I would like to thank Past President Chris Jahnke for his many years of service to the chapter, and for his special attention to the development of our operational policies and procedures. The policies and procedures that were drafted will definitely help current and future board members with planning chapter events and training. I am pleased to announce that this year s Fall Training Conference is being held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island September 4 6, Our top notch Curriculum Committee is working very hard to develop some quality training for all of us to take advantage of this fall on the island. You don t want to miss this training opportunity, or this venue so watch our website The Chapter s Spring Luncheon this year will be held at the Burton Manor Banquet and Conference Center located at Schoolcraft in Livonia, Michigan. We were fortunate to secure our newly elected Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel as our guest speaker. You can register for this event now on our website. The Chapter s Fall Luncheon will be at the Polish Century Club in Sterling Heights, Michigan on November 1, The speaker will be announced later this year. Our annual golf outing this year is on June 7, 2019 at Mystic Creek Golf Club located in Milford, Michigan. The proceeds go towards the College Scholarship fund. This event is a great day for our members and friends to enjoy some camaraderie and hopefully some good weather. Another available training opportunity sponsored by the FBI and the FBINAA Michigan Chapter is the Great Lakes Violent Crime Seminar scheduled for April 23rd 26th, 2019 held at the Wayne County Community College District- Taylor Campus. It has been a couple years since this class was last held, so you and your staff don t want to miss it. I have this class posted on our website along with a registration form. Lastly, I want to personally thank the Executive Board and the Curriculum Committee for all their commitment & extra duties they perform throughout the year making our Chapter a success. Each individual has hit the ground running & our event planning is well on its way. I hope to see you all this year at our events. In closing, I would like to quote a fictional TV character that really nailed an ending, Let s be careful out there. Sgt Phil Esterhaus

4 Youth Leadership Program by Gregory M. Laurain The Youth Leadership Program is offered to qualified male and female students who have demonstrated above average academic standards (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale), as well as good citizenship. Students have the opportunity to participate in an eight-day program of leadership development at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. This exciting program is offered through the cooperation of the FBI, and individual participants are selected and sponsored by the various state chapters of the FBINAA who will pay transportation and student sponsorship fees. Participants will also be included from our sister organizations, including LEEDA, NEIA, and the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI. Further, the counselors and instructional staff for the program will consist of National Academy graduates who are members of the FBINAA and select FBI Special Agent personnel. Guest lecturers in various professional disciplines will also address the students. Although the program is not limited to young persons interested in a future career in law enforcement, interested candidates should possess a desire to gain knowledge of the American system of criminal justice, police organization and function, criminal law, the structure and operation of our criminal courts, as well as leadership skills and personal development. In the past, participants in the YLP from Michigan have had wonderful experiences during their participation in the program. Some have gone on to successful college careers including attending the United States Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Every year, the student from Michigan attends the chapters fall luncheon and gives a presentation on their experience at the YLP. An interview panel comprised of members from our Chapter s Executive Board and/or Curriculum Committee will interview all applicants. Our Chapter will then submit our selection to the FBINAA Executive Office before April 12, This year s session of the Youth Leadership Program begins June 20, 2019 and will conclude on June 28, 2019.
