1 PADRE ISLES PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION April 2009 Annual Meeting Volume 6, Issue 2 Inside this issue: The meeting was called to order at 10:15 a.m. by Nancy Tressa, president. There were 97 members and guests in attendance. Among guests were City officials Angel Escobar, Gus Gonzales, Pete Anaya, County Commissioner Chuck Cazalos, Police and Crime Prevention representatives, and Coast Guard Auxiliary members. Architectural Control Committee Homeowners Advisory Committee Beautification Members & Guests Nominations from the floor and call for ballots was made by Nancy Tressa. Maybeth Christensen presented the financial reports. Natalie Klostermann, CPA, verified a quorum was present and reported there were six (6) write-in votes. Ms. Klosterman presented the audited financial statements, and announced the newly elected board members Nancy Tressa, Bob Maupin, and Jeff Carlson. A slide presentation of accomplishments, current, and future projects was shown. The Police representatives informed attendees of actions they have been taking regarding crime prevention and Spring Break plans. City officials presented four concepts of the new water tower logo. A quick show of hands indicated Concept 1-A was preferred by those attending. Russ Miget spoke about the water quality of our canals. Members were asked to submit questions. Several questions were answered, and the remaining questions will be answered by letter, published in our local Moon newspaper and published in future newsletters. 2 Architectural Control Committee Please remember to submit any building project for ACC approval before applying for your City permits. Procedure: Obtain guidelines and forms from POA office. Submit ACC application forms with the required plans/documents and fees to POA office. After ACC review, you will be notified your project has been approved and an ACC permit will be issued for posting at the project site. Submit the necessary forms at City of Corpus Christi Developmental Services for complying with City regulations, obtain City approval and permit, and post the City permit at the project site before any work is started. Be sure to comply with City ordinances. Homeowners Advisory Committee Litter Critter Last Saturday of month 9:00 a.m. POA Office Parking Lot Volunteers available on Saturday to help you unload your unwanted treasures. Beautification Trust by John White Thanks to all of our Island residents who have given and continue to give of their time and money to help make our Island a more beautiful place. We have been given a very generous donation of 3,000 palm trees to be used in our parks city wide, with 500 palm trees designated for use on our Island. Many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Blackman for their donation and their kindness and generosity to our Island and Corpus Christi. Page 2

3 Bulkheads and Boat Ramps Your POA is progressing with the repair of bulkhead caps repairs have been completed on Beaufort Court and are being completed on Mutiny Court. The next canal section will be Bowsprit. The cost has increased from $48 to $71 per linear foot. We are also performing asphalt repairs on the boat ramps. Please remember to be careful when using the boat ramps so we can alleviate some of the wear-andtear on the asphalt. Also remember, in order to use the boat ramp, you need to have the blue POA vehicle sticker and the 2009 boat trailer sticker. The vehicle sticker is $5.00 and the boat trailer sticker is $ The vehicle sticker does not expire; the boat trailer sticker expires yearly. ATTENTION: VACANT LOT OWNERS Due to City enforcement of Ordinance Section 32-1, it is suggested vacant lots be posted with a permanently fixed sign stating: NO TRESPASSING NO PARKING VIOLATORS TOWED AT OWNER S EXPENSE Windstorm Legislation The legislature is considering a restructure of the Windstorm Insurance program in Texas. Several bills have been introduced with various ideas. The wrong law could stop development, make insurance extremely expensive, cause property values to drop, and cause taxes to go up. The proposed change in windstorm insurance greatly affects the coastal counties of Texas. The Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce is monitoring all proposals. HB 911 and SB 14 are of concern as of this writing. Up to date information regarding this legislation can be made by contacting the C h a m b e r o f C o m m e r c e a t or Our Representative Todd Hunter, may be ed at: todd.hunter@house.state.tx.us We simply cannot afford to pay the bulk of the cost of the windstorm coverage for the entire State of Texas. FYI Coast Guard Auxiliary Article by Duke Wm. Stevens, Flotilla 7-11 D8CR Many of you have seen the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary boats on the water, but are probably uncertain as to who we are and what services we perform. The U.S. Coast guard is the only branch of the Armed Forces with a volunteer contingent...the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Auxiliary operates under the authority of the Secretary of Homeland Security and under orders from the Commandant of the U. S. Coast Guard. Padre Isles and surrounding areas falls into the Area of Responsibility for Flotilla 7-11, most of whom are your neighbors and members of the POA. The Auxiliary provides many services to/ for the Coast Guard and the general boating public. The primary focus is boating safety and boater education. There is a nominal fee for the safety classes, but the vessel safety checks are done as a courtesy for the boating public. No Wake signs are available from the Auxiliary for a $75.00 donation. 4 From your Board Dear Friends and Neighbors, As spring blows over our Island homes, I hope you are all enjoying the new season. I want to thank all of you who came out on a blustery Saturday to attend our Annual Meeting. It was a busy morning, and I feel we are off to a productive start with a solid budget and goals for the coming year. One of the items addressed is the fact we all are in agreement we want to continue to improve the look of our neighborhoods. Along with our Homeowners Advisory Committee and the Island s Beautification Trust, we hope to move together in this avenue. Be on the lookout for more palm trees and less tall grass on vacant lots and canal ends. I am encouraging those of you who like to organize events to become more involved with the neighbors on your block in an effort to do some spring-cleaning and sprucing up of our curbing areas. You may also want to join together to help one another to clean up yards that may need some extra attention. It s always neighborly to assist some of our older residents in their endeavors in their yards. Try to involve the renters on your block in your clean-up parties. Many of our renters are Navy student pilots who are busy studying but probably would lend young hands to a neighborhood clean up and would enjoy being included in a neighborhood-gettogether. If you want to become more involved in our efforts, all of our committees could use new members with the time to spend in efforts to improve the quality of life here in Padre Isles. Again, thanks to all of you for your individual efforts, ideas and support. Continue to enjoy our Island as spring flowers around us. Nancy Tressa, President Padre Isles POA 2009 POA assessments were due April 1; late fees will now be charged. Neighborhood Checklist Lots must be maintained; bushes and shrubs should be trimmed. Curbs, gutters and street are also to be maintained. Garbage container is to be placed on the street the morning of pickup and removed from street that evening. Bright lights on docks should be pointed down and not at homes across the canal. properly. (Be mindful of your neighbor s yard.) Absolutely nothing is allowed to be washed or dumped into the canals...this includes grass clippings, palm fronds, animal waste, and fish remains. Vacant lots are not to be used for dumping plant clippings, construction debris, parking or storing boat trailers or any other vehicles. Brush and/or bulky items are to be placed on your property only when brush and/or bulky item pickups are scheduled. Barking dogs are a nuisance. Dogs must be on lease or behind a fence. Dog excrement must not be swept into the canal. Please pick up excrement and discard Trailers parked on the street must be hooked up to a vehicle. Please park with consideration for your neighbor. Children (13-17) can obtain their TPW boating operator s permit. Cost is $45.00 and includes materials, classroom instruction, and hands on demonstrations.
