4 INTRODUCTION The records of the Canadian Army and its various branches were acquired by U. Vic. Special Collections in 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984 and They document various military activities in both World Wars and after, including battles, training programmes for officers and enlisted men, drills, parades and intelligence tests, and include textual and photographic records. Much of the information complements that found in other military records at U. Vic., such as the papers of Reginald Herbert Roy, which researchers may also wish to consult. Further accruals are likely; this inventory will be updated as required. 1

5 ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORIES/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES The Canadian Army was established in 1855 when the government passed the Militia Act, which provided for a paid, regular army consisting of active, volunteer militia. Its forerunner was the militia dating back to The Canadian Army ceased in February 1968 with the integration of the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force under the Canadian Armed Forces. CANADA. DEPT. OF NATIONAL DEFENCE Department was created by Parliament and is headed by its appointed minister. The Governor-General of Canada, in his/her capacity as the Sovereign's representative, is Commander-in-chief of the Canadian Armed Forces. CANADA. 1st CANADIAN ARMY CANADIAN ARMED FORCES est. 1 February CANADIAN MILITIA TRAINING CENTRE NO GORDON HEAD CAMP Est with huts built on the present University of Victoria Campus (west of Finnerty Road, where the tennis courts now stand) during the summer of Beginning in October 1940, the camp housed drafted trainees who were called up through the National Resources Mobilization Act passed in June The camp served as an officer training camp ( ), a casualty retraining centre ( ), a hospital examination and rehabilitation centre for POW's returning from Japan ( ), a housing centre for returning veterans and their families ( ), and during the 1950's housed various regiments connected with the Korean War. On 8 June 1959 the camp was sold to Victoria College which converted the huts into classrooms, administration buildings and cafeterias. CANADIAN OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS (COTC). UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA CONTINGENT The COTC was organized 1 November 1912 as part of the nonpermanent active militia establishment to provide training facilities at Canadian universities and colleges for officer cadets. CORPS OF ROYAL CANADIAN ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Established 1 February 1944 as the Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and established under its present designation on 13 April

6 3 ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORIES/BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES CURRIE, SIR ARTHUR Born on 5 December 1875 near Strathroy, Ontario, and died on 30 November 1933 in Montreal, Quebec. His surname was originally spelled Curry; the spelling was changed in Currie was the first Canadian appointed Commander of the Canadian troops during the World War, He had no previous professional military experience but had served in the Canadian militia. He was appointed Commander of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade in 1914, 1st Canadian Division in 1915 and the Canadian Corps in He participated in Passchendaele and Vimy Ridge, and was knighted by King George V on 12 July British Prime Minister Lloyd George called him "a brilliant military commander". Currie served as Inspector-General of the militia forces in Canada from , and in August 1920 he was appointed principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University in Montreal, a position he held until his death. DAY, R.W. Served in Sidney Camp, Sidney, B.C., during the World War, DIEPPE RAID This raid, known as Operation Jubilee, was conducted across the English Channel on 19 August 1942 on Dieppe, a small port on the French coast between Le Havre and Boulogne, planned as a "reconnaissance force" to test the Western Allies' capability to launch large-scale amphibious assaults on Europe. The raid was a major disaster. Troops of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division under Maj.-Gen. J.H. Roberts failed to achieve any of their objectives. The Raid lasted nine hours. Of the nearly 5,000 Canadian soldiers involved, more than 900 were killed and 1,874 taken prisoner, more prisoners than the army lost in the 11 months of the North-West Europe campaign. In the air battle the Allies lost 106 aircrafts and 81 airmen, the Royal Canadian Air Force 13 machines and 10 pilots. The Germans lost 48 aircraft and otherwise had light casualties. The raid provided valuable experience for subsequent amphibious assaults in North Africa and especially Normandy. Failure of the Dieppe raid has been blamed on the use of inexperienced troops, poor and overly complex planning, inadequate training and insufficient fire support. 2nd SPECIAL SERVICE BATTALION The Victoria Special Service Battalions (Militia) included the 155 Transport Company, R.C.A.S.C. and the 40 Technical Squadron, R.C.E.M.E. 16th (CANADIAN SCOTTISH) INFANTRY BATTALION Based at Camp Valcartier, Quebec, this battalion comprised

7 volunteers from Victoria. During the World War, , the battalion fought in France as a unit of the 3rd Infantry Brgiade, and is perpetuated by the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's). 4
