which will benefit our local youth With $24,000 already committed to Take Stock in Children and matching grants The Upper Keys Rotary Club's impact increases to $170,000 Here are some of the comments and ideas: Buses worked really well. Few complaints about parking we have to add "no vendor parking signs" at critical spots Admin parking lot (fire station) was heavily abused Parking at ICS could be great fund raiser for 2011 Parking at Montessori netted $5,000 More chairs/benches at rest areas (and beer for college) invite moto scooter vendor More - better marked - recycling bins Ads worked well - waiting for Patty's survey with $7,500 we had only half of last year's budget internet related ads seem to work best we have to get into other District Club's network and on District Website Frank Derfler's videos are a blast and will hopefully secure more TDC funds Vendors really happy about sales and free breakfast (should we keep the breakfast free?) Best show of all Nautical Flea Markets Friendly people - no visitor left empty-handed Prices for food are low - taking into consideration the poor
economy Raising beer prices just $1.00 could bring in an additional 6-8k We have to add soft ice machines - high profit Also slushies and lemonade Discussion about admitting other food vendors (with "promise" to donate back) Find a major corporate sponsor Ambivalent discussion about charging entry fees (cost of fencing, manpower, lines, token for free soda) Kids have to be better supervised and "managed" T-Shirts should be awarded to students who work more than their digestive tracts Here are our Flea Market videos (THANK YOU, FRANK DERFLER) Can't close the report without some pictures. If you recognize anybody, you are entitled to choose an alternate lunch item next week

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Bette Brown spearheads a Haiti initiative. She needs all the help she can get. The latest news from Laura Hagen and Marilyn Needam is really uplifting. They continue to help people everywhere they go. Last Sunday morning I received a call from Laura and she told me they spent Saturday helping people at a makeshift clinic up the road. I spoke with her again today, and evidently she was about to deliver a baby. Lot s of pregnant women thank God Laura and Marilyn are there. The clinic/orphanage is progressing nicely, with a lease pending, repairs under way, and locks changing. Laura will return to the states on March 6 th for a few days with her family, and then she, Dominga and I are flying back to Port-au-Prince on March 11 th. I am taking my video camera, and hope to bring back some video coverage of the location that Laura and Marilyn have found for their clinic. Naming opportunities are available!!!! Got an blast from the past last week for an old high school buddy, world famous print artist David Jansheski. He is donating one of his prints to the cause more on that as it progresses. Thanks David! The kids at Kelly Astins Montessori collected their parking money from the Rotary Nautical Flea market last weekend and donated it to Laura s clinic. How great is that! And Dominga Leroy sat at the Nautical Flea Market on both days, proceeds of which will also go to the cause. Donations continue to come in and I thank you all.. Please don t forget to forward this information to anyone you know that would be interested in donating. Make checks payable to the Upper Keys Rotary Foundation, Inc (we are a 501c3) c/o Bette Brown, First State Bank of the Florida Key, Overseas Highway, Key Largo, Fla I have also attached a recent article about Laura in Haiti that ran in last week s local paper. It is very informative. You can also check our website for the link to our Facebook page Upper Keys Rotary Heroes in Haiti to see more pictures. Also, find me on Facebook at bettejanebrown@gmail.com. Thanks again for all your love, prayers and support for this worthy cause.
Rotary International holds its annual 2010 convention in Montreal, Canada from June 20-23, Montreal is a sophisticated, yet friendly city offering an ideal setting for Rotarians to gather. More than 80 nationalities and ethnic groups reside in Montreal. According to those who regularly attend, the once-a-year event is truly one of the greatest ways to live the Rotary experience. Thousands of Rotarians gather to share stories, learn about Rotary and its programs, in addition to making new friends and connections from around the world. By participating in an RI Convention, you ll gain a broader appreciation of Rotary s global impact and strengthen your commitment to service. For those who are considering attending for the first time, you would be embarking on an experience that will inspire you, inform you about Rotary on an international level, and provide you with resources and motivation to move your club forward. Everyone learns about strengthening clubs and identifying service and fellowship opportunities by attending an RI Convention and listening to speakers, participating in workshops, visiting the Club and District Projects Exhibition, and talking to fellow Rotarians and other members of the family of Rotary. Rotary s vitality and impact flourishes with enthusiasm that results from attendance at RI Conventions. Registration for the Convention has already begun. Just go to On the site you will be able to register for the convention and the ticketed events; reserve your hotel; and purchase host event tickets. Registration can also be completed by downloading the registration form. Make this 2010 Rotary International Convention a very special one. Don t delay. Make your reservations now. WHAT IS THE ROTARY FOUNDATION SHARE SYSTEM? The SHARE system is the mechanism through which The Rotary Foundation Program awards are distributed worldwide. In the SHARE system, Annual Programs Fund contributions to The Rotary Foundation are transformed into Ambassadorial Scholarships, Matching Grants, Group Study Exchanges, and more. At the end of every contribution year, (ending 30 June) each Rotary district s contributions to the Annual Programs Fund are divided into two funds: 50% to World Fund 50% to the District Designated Fund ( DDF ) The 50 percent to the World Fund pays for worldwide programs available to all Rotary districts and clubs, regardless of their specific contributions. The district uses the remaining 50 percent or DDF to fund the Foundation programs it chooses to participate in, such as Ambassadorial Scholarships, credit toward the sponsor portion of a Matching Grant, an additional Group Study Exchange or simplified grants. THE THREE YEAR CYCLE An additional facet of the SHARE system is its unique funding cycle wherein Annual Programs Fund contributions are invested for three years and used for programs three years after they are received. The three year cycle gives districts time for program planning and participant selection and allows the Foundation to pay for administration and fund development costs from the earnings from those investments. The access earnings can also be used to support programs funding, thereby NO donation has been used for administration cost, but is spent in THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
PROGRAMS! To continue this process your donations are important for the future. It is time to give now and leave our legacy for Rotary year YOUR DISTRICT 6990 FOUNDATION COMMITTEE STANDS READY TO ASSIST YOU IN ACCESSING THESE FUNDS! OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION COMMITTEE CHAIR IS PDG JACK MARTIN, H/PHONE; ; HE WOULD BE HAPPY TO CONECT YOU WITH THE PROPER PERSON TO ASSIST YOU. The Club's website is up and running. Go to: Frank Derfler put a lot of work into this project. He needs your help to keep the site alive and attractive. You can him pictures and all bits and pieces of information you want on the Club's site at fderfler@gmail.com. This e-newsletter is for all our members who have and for all members who attended the last meeting, but can t remember, and for all members who missed the meeting, but want to know what they missed. Simply ignore typos and grammatical errors. I'm good at proof reading other peoples stuff, though I'm generous with my own writing. Some of your computers can read html (formatted) s, some of you can t - yet. I m curious how this endeavor works out, because some of you might receive the pictures as attachments (not good) and some of you will find the pictures embedded as they are supposed to be in a newsletter. I scale the pictures down to increase your download speed, because I don't know how many of you are still on a dial-up connection. So let s try to get this working. your feedback, error or omissions report, or the special message, you want to communicate to your Fellow Rotarians and I will be happy to include it in our (almost) weekly Newsletter. Though, I will not be able to assist you if you want to promote your business or if you are running for any office. Michael A. Mayer
