Approximately 500 Soldiers assigned to the 4-118th Combined Arms Battalion conducted the training to prepare for the Army National Guard s exportable Combat Training Capability rotation next year in Idaho. Additionally, the following year, the 4-118th CAB will ramp up their training for a rotation at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California. First Lt. Josh Taylor, 4-118th CAB, Company D platoon leader, explained, the M1A1- SA Abrams sectional-level gunnery training consisted of two tank teams that navigate a range scenario at the same time, and the success of the mission largely depends on command and control by the section leader. Each team in an Abrams tank consists of a tank commander, loader, gunner, and driver and such as how well they rehearsed and the communication among the individual team members while navigating the scenario. Sectional gunnery is exciting because we get to work together in teams, said Taylor. It s actually more tactical and more oriented to what you train for and what you signed up for. Photo by CAPT. Chaplain spouses learn Army basics By JULIA SIMPKINS U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School When clerics join the Army there s a lot for them to learn about what religious support for Soldiers is about. When their spouses come along, they too have some major cultural adjustments to make. Course hosted a two-day Spouses Seminar April 12 and 13 at the Fort Jackson NCO Club. The 25 attendees listened to advice and asked questions of seasoned spouses of cadre members, and special guest speakers. Jill Solhjem s husband is the Deputy Chief of Army Chaplains, Chaplain (Brig. Gen.) Thomas Solhjem. They ve been an Army Family for 25 years. She gave the spouses a glimpse of what dealing with deployment is like. As the Gulf War was about to start, we were new to the Army, she said. We were just getting used to life as to leave Fort Bragg and none of us knew how big this was going to be. One night he came home and told me that he might have to leave. Two days later he got called to work and I didn t see him again for nine months. Jill told the group how important it is to make friends and form relationships early to establish support during uncertain times. Fort Bragg was a ghost town. Most of the units had deployed. My two best friends and I got together and discussed what we would do in the event that our husbands Chaplain (Col.) Jeff Hawkins, commandant, U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School, greets the group of spouses. didn t come home, she said. We didn t know what the future would hold. We talked and prayed through it. Eventually we left our husbands lives in God s hands. The group also learned about their roles at formal events. Marilynn Bailey from Army Community Service came to discuss military customs and courtesies and Army acronyms. lain assistants. Throughout the event, the spouses asked questions about where to get support, especially for National Guard and Army Reserve chaplains. Active duty spouses asked about the possibility of career opportunities despite their anticipated frequent moves. Speakers and subject matter experts answered every question and provided encouraging words. Since we began I ve pastored seven different churches as an Intentional Interim pastor. That s an opportunity I never would have had if she hadn t become a chaplain. Because I was an Intentional Interim pastor, I feel that I have had better ministry. The U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School commandant said he was proud of his team for making the event a success. We recognize that serving in the Army as a committed that those of us who are married do best with the support, encouragement, prayers, and participation of our spouse. I m incredibly proud of our cadre for offering this creative opportunity for brand new chaplain spouses to be both inspired and informed as they join the Army team and make a positive difference in their chaplain s call to take care of Soldiers and Families, said Chaplain (Col.) Jeff Hawkins, commandant of the USACHCS.

9 I became a soldier... 2ND BATTALION, 39TH INFANTRY REGIMENT PVT. NATHAN GUILLOT, 20 Marksville, Louisiana I joined the Army because I feel it is my duty as a United States citizen to serve my country. I have a strong passion to work hard and give my all back in honor of those who served before me. Getting to meet others from all of the world that have common goals and come together as one through some of the toughest times in one s life is a good part of basic training. I am a 15T UH60 Blackhawk Repairer. I have a strong interest in Blackhawks PVT. DILLON J. HANSEN, 20 Minneapolis I joined the Army to make a difference, help people, better myself and make my Family proud. I also want to represent my country in a positive way. The best part of basic training is all of the physical training and tactical training. My MOS is 42A Human Resources Specialist. I chose it because I wasn t sure what I wanted to do and my recruiter said it was a good job. My Family is proud of me and support my decision. They think it s a good idea what I am doing. NEWS PVT. MELL S. BADIEL, 18 PFC. VANESSA D. SALDANA, 32 Honolulu I joined the Army because it was my dream. I wanted to be like my Dad and he s responsible. During Basic Combat Training I met new friends, learned to be on time, get stuff done and be organized. I am a 92Y Unit Supply Specialist. I wasn t a U.S. citizen at the time so my choice of jobs was limited. My Family was proud of me because I knew why I joined and that my plans are set. They have my back 100 percent. SPC. ALYSIA N. My grandfather served in World War II and my father, uncles and many other Family members as well. drill sergeants that actually wanted to teach and cared about our performance was special. policy and enjoy leadership responsibilities. My Family is very supportive. Riverside, California I had considered joining for a long time. It was only after I had some unexpected job changes that triggered going to a recruiter and enlisting. The relationships that were created with the trainees in platoon were amazing. We push each other to complete everything put before us. I m a 42A Human Resources Specialist. I wanted an MOS that suited my skills and abilities and something I knew I could be passionate about. PVT. KYLER J. GREGORY, 19 Port Orchard, Washington I joined the Army to better myself and because I felt it s my duty to join. The main thing that I found good about basic training was getting familiar with the M4 carbine and qualifying with the weapon. I picked 91H (Track Vehicle Repairer) because I am already knowledgeable on vehicles and I wanted to learn about tanks. My Family was very excited and supportive of my enlistment.

They could also learn how to rapidly cool a heat casualty by dipping their elbows into ice water and the proper way to apply ice sheets. For Sgt. Valerie Booker, from Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 369th Adjutant General Battalion, the symposium was a lot more fun than she expected. It s actually fun, the writer/developer said. We have been learning a lot about things I never thought of. The highlight of her experience was remotely picking up a golf ball and placing the Talon. As you see in the camera its hard work to pick something up, McDowell said after helping Booker successfully pilot the ROV. That was the most fun, she said. Its hard work, but it was pretty cool. The crews are performing very well and maintenance is doing an extremely great job and no complaints, said Bulwinkle. Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4-118th and the 1263rd FSC provided operational missions and support as the Abrams, Bradley, and Scouts conducted their sectional diers spent nearly two weeks honing their sectional skills in preparation for more intensive training in the next two years.
