1 Newsletter August 2017 Proudly supporting the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. Letter From Your New President: Hello, everyone! Well, here it is, summer of 2017, the start of the new fiscal year for the Philharmonic Guild and the induction of some new officers for your Board. I have been your Vice President and Fundraising Chair for the last two (2) years, and have now been elected to serve as your President. I truly take great pride and honor in serving in this position for many reasons. I don t know if anyone is aware of this fact but I am now the first male elected to this position, for a group that began in 1954! Just that alone is a great statement. I am following in some amazing footsteps set by Roslyn, Pamela, Mary, and countless others and will work diligently to carry their leadership forward. I got involved with the Guild having been raised in a household surrounded by classical music. My mother (and Guild member), Jean Gronhagen, and her twin sister Jane, are/ were classically trained pianists and I enjoyed singing in school. With joining the Guild, I stepped right into the fundraising efforts, primarily starting the Peachy Party and helping staff the sales tables at the Nutcracker Boutique. It seems we don t get much rest between our events and we are well into the planning and preparation for the Peachy Party (August 19th see page 3 for information), as well as structuring our Winter Holiday Dinner, to be held December 6th. In between that is our ever-popular Nutcracker Sales Boutique (year #22) held during the Thanksgiving Weekend scheduling of the holiday ballet, to which another performance on Friday afternoon was added. Volunteering is always a great way to get started. Contact anyone in the Guild to get more information on how you can join in on the fun or maybe to share an idea for a new event or fundraiser. As our city continues to thrive and grow, it is consistently ranking very high on various surveys on a national level. To that point, it is so awesome to know that one of our bragging rights is our Philharmonic Orchestra, led by a truly inspirational music director. The purpose of the Guild is to exclusively support the incredible Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra and the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Young Artists Solo Competition scholarship program. I thank you, in advance, for your support and trust in me to keep leading this great organization forward and I welcome the new opportunities and new members it will present. We look forward to seeing you at the first Guild Membership meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, September 13th. To the music in your soul! 4 COLORADO SPRINGS YOUTH SYMPHONY NEWS Elizabeth Leslie, Guild Scholarship Chairperson presented the awards to the winners of the 2017 Young Artist Solo Competition on May 7 at the annual Youth Symphony Spring Concert at the Pikes Peak Center. Each winner was called to the podium to receive their recognition and certificate during the afternoon performance. Jory Lane, the first-place winner, was featured in the program playing The Introduction and Rondo capriccioso Op. 28 by Camille Saint-Saens. The piece is particularly challenging, which is a testimony to Jory s mastery. The other winners were 2nd place, Rebecca Park, flute; 3rd place, Ciara McGuire, violin; and, 4th place, Jayna Powell, cello. Keven Stewart, Executive Director of the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association asserts the Guild continues to inspire greatness. NIGHT OF WHITE LIGHTS The Night of White Lights is a fundraising event for the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association. All funds raised will further the Association s mission: To provide for the artistic and educational development of young people within the Pikes Peak region. Night of White Lights is an unforgettable evening of live music, dancing, adult beverages and creative dress. When: Saturday, September 9, :00-10:00 pm. Where? It s a secret! It will be a classy indoor/outdoor venue in the downtown Colorado Springs area. Surprise location will be revealed the morning of the event! Everyone dresses in all white - fun or funky. 5 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Fran Pilch, Board Member of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and member of the Philharmonic Guild, is the author of a newly published book titled Invisible: Surviving the Cambodian Genocide. This account contains the story of Mac and Simone Leng, residents of Pueblo West who survived the Cambodian Genocide under Pol Pot for three years, eight months, and 20 days. The genocide, according to Dr. Pilch, is one of the most tragic events of the 20th Century and claimed the lives of 1/4 of the Cambodian population, more than 2 million people through execution starvation torture and disease. Under the brutal Khmer Rouge communist regime, cities were emptied and the population forced into labor camps. Cambodia was reduced to the Year Zero, a prehistory where no hint of Western influence would exist. Anyone who was educated or had a connection to the West had a target on his back. Fran frames Mac and Simone s compelling personal narrative with the context in which the genocide took place. As the book examines Mac and Simone s harrowing journey, the theme of the book is summarized as follows: The challenge was not just to survive but to survive without losing our humanity. Fran is available for presentations on the book to any interested groups. The book is available through Amazon and other bookstores, and is being released in a Kindle edition on July 27th. Dr. Pilch is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the United States Air Force Academy, where she served on the faculty for 17 years. She was awarded her B.A. from the University of Connecticut and her M.A. and Ph.D. in International Relations from Yale University. At the Air Force Academy, she developed and taught a course titled War Crimes, Genocide, and Human Rights. Her areas of expertise are International Law and Gender Violence. In fall 2017 she will be a Visiting Lecturer in Political Science at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She has served as a Fulbright-Hays Scholar in South Africa and a Fulbright Scholar in Mongolia, where she taught International Law at the School of Diplomacy, National University of Mongolia, in Ulaanbaatar. In she was named the Case Carnegie Colorado Professor of the Year. We are so very proud of Fran (who is also a killer piano player) and so fortunate to have her as a Philharmonic and Guild supporter. MAY MEMBERSHIP MEETING The May membership meeting was held on May 17th at the Gold Hill Mesa Community Center. We had a great turnout and a wonderful buffet from Dicky s Bar-B-Que, side dishes brought by members and desserts donated by our hosts at Gold Hill Mesa. Jacob Klock, CS Philharmonic violinist and fiddle player extraordinaire provided the musical entertainment. The board members were voted in by the membership and installation performed by Nancy Pittman. A check for $37,000 was given to the Philharmonic representing funds raised from Guild fundraising events. The final membership gathering of the year was a great ending to the season. Special thanks to Linda Johnson who has planned and executed all our meetings for the past several seasons.
