9 BUILDING CAPABILITY AROUND CULTURAL DIVERSITY The Cultural Competence Program (CCP) is an innovative range of online training courses and online resources designed to enable organisations to cost effectively train large numbers of people in the areas of cultural competence, diversity and inclusion. Courses are designed to build capability around cultural diversity and inclusion whilst the Cultural Atlas provides detailed, useful and practical culture specific information about a range of cultures. Why was the program developed? In response to the Premier s Memorandum (M ) on Principals of Multiculturalism as well as market demand, given Australia s changing population with 28% of all residents being born in another country and nearly 1 in 2 residents having at least 1 parent born elsewhere. To promote social cohesion through fostering a better understanding of diverse cultures. To better service diverse communities within Australia by providing relevant training and information to government and service based organisations. To create competitive advantage for Australian organisations operating in an increasingly diverse local & global market. Why should organisations adopt the program? The CCP is a cost effective way to improve service delivery through training large number of employees. It is an opportunity to move away from the trickle down approach to diversity and inclusion training, and to be able to track participation and report on numbers trained. The program provides a sound platform from which further diversity training and other activities will be more effective. What is the Cultural Atlas? The Cultural Atlas <theculturalatlas.org> is a large scale value add online resource providing information about a range of cultures in Australia, including: Demographic Statistics Core Concepts Greetings Religion Do s and Do not s Etiquette Communication Business Culture. What topics are covered in the first course? The business case for investing in diversity Practical cultural competence Cross cultural communication Cultural adaptation Cultural differences and similarities Unconscious bias and stereotyping Australian cultural diversity and values. How is it delivered? Delivered Via App or Web (anytime, anywhere, any device) Can be integrated into your existing learning management systems. What is in the program? Content is practical, engaging, fast paced, informative and interactive Uses over 70 short films and activities Real people telling real stories Animations Thought provoking and fun activities Further reading and information. More topics are in development.
