2 Message from the Fire Chief It is my pleasure to present the Spring Lake Fire Department 2015 Annual Report. Within this report you will find interes ng facts, response sta s cs and division reports based on the 2015 calendar year. This year has brought a department first and an exci ng project to frui on. Looking for the opportunity to acknowledge the great men and women who make up our department, we established a program for the first me to have a Firefighter of the Year Award. This award is voted on by the en re department but only firefighters, not ranking officers, are eligible. The award is sponsored by O awa County Commissioner Roger Bergman and an anonymous donor has been gracious to purchase the actual award. This year s inaugural award went to Dave Shaw. Dave has been on the Spring Lake Fire Department for 16 years. Along with being a firefighter, he is a Basic EMT and on the Dive Team. Dave helps with the O awa County Fire Academy and is a mentor to new firefighters on our department. Dave is married to Danelle and they have (3) boys: Bryant (16 yrs.), Braden (13 yrs.) and Jackson (9 yrs.). Dave works full- me for Mo on Dynamics in Fruitport and has been with them for 5 years. An exci ng highlight this year was the approval to build a new fire sta on. This sta on will be located at the northeast corner of Savidge Street and N. Fruitport Road, right next to Burger King. This sta on will be our new Sta on #1 and will allow us to consolidate from three to two fire sta ons. The new sta on will not only allow us to improve our opera ons, it will bring some long term financial savings as we will be able to eliminate some future capital costs with equipment. 2

6 Equipment and Maintenance Truck Fleet In 2014 we reported that we started to maintain our fleet with a new vendor, B&B Truck from Comstock Park. We con nued this program with them in We also con nued to collaborate with Grand Haven and Crockery Townships by combining the truck maintenance program and pump tes ng, saving all departments money on repairs. B&B has been very reliable, giving us prompt maintenance and emergency service to keep our fleet up and running. This year we wrote bid specifica ons and bid out a new pumper to replace The bid was awarded to a Michigan Company, Spencer Manufacturing in South Haven, MI, with a Spartan Chassis from Charlo e, MI. This truck will come with new equipment and tools to replace the old and out dated items. We expect delivery some me in the fall of , 1722 con nue to give us the most repair issues and cost. The electrical and mechanical items con nue to show their age, needing more a en on and repair to keep them going. The drivetrain, pumps and engine are in good shape and con nue to perform as expected was quite problem free this year as the number of runs were low. The PTO generator has been the biggest problem. We will con nue to focus our repairs on this truck, keeping in mind that we are looking to replace it with a new 1722 combo rescue pumper in few years. 1770, 1772, 1773 have had very few problems. We con nue to do normal rou ne maintenance and some minor repairs has been burning a quart or two of oil between oil changes, which seems to be a common problem with that model of engine has limited use as we use it for a brush truck only. It should last for several more years. Turnout Gear We con nue to replace our gear on a schedule of about 5 sets per year. We have added several new members, raising our gear purchases this year. We are s ll using the Muskegon County specifica ons and it has been working great for our firefighters. SCBA We are not happy with the performance and maintenance costs of our current SCBA, and have pushed up the purchase of new units on the priority list. We have a joint FEMA request with Ferrysburg Fire Department to purchase new packs, and have add a capital budget line to fund them. If we are unsuccessful in obtaining the grant, we will need to replace them in
