2 President's Corner We are just coming off a fantastic event supporting the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair at the first of the month. Helen Miller did a super job in recruiting 32 NL Judges. In addition to judging for the fair we judged for the Office of Naval Research and our seven awards in Naval Science. There were over 600 students presenting, and their presentations were amazing! If you get a chance next year please come, I know you will have a great time! May is a very busy month for us supporting the Bremerton Armed Forces Festival. The exact details are laid out in the Newsletter and Website. Saturday May 6 is the military Culinary Arts Competition at Olympic College. What started out as a Chili Cook-off as developed into a contest that draws cooks from all over the region. Saturday May 20 is a full day starting with breakfast on 4 th street at 7 AM, Parade at 10 AM, Heroes BBQ lunch on Pacific at 11 AM, and the Navy League Gala at the Admiral theater at 6PM. The Parade Grand Marshall and Gala Guest speaker is VADM Nora Tyson, Commander Third Fleet. We are actively seeking Navy League members to ride the Safe Boat in the Parade. The month is capped by the Memorial Day Ceremony on the USS Turner Joy at 10 AM on Monday May 29. The Featured Speaker is CAPT Douglas Munz, Commanding Officer Navy Operational Support Center Kitsap. Come out and have some fun! I am actively seeking a volunteer photographer and a volunteer fundraiser chairman to enable some fun events our membership committee is planning. 2 Like us on Facebook: Navy League of the United States Bremerton - Olympic Peninsula Council

3 April 11 Luncheon and Meeting Mr John Hanson President, Bremerton Historic Ship Association Our presenter, Mr. John Hanson, is an unpaid volunteer serving in his 10th year as President of the Bremerton Historic Ship Association. The luncheon presentation captured and held the attention of the audience as Mr. Hanson discussed the work leading up to the Dry Dock work on the USS Turner Joy (DD-951), including some funny anecdotes about how some of the funding was raised. He discussed the efforts required before the USS Turner Joy could depart the Bremerton Waterfront, the transit to Lake Union through the Ballard Locks, the work done while she was in the Dry Dock, and the return transit. Each phase presented unique challenges. The transit back to the Bremerton was less dramatic. It had been proven that the Ballard Locks could accommodate the USS Turner Joy and tugs and the crews had experience transiting. While all of the photos and videos John showed were exceptional, photos and videos of the return were majestic in that the transit took place on a beautiful Seattle day. Photographs of the newly painted USS Turner Joy with Mount Rainier and Washington State Ferries in the background were spectacular. Transits to and from the Lake Union Dry Dock were covered by all the local TV stations. Coverage included videos taken from all three local news helicopters. Additionally, a great video of the transit is available on You Tube at v=ludjfaqeau0. Once there you can view other USS Turner Joy videos. Also featured at the luncheon was a display by one of the Washington State Science Fair winners (see the article about the Science Fair in this Newsletter). Lauren, an 8th grader from Our Lady of the Sea Catholic School, brought a display and discussed her work on "Electrolysis of Sacrificial Anodes." It was inspiring. Lauren was accompanied by her Mother and Grandmother, both US Navy veterans. Her father is on active duty. Lauren shared that she aspires to be a Navy pilot like both of her parents. 4
