I can remember when Patriotism and Loyalty were considered virtues. Today, there may be some doubt about blind patriotism. However, if deserved, Loyalty will remain a virtue forever. Here is something to think about. Does the Omahawks R/C club deserve your loyalty? Who taught you to fly? 2 THE MINUTES Brad Shaink, Secretary GENERAL MEETING 2/22/02 OFFICERS PRESENT: Ron Williams, President Claude Weimer, Vice President Kevin Hyde, Treasurer Brad Shaink, Secretary BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Skip Brown, Dave Mills BEGIN MEETING There were 38 members in attendance. The meeting lasted 1 hour 55 minutes. OLD BUSINESS Ron Williams, President, opened the meeting with remarks on how great of a turnout the winter festival was. The winter festival event had media coverage by Omaha Channel 3 News, KMTV. MEMBERSHIP REPORT By Ralph Brown, Membership Chairman As of February 22, there are about 60 members signed up. Reminded everyone that all members must have a valid permit on April 1, 2002, in order to fly. SOUND Ron Williams reminded everyone that we must all police each other when it comes to being good neighbors regarding sound control at the field. A discussion proceeded about whether or not to publish anything related to sound. A few reasons not to was that publishing anything on sound control would do more harm than good. Another view point stated that the idea of not publishing anything on the issue of sound control is like putting your head in the sand. FUTURE FLYING SITE A discussion proceeded regarding the need to look for an additional flying location for the Omahawks to accommodate aspects of our hobby which do not lend itself to the current Hawk field, as well as locate a future flying site to secure the Omahawks interests given the surrounding neighborhood growth. WEBSITE A brief demonstration was given to all members on the new website All members are encouraged to get involved with the website by submitting photos, stories, building projects, etc. for publication on the site. All photos can be sent to bshaink@wilkinsonmfg.com NEW BUSINESS TURBINE & DUCTED FAN JETS Kevin Hyde discussed with the general membership that the subject of restricting the use of turbine-powered aircraft at Hawk field was discussed at the past Board Meeting. Reasons for restricting turbine-powered aircraft was in part due to: 1) the fact that jet fuel on board can cause a serious fire; and 2) jets fly differently than conventional RC aircraft, requiring them to maintain higher speeds for control and requiring greater turning radiuses. General Membership comments to the idea of restricting turbine-powered aircraft included: 1) turbine-powered aircraft do not fly faster than conventional prop-powered aircraft; and 2) turbine-powered aircraft can stay within the boundaries just as effectively as conventional prop-powered aircraft. Kevin Hyde asked the general membership for a show of hands of how many people would/would not be in favor of some sort of guidelines put in place regarding jet and ducted fan powered aircraft. A show of hands resulted in the following: 18 members present were in favor of providing control of Jet and Ducted Fan aircraft 9 members present were not in favor of providing control of Jet and Ducted Fan aircraft. Ron Williams stated that based on the discussion at the General Meeting and the positive support of the membership in guidelines on Jet and Ducted Fan aircraft, additional discussion will be conducted at the March Board Meeting. SHOW AND TELL John Thompson Showed his CAP 232 Doc Greenburg Showed his flight box on wheels Larry Brown Showed his B-29 in progress Bob Roegge Showed his Tiny Wanderer electric glider. Winners were Kim Wollen, Kevin Hyde, Ralph Brown, Skip Brown, Roger Brodd, Gene Alexander, Brandon Sewell, and Thomas Wheeler THE EVENT This month s main event featured a video presentation of 3D flying maneuvers by world renowned Tournament of Champions pilot, Jason Shulman. The video, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, demonstrated actual 3D maneuvers, general guidelines of how to setup an aircraft to perform these maneuvers, and a demonstration of the hardware setup of the plane used by Jason Shulman in the 2000 TOC events. BOARD MEETING 3/5/02 OFFICERS PRESENT: Ron Williams, President Claude Weimer, Vice President Kevin Hyde, Treasurer Brad Shaink, Secretary BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Skip Brown, Ward Neesen, Pat Malone Dave Mills Meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm. A total of 13 members were present for the meeting. OLD BUSINESS: MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Ralph Brown, Membership Chairman, reported there were 7 new members, or which 3 are junior members. Total membership stands at 78 members for 2002 so far. The March newsletter will be the last newsletter 2001 members will receive if they do not sign up for a 2002 membership. NEWSLETTER: Olie Olson, Editor of Hawk Talk, stated that Sunday March 10 th would be the deadline for news article submissions. Olie asked for a complete write up by a board member on how the meeting with the city officials went this year. TREASURES REPORT: Total Cash is $5, and Total Assets is $9, Liabilities are $0.00. A new category has been created to show member donations to the Red Cross fund established at the February General Meeting. A total of $8.00 has been donated to this general fund thus far. NEW BUSINESS: FLIGHT TRAINING: John Feneck was recommended to the Board as the new Flight Training Program Coordinator. John s responsibilities will be to oversee the entire training program, including the instructors and operations at the field. Discussion pursued regarding closing the field on Thursday nights after 6:00pm while the Flight Training Program is operational. Discussion included ideas ranging from allowing open flying for everyone under the direction of the Flight Training Program Coordinator to closing the field to only those individuals needing training or instructional assistance. A motion was made as follows: From 6:00pm to field close on Thursday nights during Daylight Savings Time, all flights must be made under the direction of an approved Omahawks flight instructor for the purposes of learning or needing assistance from an instructor, unless the Flight Training Program is cancelled for that evening. 5 Votes In Favor, 2 Votes Against. The motion passes. John Feneck stated there is a tentative list of twenty instructors available for It will be mandatory that each instructor be present two nights each month to be on the instructors list. Ground school will be on April 4 th at the Red Cross building. A motion was made as follows: The Omahawks Board ratifies John Feneck as Flight Training Program Coordinator. UNANI- MOUS. The motion passes. SPECIAL USE OF FIELD: A request was made by a local church to use the field on Easter Sunday morning. The church stated it conclude its use of the field by 9:00am. Discussion ensued regarding past use of the field by outside organizations along with previous decision by the board. Previous Omahawk s Board has already taken action on this issue by not allowing any outside organization special use of the field. Current board will take no additional action to address this issue. GENERAL MEETING PROGRAM (March): Dick Behrens will provide a slide show of floats and other which will last about 20 minutes. The Raffle for the March meeting will be one prize of the G-2 Flight Simulator. TURBINE AIRCRAFT: Discussion ensued regarding the issue of turbine-powered aircraft. The board had previously discussed this at the February Board Meeting as well as asking the General Membership for recommendations on how to handle the concerns regarding turbine-powered aircraft. Concerns relate directly to the safety of turbine-powered aircraft at Hawk Field, given the close proximity of our neighbors. Based on the recommendations from the general membership at the February General Membership meeting, the board discussed actions to improve safety which ranged from doing nothing additional to an all out ban on flying turbine-powered aircraft. A motion to add a Rule #15 to the Hawk Field Rules and Regulations was made as follows: Turbine aircraft operations must follow Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Safety Regulations For Model Aircraft Gas Turbines (AMA Website Document # 513). Pilots must have a current AMA Turbine Waiver, along with a signed AMA Sanctioned Event Participant s Statement of Compliance Concerning Turbine Engine Operation document and proof of a general liability insurance umbrella of at least $1,000,000 on file with the Omahawks Treasurer prior to any turbine operation, testing, or flying at Hawk Field. UNANIMOUS. The motion passes. SIGN FOR RULES AT HAWK FIELD: Ron Williams requested that Dave Mills, Field Chairman, look into the cost of building a sign to post the club rules and field boundaries. The sign would be approximately seven feet tall and two feet wide so that the Rules and Regulations governing Hawk Field can be displayed prominently for all members to view. Ron Williams asked Dave Mills to look into costs associated with extending the short safety fence to the south to provide more safety control of airplanes with regard to the pit area. HAWK FIELD REGULATIONS: A motion to add a Rule #16 to the Hawk Field Rules and Regulations was made as follows: All flying must stay within the boundaries of Standing Bear Park. UNANIMOUS. The motion passes. Photos, courtesy of Brad Shaink & Gene Alexander Join the A.M.A. 3

4 A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT I would like to thank everyone that helped make the Winter fest another successful event. For those that missed it check the website for several photos. Channel 3 even covered the crowning of the queen. It was nice to see our club on the evening news. I also want to congratulate our 2002 Queen, Ms. Jill Nastasi. It is hard to believe that April is almost here. The training program will be starting soon and before long the days will be longer and flying will be in full swing. The next upcoming event is the first float fly of the year on, April 23rd. Look for more information in the newsletter. In February we had our annual meeting with the city to discuss the past year and the upcoming flying season. We furnished them a list of things we would like to accomplish in the coming year, to which they responded favorably. They told us that they were very satisfied with our management of Hawk field and to keep up the good work. They also commented on our continuing good relationship with our neighbors. As the weather improves and flying increases at Hawk Field, we need to remain alert to the necessity of safe operating practices. Everyone needs to refresh their memories as to the current field regulations and follow them. Remember, we all go out to the field to have fun and it only takes one person to ruin that for everyone. Until next month, have fun and happy flying. Ron Williams MORNING BUNCH Dick Behrens reports another successful season of Winter morning meetings by the Omahawk Morning Bunch at the Abrahams Library. Fourteen attended the last meeting of this years series of four on March 4th. Bob Burt, Frank Wisniski, Bob Hess, Gale Sherman Galen Lillethorup and Joe Cole provided the entertainment. A total of Thirty four attended at least once during the season. Everyone was happy to hear that Sandra Eheman, George s wife, is recovering at home from a long awaited liver transplant. Tuesday, April 23 is the date of the first Omahawk morning float fly of the season. (Continued from page 1) Join the A.M.A. nances which allowed such a field to exist? Who attempts to please over 200 member families and keep their public flying site attractive and safe each year? Who is constantly searching for new programs and events to make our hobby more fun? Through the years, thirty nine presidents, God only knows haw many other officers and board members, plus many hundreds of just plain members (like you and me) have devoted their time and best efforts to make the Omahawks a great club. Think about it. Don t they deserve the loyalty of all of us? 4 Olie

6 Cut and save Save last page On the right are the current field regulations. Please read, understand and follow them. They exist for your safety and the security of the field. Pay special attention to Nos.7, 8, 10 and 16. There is no leeway with these. Three strikes and your out. On the reverse side, you will find the new Flight Instructors list. Don t be afraid to call them and ask for help. On November 28th 1953 Dick Olson and thirteen other modelers met to create the first R/C club in Nebraska. Although two license free frequencies had been available for model aircraft use for a couple of years, there was no urgency to start a club. The first R/C experimenters simply moved in with the Control Line and Free Flight modelers, who were ensconced on the vacated Benson Park golf course, where they had been allowed to operate since the late 30s. After Paul Ennis was selected as the first President, Bob Johnson as Vice President and Ken Oliver as Secretary/ Treasurer, an initiation fee of $1 was established with dues of 50 cents per month. Other business included the selection of the last Friday of each month at 7:00 PM as the official meeting time and authorized Ken Oliver to buy some post cards, in order to communicate with the membership. It was not until the December meeting that a By-Law committee was formed and OmaHawks R/C was selected as the groups official name. (Please note the capital H.) Other name suggestions were Bell Aires, Omaha Radio Control Club, Button hounds and St Elmo's Fire. We were MEAD NEBRASKA OLD TIMERS Bob Burt is a multi club member and promoter. As a loyal Omahawk and also a member of the Western Flyers Club, he would like to invite all AMA members to come out and play with their pre 42 R/C Free Flight models at the Mead Field on the second Sunday of each month. Each session will start at!0:00 AM and a free lunch will be served at noon to all participants. Bob says that (for the competitive folk) both SAM and OMAHA type competition events will also be offered. If this sounds like fun to you. Remember that the 2ns Sunday, each month, is the date and give Bob a call at for additional details. certainly lucky with the final choice. Shifting gears a bit... Our newsletter morphed from a postcard to a Ditto copied sheet, then mimeographed copies in 1973 and in 1983 the first printed news-letters were produced as shown on page 5. Member Bill Ferretti agreed to become the new producer, using his fancy new Electric Typewriter which offered a variety of fonts. A major improvement. Take a good look at page 5 (the first page of the March 83 edition of Hawk Talk) and you will realize that little has changed over he past 19 years. Is that Good or bad? Darned if I know 6 Olie
