2 Commander s Message Cdr Rick Hibbs, SN Winterfest was a good time for all who joined in. But we got a surprise when a frozen/split water pipe at GYC thawed enough to add a scenic waterfall just inside the ladies room! It was fixed in time for the February meeting. Founder s Day Dinner was enjoyed by the smallish crowd from the three squadrons, Rochester, Red Jacket and Iroquois. The good news was that we did NOT have to face a snow storm on the way home! And therefore P/C Ken and Cheryl Mart did NOT have any trouble returning home! So much for the last couple of months. Now about March and April! By the time these electrons are received into your reading device, Spring Council will have been. The March meeting (Wed Mar 5 at GYC; 7:00pm) will feature introduction of as many of the new members as can attend. The Executive Board approved applications for 8 new members from GYC, including 6 that are now taking the Piloting course. Please come and welcome them! By now, it should be relatively common knowledge that our squadron was asked by D/C Judy Swanson to step in and host the District 6 Spring Conference (in Batavia) Friday March 28 to Saturday March 29th as the squadron from the Buffalo area was forced to withdraw. Though we were a little daunted at the idea, there is a huge amount of momentum and enthusiasm building for this event. We are going to use it to celebrate the end of Rochester s 75 th year! Hospitality room hostess Rita Parks and chief mixologist Kevin Parks are already making plenty of plans to make this a seriously fun event! They ll be assisted by Bridgett Arieno and her sous chef, Cdr Rick Hibbs. In addition to the hospitality room being open on Friday evening, we will be hosting the annual wine and cheese party on Saturday before dinner, and a birthday celebration after dinner, complete with a suitable birthday cake. Following dinner, we ll be entertained by Nightfall, including informal performances in the hospitality room later. There will be a Chinese auction (buy raffle tickets, and put as many as you want in a bid for some special goodie baskets) for various themed goodie baskets. Proceeds will help us cover our expenses. Pat Howell is chairing the registration activity, and will be receiving all meal reservations. Check previous flyer for the registration forms. Room forms and checks should be sent/delivered to Cdr Rick Hibbs, in order for you to save the sales tax required if you make individual room arrangements. You only have to March 7 th to make reservations through our squadron. The April meeting (2 Apr; GYC at 7:00pm) will feature speaker Mark Gregor(see Jack Howell s article for details). I hope you will all join me for a fun Commander s Breakfast, to be held at the Rochester Yacht Club, overlooking the Genesee River. We ll be on the 2 nd floor starting at 11:30 on Sunday April 13, with a beautiful view of the river going out to the lake. The cost for the breakfast buffet will be $18. Finally, I want to give you a heads up for the May 7 th meeting. It will be at the RYC, and will feature optional cash dinner and bar starting at 5:30, followed by a 7:00 meeting featuring P/D/C Paul Flagg offering a seminar on shipboard emergencies. We ll be joined by Iroquois and Red Jacket Squadrons. A lot going on, as we think about getting boats ready for launch as well! I sincerely hope to see ALL of you at each of these events!! 2

3 Executive Officer s Report P/C Linda Haas, P This year s annual Rochester Boat Show was quite successful for boat dealers and marinas, with reports of many boats purchased. P/C Jim Haas took the ABC boating class flyer prepared by Assistant SEO 1 st Lt Frank Potter, JN around the show and found Smith Boys, McMillan Marine and SouthPoint Marina eager to have the schedule of classes we are offering this spring, plus the information about the revision to NYS law for boaters. A copy of the flyer is included in this issue of the Chart. Members of the Rochester Sail and Power Squadron who manned our booth at the Boat Show at critical times during the 4 days of the show were Joan Halstead, Don Reaves, Michael and Carol Lamendola, Rick Hibbs, Marv and Candace Engle, Art and Marcia Cassidy, Frank Potter and Karen, Terry Macauley, Jim and Linda Haas, Ernest DiNatale, Tom and Barbara Nicholas, Jerry and Vanda Lighthouse, Jack and Pat Howell, and John Zingo. Without our loyal Squadron volunteers, we could not fulfill our USPS mission of attracting and educating the boating public. Your participation is indicative of a healthy Squadron. Collectively, we garnered two plus pages of signatures from people who want to be reminded of when our ABC classes start, more information about our ABC course and/or advanced grade courses, or information about membership. Cdr Rick Hibbs, Assistant SEO Frank Potter, and SEO Steve Heffron will be contacting these people as a follow-up to the Boat Show. A special thank you to Lt Bob Roth, P for transporting and setting up the booth, and later taking it apart and storing the booth and tubs of materials. Bob and I will be meeting to remove outdated materials in the 4 plastic tubs, and to determine how we can improve our presentation for next year. P/Lt C Vanda Whitehouse, P produced the sign-up sheets and helped recruit volunteers for manning the booth, an equally important task. And our Administrative Officer, Lt/C Jack Howell, S and his wife Lt Pat Howell, S put together a quiz and prize element that was essential to attracting people to our booth. Our RSPS is most fortunate to have Jack and Pat as active members in our Squadron. 4 Administrative Officer Lt/C Jack Howell Hi everyone, my wife Pat and I are relatively new members of the Squadron, and this is my 1 st experience with sharing a report in the Chart. I am working with the other members of the Bridge to become familiar with my duties. I ll share a few of the upcoming Squadron programs that are scheduled; March Meeting: We have not scheduled a Guest Speaker to allow time to recognize and provide a warm Squadron welcome to all our new members! We have had a great response to the Piloting Class Commander Rick Hibbs is leading, and as a result have 8 new members joining our organization. By the way, my wife Pat and I are students at this class, and we re all enjoying the opportunity to improve our boating skills and knowledge. It is also planned at this meeting for Squadron members to share their personal boating stories from the past season. So, reflect back to when you were enjoying your time on the water this past year, and perhaps think of a story or two to share with the group. A special thanks to Jim Haas for arranging our Guest Speakers for our Squadron Meetings. April Meeting: We have Mark Gregor, Manager of Environmental Quality for the City of Rochester as a guest speaker. Mark is also the manager of Development of the Port of Rochester. I m sure we all have a great interest in quality of our local environment, and the development of our Port. So, look forward to Mark s presentation and perhaps think ahead of time about some questions you might have about Mark s area of responsibility. Looking beyond April, Jim Hass has made arrangements for our May meeting, a joint meeting with Iroquois Squadron, planned to be held at the Rochester Yacht Club (RYC). At that meeting we ll have Mr. Paul Flagg as a Guest Speaker who will present a seminar on Emergencies on Board. Paul is Past Commander of Ithaca Sail and Power Squadron and District 6 Past Commander. Look forward to more information on this Seminar in the next issue of the Chart. Also, I understand arrangements are being made for our annual Squadron Picnic. Kevin and Rita Parks are working to arrange for our Squadron to hold the Picnic at the Irondequoit Bay Fish and Game Club. Hopefully that will work out, and we ll be able to hold the Picnic at the great location on the Bay. Jim is already putting together Programs and Speakers for our meeting next year! So, look forward to reading and hearing more about upcoming programs. By the way, if you have ideas about topics of interest you think the Group would like to hear about, please let Jim or I know. 4

5 MEMBERSHIP UPDATE P/Lt/C Marcia Cassidy, S In the words of George Harrison, it has been a long, cold winter but here comes the sun!! I am sure that everyone is anxious for spring and the upcoming boating season. The Rochester Sail and Power Squadron has many planned events to get everyone in the boating mood starting with our 05 March 2014 General Meeting 1900 hours at the Genesee Yacht Club. The theme is boating stories and hope everyone has a good boating story to share and maybe we can learn something from it! RSPS is also hosting the District 6 Conference 28 March through 30 March. It is being held at the Clarion Hotel in Batavia, New York. RSPS will be celebrating our 75th Anniversary and have some special things planned. The Commander's Breakfast is 13 April 2014 at the Rochester Yacht Club. Come and enjoy the great food and view! Details in this issue. 8 Spring Boating Courses 2014 "Five-Week America's Boating Course (ABC)" Seamanship and Safety Small Boat Handling Government Regulations Rules of the Road Aids to Navigation Boat Trailering Manners, customs and much more This informative course runs for 5 sessions, 7pm 9pm. The first four sessions are instructional and the fifth session is the exam. Course Fee payable at time of registration with the school of choice (see schools and dates below). This course is for power boaters, sail boaters and personal watercraft users. If you cruise, fish, water ski or just go joy riding, this course is for you. Completion of the course and passing the exam will also satisfy New York State law pertaining to Mandatory PWC Education Requirements for all ages, and will allow young boaters less than 18 years of age to operate a boat without adult supervision. Those who successfully complete this 5 session course are generally eligible for a 10-15% discount on their watercraft insurance policy. Passing the examination will also qualify you for free 6 month membership in the Rochester Sail and Power Squadron and the opportunity to take more advanced courses. Participants must be 18 years of age or older unless accompanied by an adult.
