sozo is a Greek term meaning to save or rescue, both spiritually and physically. These children are being raised in Christ in their culture by Ugandan Christian adults to become future leaders of Uganda. CHRISTMAS WITH ACT OF CONGRESS copresented with Alabama Symphony Orchestra Red Diamond SuperPOPS! Dec. 1, 7 p.m., Wright Center The all acoustic progressive bluegrass group Act of Congress was selected as the 2016 artist for Keep Alabama Beautiful, and was voted Birmingham's Best Band for 2016 by Birmingham magazine and AL.com. 4 Davis Architects GUEST ARTIST SERIES VADYM KHOLODENKO copresented with the Fletcher and Nell Morris Piano Competition Oct. 5, 7:30 p.m., Brock Recital Hall Van Cliburn International Piano Competition gold medalist, Vadym Kholodenko has emerged as one of the most musically dynamic and technically gifted performers of his generation, heralded for interpretations that are "impeccable, tasteful and vibrant, and also something more: imaginative." (Cleveland Plain Dealer) JAMIE BARTON sponsored by Dr. Chandler and Jane Paris Smith and copresented with Birmingham Chamber Music Society and Opera Birmingham Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m., Brock Recital Hall Grammy nominee American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton has been described by The Guardian as "a great artist, no question, with an imperturbable steadiness of tone, and a nobility of utterance that invites comparison not so much with her contemporaries as with mid-20th century greats such as Kirsten Flagstad." She has claimed virtually all of the highest awards in the world of opera including the Beverly Sills Artist Award, Richard Tucker Award, Cardiff Singer of the World and was the winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER VIENNA TO HOLLYWOOD copresented with Birmingham Chamber Music Society Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m., Brock Recital Hall The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) is one of 11 constituents of the largest performing arts complex in the world, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Vienna to Hollywood features five exceptional musicians: Wu Qian and Juho Pohjonen (piano); Danbi Um and Sean Lee (violin); and Mihai Marica (cello) performing Schubert: Fantasie in F-minor for Piano, Four Hands, D. 940, Op. 103, Schubert: Fantasy in C-major for Violin and Piano, D. 934, Op. 159, and Korngold: Suite for Piano Left Hand, Two Violins, and Cello, Op. 23. This diverse exhibition by these 20 artists reflects their reactions to the cultural exchange and issues discussed at the seminar. The exhibition has traveled the United States extensively the past two years, and makes its only stop in Alabama for the exhibition at Samford. Two of the featured artists in this exhibition are Samford Arts faculty Joe Cory and Larry Thompson. FROM SKETCH TO STAGE: A RETROSPECTIVE OF THEATRE DESIGN BY ERIC OLSON Jan. 22 Feb. 21 Feb. 1, 4 5:30 p.m., Designer's reception and gallery talk Eric Olson served the Samford University community as theatre faculty and designer for 41 years. Honoring Eric's recent retirement, the art department in partnership with the Department of Theatre and Dance presents a retrospective of Olson's design work, exhibiting the process from initial sketch to finished stage. With humanity and humor, this play tells the story of the Magrath family collectively dealing with their past and coming to terms with their individuality. Based on a Chinese parable, Brecht s masterwork about the conflict between law and justice asks profound questions about who is right and wrong in complex situations. 11 LESLIE S. WRIGHT FINE ARTS CENTER The 2,500-seat Wright Center is a classic proscenium theatre, built over two levels but designed so that no seat is more than 150 feet from the stage. It features state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems to support world-class performances. Recent additions include HD projector and screen, rigging, concessions, and overall painting and lobby refurbishment. 2. BROCK RECITAL HALL This beautiful performance hall seats 300 and is home to the Davis Architects Guest Artist Series, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster and Friends Series, the Birmingham Chamber Music Society, and numerous faculty and student performances throughout the year. With adjustable acoustics, the hall is ideal for ensemble concerts, one-act operas and theatre productions. 3. HARRISON THEATRE Steeped in over 40 years of theatre history at Samford, Harrison Theatre is a 288-seat proscenium-thrust design with a 33-foot revolve. It hosts student productions of dance, opera and theatre, and is home to the Michael J. and Mary Anne Freeman Theatre and Dance Series, and the Dr. Chandler and Jane Paris Smith Opera Series. 4. BOLDING STUDIO Bolding Studio, a versatile 150-seat space, is used for music recitals, musical theatre revues and theatre productions. 5. SAMFORD ART GALLERY The gallery is home to exhibits throughout the year featuring works of students, faculty and guest artists. Located in Swearingen Hall, the gallery is open Monday Friday, 9 a.m. 4 p.m. and is free to the public. 6. ART LOFTS The newly opened Art Lofts is an expansive and modern educational space for visual arts faculty and students in sculpture, ceramics, painting, design and drawing. The open and bright interior features an atrium connecting two levels of classrooms, small studios, large workrooms and office space. 7. INTERIOR DESIGN SUITE Interior architecture students have a new 3,500-square-foot creative studio that includes offices, a design studio, project review area and conference space. This suite allows interaction and mentoring among students. 8. DANCE STUDIOS Two new studios are now available to the Samford Dance Company in Seibert Hall. These first on-campus dance studios make the dance program even more accessible to all students. The rehearsal studios are named in memory of former Samford student and adjunct choreographer Julie Averett Phillips
