The campaign end date is 12 January Our January 9th Luncheon Our speaker is our new President, Steve Westover. Steve is a retired Navy Captain and might share some sea stories. His first "President's Corner: It is a great honor for me to begin serving as the President of the Bremerton Olympic Council of the Navy League. I would like to thank the council membership for their vote of affirmation for me and the other council officers. As a relative newbe within the Navy League organization, I look forward to getting to better know our members and forging new relationships with our community. I would like to thank Alan Beam for making this transition so smooth and for all of the hard work that he has put in as President. He has led this council with distinction. Alan will continue on as the Communications Director for our award winning website. Volunteers are the life blood of our council, and I encourage everyone to get involved. There are exciting new projects on the horizon for the council to step forward and lead. The USS Bremerton will be decommissioning in the near future. As one of our adopted units, we will look to ways to memorialize her service to the nation. Our Jan tour will be to San Diego to visit Naval and Marine Corps installations at NAS North Island and MCAS Miramar and a tour of my old home for two years, the USS Midway. At the end of the month, on Jan 26, we will hold our installation dinner for the new officers and board members. Capt. Alan Schrader, CO of NAVBASE Kitsap will be the guest speaker.
Marine Corps Security Force Battalion Bangor Christmas Party The Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, Bangor held a Children s Christmas Party on Dec 3. The party featured a visit from Santa Claus and a reading of Polar Express by LtCol Tinson. Phyllis Diehl, Barbara Hanson Mail, and Helen Miller were among the Navy League attendees helping Santa distribute gifts, many of which were provided by Navy League. About 50 children attended, an amazingly a huge turn out. Colonel and Mrs Tinson, Erin and Kelly Tammen (pictured above), SGT MAJ Caputo, Jennifer Wiess, Gunnery Sergeant Todd, Meaghan Bourgeois and Chris Larson (as Santa) to mention only a few. Barb, Phyllis, Helen, Erin, and Kelly provided tons of gifts which were very well received. Erin and Kelly made sure that the children each received an appropriate present. The two young ladies did a super job and were very popular with the children. 2
US Coast Guard Christmas Party Santa s Polar Bear Express landed in Silverdale by mistake and left gifts for the Port Angeles Coast Guard Station s children there. The elves and Santa were very busy making toys for other children and asked Helen Miller, Barbara Hanson Mail, Phyllis Diehl to deliver them to before Christmas. Santa arrived in a Coast Guard helicopter to deliver the presents. 3
December Luncheon One of the great and most heartwarming things that our Navy League Council does is support local commands in recognizing their exceptional performers, Officer and Enlisted, Navy, Marine Corps and Coastguard. We do that at each of our monthly Luncheons and often at other functions as well. The military organizations identify the winners. We provide an statue and host the presentations. At this month's luncheon we recognized four outstanding Navy top performers from Naval Base Kitsap. Capt Alan Schrader, Commanding Officer, Naval Base Kitsap and our President, Alan Beam, presented the awards. The award winners, all "Sailors of the Year" in their catagory, were: MA1 (SW/AW) Jennifer Aguilar MA2 Hunter Hespen MA2 Shane McClelland MA3 Kaitlyn Sheremeta After the award presentations, CAPT Schrader asked for a few moments for comments. He very graciously thanked Navy League for all we do, from hosting award luncheons, to our Welcome receptions for new ships, to holiday events for Service families and so much more. It was clearly from his heart and very much appreciated. 4
December Luncheon In addition to awards presentations, Will Lent talked about the events of Pearl Harbor. If you have not heard him talk about Naval History, you have been missing a real treat. The luncheon also served as our annual meeting to review our financials and select our 2018 Officers. By a unanimous vote the following slate was approved: President - Steve Westover Vice President - David Ellingson Second Vice President - Byron Faber Treasurer - Larry Tellinghusein Secretary - Joe Hulsey JAG - Robert Battin Past President - Alan Beam National Director - Larry Salter Installation Dinner We are going to continue a tradition of celebrating our successes of the year and the installation of new Officers and Board of Directors at an Installation Dinner. We will hold this dinner Friday January at the Silverdale Beach Hotel. There will be a social hour at 5 PM with Dinner starting at 6 PM. Our Guest Speaker will be Capt Alan Schrader, Commanding Officer Naval Base Kitsap. The dinner will be both Roast Beef and Salmon Filet. The cost will be $45/person. Sign up by contacting bremertonnavyleague@gmail.com or calling USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) Returns to Bremerton Report from Helen Miller who attended the arrival: The USS NIMITZ CVN-68, returned from deployment December 10th. She was greeted by Captain Alan Schrader, Commanding Officer of Naval Base Kitsap but more importantly by a host of family and friends. It was a cold but beautifully sunny day for this magnificent warship to come home. There way a quiet hush over the waterfront as families of crew members, many of whom had never seen the Aircraft Carrier before, were excited and apprehensive about seeing their loved ones after a long absence. Would many small children recognize daddy? Many children made a made dash for any uniform coming of the ship and grabbed who they thought was daddy round the knees. It all got straightened out in the end. It was heartwarming to witness such joy, happiness and patriotism. 5
USS Jacksonville Crew Reception On December 12, our Navy League hosted a Crew reception at the Samuel Adams Brewhouse for the Jacksonville (SSN-699) Crew. USS Jacksonville arrived at NBK Bremerton after completing the final voyage of her 36 year career. Commissioned May 16, 1981, Jacksonville is named after the largest and most populous city in Florida, and is the first ship to bear the name. The Jacksonville's crest features a modified version of the city's seal with Andrew Jackson on a horse in front of the rising sun, with a submarine and the hull number SSN 699 below. The submarine's nickname, "The Bold One," is a play off the city's longtime slogan of "The Bold New City of the South." Under the command of Cmdr. Steven Faulk, Jacksonville will begin preparation for Decommissioning in Initially homeported in Norfolk VA Jacksonville conducted 2 around the world deployments to the Indian Ocean, 3 Mediterranean Deployments, 2 Northern Atlantic Deployments and 1 South Atlantic Deployment. In April 2009 Jacksonville changed homeport to Pearl Harbor. While in the Pacific Fleet Jacksonville conducted 2 deployments to the Western Pacific and 2 Indian Ocean Deployments. Celebration of the Emperor's Birthday Our Navy League Council was well represented at a Reception to celebrate the birthday of his Majesty the Emperor of Japan's Birthday at the Japanese Residence in Seattle. Helen Miller attended as she has for several years, She said "it is an honour and a privilege to be invited," the Guest speaker was Admiral Gary Mayes representing the US Navy and America. He was extremely well received by the local Japanese community because of his knowledge of their culture and customs, He is truly an Officer and a Gentleman and was able to cement Japanese American friendship and relationships both social and business, so necessary in these times. Admiral Mayes extended the hand of friendship to the recently arrived new Consul General and was very well received by the Consul General of Japan his Excellency and Mrs Yoichiro Yamada. 6
