3 UNT MOVEMENTS 2 FEB The first increment of MCB FOUR departed Poi nt Mugu, Caifornia, for Phu Bai, RVN. The 266 men and their baggage were transported by two commercia jets to Cark AFB in the Phiippines where they were transferred to C-30's for t he fi ght to Phu Bai. The ast C- 30 carrying MCB FOUR personne arrived at Phu Bai at 700 on 4 February 968. The fina C- 30, with cargo which had been transported from Point Mugu to Cark AFB on a C-4 MAC Aircraft, arrived on 5 February at Phu Bai. The first fight of the second increment of MCB FOUR departed Point Mugu for Danang, RVN at 000 on 3 February by commercia jet with 65 passengers. Two more fights foowed on 4 "February and 5 February respectivey. A three fights anded in Danang, the ast arriving at 0900, 7 February 968. Four C-4 MAC Aircraft were used to transport cargo f rom Point Mugu to Danang. No major probems were encountered during the entire main body movement. 5 APR Seabee Teams 0408 and 0409 arrived at their depoyment sites from CBCEN Port Hueneme, Caifornia, where the teams had been in training since November. 22 APR The 26 man Chu Lai detai returned to Danang after competing their assigned projects. The detai's equipment and toos, which were shipped from Chu Lai to Danang, arrived i n Danang on 23 Apri MAY 7 men departed Danang by C-30 for Phu Bai to begin construction of an M8A matting parking apron for 220TH Aviation. The detai stayed at MCB EGHT ' s camp. 20 MAY A five man MCB FOUR detai departed Danang to rewire six Specia Forces Camps south of Danang, iving and working in each camp for approximatey a week. 6 JUL The main body of MCB FOUR personne moved from Camp Haskins Nort h, RVN to Camp Evans, RVN between 27 May 968 and 4 June 968. Both truck convoy and C- 23 cargo aircraft were used in the move. On 3 June 968 the MCB FOUR fag was transferred to Camp Evans. 43 men comprising MCB FOUR's detai Foxtrot, which had been competing construction projects in Danang, returned to Camp Haines by both air and convoy.! 22 JUL The five man MCB FOUR detai which had been rewiring six Specia Forces camps south of Danang returned to Camp Haines after competing the projects. 9 SEP The MCB FOUR Advance Party departed Camp Haines for Phu Bai where they spent the night t with MCB ONE THRTY-THREE. On 20 September 968, the Advance Party of 20 men with LT J.H.T. MLES as OC departed Phu Bai on a C-8 aircraft for CBCEN, Port Hueneme, Caifornia. 22 OCf The first MCB FOUR Main Body fight departed Camp Evans by C- 30 aircraft for Danang. The first MCB FOUR Main Body fight of 70 men eft Oanang at 0055 on 23 October on a United Super OC-8 Aircraft for Point Mugu, Caifornia. A main body fights eft Camp Evans on C-30 or C-23 aircraft for Danang, then switched to commercia aircraft for the fight to Caifornia. The fifth and fina commercia fight eft Oanang at 905 on 27 October and anded at Norton AFB, Caifornia at 2358 on 27 j October. Bus transportation was provided from Norton AFB to CBC Port Hueneme. 2

4 CHRONOLOGY 4 FEB MCB FOUR was notified to prepare for possibe immediate depoyment to RVN. 8 FEB MCB FOUR sent a message that t he Battaion was ready. to depoy. 9 FEB MCB FOUR was notified to depoy as soon as transportation coud be made avaiabe. 2 FEB MCB FOUR was notified that the first pane was schedued to eave Point Mugu, Caifornia that same evening. Pina preparations were competed during the afternoon to depoy the first increment of MCB FOUR to Phu Bai and the second increment to Danang, RVN. By 2330, the 266 man first increment had departed Point Mugu and was airborne he ading for Phu Bai, RVN on two commercia jets. 5 FEB At 00, the fina C-30 with cargo arrived at Phu Bai. At 2200, the fifth fight of MCB FOUR personne departed CONUS on a commercia jet for Danang, competing th'e personne ari ft from CBCEN, Port Hueneme, Caifornia. 6 FEB At. 0900, the fina passenger fight of MCB FOUR arrived. in Danang. 2 FEB THRTY- FVE Charie Company personne departed Danang by LST for Chu Lai for construction of the aircraft revetment covers for Marine Air Group TWELVE (MAG-2). 22 FEB E02 H.H. AGUAYO was injured when the tractor in which he was riding hit a mine on Route # south of Phu Bai. ' ( (FEBi':-c:DR R.M. FLUSS, CO USN MCB FOUR reieved CDR W.W. MAR Personne from both Deta Company and Bravo Company received enemy sma arms fire f whie working on a chain ink fence project at Force Logistics Command (PLC), Danang. J No MCB FOUR personne were injured... 2 MAR An arri va conference was hed at Camp Haskins with RADM J.V. BARTLETT, Commander; THRD Nava Construction Brigade and CAPT C.W. TURNER, Commander, 30NCR. 4 MAR At 040, MCB FOUR set Defense Condition when surrounding units received incoming rocket rounds. MCB FOUR secured from Defense Condition at At 0709, MCB FOUR agai n went into Defense Condition when PLC received four (4) rocket rounds. At 0800, MCB FOUR secured from Defense Condition. 5 MAR ENS J.T. SAWYER and five surveyors departed' Camp HaSkins North for Camp Evans to begin topographic sux-veys of the proposed Seabee camp site at Camp Evans. 7 MAR The Seatrain Georgia arrived in Danang Harbor. The cargo ship carried the Battaion's toos, equipment and materias from Port Hueneme, Caifornia, to Danang, RVN. 25 MAR The MCB FOUR detai at Camp Evans received approximatey ten rounds of mortar fire within their perimeter between 0040 and No MCB 'FOUR personne were injured. LT J.H.T. MLES, MCB FOUR S-2 Officer, was designated as OC of the Camp Evans detai. 26 MAR The Battaion Fied Mess at Camp Evans served its first mea at noon and comp etey supported the Seabee Camp at Evans. 29 MAR E03 D.W. ROBEY was wounded by shrapne when the NMCB EGT camp at Gia Lai, RVN, received six rounds of enemy 22mm rockets. 3 APR Camp Haskins Nort h went into Defense Condition at 000 when the heicopter pad at Red Beach received approximatey 3 mortar rounds. Condition was secured at 043. S APR A S ton cargo truck driven by CEC L.G. FEDLER, detonated an enemy mine at the Hai Land Road, Hai Lang, RVN. CHEF FEDLER received no injuries. 3

5 Seabee Team 0408 arrived in Ca Dau Ha, RVN, and Seabee Team 0409 arrived in Vinh Long, RVN, to begin engineering construction support. 6 APR CM2 T.J. BAKER and CMCN M.D. CHASCSA were wounded whie riding in a truck which struck a and mine in Hai Lang, RVN. 0 APR Camp Evans received i2 rocket rounds with one of the rockets anding within the Seabee camp perimeter. No MCB FOUR personne were injured, nor was any equipment damaged. 5 APR An MCB FOUR crew instaing fence aong the FLC perimeter at Red Beach, Danang, r eceived ight sma arms fire. No personne were injured. 25 APR RADM W.M. HEAMAN, COMCBPAC, visited the new Seabee camp at Camp Evans. 27 APR An MCB FOUR MRS detonated a mine 3 mies south of Camp Evans on Route #. The right whee assemby of the MRS was damaged. No personne were injured. 29 APR At 400, Camp Evans received 4 rounds of 22mm rockets, none of which fe within the Seab.ee perimeter. No MCB FOUR personne were injured. 5 MAY Camp Haskins North, went into Defense Condition at 0200 when FLC received incoming rocket rounds. At 0600, FLC again r eceived incoming rocket rounds. At 0745, NMCB FOUR secured from Condition. At 000, Camp Evans received approximatey 20 rounds of 22mm rockets. None anded 'within the Seabee perimeter. Two MCB FOUR vehices received shrapne damage. No MCB FOUR personne were injured. 6 MAY LZ Say, adjacent to PK-7, took a number of mortar/rocket rounds at 730. None of the MCB FOUR detai there was injured. 9 MAY At 0720, Camp Evans received 5 rounds of 22mrn rockets, none of which anded within the Seabee Perimeter. One MCB FOUR berthing hut received sight damage when one round detonated approximatey 5 feet from the tent. No MCB FOUR personne were i njured.. 0 MAY Sma arms fire was received by the An Lo Bridge repair crew at 230. No MCB FOUR personne were injured. 3 MAY At approximatey 005, Camp Evans received 6 rounds of 22mm rockets. Another 3 rounds were received at No rounds anded in the Seabee area and no MCB FOUR personne were injured. An MCB FOUR fue truck detonated a mine 3 mies south of Camp Evans on Route #. rear end of the :truck was damaged. No MCB FOUR personne were injured. The 9 MAY 20 MAY 2 MAY At 930, Camp Evans received 0 rounds of 22mm rockets. One hit the ASP. Fires and exposions spread to the major ASP and fue farm. Concussion from the bast and debris from shes and rockets bown into the MCB FOUR camp caused moderate damage to the Repair Parts Buiding and minor damage to the Apha Company Shops. The MCB FOUR wrecker received shrapne through the front windows. Five 6'x32' huts receivea moderate bast and shrapne damage. The exposions continued into the morning of the 20th. CMCN M.G. BLAKELY and E03 R.E. HARRSON were kied when their five ton tractor traier fe from the An Lo Bridge. The truck was oaded with construction materias enroute to Camp Evans from the Bridge 5 Ramp near Hue, RVN. LCDR G.R. MATTHEWS, COMCBPAC Code 3A and CAPT J. MURPHY, USMC, COMCBLANT arrived at Camp Haskins North to inspect the S-2 functions. At 050, Camp Evans received 7 rounds of 22mm rockets. No rounds anded in the Seabee area and no Seabee personne were injured. 22 MAY Camp Haskins North went into Defense Condition at 000 when FLC received 22mm rockets and the ST Air Cavary heo pad received mortar rounds. 6 27 MAY The first convoy of the MCB FOUR Main Body movement departed Camp Haskins North for Camp Evans. 28 MAY The first main body air fight of 47 persons departed Danang for Camp Evans. Heavy rains and winds at Camp Evans caused some damage to berthing huts and administra- tion buidings in the new Seabee camp. UN CDR C.J. MATHEWS, CO USN MCB FFTY-EGHT assumed contro of Camp Haskins North from CDR R.M. FLUSS, CO USN MCB FOUR. The MCB FOUR fag was transferred to Camp Evans, and operationa contro was changed to THRTY-SCOND Nava Construction Regiment. 4 JUN The third and ast main body fight of MCB FOUR personne with LCDR J.E. McNELL, XO USN MCB FOUR, departed Danang for Camp Evans. 7 JUN LCDR H.C. DeGROTTE, MSC, COMSERVPAC Staff, visited Camp Evans to inspect genera sanitation and medica/denta faciities. 4 JUN Camp Haskins North, Danang, received. t wo 22mm rocket rounds which anded near the Apha Company Shops. No MCB FOUR personne were injured. 5 JUN The Danang Red Beach area received ten 22mm rockets at' 0520, none of which anded within the Seabee perimeter. 8 JUN Camp Evans received seven rounds of 22mm rockets, none of which anded in the Seabee area. 20 JUN RADM J.V. BARTLETT, COM3NCB,and CAPT J.M. HLL,_ JR., COM32NCR,arrived at Camp Haines and visited the Seabee job sites. j i i., 3. i i j : 30 JUN CAPT C.G. MLLER, Chief Staff Officer, and CDR B.J. HACKENSON, Logistics Officer, COMCB PAC, arrived at Camp Haines to make a management inspection. 3 JUL Camp Evans received three 22mm rocket rounds at No rounds anded within Camp Haines. 8 JUL NMCB FOUR Security personne fired M79 rounds at personne outside the perimeter wire at 240 with negative resuts. 0 JUL The MCB FOUR pipeine crew came under sniper fire at YO aong Route #. No personne were injured. 2 JUL The MCB FOUR pireine crew dug up an enemy panted mine with a ditcher at YD aong Route #. The mine did not expode. 6 JUL The dedication ceremony for Camp Haines was hed with RADM J.V. BARTLETT, Commander, THRD Nava Construction Brigade, as guest speaker. The camp was dedicated in honor of EOC John C. HANES who was kied during MCB FOUR's 967 depoyment to Danang, RVN. 27 JUL The MCB TEN predepoyment party arrived at Camp Haines. ncuded in the party were CDR D.A. BARLEY, CO USN MCB TEN. LCDR D. KENN, Suppy Officer, LCDR L.C. STRUTHERS, Operations Officer, and LT J.M. SMTH, Apha Company Commander. 29 JUL CDR D.A. BARTLEY, CO USN MCB TEN, LCDR L.C. STRUTHERS, Operations Officer, and LT J.M. SMTH, Apha Company Commander, departed Camp Haines. 30 JUL LCDR D. KENN, Suppy Officer, MCB TEN,departed Camp Haines. 3 AUG At YD on Route #, an ARYN truck detonated a mine 00 yards from the MCB FOUR pipeine crew. One Vietnamese aborer working on the pipeine crew received minor wounds. 0 AUG The 780 foot timber bridge constructed by MCB FOUR at An Lo, Repubic of Vietnam, was dedicated. 5

7 6 AUG MCB FOUR was notified that a personne serving with MCB FOUR from 30 January 967 to 3 Juy 967 whie the Battaion was under OPCON of the THRTETH Nava Construction Regiment are author i zed to wear the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. 20 AUG CDR W.L. W LSON, Operations Officer, COMCBPAC, LCDR G.R. GLMORE, Prospective Pans/ Training Officer, COMCBPAC, and LT J.L. HENLEY, Administration Officer, COMCBPAC, arrived at Camp Hai nes_ for the annua MCB FOUR Operations and Administration nspection. 2 AUG The COMCBPAC i nspection party departed Camp Haines. 22 AUG Camp Evans received five rocket rounds, none of which anded within Camp Haines. FOUR was in Defense Condition r from 923 to NMCB 24 AUG At 030, the area around the new timber bridge at An Lo, YD , received from 80 to 00-60mm mortar rounds, No Seabee personne were i njured and no damage was done to the new timber bridge. At 245, MCB FOUR went into Defense Condition when Camp Evans received incoming mortar rounds. No rounds anded within Camp Haines. 28 AUG 3 AUG MGEN FORSYTHE, Commanding Genera, ST Air Cavary Divi sion, arrived at Camp Haines for a briefing on MCB FOUR construction efforts in the Camp Evans area. At 040, t he Camp Evans area received incoming mortar rounds. in Camp Haines and no MCB FOUR personne were injured.. None of the rounds anded LT H.F. GOHRBAND, J R., SC, USN, arrived at Camp Haines to conduct the Annua Suppy nspection. 6 SEP By 600, Camp Haines had received 25 i nches of rain over the previ ous 62 hour period. 8 SEP 5 SEP At 920, Camp Evans received incoming 22mm rocket ounds, some of whi ch impacted at the airfied. No.r ounds anded in Camp Haines. No MCB FOUR personne were injured, athough an MCB FOUR night crew was working on the airstrip very near the impact points. Mr. Car MAROHN, Technica Representative from the Air Logistics Corporation, Pasadena, Caifornia, arrived at Camp Haines. Mr. MAROHN supervised the instaation of MO-MAT test sections which are designed to function as the water barrier between sections of t he Camp Evans runway subgrade an4 the AM2 auminum runway matting. 8 SEP RADM A.C. HUSBAND, Chief of Civi Engineers, and party visited Camp Haines. : ',,.,' :; 9 SEP CDR R.M. FLUSS, CO USN MCB FOUR, accepted the Navy Unit Commendation for MCB FOUR during ceremonies hed at the THRTETH Nava Construction Regiment, Danang. MCB FOUR was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for the Battaion' s construction efforts under OPCON of the THRTETH Nava Construction Regiment from 30 January 967 to 3 Juy SEP The MCB FOUR Advance Party departed Phu Bai on a C-8 aircraft for t he Construction Battaion Center, Port Hueneme, Caifornia. 24 SEP At 95, Camp Evans received 8 i ncoming 22mm rocket rounds, none of which anded in Camp Haines. No MCB FOUR personne were injured. 26 SEP RADM J.V. BARTLET, COM3NCB, MGEN BRADLEY and CAPT A.W. WALTON, JR., COM32NCR visited Camp Haines. 30 SEP MGEN G.. FORSYTHE, CG ST Air Cavary Division, and CAPT A.W. WALTON, JR., COM32NCR, participated in the opening ceremony for the Camp Evans Ai rfied. The 2900 LF AM2 auminum matting runway, two AM2 auminum matting turn arounds and the M8A stee matting parking apron were soi cemented and matted by MCB FOUR. 3 OCT The first members of the MCB TEN Advance Party arrived at Camp Haines. 4 OCT The BEEP began. 6

8 5 ocr The advanced sea shipment of MCB FOUR gear departed Danang, RVN, on the Sea Train Porto Rico. 7 ocr The BEEP was competed. 22 OCT The first MCB FOUR Main Body fight departed Camp Haines for Danang on C-30 aircraft. /"'_ 2. 3 OCT ' t 0030, the first Main Body fight departed the Danang AFB on a DC- 8 aircraft for the ( - Construction Battaion Center, Port Hueneme, Caifornia. FORSYTHE spoke at the ceremony expressing his appreciation for the work MCB FOUR had accompished for the First.Air Cavary Division at Camp Evans and stating that he was very much ooking forward to working with MCB TEN. 27 ocr The ast Main Body fight departed Danang AFB on a DC-8 aircraft for the Construction Battaion Center, Port Hueneme, Caifornia. MAJOR PROBLEMS MCB FOUR depoyed to Vietnam seven weeks before the schedued depoyment date. By necessity, the eary mount-out had adverse effects on homeport training and.ogistic support. These probems wi pe discussed further in the report. 7
