1 PLTW Professional Development Getting Ready for the Core Training Season
2 At Project Lead The Way (PLTW), our mission empowering students to thrive in an evolving world drives our actions. One of the most important ways we can transform students lives is to support the work of the teachers who facilitate their learning. Through a challenging training curriculum, the expert guidance of Master Teachers, and the support of a professional community of educators, PLTW has transformed traditional instruction. We create learning-centered classrooms in which teachers are facilitators of the problem-solving process and guide outcomes by establishing an environment conducive to inquiry, creativity, and deeper learning. Our approach to professional development prepares educators to lead the engaging PLTW experience in their classrooms and provides the continuing support they need to be successful. Teachers begin their PLTW Professional Development experience by completing prerequisite courses that focus on an introduction to PLTW and essential foundational knowledge. Then, through our Core Training experience delivered in person and online teachers are empowered to develop the skills and tools they need to inspire students. Following Core Training, PLTW teachers have access to ongoing learning opportunities that provide them with the resources they need to continue growing and thriving. Engaging in In-Depth Learning PLTW Core Training immerses teachers in a hands-on, collaborative learning environment that challenges them to look at their classrooms in a new way. Teachers take on the role of a student, engage in in-depth exploration of PLTW coursework, and gain invaluable experience to take back to their classrooms. Core Training helps teachers build skills and confidence around activity-, project-, and problem-based (APB) learning; prepares educators to become facilitators and coaches; and empowers them to bring learning to life through their PLTW program. We offer flexible delivery options for Core Training, including in-person and Online Core Training offerings, to accommodate teachers needs and preferences. In-Person Core Training Experience The in-person Core Training experience includes full immersion in course content for up to two weeks, with duration varying by course. PLTW Launch Classroom and Lead Teachers attend a two-day inperson training; PLTW Gateway teachers participate in a three-day or five-day training, depending on the course; and PLTW high school teachers spend two weeks immersed in our in-person Core Training. Online Core Training Experience Online Core Training offers a job-embedded experience in which teachers virtually interact with one another in real time, use the experiences in their classroom as a springboard for learning, and apply what they learn the very same day or next week in their classrooms. The duration of Online Core Training varies from 10 to 16 weeks, depending on the course. Throughout the training, teachers can expect to spend two hours each week in a live online meeting collaborating with peers and should also anticipate engaging with coursework or related tasks for up to three hours per week. 3 Exciting Updates for Earn Continuing Education Units PLTW is proud to be an Accredited Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). This designation certifies that PLTW complies with the ANSI/IACET Standard, which is recognized internationally as a standard of excellence in instructional practices. All teachers who successfully complete their PLTW Core Training will be awarded with IACET CEUs. IACET CEUs are recognized by a wide range of organizations, allowing teachers to put them toward license or certification renewal. However, teachers must confirm with their school/district administrator, state department of education, or other relevant organization if IACET CEUs qualify as recognized CEUs based on specific state or local requirements. Industry Partners to Serve as Training Sites To further enrich the training experience, PLTW takes teachers beyond the classroom by providing them with unique opportunities to engage with in-demand careers and industries. These opportunities help teachers more deeply see the industry connections to our course content. This year, we re excited to announce the following industry training sites: FedEx and Cerner. We re pleased to offer Core Training this summer for the Computer Science for Innovators and Makers course at the global headquarters of FedEx, a leader in connecting people with goods, services and ideas to create opportunities and improve lives, located in Memphis, Tennessee. We re also pleased to offer Core Training for our new Cybersecurity beta course at the North American headquarters of Cerner, a leading provider of health information and electronic health record technologies, located in North Kansas City, Missouri. PLTW s new Cybersecurity course in beta this fall provides students with a broad exposure to the many aspects of digital and information security, while encouraging socially responsible choices and ethical behavior. Participation in the Cybersecurity beta is by invitation only. Please contact the PLTW Solution Center if you have questions. Introducing New Training Options for Computer Science Essentials and Medical Detectives As demand for PLTW programs increases, we continue to add flexible training options to fit teachers needs and preferences. This year, we re introducing in-person Core Training for Computer Science Essentials and Online Core Training for Medical Detectives. Teachers will now be able to select from a variety of Core Training options for both Computer Science Essentials and Medical Detectives. PLTW Launch Lead Teacher Training Updates After introducing PLTW Classroom Teacher Training last year, we ve updated our PLTW Lead Teacher Training to better reflect the focus of the train-the-trainer experience and the time commitment required by teachers. The in-person PLTW Launch Lead Teacher Training experience will now consist of two days, instead of three, during which teachers become instructional leaders and program champions in order to train and support PLTW Launch Classroom Teachers. In addition, we re introducing Online Core Training for PLTW Launch Lead Teachers. This training option, which consists of five biweekly virtual meetings, provides additional flexibility, while also offering more opportunities for PLTW Classroom Teachers to advance their career in educational leadership by becoming a PLTW Lead Teacher, gaining the skills and tools they need to facilitate training at their school or district. This document is meant to serve as a tool to aid in your planning. The 2018 schedule is subject to change; check mypltw in early April for updates and to register. Page 3
