2 S&R Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports talented individuals with great potential and high aspirations in the arts, sciences and social entrepreneurship, especially those who are furthering international cultural collaboration. 1

3 HOW IT WORKS S&R catalyzes emerging, creative visionaries across diverse fields who aspire to improve the world. S&R programs provide individuals the time and space they need to think big and move with courage to go further and faster than they could alone. Through a unique methodology developed over the past 15 years, individuals are provided with recognition, funding, inspirational space and a supportive community, facilitating creativity, innovation and personal growth. 4 S&R Foundation currently grants several awards and fellowships the S&R Washington Award, Ueno Award, Kuno Award, Halcyon Fellowship, and Fillmore Fellowship. This is the first step in recognizing and nurturing individuals with talent in the arts, sciences, and social entrepreneurship. 5 SUPPORT & INCUBATE Diana Sierra RECIPIENT: HALCYON FELLOWSHIP Diana Sierra built her career in industrial design, working for companies like Nike, Panasonic, and Energizer. When stationed in Uganda she was moved by the girls she met, who had stopped attending school due to a lack of menstrual protection, so she designed a prototype sanitary pad out of a mosquito net and an umbrella. As Diana was deciding whether to commit herself to this work fulltime, she was accepted into the first Halcyon cohort, committing herself to building and scaling this product through her new company, BeGirl. While in the program, she tested and tailored her products for different regions of Africa, raised working capital and built critical partnerships for distribution. As of June 2015, Be Girl has supplied 3,000+ girls with 4,095 pads, resulting in 2,700 girls reporting decreased anxiety and physical discomfort around menstruation and increasing participation in school by 2,850 girls. 4

6 SHOWCASE Dr. Sheila Walker RECIPIENT: KUNO AWARD FOR APPLIED SCIENCE Dr. Sheila Walker is harnessing scientific and social research to understand how to help children in stressful environments or facing adverse experiences have improved school outcomes and a better quality of life. Dr. Walker was featured as a speaker in the Illuminate Series in 2014 discussing neuroscience and education along with many leading experts in the field. Dr. Walker received her doctorate in Behavioral Genetics from Kings College London in 2005 and was recognized as the inaugural Kuno Award winner in She also serves on the national board of LIFT, a nonprofit dedicated to poverty alleviation. 5

7 INSPIRE & IMPACT Nabil Shehata RECIPIENT: S&R WASHINGTON AWARD Nabil Shehata, winner of S&R s Washington Award in 2015, is one of the best double bass players in the world by any account. Nabil has performed as a frequent guest of prestigious orchestras, such as the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lissabon, the Bremer Philharmoniker and the Münchener Kammerorchester. Inspiring young artists and spreading cultural diplomacy are very important to Nabil alongside his many professional commitments he has worked with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra (a orchestra that combines youth from Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Spain). Through S&R, he is leading the charge on the creation of the Fillmore Philharmonic here in DC. In 2015 he conducted S&R s Evermay Chamber Orchestra to provide live music for The Washington Ballet s Swan Lake to critical acclaim. 56

10 SUPPORT & INCUBATE FILLMORE Coming soon in 2016 The Fillmore is S&R s newest program we accept the first class of resident artists in September Through resident fellowships and innovative programming, Fillmore seeks to accelerate the growth of civic-minded artists from around the world. It will also grow and support the Washington, DC arts community, and embolden arts-interested, underserved youth. 9

11 SHOWCASE OVERTURES Overtures Program Metrics CONCERT ATTENDEES 4,261 SINCE 2012 Overtures attendees enjoy intimate music performances by talented rising stars throughout the year at Evermay Estate and the John F. Kennedy Center. Overtures has a loyal attendee base of circle members and many other arts and culture loving regular attendees. Around 2,000 come to the 9-10 concerts per season.
