Established in 1861, we are the longest operating maritime college in the UK - and our reputation is unsurpassed. Our high-quality training programmes cover the entire spectrum of marine education and nautical sciences. Our Pre-Cadetship programme is intended for those eventually seeking a cadetship with a sponsoring company but have yet to successfully secure a place. The programme will provide the knowledge and competencies required to be successful in securing a full Cadetship. Our Officer Cadetships provide a fully financed solution to Higher Education, resulting in a Foundation Degree, HND or HNC. Students can progress further to top up their training to an honours degree through the close support of one of our partner universities. 7 The Industry With a long and proud maritime heritage, the UK remains a major force in the global maritime industry. In a world where over 90 per cent of goods are transported by sea, seafarers continue to play a vital role in our lives. The Merchant Navy is the name of the international commercial shipping industry. It is not a single entity but comprises of a large number of shipping companies, who in combination transport trade around the globe. These companies recruit civilians as crew (officers and ratings) who are known as merchant seafarers. A career at sea is for skilled and motivated individuals, who can expect to enjoy a well-paid, professionally challenging and adventurous lifestyle. The officer cadet experience is like no other. 8 Navigation Officer 06 Choose your role There are a wide range of career opportunities to choose from in the Merchant Navy. The marine operations, or deck department is responsible for the safe navigation and operation of a vessel at sea and in port. Every day, Officers have to make decisions that could affect the safety of the ship and its customers and crew, so an ability to keep calm under pressure is vital to the role. It s important to be a good team member who inspires confidence in others. You will be interested in technology and have good mathematical, written and verbal skills. Overall confidence, enthusiasm and self-reliance are essential. Navigation Officers are responsible for passage planning, the safe navigation of the vessel, cargo loading and discharge, ship stability, communications and the maintenance of hull and deck equipment. The ship s captain, or Master, is in overall command with ultimate responsibility for the safety of the crew, vessel, cargo and environment. 9 Marine Engineering Officer A Marine Engineering Officer is responsible for the running and maintenance of a ship s engine room. They operate and maintain all the propulsion, power generation, lifts, refrigeration plant, pumping and ventilation systems. Those training for this position must be practically minded, resourceful and have a real interest in mechanical and electrical systems. Along with good maths and good written and verbal communication skills, they will be willing to learn about new technology and adapt new skills. Qualified Senior Engineering Officers lead and supervise a team of professional engineering personnel at sea and in port. From there on, they can set a course to become a Chief Engineer, the highest position in the engineering department. Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) With the increased use of modern technologies at sea, demand for ETOs to manage and maintain the sophisticated range of electrical, electronic and engineering equipment at sea is rapidly growing. The Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) monitors and maintains, maximising the operational safety and efficiency of the vessel. ETOs can develop their careers along a professional electrical and electronic engineering pathway, which can lead to the rank of Chief Electro-Technical Officer, Chief Technical Officer or Electrical Superintendent, depending on the company they work for. 14 Pre-Cadetship 12 Pre- Cadetship Our Pre-Cadetship programmes are a great foundation for those wanting to go onto sponsored cadetships. The Pre-Cadetship programme is offered in both engineering and marine operations (deck) pathways. The programme is intended for those eventually seeking a cadetship with a sponsoring company but who have yet to secure a place. The programme provides the knowledge and competencies required to be successful in securing a full cadetship. Students will develop a variety of skills through visits, classroom learning and practical sessions, and be encouraged to grow fully as individuals to develop excellent interpersonal and communication skills. This is a one year full-time programme. Students can then progress on to the next level or into sponsorship. I have been on lots of cruises which is where the interest initially started, I would love to have a career with cruise lines. Where do you see yourself in five years time? 17 David Peacock,17 It is an extremely useful course and is also very interesting. Redcar, Engine Why were you inspired to pursue a career at sea? It s in the blood I think. My brothers currently work as second engineers, and my father is a retired superintendent. I have also been on a few cruise ships and other vessels and really enjoyed it. How are you finding the Pre-Cadetship so far? I am really enjoying the Pre-Cadetship; not only is it an extremely useful course but it is also very interesting. Why did you choose a Pre-Cadetship? I chose the Pre-Cadetship because it gives me a very good insight into engineering and helps me move forward to the ETO Cadetship course. Where do you see yourself in five years time? In five years, I hope to be qualified, working on a cruise ship as an ETO with a lot of experience under my belt. What would you say to someone considering a career at sea? I really enjoy my job and the perks that come with it. I would advise anyone interested in a career at sea to look in to the huge range of jobs available and what the roles involve.

20 What the experts say Merchant Navy Training Board The Merchant Navy Training Board welcomes the exciting new Pre-Cadetship course at South Shields Marine School. We recognise that this programme of study will provide an insight into the marine industry and develop both your interpersonal skills and improved English and maths. For those applying for a cadetship in the Merchant Navy, the engineering and nautical experiences on this course, coupled with your academic results, will enable you to show sponsoring companies that you are serious and prepared to succeed. Maritime Skills Alliance The MSA is always pleased to support new initiatives designed to attract and retain new young entrants to the maritime sector. We have identified a continuing need for additional qualified deck and marine engineer officers and this new course provides a route into the sector, which has not previously existed. While the prime aspiration may be to enter the Merchant Navy, completion of the course would open up a range of other opportunities for those interested in both the deck and engineering side. This includes apprenticeships to become qualified to work on fishing vessels, tugs and workboats, or craft operating on rivers and inland waterways and limited distances to sea. Carnival UK Carnival UK (including Cunard and P&O Cruises) welcomes the development of a programme of study that will provide a possible entry route into the Merchant Navy. For those persons who have not yet obtained sponsorship, but who have a desire to embark on a career at sea as a marine engineer or deck officer, this course could enhance both the academic and vocational skills required to achieve their goal. 21 Entry Requirements and Application Medical Requirements Before commencing training, candidates must pass a seafarer medical examination, also known as ENG1 medical. This requires the candidate to meet internationally set standards, including colour and eyesight standards and physical fitness. The examination is also designed to highlight medical conditions which would be difficult to treat or could be aggravated while at sea. Level 2: To enrol on a Level 2 qualification, candidates need four GCSEs grade 5 or C (including English, maths and a science subject) and must also be capable of passing ENG1. Level 3: To enrol on a Level 3 qualification, candidates need to have attained a Level 2 Pre-Cadetship (Level 2 Diploma in Engineering) or have four GCSEs at grade 6 or B (including English, maths and a science). Start Dates The Level 2 Pre-Cadetship programme Starting every September. The Level 3 Pre-Cadetship programme Starting twice a year, in January and September. Course Fees If you are aged 16 to 18 There is no fee. 19 or over and no Level 3 qualification Then you may be able to study for free. 22 Moving on to a cadetship 20 Cadetship Officer cadet training programmes consist of a number of training phases, alternating between time at college and time at sea. 27 Stuart Good, 33 What did you do before your Cadetship? I work for a blue chip company as a project manager. It was a desk job and came with a lot of responsibility and pressure, managing 200+ employees and working 50 to 70 hour weeks with limited annual leave. Herefordshire, Deck How are you finding your Cadetship so far? This year has exceeded all of my expectations. I spent six months at sea over two trips and I can t believe the places I have been, the sights I ve seen and the people I ve met. I have learnt a great deal from the college and although the course content can be complex and challenging, especially for me as I have been out of education for such a long time, the lecturers are always willing to help and the college offers good resources to support my studies. Where do you see yourself in five years time? I would like to be working towards my mates ticket within Maersk. What inspired you to pursue a career at sea? After working in Project Management for over 10 years, I began to feel like something was missing from my career and wanted a change. My friend was doing a Pre-Cadetship and introduced me to the TV documentary Mighty Ships. I immediately became interested in this career and started to research it more. The application went in and now here I am. What would you say to someone considering a career at sea? Having seen both sides, working in the rat race and as a cadet with the Merchant Navy, I would highly recommend this career, especially to those deciding on what to do after A Levels. This career will enable you to achieve and learn so much so early on, learning important life skills, rather than working hard for slow progression in an office. It will also enable you to be financially stable early on, which is something that is difficult. Trust me, I know. 28 Scott Walker, 24 North Shields, Engine What did you do before your Cadetship? Before the Cadetship, I studied graphic design at Northumbria University. Graphic design was something I had been studying for a number of years. Although I enjoyed it at school and as a hobby, I couldn t see myself working nine-to-five behind a desk staring at a computer screen for the rest of my life. Did you do a Pre-Cadetship? Yes, the Pre-Cadetship gave me a basic understanding of the maritime industry and what it takes to be a marine engineer. It also helped me brush up on my academic subjects such as maths and English, where I had been out of practise for a while. As the course went on, I gained more knowledge in these academic areas which allowed me to apply for the Foundation Degree course. The course also gave me better opportunities in terms of sponsorship and the ability to choose which company I wanted to work for. How are you finding your Cadetship so far? The Cadetship is going well and flying by, I am almost half way through the course now. I m looking forward to phase four and getting back to sea, where I will be joining the MS Queen Elizabeth. What inspired you to pursue a career at sea? Having a family friend who works at sea definitely gave me an insight into the kind of lifestyle working away can provide. Once I had realised that I didn t want a nineto-five job, I started to research marine engineering in more depth. The additional benefits of travelling the world on a cruise liner and doing something rewarding inspired me change my career path at the time. Where do you see yourself in five years time? In five years time, I would like to be on a sunny beach somewhere in the Caribbean working as a Second Engineering Officer on board one of P&O s brand new cruise liners. What would you say to someone considering a career at sea? Why consider anything else when you can travel the world with an abundance of opportunities, meeting new people on a daily basis whilst being paid for half a year s work? 33 Accommodation On-campus accommodation is an integral part of the cadet lifestyle. All phase one cadets can move into our purpose-built halls of residence. This gives new cadets the chance to meet each other and experience living away from home before they go away to sea. Comprising of 204 single study bedrooms, our halls of residence are conveniently situated within our campus and combine catered accommodation with easy access. The halls are also easily accessible to a wide range of local facilities in South Tyneside. Regular bus and Metro train connections are within a short walking distance, connecting to the cities of Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham, and to Newcastle International Airport. All rooms are centrally heated and equipped with handwash basins, and 60 of our rooms have en-suite facilities. The rooms also include free wi-fi, utility bills, cleaning and college gym membership. For non-ensuite rooms, showers and toilets are located on each floor. General facilities include common rooms (with TV, microwave and kettle), two fully fitted kitchens, a communal television lounge, after-hours study rooms (with whiteboard, large desks and computers), and a computer suite (with 24-hour access). Residents have free access to the 1861 Lifestyle Centre located close by their accommodation facilities. A member of staff is available 24-hoursa-day to assist students and provide support where required. Please note: We have a limited number of self-catering rooms. We are unable to offer married quarter basis and the address cannot be used for VISA applications.
