3 About Us The Navy League is unique among military-oriented associations in that it is a civilian organization dedicated to the education of our citizens, including elected officials, and the support of the men and women of the sea services and their families. To this end, the Orange County Council works closely with Navy, Marine and Coast Guard units nearby. The OC Council supports active duty military personnel through adoption of ships, installations and units, award programs, financial support and service men and women recognition programs. Our Mission To continue to support through non-partisan efforts our country s Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, to support youth programs such as Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Junior ROTC and Young Marines that expose young people to the values of our Sea Services, and to educate the public regarding the national security and humanitarian efforts provided by our Sea Services. This is a mission MORE VITAL NOW than at anytime in recent history! Our sea services are in a poor state of readiness with ships, planes, and equipment that are in need of spare parts and replacements! Your help is critical!

4 Our Challenge Coin The John Wayne Connection One of Orange County s most famous residents, John Wayne, had a deep love of America. Wayne, who lived in Newport Beach, California, rose beyond the typical recognition for a famous actor to that of an enduring icon, symbolizing and communicating American values and ideals. Much like the Orange County Navy League, John Wayne was a civilian who served to support our Nation s military. He was involved with the USO from WWII through Vietnam. Wayne s status as an iconic American was formally recognized by the U.S. government in the form of the two highest civilian decorations. On May 26, 1979, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, then, on June 9, 1980 Wayne was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter. And in 1998, he was awarded the Naval Heritage Award by the US Navy Memorial Foundation for his support of the Navy and Military during his film career. John Wayne s image on our Council Challenge Coin is a replica of sculptor Robert Summers bronze statue: The Duke. Commissioned in 1979, and currently located at the Orange County, John Wayne Airport, the statue is a commemoration of the late actor as a true American patriot. John Wayne embodied the Navy League motto: Citizens in Support of Our Sea Services

Certificates, Cash Stipends, Letters For Personnel Jacket Adoption: COMSUBRON 11 Navy Command Submarine Squadron ELEVEN is a squadron of five fast attack nuclear submarines based in San Diego. It includes the floating dry-dock, Arco, and Undersea Rescue Command. The squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support for all units. Submarine Squadron 11 is located on Naval Base Point Loma, Califonia. Adoption: Naval Base Point Loma Naval Base Point Loma consists of seven facilities: Submarine Base, Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command (previously Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Command), Fleet Combat Training Center Pacific, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), SPAWAR Systems Center, the Fleet Intelligence Command Pacific and Naval Consolidated Brig, Miramar. These close-knit commands form a diverse and highly technical hub of naval activity. The on base population is around 22,000 Navy and civilian personnel.

7 With Quarterly and Yearly Awards Adoption: 3RD Marine Air Wing The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3 rd MAW) is the major west coast aviation unit of the United States Come Marine Meet Corps. It is headquartered Jim Bras OCNL s at Marine Corps Air Station Rep! Miramar, California and provides the aviation combat element for I Marine Expeditionary Force. The wing is made up of a headquarters squadron, four flying groups, an aviation command and control group and an aviation engineering group. 3 rd MAW has many assets, including these aircraft: F/A-18 Hornet F-35B Lightning II AV-8B Harrier II, KC-130 Super Hurcules, AH-1W Super Cobra, AH-1Z Viper, UH-1Y Venom, CH-53E Super Stallion, MV-22B Osprey, RQ-7 Shadow, and Scan Eagle. Orange County Navy League visits the 3 rd MAW every quarter to present Marine of the Quarter, Sailor of the Quarter, as well as year-end awards. You are welcome to join us!

8 We Directly Support Via Adoptions Adoption: MCAS Miramar Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is home to the 3 rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Miramar is home to over 15,000 service members and their families, comprised of every branch of our military service. The air station is best known as the former location of the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (NFWS), its TOPGUN training program and the movie of the same name. During the heyday of TOPGUN at NAS Miramar, the station was nicknamed Fightertown USA. Orange County Navy League visits MCAS Miramar every quarter to present Marine of the Quarter, Sailor of the Quarter, as well as year-end awards. You are welcome to join us! We Support Navy JROTC & Sea Cadet Units Learning the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. We support Santa Ana, Orange, and Troy High Schools. The Teddy Roosevelt Youth Medal is given annually to one outstanding cadet at each command.

9 With Quarterly and Yearly Awards Adoption: Naval Assault Craft Unit 5 ACU 5 is the United States Navy s Pacific operating unit for the Landing Craft No Beach Out of Reach Air Cushion (LCAC). Headquartered at Camp Pendleton, its mission is transporting, ship-to-shore and across the beach, personnel, weapons, equipment, and cargo of the assault elements of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. ACU-5 has over 400 sailors, organized in five departments. A part of the United States Pacific Fleet, ACU-5 reports to Commander, Naval Beach Group 1, a part of Expeditionary Strike Group 3. As of April 2017, we are just beginning our relationship with ACU-5. We plan on visiting this unique command quarterly from here on out. Why not join us? 10 We Directly Support Via Adoptions Adoption: Center for Service Support The mission of CSS is to provide Sailors in the Naval Administration, Logistics and Media communities the necessary skills, knowledge and education to enhance lifelong learning and to support the Fleet s warfighting mission. Looking like a college campus, Center for Service Support (CSS) was established in February 2003 as part of the Naval Education and Training Command s (NETC) revolution in training initiative to streamline the business of delivering required training. In all, NETC established 15 learning centers, including the one in San Diego which our council supports! What is unique about this command is... FOOD! Really, really, good food, and so far, every time we ve presented awards, it has been in conjunction with a pot luck lunch that is truly to die for! (Think Thanksgiving dinner at grandma s house... on steroids!) So, if yummies and congratulating sailors on a job well done trips your trigger, come join us in San Diego every quarter! 12 Special Programs and Speakers A Salute To 27 Pearl Harbor Survivors 26 October 2016, Sponsored by Orange County Navy League Our signature event was the biggest Pearl Harbor Survivors reunion in Held at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach, almost one dozen survivors attended a special lunch to honor their service just before the 75 anniversary of the attack. The October 26th luncheon was made possible by the efforts of Council Director Sally Nockold, Council President John Gates and Council Judge Advocate Hon. Rick Aguirre. It included over 300 guests from the Orange County community, Members of Congress, the Orange County Board of Supervisors and all the major media outlets.

13 Fundraising & Donations Armed Services YMCA Orange County Navy League supported the ASYMCA at Camp Pendleton by donating to the Poker Run for motorcycle enthusiasts and becoming a Hole Sponsor at the ASYMCA s golf tournament. Tailhook Educational Foundation Navy League of Orange County affiliated and joined with TailHook association to raise money for Tailhook Educational Foundation, a worthy scholarship program.
