2 What is Horizons? Horizons 2013 Camp for Youth 4th 8th grade June 4-8 completed grades 4-8 Camp arrival 2:00 3:00 pm Camp departure 10:00 11:00 am Early registration, March 1 May 20 $275 Late registration, May $289 care services, facility and programming fees for the 4 night, 5 day event. Registrations accepted on a first come first served basis until the camp is filled. Youth are assigned to dormitories with other youth from their county; youth may request a dorm roommate during the registration process. $25 non-refundable deposit through May 20 All payments must be received by May 28. Canceled registrations result in Youth Camps & Programs Horizons is a camp featuring six different 4-H project learning programs. Each participant will select from one of the six programs to be offered. This year s projects include: Robotics: This science based program will provide youth with activities in constructing a robot, programming a robot and how to use sensors in robots. It will also include activities using sound for robot response and learning about the robot challenge contest. If you have a keen interest in science and technology this is the project for you. Water Science Fun: This project will explore current water issues and how it impacts our daily lives. It will also include a lot of hands-on water games and fun! If you like to get wet and learn more about water this is the project for you. Recreational Leadership: Participants will learn to be creative and thinking outside the box will be the focus of this project area. Youth will experience leadership styles and techniques. The program will enhance their communication and public speaking skills. They will also practice their leadership skills by facilitating and leading activities. Sport Fishing: Participants will have the opportunity to become certified youth anglers from the Texas Parks & Wildlife anglers program. Youth will also get hands on experience in lure making, casting and tying knots. They will also learn how to fish, seasonal fishing patterns, water conditions, water ph, water oxygen, technology, fishing regulations, competition, water safety and much more. Dog Project: This session is for youth interested in working with man s best friend. Sessions will include obedience training, agility workshop, dog care and picking the right dog for you. It will include hands-on demonstrations with dogs in fly ball, Frisbee, freestyle and agility. Others activities will include presentations from professional dog handlers, a dog groomer, veterinarian and humane society professionals. Lamb/Goat Project: This session is dedicated to teaching students the fundamentals of the lamb and goat project. The session will teach 4-H members the basics of feeding, nutrition, health, facilities, selection, and showmanship. This project will enhance the skills of both beginners and experienced 4-H youth. Horizon s Camp will also include many of the fun activities you have come to enjoy at the 4-H Center, such as dancing, swimming and lots more. More than just camping, we strive to provide opportunities for young people to: Understand self and others. Live and work with a small group of peers, cooperatively making decisions that affect the group. Experience adventure and challenge not usually found in daily home life.
