Welcome by the Commanding Officer of 802 Squadron, Warrant Officer (AAFC) Lush The Staff of 802 Squadron Palmerston, Australian Air Force Cadets, take great pleasure in welcoming both our new Cadet and their parents to the Squadron. We thank you for choosing to join the ranks of the AAFC and hope that you will enjoy your shared Cadet experience. We are pleased you have come to join us. To get the most out of Cadets we advise you take every opportunity to attend the activities we have on offer. These activities include Bivouacs (Camping), Trial Instructional Flights, Range Shooting, Dining In Nights, Passing Out Parades, Promotional Courses, Anzac Day and Remembrance Day Parades. Cadets also have opportunities to attend General Service Training Camps (GST) on RAAF Bases. It is through this they can experience life on base and explore the various jobs that are performed there; they eat in the Airmen s Mess and get a glimpse of what life in the Defence Force is all about. There are other opportunities to gain knowledge, further your cadet career and gain confidence in yourself when you have the chance to attend promotional courses. I know from experience the next few months may be a little daunting for our young Cadets and their parents, as there are so many new things to learn. We have devised this booklet in a hope that it will help you with the customs and protocols of Cadets, the terms and acronyms used and a few helpful hints to assist you to settle in. We would like to make you feel a part of the Squadron as quickly as possible. Parents please feel free to ask any of the Staff for assistance at any time during your Cadet s involvement with the Squadron. We would like to invite parents and cadets to join our Facebook page "802 Squadron Australian Air Force Cadets" where you can support the squadron and keep up to date with planned activities. We would like to thank you once again for choosing to join 802 Squadron Palmerston Australian Air Force Cadets. I hope that your Cadet experience will be a life changing one and you will make many lifelong friends both at this Squadron, throughout 8 Wing (NT) and the greater Australian Air Force Cadets. Kind regards Lush A short history of 802 Squadron AAFC 802SQN started life as No 2 Flight, Northern Territory Air Training Corps (AIRTC) when there became too many cadets in 1 Flight and a second was raised to cope with the numbers. Since these early days both the AAFC and 802 Squadron have continued to change and grow. 2 Flight paraded at RAAF Darwin for many years before moving out to the NTES compound at Yarrawonga. 802 Squadron now has its very own home at the Palmerston Senior College in Driver, which is located in the seniors building (G Block). The dedicated staff and enthusiastic cadets of 802 Squadron are a true testament to the positive aspects that the AAFC introduces to the lives of our Youth. Page 3 of 24

Each night a senior cadet is nominated as a Duty Member. This Duty Member is responsible that all classes adhere to our nightly timetable, and manage items such as the Unit Roll, Visitors Book, and any other tasks that the staff may have for them. The roster for the Duty Member is on the notice board at the squadron. During out Parade Nights, we have a canteen we operate for the cadets. We offer soft drink, chocolates and a meal. 7 Personal Development Radio Communications Service Knowledge Parent Survival Guide Squadron Management Survival Team Building Visual Tracking Code of Behaviour The AAFC is committed to providing a safe, fair and equitable place for all its members, both cadets and staff. Each cadet (and staff member) has signed a code of behaviour form acknowledging what is expected of them as part of the AAFC. This is reinforced each year with each cadet having to undertake a Behavioural Policy lecture annually. As a Cadet you are expected to: 1. Treat others with respect and dignity; 2. Recognise that everyone is different and that differences are a great strength because we can learn from others and better appreciate each other as unique human beings; 3. Make decisions that are fair for everyone. This is about making sure everyone is given a fair go and has the same opportunity to share their ideas and join in activities; 4. Recognise, prevent and report unacceptable behaviour like harassment and bullying, discrimination, swearing, threats, violence, unsafe activities or abuse of positions of responsibility; 5. Behave with integrity by being honest to yourselves and others; 6. Be accountable for your actions and decisions. Take responsibility for your actions and do not blame others or make excuses for your behaviour; 7. Respect your Cadet Officers and Supervisors and obey their lawful directions that relate to you as a Cadet; 8. Carry out Cadet tasks assigned to you in accordance with relevant policies; 9. Keep a clean and tidy standard of dress while wearing your Cadet Service uniform because you represent your parent Service and must look and behave in a manner that supports the good reputation of your parent Service; and 10. Stay true to Cadet values of honour, honesty, courage, integrity, loyalty and teamwork. Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme The Duke of Edinburgh s Award Scheme is a worldwide self development program for young people aged DEAS has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each of these levels has four sections Skills, Service, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey. The Gold Award also has a Residential Project. Page 7 of 24

Through this program, you will gain Australia s most recognised youth achievement award and demonstrate valuable skills to get a job and it looks great on a resume! 802 Squadron is currently encouraging our cadets to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh program as it also goes toward the NTCE Certificate (NT Certificate of Educate/year 12) and we recommended using Cadets as the skill component. Social Media in the AAFC It seems like everything these days is online, especially Facebook. The AAFC has guidelines on the use of Facebook and a Social Media Policy (available on the resource centre on Cadetnet). These policies are designed to protect our cadets, staff and the AAFC as an organisation. Here at 802 Squadron we have a facebook page for the Squadron. Called 802 Squadron Australian Air Force Cadets. This page is used very well and all posts/comments are moderated by staff to maintain the integrity of the page. Cadets are permitted to post photos of the experiences in the AAFC on Facebook providing that: If the photo contains any other cadet, the poster of the photo has that second persons permission to post the photograph The photograph or comments does not bring the cadet or the AAFC into disrepute. We advise the cadets that if they wouldn t be comfortable for that comment or picture to appear on the front page of a major newspaper, then it would be best to avoid posting it. The Australian Air Force Cadets have a policy where a staff member is prohibited to be a friend of a cadet on Social Media sites such as Facebook. Page 8 of 24

Ranks in the AAFC As you can see from the terms above, there are quite a few different ranks that cadets can achieve in the AAFC. Please see below for the insignia for each rank, and the associated title. Cadets are able to rise through the ranks after the meet the pre requisites. All ranks (excepting LCDT and CFSGT) require a cadet to attend a promotion course (usually 2 weeks long). Staff have very similar rank slides to cadets, but are split into two distinct groups, Instructors (Airmen) and Officers. With Service Dress, the most notable difference is the different colour stripe at the bottom of the rank slide. Sky blue denotes cadets, and white denotes staff. Promotion Paths There are certain requirements that all cadets must achieve to be eligible for promotion or reclassification. Some of these are below RCT to CDT (Recruit to Cadet) Successfully complete the first stage of training, typically completed on a recruit weekend. CDT to LCDT (Cadet to Leading Cadet) Successfully complete the Basic stage of training. This normally takes 12 months to complete. This is a reclassification. LCDT to CCPL (Leading Cadet to Cadet Corporal) Hold the rank of LCDT for a minimum of 6 months and successfully complete a Junior Non Commissioned Officer course. CCPL to CSGT (Cadet Corporal to Cadet Sergeant) Hold the rank of CCPL for a minimum of 6 months, and successfully complete a Senior Non Commissioned Officer course. CSGT to CFSGT (Cadet Sergeant to Cadet Flight Sergeant) Hold the rank of CSGT for a minimum of 6 months, and meet any other criteria set within the squadron. CSGT (or CFSGT) to either CWOFF or CUO (Cadet Sergeant to Cadet Warrant Officer or Cadet Under Officer) Typically a cadet will make a decision to aim for either CWOFF or CUO within their cadet careers. Both ranks require the cadet to attend a 3 week promotion course. CWOFF s and CUO s have much higher responsibility within the squadron and are referred to as Cadet Staff. Page 9 of 24

Uniform Standards As we are modelled on the Royal Australian Air Force, we embrace a number of their customs. One of these is regarding uniform. We are privileged to be permitted to wear the same uniform as the RAAF, and as such must ensure that our cadets and staff wear the uniform correctly. There is a document that the AAFC has published that outlines exactly how each part of the uniform is to be worn. This document is called the AAFC Uniform Instructions, and is available from the AAFC Resource Centre, and under the Reference Manuals and Publications section. If your cadet is unable to find the information in the Uniform Instructions, we encourage them to speak to one of our Cadet NCO s for assistance. If they are unable to help, our staff are more than happy to assist. What uniform is worn when? We wear different uniforms for different occasions. As a general rule, we wear Service Dress (blues) to all ceremonial activities (ANZAC Day, Passing Out Parades, Dining In Nights etc), and DPCU s (cam s) to all field activities. For local parade nights, Service Dress is worn for the first parade of each term, and the first parade of each month. DPCU s are worn the remaining parade nights. All uniform requirements for activities are listed in the Joining Instructions for the activity. Information on how to find these Joining Instructions is listed below Tips for Uniform Maintenance The uniform that we issue each cadet is worth just under $ , so it is important that we take good care of it. Whilst there is no charge for the uniform, we expect the uniforms returned at the end of their cadet career thus allowing us to reissue majority of items. Some tips for taking care of your uniform: Always store your Hat Fur Felt on a flat surface to keep the brim flat. If the brim is not flat, place it on a table with heavy books on the brim overnight. Alternatively, a hat press can quite easily be made. Please ask the staff for more info. Hang your SD Pants back up in their creases when not wearing them. Also, keep the bag they come back in from the dry cleaners and store them in this as well. Get your pants dry cleaned before ANZAC Day and the Passing Out Parade. Use some spray on starch on your shirt sleeves to get that razor crease finish. Keep a lint roller in your bag to remove any unwanted fur or hair. Wipe your Patent Leather shoes over with warm soapy water. Continually polish your GP Boots. It is easy to get that high shine if you keep the polishing routine up. We encourage cadets to start to learn to wash and iron their own shirts and pants, as they will be required to do this for themselves when they go away on camps and courses. Page 10 of 24

Uniform Issue Each cadet is entitled to a certain amount of uniform (referred to as Scale of Issue). Unfortunately, some of this may not be in stock at Squadron when your cadet is kitted out. An order is then placed in the C-LOG system to get these items, but sometimes the delivery of these items can take quite a while. Once these items are received, they will be issued to your cadet. If you have any questions about the uniform issued to your cadet, please ask the staff. Activities Local Squadron Activities There are quite a few activities that 802 Squadron either conduct or participate in. Your cadet will be able to nominate for these via Cadet One. These include: Anzac Day Parade (one of the most important events we attend as Cadets), Passing Out Parade at the end of the year, Dining In Night at the end of the year, WTSS (Weapons Training Simulation System) a air power electronic range at Robertson Barracks, Shooting.22 calibre rifles at approved ranges, Several Bivouacs (bush camps) each year, Recruit Weekends, Trial Instruction Flight day and Social activities Note on Shooting Events - All cadets and staff MUST pass the Firearms Training Elective subject before being permitted to handle live firearms. Wing Activities There are a number of activities held at a Wing (state) level that cadets are able to attend. These include (but are not limited to): GST s (General Service Training) at the RAAF bases in NT, Promotion Courses at RAAF Darwin or interstate, Powered Flying, Aero Modelling, Wing Competitions, Adventuring Training Camp, Wing Bivouacs and Wing Parades. Bivouacs or Bivs There are several items that you are able to purchase for your cadet that will assist them greatly in Biv s but we try to issue the cadets with the key items in stock. As your cadet goes on more and more biv s they will refine what equipment they need. Some of these are: KFS Set - Knife Fork and Spoon Set Dixies - collapsible bowls for eating Torch - red light capability required Sleeping Bag - preferably one with a low degree rating Webbing - to carry water bottles and items needed for patrols Kidney Cup - a solid metal cup with collapsible handle Hexamine Fuel Stove - used for cooking meals Houtchie - plastic sheet housing two people Pack - Military gear used to carry items in the field Sunscreen - for protection from the sun Foam Camping Mat - to sleep on Insect Spray/Gel First Aid Kit - to treat minor blisters and cuts Page 11 of 24

Scholarships There are several scholarships available to AAFC Cadets. These include RAAF Sponsored Powered and Gliding scholarships (which are available each year), RSL Cadet of the Year, plus other various scholarships that cadets are able to apply for. When these scholarships are available, cadets will be advised. Gliding isn't currently available in the NT due to supply facilities. Experiences of some of our higher ranking cadets Cadet Sergeant De Fransz During my time in the AAFC I have been involved in many different kinds of activities such as flying, fieldcraft, shooting, and drumming and promotion courses. All of the things I do at cadets has and will give me life experience and skills to help me along my way to success. In cadets I have been able to take control of an aircraft which was one of the highlights, but another has been the involvement in ANZAC parades; marching along with the ADF to mark the anniversary of the ANZAC landings. Cadet Corporal Liddelow I have been a part of the Australian Air Force Cadets for a total of 11 months, during this short amount of time I ve learnt many valuable skills. I have also become a lot more disciplined than I was when I began at my squadron. I am also a part of 8 Wing s Drum Corp, I am the assistant lead bass and I enjoy playing as a flight for events including ANZAC Day marches and annual parades. I recently attended a two week promotional course in Perth at RAAF Base Pearce, completing this course deems me qualified for promotion to the next cadet rank, this being Cadet Corporal. The Cadet Junior Non Commissioned Officers Course is a challenging, exiting experience that I would definitely live again. Page 12 of 24

Introduction to CadetOne Parent Survival Guide The AAFC has its own internet based system called Cadet One, which is used for many functions: See your training record and attendance Nominate for camps and activities Printing out a TR66 Parent Consent Form Get the Joining Instructions and Administrative Instructions for various activities. Logging On to CadetOne Before we can do any of the above functions, we first need to be able to login to CadetOne. First, open up your Internet Browser and go to cadetone.aafc.org.au. How to nominate for a local Squadron activity Most of the fun you have in the AAFC happens on weekends and wing camps. But to be able to be attend these activities, you need to nominate yourself for them! Page 14 of 24

To nominate, click on the Activities Tab and select Activity Calendar, and you will see the following screen: If you are looking to nominate for an activity from your Home Squadron, the best thing to do is apply a filter to only show the activities from your home squadron. This is done by selecting the third dropdown, and selecting your squadron, as shown below. Handy Tip: If you are looking for an activity that is ran by another Squadron, tick the box Only display activities that I am eligible to nominate for instead of applying the filter mentioned above. This filter will show you ALL activities you are able to nominate for, including both Local Squadron and Wing activities! Once you have selected your home Squadron, you should see a screen as shown below. Click on Search You will see a list of activities hosted by your home squadron, in this example 802 Squadron Page 15 of 24

To nominate for an activity, simply click on the activity. In this example, we will nominate for the activity (27196) Fieldcraft Basic Biv. Once you click on the Activity, you should see a screen as shown below: Click on Nominations. You will see a page similar to below. To nominate, simply click on the button next to Cadet and click Nominate. You will then get a notification that your nomination is successful, or you are still on a waiting list (as shown below) You will also receive an automatically generated advising the same as above. If you are on the Waiting List for the activity, you will be sent an if your nomination is successful. For local Squadron Activities, if you have any questions please see your Squadron staff. Page 16 of 24

How to nominate for a Wing activity Parent Survival Guide To nominate for a Wing level activity, the process is very similar to nominating for a local Squadron activity. Click on the Activities Tab and select Activity Calendar, and you will see the following screen: Simply click Search. This will show a very large list of all activities that have been entered for both your local Squadron and the wing. You can apply filters (such as date or activity type) by using the filters above. An example of the large list of activities is shown below. The nomination process from this point for a Wing level activity is identical to a local Squadron activity. Simply click on the Activity you want to nominate for, click on Nominations, and nominate for the activity. Most Wing level activities all nominations require endorsement by the Detachment Commander. This means that your nomination may not be accepted straight away. If you have any questions about nominations or nominating for a Wing level activity, please see your Squadron staff. Page 17 of 24

Parent Survival Guide Printing out a TR66 (Parent Consent Form) For every activity you attend as a cadet, you will be required to print off and complete 2 TR66 s or Parent Consent Forms. Why two? One form is given to the activity staff (often via a nominated Cadet NCO), and the other is kept in the cadet s top pocket in case of emergency, in a zip-lock plastic bag with the cadets Blue Book. If you arrive at an activity without your TR66 s you will not be allowed to participate in the activity. To print your TR66, click on Activities and go to My Activities. For an activity to appear in your My Activities list, you first must have nominated for it. Once you have found the activity under My Activities, click on it to expand it so you see all the activity info, such as shown below. Click on Parental Consent Form This will download a TR66 with most of the required information automatically inserted into the document. Print two copies off and complete as shown below. Filling out a TR66 At first glance, the TR66 can be a confusing document, but hopefully this guide makes it easier for you. These forms are designed for a parent or guardian to complete. Please see below for a screen capture of the TR66. Each field has a red number next to it and further information on each of these fields is shown below: Note: When generating a TR66 via CadetOne, a lot of the fields below will be automatically filled out using the cadet s information in CadetOne 1. 23 This request then goes to your Squadron Supply Officer (SSO) to review this request. If it is approved a new item will be issued when you return the faulty item. Requesting a new item If you need to request a new item, the process is very similar to a Exchange Request. When in the main C-LOG screen, simply click on Uniform Request in the menu on the left hand side. Once you click on Uniform Request you will see the following page. The first thing you need to do is select the Uniform Type. This is a drop down box. In this example we will request a new pair of 85R Men s Service Dress Trousers. We select SD Mens from the Uniform Type drop down. This then allows us to further refine our request in the Description drop down. Then we select Trousers Mens AFB Heavyweight. (NOTE : AFB is short for Air Force Blue. Also, where you have an option for Lightweight or Heavyweight clothing). Select the correct size. This request we will choose 80R. We only want one pair, and the reason is Initial Issue. This will look as shown below: Click on Send Request to submit the request. After pressing the Send Request button, you will see the following screen: Page 23 of 24

This request now goes to the SSO for approval. If the items are not in stock at the local squadron, the SSO will request these items from 8 LOGISTICS FLIGHT based at RAAF Darwin. If you have any questions about using C-LOG or clothing items, please see your Squadron Supply Officer, or any of your Squadron Staff. Page 24 of 24
