4 About Us About us What we do We offer high-quality course provision for the maritime industries, to meet the growing international demand for crew, officers and captains who are trained to the highest professional standards. We also provide a range of opportunities for professional and personal development up to master s degree level. The academy has internationally recognised certification programmes for deck (navigation), marine engineering and marine electro-technical officers, from initial entry as an officer cadet up to master (captain), chief engineer and chief electro-technical officer level. We also provide a full range of short safety courses (mandatory and non-mandatory) to all maritime personnel for the development of key skills such as fire fighting and sea survival. Continuous professional development modules are offered for more experienced officers. The academy pioneered the use of bridge, engine room and liquid cargo operations simulators for higher level training, while our specialist ship handling training facility is one of only a few major centres in the world. 5 About Us Our training partners Southampton Solent University delivers worldrenowned yacht and boat design degree programmes, a suite of international maritime studies courses and a range of specialist support services. Our training partners compliment the range of training provision for the superyacht industry. Da Gama Maritime Da Gama Maritime provide support to commercial yacht crew in a number of areas designed to assist in maintaining their safety at sea through professional onboard crew training and an unsurpassed level of navigation management. Interior Yacht Services Interior Yacht Services (IYS) provides Luxury Hospitality Training through Warsash Superyacht Academy for interior and hospitality crew on board luxury yachts and cruise ships. All the courses are accredited through the Professional Yachting Association s (PYA) GUEST programme, the Guidelines for Unified Excellence in Service Training. Marine Matters Marine Matters is a dedicated RYA training centre conveniently located within one mile of the academy. It specialises in the professional delivery of training required for the superyacht and commercial workboat sector. MedAire/International SOS MedAire is part of the world s largest remote medical advisory and support company (International SOS) and has specialised teams supporting the international luxury yacht sector worldwide. Their on-board medical training and specialist medical consultancy provide vital assistance to crews in updating and maintaining medical knowledge and skills. Regs4ships Ltd Now part of ChartCo Ltd, Regs4ships specialise in the provision of digital regulations, technical information and International Maritime Organization (IMO) material to ships and the shore infrastructure. The directors and many of the company's staff are ex-mariners and flag state surveyors, and ensure that vessels are operating safely, efficiently and within the regulations. 3

6 Our Facilities Our facilities The top training destination As the UK s centre of maritime excellence, the range, scale and quality of training and support facilities offered by the academy for students in the maritime industry is unmatched worldwide. Our impressive 17-acre waterside campus offers comfortable on-site accommodation and a range of modern educational and recreational facilities. Students also have access to all the resources and benefits offered by Southampton Solent University, including its innovative virtual campus and online learning environment. Bridge simulators/ecdis Suite Gain first-hand experience in our Full Mission Bridge Simulator, with its full panoramic views and an extensive range of training scenarios, or in one of our five multipurpose bridge simulators. Our two ECDIS suites are fully equipped providing type-specific training on a range of manufacturer s equipment such as Kongsberg and Transas. Ship Handling Centre Timsbury Lake, near Romsey, is the location of one of only a few major ship handling centres in the world. We offer a fleet of nine scaled ship models which replicates 12 vessel types. The centre provides port authorities and shipping companies with invaluable specialised training and assessment for their pilots, captains and senior deck officers. Our dedicated ten-acre lake facility attracts mariners from across the globe, to practise and develop their ship handling skills through trial manoeuvres in a controlled environment. Full Mission Engine Room Simulator Launched in October 2012, our state-of-the-art Full Mission Engine Room Simulator is designed for teambased resource management training. It includes a suite of rooms comprising an engine control room, an emergency switchboard room, a high voltage (11KVA) room containing an HV breaker and control panel, and an instructor station. 4

7 Our Facilities Liquid Cargo Operations Simulator (LICOS) This facility provides real-time simulation of the process flow control system used in the storage and transfer of hazardous bulk liquid cargoes from shore to ship, ship to shore and ship to ship. Through L3 'WISE Intelligent System Technology' we are able to replicate real time effects of all operational issues.we use an MPRI simulator approved by DNV as a Class A maritime simulator. The simulator fleet consists of the following models: membrane LNG, spherical LNG, fully refrigerated LPG and double hull crude oil/products carrier, all of which are based on real vessels. Engineering workshops The workshops include extensive facilities for bench/hand fitting and the use of machine tools, welding, marine power plant and electrical maintenance. There is a specialised control laboratory for electronic navigational systems operations and the maintenance of radars, navigational aids and control systems. In addition, we have laboratories for thermodynamics, mechanical and control engineering experiments. Survival craft facilities We operate a range of survival craft and different launching scenarios to meet international safety training standards. The launch and recovery of survival craft including lifeboats, fast rescue boats and rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) takes place on our purpose-built pier head facility and floating pontoons. A vertical net escape chute is also fitted for offshore training courses. We utilise a pool facility for STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) in water tuition, and a variety of life rafts and survival equipment. A Helicopter Underwater Escape Trainer (HUET) is available, as well as a winch facility for simulated rescue by helicopter. Fire School Our purpose-built fire fighting training facility provides a realistic environment in which students can learn the vital techniques of fighting fires at sea. The Fire School contains a three-storey steel ship/offshore module for live fire training, utilising real solid and liquid fuels in creating a safe yet hot and realistic environment in which to train. Additional facilities include helicopter fire fighting and rescue unit, a full breathing apparatus training unit with a simulated double bottom tank, fire pit, fire screen and other devices for simulating a variety of fire types. Radio Communications Centre We offer two radio communications suites, each containing a range of live installations for students. In addition, a computer room has sufficient simulators for every student, with a further two classrooms available for the underpinning theory lectures. Three smaller rooms are dedicated to distress scenario exercises. Seamanship Centre The Seamanship Centre offers an excellent range of facilities in which students can develop their skills and understanding of practical seamanship to Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) standard. Equipment ranges from pilot ladders and mooring arrangements to scale models of derricks and hatches. The centre provides an ideal environment for practical and effective learning. Library and IT suite The academy has one of the biggest nautical libraries in the UK, which also houses an IT resource centre. Students have access to all the facilities offered by Southampton Solent University s main library, plus mycourse, the virtual learning environment, and SOL, the Solent Online Learning platform. Accommodation Our selection of campus and Southampton-based residences offers a choice of single and twin study bedrooms, flats and guest house accommodation. All rooms are safe, secure and have onlne access. Catering We have a 120-seat restaurant and a fully licensed bar with games and a Costa Coffee outlet. All meals are prepared on campus by our talented team of chefs using only fresh and local ingredients. Sports and leisure Our purpose-built watersports centre is RYA-approved and delivers practical courses in yachting, dinghy and keelboat sailing, power boating and jet ski proficiency. We also have a fully equipped gymnasium with personal fitness trainers, boxing, Zumba and pilates, as well as an extensive range of sports equipment and bicycles for use by students. 5

8 Our Staff Our staff Our teaching expertise is highly respected internationally, attracting professional seafarers from around the globe to our training courses and programmes. We manage over 10,000 student enrolments each year and employ over 120 highly qualified and experienced maritime lecturers and technical instructors to ensure that our students receive first-class teaching provision. The large majority of our staff members are current or former seafarers, with specialist knowledge from marinerelated industries such as commercial maritime, naval architecture, maritime law, the Royal Navy and the offshore industry. Their professional expertise is fully supported by our policy of continuous professional development and enhancement of teaching and technical skills. Senior management Professor John Chudley Provost, Warsash Maritime Academy John joined Southampton Solent University in 2013 and oversees the strategic development of the academy. Previously John was Head of the Department of Mechanical and Marine Engineering at Plymouth University and Director of Research and Innovation. Prior to joining Solent University, John was director of the National Apprenticeships Service and has a strong commitment to vocational education and higher level skills. John Bazley Head of Academic and Certification Programmes MSc, FRIN, FHEA, MNI John overseas the academic accredited course provision at the academy. John spent 17 years in the Royal Navy as a warfare officer specialising in navigation before completing an MSc in Applied Navigation and joining Warsash in John represents the academy on a number of maritime industry and professional bodies including the Merchant Navy Training Board Technical Committee. Nigel Hare Head of Maritime Professional Development MA, MRIN Nigel joined Warsash in 2014 and manages the effective planning, development and delivery of maritime non-accredited short courses. A 33-year career in the Royal Navy culminated in being responsible for setting policy in navigation and seamanship across the Fleet and finally serving as the Queen s Harbour Master in Portsmouth and completing an MA in Business Management Nigel is a member of the RIN and Chairman of the Navigation and Direction Officer's Association. Russell Gray Programme Group Leader MSc Russell joined the academy in 1995 as a senior lecturer working for the Maritime and Offshore Safety Section, having initially served at sea as a deck officer aboard a variety of vessel types. As an ISM Auditor with NEBOSH qualifications, Russell has undertaken a number of consultancy roles for the academy. In 2003, Russell was appointed as Principal Lecturer Maritime Training, with responsibility for managing maritime and offshore safety resources. He has since taken over the responsibility for the Fire School and Ship Handling Centre operations. Steve Window Programme Group Leader (Ship Simulation) VR, MSc, CMgr, FCMI, FHEA, AFRIN Steve spent 21 years in the Royal Navy as a warfare officer and joined the academy as a senior lecturer in August Steve served as the Queen s Harbourmaster at Portland, was NATO maritime advisor to the Defence Ministries of the Baltic States, Head of Royal Navy diving training and remains a member of the RN Reserve. Steve was appointed as Programme Group Leader in July 2015, and is responsible for all bridge simulation and GMDSS training. 6

9 Our Staff Mark Bee Programme Group Leader (Management, Petrochem, Medical) MSc, FIMarEST, MCIPD, Mark is a qualified engineer who served in the Royal Navy for over 20 years in a variety of ships and submarines. After leaving the Navy, Mark spent ten years as a training manager at a maritime training school before joining the academy as a senior lecturer in Mark has overall management responsibility for the management, medical and petrochemical/licos course delivery sections at Warsash. John Onslow Programme Group Leader (Deck) MSc, Master Mariner, PGCTLHE, PGCHEP John joined the academy in 1997 as a senior lecturer in the petrochemical section before moving to Professional Studies in 2000, and became principal lecturer in John spent his sea-going career as a deck officer serving on a variety of ship types but specialising in the tanker trade. He has co-authored a text book on oil tanker operations and represents the academy on the deck sub-group of the IAMI. Keith Hopkins Programme Group Leader (Maritime and Offshore Safety) Keith joined the academy in 2005 as a senior lecturer in our offshore safety section, and in July 2014 was appointed to manage the maritime and offshore safety section of the School of Maritime Training. Keith has overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of the section s operations and continues to teach on a range of offshore safety courses. Nick Ball Programme Group Leader (Marine Engineering) Nick joined the academy initially as a Senior Lecturer before becoming Principal Lecturer in Nick s maritime career began as a marine engineer officer in the RFA, before retiring as the Head of the Technical Branches of the service. Nick joined Warsash in 2005 after a short spell as a consultant to Rolls-Royce Naval Marine. Nick represents the academy on the engineering sub-group of the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI). Warsash is a maritime academy unlike any other. As an engineer, it is great to be able to learn from chief engineers who have been in the maritime business for many years. 12 Deck (navigation) qualifications Deck (navigation) qualifications Our UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)-approved training programmes for deck officers and ratings are jobspecific and allow you to build professionalism, earning potential and capability to progress quickly in their careers. Competency training is delivered in our purpose-built bridge simulators which replicate the handling of several vessel types. Some modules may be delivered through on board training or in overseas locations. Warsash has approval from the MCA to offer all course modules and programmes required to obtain internationally recognised Certificates of Competency (CoC) at officer of the watch, chief mate and captain (master) levels. In addition to certification programmes, the necessary associated MCA-approved Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) auxiliary short courses can be completed at the academy. 13 Deck (navigation) qualifications i For your information All of our unlimited certification programmes for officer of the watch (OOW) and chief mate incorporate the relevant Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training (NAEST) and Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM) courses, as well as MCA Signals and MCA Orals preparation. 14 Deck (navigation) qualifications Photograph courtesy of P&O Cruises New entrants/ pathway to certification i Progression charts Deck Officer Under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), all new entrants to the maritime industries are required to complete STCW Basic Safety Training before joining a vessel. For those wishing to progress their career from initial entry level to become a deck (navigation) officer, the officer of the watch is responsible for the safety of the vessel, the crew and its passengers during the period of his or her watch at sea or in port. It is a critical role which requires a substantial amount of training and sea experience. 15 Deck (navigation) qualifications i STCW 2010 ( Manila Amendments ) The STCW Convention 1978 has been amended by the 2010 Manila Amendments and contains new training requirements. Between 1 July 2013 and 1 January 2017 (as appropriate), all seafarers will be required to undertake additional training in compliance with these Manila Amendments and hold the requisite certification: Officer of the Watch (Yachts, less than 3000GT) candidates will be required to complete a five-day Efficient Deck Hand course. Officer of the Watch candidates (Unlimited or Yachts) will be required to complete a three-day Human Element, Leadership and Management Operational Level course. Chief Mate candidates (Unlimited or Yachts) will be required to complete a five-day Human Element, Leadership and Management Level course. All deck officers (including yachts) will need to undertake a five-day generic Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) course before either applying for (or revalidating) their UK Certificate of Competency. Mandatory security training is required for all crew (as appropriate), including Proficiency in Security Awareness, Security Familiarisation Training (conducted on board the vessel), Proficiency in Designated Security Duties, and Proficiency as Ship Security Officer. Updating training Under the STCW 2010 requirements updating training for the courses listed below have to be undertaken every five years. Seafarers revalidating their Certificate of Competency (CoC) after 1 January 2017 will be required to submit documentary evidence of having completed MCA-approved updating training within the last five year. Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques Updated Proficiency in Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention Updated Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats) Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting Updated Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats. Basic safety training essential training for seafarers STCW requires all seafarers to receive familiarisation and basic safety training or instruction in accordance with Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. The minimum requirements for familiarisation and basic safety training are contained within our Basic Safety Training Week (BSTW) and meet the appropriate standards of competence. The courses are scheduled over one week, normally from Monday to Friday, or they can be booked individually at separate times. The five courses that make up the minimum STCW familiarisation and basic safety training requirements are: Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting Personal Survival Techniques Elementary First Aid Proficiency in Security Awareness. The training courses listed in the BSTW are a requirement for holders of a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore or Ocean looking to work towards the MCA STCW Master (Yacht) less than 200GT and OOW (Yachts) less than 500GT. These training requirements also include masters and deck officers in workboats of over 24 metres and less than 500GT. The academy provides us with first-class training. 16 Deck (navigation) qualifications Entry level STCW Basic Safety Training Week Training towards: Deck Hand / Officer of the Watch Course duration: 5 days The minimum requirements for familiarisation and basic safety training are contained within our Basic Safety Training Week (BSTW) and meet the appropriate standard of competence in Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. The five courses include: STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques, Elementary First Aid and Security Awareness. Efficient Deck Hand Training towards: Deck Hand / Officer of the Watch Course duration: 5 days A theoretical and practical course that gives an understanding of shipboard organisation and operations, pilot ladders and means of access, cargo work, safety and seamanship, including knots, splicing, and whipping and seizing. Officer of the Watch Unlimited Certification Deck Cadet Higher National Diploma Programme Training towards: OOW (Unlimited) STCW A-II/1 Course duration: 3 years The academy offers a full deck officer cadet programme by a Higher National Diploma (HND) route, leading to the award of an MCA deck officer s Certificate of Competency (STCW II/I OOW), and an HND in Nautical Science. HND graduates may progress to the BSc (Hons) Marine Operations Management after gaining further industrial experience. Officer of the Watch (HNC/Examination Route) For Experienced Seafarers/Yacht Personnel Training towards: OOW (Unlimited) STCW A-II/1 Course duration: 6 months plus professional STCW courses and examinations This course enables students to achieve STCW officer of the watch certification by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) examination route. Candidates will receive tuition and assessment in HNC (Nautical Science) units, and NAEST and HELM (Operational Level) courses, as well as preparation for the SQA examinations in Navigation, and Stability and Operations, and the MCA Signals and Oral examinations. Note: Candidates with at least 36 months of sea time on yachts over 24 metres will be eligible to enroll on this course. Deck Cadet Foundation Degree Programme Training towards: OOW (Unlimited) STCW A-II/1 Course duration: 3 years The academy offers a full deck officer cadet programme by a degree route, leading to the award of an MCA deck officer s Certificate of Competency (STCW II/I OOW), a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Marine Operations and a direct top-up pathway to BSc (Hons) Marine Operations Management. 14

17 Deck (navigation) qualifications Chief Mate Unlimited Certification Chief Mate (Post FD Route) For officers who followed the FD cadetship to initial certification Training towards: Chief Mate (Unlimited) STCW A-II/2 Course duration: 10 weeks This course enables students who have successfully completed a deck officer cadetship via the Foundation Degree (FdSc) route to achieve Chief Mate certification. It includes completion of NAEST (M) and HELM (Management Level) courses, as well as preparation for the MCA Oral examination. 18 Deck (navigation) qualifications i Important ECDIS information STCW 2010 All deck officers serving on UK-flagged vessels using ECDIS as the primary means of navigation (this includes all ships where the carriage of ECDIS is mandatory) must have completed generic ECDIS training, as per MCA guidance in MIN 503. It further advises that type-specific ECDIS training is required when ECDIS is the primary means of navigation. The academy currently has Kongsberg and Transas ECDIS equipment, with our instructors certified by the manufacturers, and we are looking to extend our capabilities further in due course. All deck officers applying for a new UK CoC, or revalidating, must include an ECDIS certificate with their application. If an ECDIS certificate is not included with a revalidation application, the CoC will have the following limitation: From 1 January 2017 this certificate is not valid for service on ships fitted with ECDIS. Use of electronic navigational aids such as GPS, AIS, ECDIS and navigational instruments are explained, with an emphasis on Radar and ARPA. Note: There is a written examination at the end of the second week. You develop and practice navigation and collision avoidance skills in our multi-purpose bridge simulator. Successful assessment of competency is necessary before issue of a simulator course certificate. Master (Yachts) Seamanship and Meteorology Training towards: Master Yachts less than 500GT/3,000GT Course duration: 5 days This course includes five sections covering seamanship, navigation, including watchkeeping procedures, meteorology, MARPOL, including IMO conventions concerning safety of life and environmental protection, and Code of Safe Working Practices. Master (Yachts) Stability Training towards: Master Yachts less than 500GT/3,000GT Course duration: 5 days This course covers the basic principles of hydrostatics, hull form and static and initial stability. It also includes the interpretation of curves of statical stability, ships stability data and calculations involving loading and shifting of weights, dry docking, longitudinal stability and basic calculations. There are three clear pathways for engineering personnel. For students aged 16 and above, there is the officer cadetship progressing to officer of the watch via a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma/Certificate pathway. The second route enables experienced merchant seafarers to progress from rating to officer certification, via EOOW, second engineer and chief engineer programmes. For the commercial yacht industry, the academy also offers a third progression route, leading to Chief Engineer (Yachts) via a series of approved courses. These are known as Y4 less than 200GT to Y2 less than 3,000GT, and are modular programmes for experienced seafarers and are structured to offer continuous development. For those wishing to progress their career from initial entry level to become an engineering or electro-technical officer, a substantial amount of training and sea experience is required. The minimum requirements for familiarisation and basic safety training are contained within our Basic Safety Training Week (BSTW) and meet the appropriate standards of competence. The courses are scheduled over one week, normally from Monday to Friday, or they can be booked individually at separate times. Seafarers to be employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part of the ship s complement with designated safety or pollution prevention duties shall complete the five STCW basic safety training courses, which include: Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting Personal Survival Techniques Elementary First Aid Proficiency in Security Awareness. 26 Engineering and marine electro-technical qualifications i STCW 2010 ( Manila Amendments ) HELM, HV and Updating Training The STCW Convention 1978 has been amended by the 2010 Manila Amendments and contains new training requirements. Between 1 July 2013 and 1 January 2017 (as appropriate), all seafarers will be required to undertake additional training in compliance with these Manila Amendments and hold the requisite certification: Engineer Officer of the Watch candidates (Unlimited) will be required to complete a three-day Human Element, Leadership and Management Operational Level course. Second/Chief Engineer candidates (Unlimited) will be required to complete a five-day Human Element, Leadership and Management Management Level course Chief Engineer (Yacht) candidates (Y4 and Y3) will be required to complete a three-day Human Element, Leadership and Management Operational Level course. Chief Engineer (Yacht) candidates (Y2 and Y1) will be required to complete a five-day Human Element, Leadership and Management Management Level course. Before 1 January 2017 all engineering and electrotechnical officers (Unlimited or Yachts) must have undertaken High Voltage Operational Level training before they can serve on a vessel with electrical systems of 1KV and above. Mandatory security training is required for all crew (as appropriate), including Proficiency in Security Awareness, Security Familiarisation Training (conducted on board the vessel), Proficiency in Designated Security Duties, and Proficiency as Ship Security Officer. Updating Training Under the STCW 2010 requirements updating training for the courses listed below have to be undertaken every five years. Seafarers revalidating their Certificate of Competency (CoC) after 1 January 2017 will be required to submit documentary evidence of having completed MCA-approved updating training within the last five years. In addition to any other training requirements specified by the MCA in their Letter of Initial Assessment, you undertake IAMI Engineering Knowledge (EK) written examination and/or the MCA oral exam. You will undertake the requisite MNTB Workshop Skills training (unless exempted by the MCA), which is taught and assessed to the satisfaction of the MCA in accordance with MNTB standards. It is necessary to also pass the initial four STCW safety courses before completing a minimum six months' sea service (including four months' engine room watch keeping duties). Engineer Officer of the Watch MNTB Workshop Skills Training Training towards: EOOW (Unlimited) STCW A-III/1 Course duration: 15 weeks Unless a student is exempted by the MCA due to previous industrial experience/qualifications, an MNTB Workshop Skills Training programme has to be undertaken and passed before initial certification as EOOW can be gained. The training programme covers all marine engineering workshop skills elements, including use and care of hand tools, measuring equipment, drilling machines, centre lathes, vertical milling machines, off-hand grinding machines and welding equipment. The programme then advances to cover maintenance skills, assembly skills and electrical/electronic practice. This programme is normally undertaken as part of one of the EOOW unlimited certification programmes. 26

29 Engineering and marine electro-technical qualifications How to get your Second or Chief Engineer Unlimited Certification There are two clear pathways to senior unlimited certification. Officer cadets currently complete the senior academic elements as part of their foundation degree or HND cadetship programmes. They then undertake Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Engineering Knowledge (EK) examinations at the senior certification stages (for example, General EK plus Motor and/or Steam, as appropriate). Experienced seafarers currently follow an SQA examination pathway after initial Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) certification has been gained. Every student needs to pass appropriate engineering science written examinations at the senior certification stages (for example, Mathematics, Applied Mechanics, Applied Heat, Naval Architecture, Electro-technology and Engineering Drawing). They will then undertake SQA General Engineering Knowledge (EK) and Motor and/or Steam Engineering Knowledge (EK) examinations, as appropriate. All students must also pass the Second Engineer or Chief Engineer MCA Oral examination, as appropriate. Second Engineer Unlimited Certification Second/Chief Engineer Engineering Science (Flexible) For Experienced Seafarers Training towards: Second/Chief Engineer (Unlimited) STCW A-III/2 Course duration: As required The academy has developed a series of flexible learning engineering science courses at chief engineer level (covering associated second engineer requirements too). to undertake a short period of intense revision before sitting the respective SQA examination(s). These programmes will offer a clear pathway of progression for both newcomers and experienced personnel who are looking to advance their careers. The range of training programmes for cruise ships, ferries and superyachts is currently under development and will be publicised in the near future. Our full approval from the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) provides all of the course modules and programmes required by new entrants to the maritime industries or those wishing to obtain an internationally recognised Certificate of Competency (CoC). The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (otherwise known as STCW) is legally binding for signatory countries. The convention gives minimum legal standards for qualifications and training at sea. In short, masters, captains, officers, watchkeepers and crew must all complete differing levels of MCA/STCW training. 38 STCW, safety and security qualifications Basic Safety Training Week (BSTW) Training towards: Entry into maritime industry Course duration: 5 days The requirements for familiarisation and basic safety training are contained within our Basic Safety Training Week (BSTW) and meet the appropriate standard of competence. The courses are scheduled over one week, normally from Monday to Friday, or they can be booked individually at separate times. Seafarers to be employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part of ship s complement with designated safety or pollution prevention duties shall complete the following five basic safety training courses: Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities; Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting; Personal Survival Techniques; Elementary First Aid; and Proficiency in Security Awareness. 39 STCW, safety and security qualifications i STCW 2010 Updating/refresher training The STCW Convention 1978 has been amended by the 2010 Manila Amendments and contains Updated Proficiency training course requirements, for all STCW certificate holders to comply with STCW 2010 code, as follows: Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques Updated Proficiency in Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention Updated Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats) Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting Updated Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats. Updated proficiency training (also known as refresher training) for the above courses has to be undertaken every five years. Seafarers revalidating their CoC after 1 January 2017 will be required to submit documentary evidence of having completed MCA-approved updated proficiency training within the last five years. STCW Section A-VI/1 states that: Seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 2 in basic training shall be required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence, to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A-VI/1-1 and A-VI/1-2. This is a practical one-day fire course involving use of breathing apparatus, hoses, nozzles and extinguishers. Training towards: STCW Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificate Course duration: 2.5 days This 18-hour course is part of the mandatory basic safety training for all seafarers with designated safety duties. It deals with the precautions needed to minimise the risk of fires, how fires are caused and how to extinguish them. It involves 15 hours of practical exercises fighting fires of different types and intensity and 15 hours of classroom based theory and group work. Note: Completion of this course also meets additional criteria set out for Training in Tanker Fire Fighting and a separate certification is issued for this training. Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting Training towards: STCW Proficiency in Updated Advanced Fire Fighting certificate Course duration: 1 day Under the new STCW 2010 requirements for training and certification, holders of an Advanced Fire Fighting certificate will require Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting every five years. This classroom-based course involves review of theory elements of fire on board ships. It offers basic training in safety procedures and accident prevention on board ships. It familiarises new entrants with the employment conditions and working environment of vessels. The course is also available as part of the STCW Basic Safety Training Week. Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats) (PSCRB) Training towards: STCW PSCRB certificate Course duration: 5 days This course prepares personnel who are involved in taking charge of the launching and recovery of survival craft and rescue boats to achieve an appropriate level of competence. A series of practical exercises, using a range of open and enclosed lifeboats and inflatable rescue boats, prepares personnel who are to use them in real-life situations on board ship. Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats Training towards: STCW Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats certificate Course duration: 3 days This course is designed for seafarers who hold a PSC RB certificate and have some experience of using fast rescue boats. The programme offers a combination of classroom theory sessions reinforced with practical fast rescue boat operations on the Solent and at our pool facilities (capsize and righting drills). Updated Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats Training towards: STCW Updated Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats certificate Course duration: 1 day Seafarers holding an existing PFRB qualification are required to complete this updated training course every five years to maintain proficiency under the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments (STCW Section A-VI/2 paragraph 7). This one-day course comprises theory and practical sessions in the classroom, at our pier head facility and in the pool. You are required to be fit enough to undertake practical open water boat handling exercises and in-water capsize drills (swimming pool-based). Tender Operations Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 3 days This course is for seafarers responsible for passenger tender transfer operations and is offered as an on board training package. The course timetable is flexible and can be modified to meet the constraints of training in an operational onboard environment. It includes practical exercises covering launching, recovery operations, boat handling, collision avoidance, navigation, radio and emergency procedures. Crowd Management on Passenger Ships Training towards: STCW certificate Course duration: 0.5 day This course is required for all crews with a duty to assist passengers on board ships. This course is in compliance with STCW Code Section A-V/3. The course provides underpinning knowledge for dealing with crowds in emergencies, rules of crowd management and factors affecting human behaviour in emergencies. 41

Courses are held at the academy in dedicated first aid and medical classrooms, or they may be delivered at alternative locations, including on board ship. A wide variety of equipment is available to enable students to gain hands-on experience with the actual equipment found on board ships. Training is available for all levels of experience, from the one-day Proficiency in Elementary First Aid course for those starting their career at sea, to updating of medical skills for senior officers and bespoke training to suit individual requirements. i First aid refresher training Currently under STCW2010, there is no requirement for first aid training to be updated, however many do choose to repeat first aid training periodically as a way to refresh skills. The Elementary First Aid course allows you to remain competent at applying basic life saving techniques and to understand what to do in an emergency situation. To remain competent at more advanced first aid skills the Proficiency in Medical First Aid course may also be undertaken as a refresher. Proficiency in Elementary First Aid Training towards: STCW Proficiency in Elementary First Aid certificate Course duration: 1 day This course is a combination of theory and practical training for basic first aid and life-saving skills. Upon successful completion, students receive a Proficiency in Elementary First Aid certificate. This course is also available as part of the STCW Basic Safety Training Week. The level of knowledge gained is sufficient to enable the seafarer to take immediate action in the case of injury or illness. Proficiency in Medical Care Training towards: STCW Proficiency in Medical Care certificate Course duration: 5 days This course is for seafarers designated to take charge of medical care on board ship and for those requiring a CoC. On completion of the course, the seafarer will have sufficient knowledge of medical stores and equipment to: diagnose medical problems on board; provide medical care to the sick and injured on board; and participate in co-ordinated schemes for medical assistance to ships. Officers applying for Chief Mate and Master CoC for the first time must hold a PMC certificate not older than five years. Note: Delegates on this course must hold the required pre-requisite qualifications. Note: Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a Proficiency in Medical First Aid certificate. On a UKflagged vessel, the Master and any other person delegated to take charge of medical care must hold a recognised Proficiency in Medical Care or Updated Proficiency in Medical Care certificate issued within the last five years. This course ensures that the seafarer designated to take charge of medical care on board ship is able to maintain and update their skills and knowledge. Seafarers updating their training may also choose to do a full medical care course. Note: For the current academic year we are not offering this course, please contact Admissions and Recruitment Team for further information. Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Training towards: Automated External Defibrillation certificate Course duration: 0.5 day This course provides basic life support training in the use of automated external defibrillators which are commonly used in cases of cardiac arrest. AEDs are increasingly being made available for use by first aiders. It is suitable for anyone, even where no other first aid qualification is held. AED training is now included as standard within the Proficiency in Medical First Aid course at no extra cost. Note: AED is also available as a combined course with Oxygen Administration. It is delivered on board over a six hour period and the course includes a review of on board equipment. The course is designed for the seafarer who may be required to provide casualty care on board ship when oxygen is required; and includes resuscitation skills using AED. On completion an AED and Oxygen Administration certificate will be awarded. Oxygen Administration Training towards: Oxygen Administration certificate Course duration: 0.5 day This course provides a general introduction to the administration of medical oxygen. It is designed for the seafarer or shore-based staff who may be required in their role as first aider to provide casualty care when oxygen is required. It includes resuscitation skills. 46 STCW, Safety and Security Qualifications i ECDIS Training STCW 2010 The Master and all deck officers of UK-flagged vessels (including yachts) which have ECDIS as their primary means of navigation are required to have completed both generic and equipment-specific ECDIS training as per MCA guidance (MIN 503). All deck officers (including yacht officers) applying for a new UK CoC or revalidating must include an ECDIS certificate with their application. If an ECDIS certificate is not included with an application, the CoC will have the following limitation: From 1 January 2017, this certificate is not valid for service on ships fitted with ECDIS (see also MSN 1861). Other flag states have similar requirements, and you are advised to check with them directly if you are unsure. Please visit our website for further guidance on the requirements. Navigation and radio communications Our dedicated Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) suites provide the generic and some typespecific ECDIS training which is a mandatory requirement for deck officers. The new training suites were introduced in 2012 to meet the growth in demand from bridge watchkeeping officers, pilots and other interested personnel. In addition to our generic ECDIS courses detailed on this page, we are also able to provide type-specific training on a range of manufacturers equipment, including Kongsberg and Transas. Navigation Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) Training towards: All deck officers Course duration: 5 days The aim of this course is to train bridge watchkeeping officers and other interested personnel in the safe and efficient use of ECDIS. It follows the recommendations of IMO Model Course 1.27 (the operational use of ECDIS) for generic ECDIS training and is also approved by Transas for type-specific training on the Navi Sailor 4000 ECDIS. It concentrates on the safe and efficient use of ECDIS at sea in a variety of conditions, from ocean passages to pilotages. All new CoC applications must include ECDIS with your application. 44

GMDSS Restricted Operator s Certificate (ROC) Training towards: Officer of the Watch Course duration: 4 days This professional GMDSS qualification is for anyone operating within an A1 area. It covers the practical operation of VHF, DSC, NAVTEX, EPIRBs and SARTs, along with battery and antenna maintenance. Radiotelephone operating procedures are covered for distress, urgency, safety and routine communications. GMDSS General Operator s Certificate (GOC) Training towards: Officer of the Watch and Master 200GT Course duration: 8 days This certificate qualifies the holder to operate a suitably licensed marine radiotelephone, radio telex or satellite mobile earth station in any sea area. This is an intensive course which includes theoretical and practical training using simulator technology and real equipment in our GMDSS laboratory. Shipboard Safety Officer Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 3 days This MCA-approved course is suitable for seafarers who are about to serve, or are already serving, as either safety representatives or safety officers. This training is intended to meet the requirements set out in the Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) Regulations and the Code of Safe Working Practice for Merchant Seafarers (CoSWP). The course addresses both accident prevention and accident investigation. Risk Management and Incident Investigation Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 3 days This course is suitable for all shore-based shipping company managers and all shipboard officers who may be involved in accident or incident investigations and managing risk. The course aims and objectives are directly mapped to the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA) Best Practice Guidance. The course discusses maritime risk management strategy and practice and includes a number of sessions in which delegates gain practical experience in the use of different risk management tools and techniques, including HAZOP, risk-ranking matrices, fault tree and event tree analysis, and the integrated risk management system. The course also introduces the use of the US Coastguard s Risk Analysis Scenario Methodology. Designated Person Ashore (DPA) Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 3 days This MCA-recognised course is developed and delivered in collaboration with the safety and security compliance specialists Regs4ships for newly promoted, deputy and current DPAs to meet requirements for continued professional development. Crowd Management on Passenger Ships Training towards: STCW certification Course duration: 0.5 day This course is required for all crews with a duty to assist passengers on board ships. It is in compliance with STCW Code Section A-V/3. The course provides underpinning knowledge for dealing with crowds in emergencies, rules of crowd management and factors affecting human behaviour in emergencies. Maritime Auditor/Lead Auditor Top-up Route Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 3 days This ISM course is delivered at the academy and has been modularised so that students can now complete the two-day Maritime Internal Auditor course and then return to top-up to achieve ISM/ISO 9000 Lead Auditor certification. The top-up course normally runs from Wednesday to Friday and is a very practical, workshopbased course. 50 STCW, safety and security qualifications Security Since the International Ship and Port Facility Code (ISPS) was agreed at the International Maritime Organization in December 2002, the issue of security amongst shipping and port industries has become of paramount importance, not least due to the rise of piracy in several areas of the world (for example, the Gulf of Aden and the west coast of Africa). As a leading provider of training to the industry, we have developed a range of courses to meet the requirements of the code. Our security courses are formally approved by the MCA. The implementation of European security legislation now adds a further dimension to maritime security. Proficiency in Security Awareness Training towards: STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness certificate Course duration: 0.5 day Under the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments this course must be undertaken by all seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on ships which are required to comply with the ISPS Code. The stand-alone half-day course meets the requirements of Section A-VI/6 paragraph 4 of the amended STCW Code. On completing this training, a seafarer will be able to contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness, recognise security threats and understand the need for, and methods of, maintaining security awareness and vigilance. The course is also delivered at no extra cost when booked as part of the five-day STCW BSTW. Proficiency as Ship Security Officer Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 3 days The threat of attack from pirates and terrorists is a very real one for vessels passing through global waters that are designated as high-risk areas. This course is specifically designed for crew who may encounter a security or safety problem as they transit hostile environments and adverse conditions. The course includes an introduction to the background of the ISPS Code, the roles of the company security officer (CSO) and ship security officer (SSO), security requirements and security administration. It covers security drills, security exercises, crowd management techniques, security protection and emergency preparedness. Company Security Officer Top-Up Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 2 days This two-day course allows holders of a current MCAapproved Ship Security Officer certificate to achieve certification as a Company Security Officer. The course is intended to meet the requirements set out in sections A/2.1.7 and A/II of the ISPS Code and corresponding guidance in Part B of the code and relevant UK legislation. The course builds on security knowledge of shipboard operations and in the interface between ship, operating company and port facility. Proficiency in Designated Security Duties Training towards: STCW certification Course duration: 1 day Under the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments, there are new requirements regarding security training. This course must be undertaken by seafarers engaged on ships who are required to comply with the provisions of the ISPS Code, and who have designated duties under the ship s security plan. This training meets the requirements of Section A-VI paragraphs 6 8 of the amended STCW Code. On completing this training, a seafarer will be able to maintain the conditions set out in a ship security plan, recognise security risks and threats, undertake regular security inspections and properly use security equipment and systems. The design and development of this innovative ten-acre lake training facility has successfully integrated over 30 years of scale model operating expertise. Combined with a comprehensive understanding of the maritime industry s needs, we are able to deliver world-leading facilities and programmes. Formal Assessment of Ship Handling Training towards: Master/Deck Officer/Pilot Course duration: 0.5 day The option of a half-day formal assessment of competence can be undertaken for companies or individuals on request, following completion of a scheduled ship handling course. This is carried out on a Friday afternoon after the training course. Assessment is made against set performance criteria and based solely on observations made on the scaled model assessment exercises at that time. Ship Handling and Emergency Procedures Training towards: Master/Deck Officer/Pilot Course duration: 3 days This course meets the principles laid down in IMO Resolution A960 Section 5. The aim is to enable students to develop their skills and understanding of the principles and practices of ship handling, with an emphasis on emergency procedures and manoeuvres, including steering, engine and bow thruster failures. Intensive practical exercises are supported by a programme of lectures to suit individual student needs; if required, this may include interaction and escort towage principles using radio-controlled tugs. 55 Ship Handling Centre Offshore Oil Operations Training towards: Master/Deck Officer Course duration: 4.5 days This course covers the handling of rig supply vessels, with specific emphasis on twin screw manoeuvring and specialised operations applicable to the supply boat industry. The course also includes the practical demonstration of techniques for the positioning and towage of jack-up rigs. These operations are specific to the oil industry and include towing barges and picking up anchor buoys. This course benefits mariners new to the oil industry as it provides basic grounding before joining operations at sea. Involving approximately 20 per cent classroom time and 80 per cent on the lake, the course can be tailored to clients requirements. Ship Handling Appreciation Training towards: Senior shore management Course duration: 2 days This course is aimed at personnel involved in marine operations, perhaps in the shipping, legal or insurance industries who have little ship handling experience themselves. The aim is to give you an insight into some of the problems that may be encountered when handling ships, creating a better understanding of the tasks that their staff may be asked to perform. Pilots Combined Ship Handling (Manned Models) and Bridge Simulator Training towards: Pilot/Master/Deck Officer Course duration: 5 days This training is considered to be part of the pilot and mariner professional development programme. The course consists of three days on the lake handling the scaled models, followed by two days in one of the bridge simulators at the Warsash campus, where further exercises are practised in more port-specific locations. Pilots Emergency Procedures Training towards: Pilot/Master/Deck Officer Course duration: 2.5 days A specialised course for senior mariners and pilots designed to enable the ship handler to respond safely to various emergency and developing situations. These will include engine and rudder failures, emergency stopping in confined waters, interaction scenarios and emergency manoeuvring with anchors and escort towage. 58 Ship simulation training bridge, engine and LICOS Bridge systems and simulation Our impressive range of dedicated bridge simulation and ECDIS training facilities is ably supported by highly experienced lecturing staff who have extensive practical navigation experience, as well as their professional teaching and assessor qualifications. The suite of bridge simulators consists of five networked multi-purpose bridge simulators and one Full Mission Bridge Simulator. Each bridge includes two radars and an ECDIS in an environment that closely resembles the equipment and layouts found in the 'real-world'. This is achieved through active dialogue between the academy and company personnel to identify bespoke best practices in terms of paperless navigation. Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training Operational Level Training towards: Officer of the Watch certification Course duration: 5 days This course is undertaken as an integral part of the deck officer of the watch (OOW) certification programme. For a CoC as officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tons (GT) or more you must complete this mandatory course during the final stages of your training. The aims of the training at this level are to equip you with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to keep a safe navigational watch and to use radar, automatic radar plotting aids (ARPA), electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), automatic identification systems (AIS) and other electronic aids to maintain safety of navigation. Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training Management Level Training towards: Chief Mate certification Course duration: 1 week This course is undertaken as an integral part of the chief mate certification programme. You must have completed at least 12 months watchkeeping service prior to taking this course, whilst holding a certificate of competence issued under Regulation II/1 of the STCW Convention, 1978 (as amended). Further documentary evidence is required including a generic ECDIS certificate. In the second week, you practise real-time radar plotting skills and the practical application of radar theory. By the third week, you develop and practise navigation and collision avoidance skills in our multi-purpose radar and navigation bridge simulator. Master (Yachts) Navigation, Radar and ARPA Simulator Training towards: Master (Yachts) certification Course duration: 2 weeks This course includes passage planning, basic training in the use of ECDIS, knowledge of International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS), competence in search and rescue, and a full understanding and expertise in the use of radar and ARPA. Bridge Team Management (BTM) Training towards: MCA-approved professional development Course duration: 5 days Investigations into marine casualties consistently indicate that a major factor in their causes is a weakness in bridge organisation and management. This course is designed for bespoke company training and is optimised to run with four candidates. The course objectives concentrate on passage planning skills and bridge management techniques. The combination of these essential skills enables the participants to recognise the importance of proper planning, threat assessment, effective communications and good teamwork. Students will learn to identify and break developing error chains, and the issues involved in incorporating a pilot into the bridge team are also investigated. i Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM) We have worked extensively with the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and the MCA on the design and implementation of the latest requirements for human element, leadership and management training, meeting both the resource management and leadership and management elements of the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention and Code. Bridge Team Management (Paperless) Training towards: MCA-approved professional development Course duration: 5 days This course has been developed at the request of several industry majors to meet their needs in the significant changes to hitherto traditional practices and to assist in their transition to paperless navigation. The course is designed for bespoke company training and is optimised to run with four candidates ranging in rank from master to third officer, allowing participants to rotate through all roles and appreciate the difficulties and differences of each position. The course includes all the requirements of the normal BTM course, including emergencies and dealing with pilots, but all navigation is carried out using ECDIS. Different ECDIS may be fitted and used on the Full Mission Bridge Simulator, depending on the customer's requirements. Company procedures are used to add to the realism, while changes to procedures can be tested in a safe environment before being used at sea. 57

The course is designed to meet the bridge resource management requirements detailed in Table A-II/I of the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention and Code. The course has been approved by the MCA as best practice in this challenging field of bridge operations. The aim is to provide opportunities for personnel to consider their role in the working environment and to offer a range of tools and techniques aimed at ensuring effective performance. The subject areas include: situational awareness, situation and risk assessment, communication, culture, leadership and teamwork, and managing workload. Extensive use is made of our bridge simulators to give candidates practical opportunities to practise and demonstrate the bridge resource management skills that are developed throughout the course. Professional Development Ship Simulation Training towards: Professional development Course duration: Up to 5 days This course is designed and conducted in close liaison with clients, ensuring that a bespoke product is delivered in order to meet your company s exacting demands in terms of procedures and drills. Crew Resource Management Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 5 days The purpose of this course is to introduce the main tenets of resource management and to provide a training environment where you can develop their non-technical skills in order to enhance the operational safety and efficiency of company vessels. The course is designed for mixed groups of deck and engineering officers. The optimum numbers are between four and six officers of each discipline per course. Port Pilots Professional Development Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 5 days The time that a pilot spends on board a vessel is usually at the most critical phases of a voyage, such as the start and the finish. During these periods the opportunities for events to be clouded with hyperactivity, excessive communication, close-quarter traffic and berthing encounters are all too plentiful. This course helps to combat these issues through the practice and sharing of experiences and techniques. An examination of current methodology for transits, anchor manoeuvres, berthing and unberthing on the Full Mission Bridge Simulator, in varying conditions of tide, wind and visibility, is designed to provide pilots with opportunities to practise their skills in a challenging, though realistic, environment. FPSO/SBM Berthing Master Training Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 5 days The academy has been involved with the floating production storage off-loading (FPSO) and single buoy mooring (SBM) area for many years and the training is particularly aimed at the berthing and mooring masters' disciplines. We are able to simulate berthing and un-berthing at SBMs, and both spread-moored and turret-moored vessels. Environmental changes can be added and can include current, wind regimes including passing squalls, sudden changes in wind, and failures and emergencies. We are also able to include tugs if required. The training conducted can be tailor-made for experienced berthing masters or those new to the role. 58

In reviewing additional areas upon which simulation technology can be brought to bear, the fields of consultancy and research apply the knowledge and skills from our core business. Our long history of using simulation to establish and/or broaden corporate expertise has been employed in areas ranging from high-end research projects such as Project HORIZON, which examined the cause and effect of fatigue in seafarers, to port development, accident investigation and ship design/handling. The research carried out on Project HORIZON has provided a scientific basis for fatigue mitigation programmes. MARTHA aims to take this data forward and produce models and recommendations that can be used to benefit the welfare of seafarers, increase the shipping industry s management of fatigue and increase maritime industry safety. The simulator represents a significant advancement in bringing realism into this highly specialist training area, providing you with an environment in which you can develop technical engineering skills and non-technical human element, leadership and management skills to exceed the requirements of the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments. It can also be linked to a bridge simulator to provide a total ship simulation training environment. Further information about our Full Mission Engine Room Simulator training facility is available at High Voltage Operational Level Training towards: STCW10 requirement Course duration: 1 day As set out in STCW 2010 Table A-III/1, all engineering and marine electro-technical officers (unlimited or yachts) will have to undertake High Voltage Operational Level training before serving on a vessel with electrical switchboards of 1KV and above.the training gives seafarers the essential education and training in high voltage (HV) installations to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements set out for electrical, electronic and control systems at the operations level. The course will consist of a blend of classroom and practical training, including the use of the engine room simulator, to enable you to understand the arrangement and protection of HV installations on board a vessel and the safety requirements necessary for HV installations. High Voltage Management Level Training towards: STCW10 requirement Course duration: 4.5 days As set out in STCW 2010 Table A-III and before January 2017, all engineering and marine electro-technical officers (unlimited or yachts) will have to undertake High Voltage Management Level training before gaining second (senior) certification and serving on a vessel with electrical switchboards of 1KV and above. This training is suitable for marine engineering officers, electrical officers, engineer surveyors and marine superintendents. The course consists of a blend of classroom and practical training, including the use of the engine room simulator, to enable you to learn how to manage an HV system on board a ship, carry out HV fault diagnosis and maintain electrical supply, while also understanding the need for HV safety rules and regulations, the hazards associated with HV systems, and the safety controls and documentation needed to enable the safe maintenance and operations of HV. Engine Room Resource Management Training towards: STCW professional development Course duration: 4.5 days The main principles of resource management relate to the non-technical skills associated with the social interaction between team members, situation awareness and decision-making. This is a high commitment, complex, simulated working environment. The learning objectives of this course cover all the requirements of the Manila STCW 2010 Amendments, including the addition of competence in Table A-III/2 of 'Use leadership and managerial skills'. Steam Propulsion Plant Operations Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 5 days The majority of steam turbine-propelled vessels are liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. These vessels are at present in the minority, relative to the world fleet. However, indications forecast a significantly large increase in these types of vessels. The Steam Propulsion Simulator at the academy is a control room mock-up which can accommodate four students. The control room is arranged to produce a true working environment with four stations, each one being able to call up any specific part of the system. The simulator can be operated individually or as a team. The system depicts a single screw two-stage turbine and double reduction, articulated gearing system, nitrogen purging and gas detection. The course can be delivered at any venue, operating on a network of laptop PCs to suit clients requirements. Engineering Officer Assessments (Pre-Employment or Pre-Promotion) Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 4.5 days This course is designed to assess the competence of senior engineering officers prior to them being employed or promoted by a shipping company. Candidates for assessment are presented with a range of challenging scenarios and their performance is assessed throughout the course. Shipping companies can provide their own safe operating procedures to be followed during the course if they wish, or the academy s own procedures can be used. A minimum of three engineering officers is required to run the course and the maximum number is four. Assessments can be undertaken on any number of the candidates attending the course. A written assessment report is produced and sent to the shipping company for each of the candidates being assessed. They follow a logical voyage cycle, with cargo operations conducted in real time. The use of real time improves the authenticity of the simulation, and the exercises are designed to cover the most critical parts of each operation, such as loading and topping off of cargo tanks. Each operation is preceded by a briefing which discusses the underlying principles behind the operation, the equipment to be used within the operation and the practical application of the principles to conduct the operation. You then take the theory and put it into practice by conducting the operation yourself. There is also an option to tailor courses to suit specific company requirements if desired. LNG Tanker Operations (Membrane) Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 5 days The course meets the requirements of STCW and IMO Model Course It is based on a 136,000m 3 LNG carrier with a GTT MkIII membrane and steam propulsion system. The vessel leaves a shipyard with cargo tanks containing only dry air, and follows a voyage cycle during the course of the week. This includes initial inerting of inter-barrier spaces, cargo tanks and pipelines, gassing up of cargo tanks and lines, cooling down, loading, gas burning on a loaded voyage, discharge (with or without shore vapour return), cargo tank management on a ballast voyage and the pre-docking operations to gas-free the vessel. Each operation is preceded by a briefing to discuss the operation and the equipment to be used. The detail and level of demonstration prior to conducting the operation varies, depending on student experience. The course does not include any formal assessment but it does conclude with a debriefing from the instructor to consolidate the learning experience. LNG Tanker Operations (Spherical) i LNG simulator training We offer two versions of the LNG simulator course: LNG Tanker Operations: this course is open to anyone to attend those with little or no LNG experience or those with more experience. It covers all the cargo operations in a normal voyage cycle and we can conduct training with either membrane or spherical LNG models. LNG Cargo Operations Management Level (SIGTTO): this course is best suited to those who have some LNG experience. The course follows the syllabus set out by SIGTTO in their Suggested LNG Competence Standard (second edition, 2008) at the management level. It is accredited by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) as meeting the standard. The course follows the syllabus set out by SIGTTO in their Suggested LNG Competence Standard (second edition, 2008) at the management level. It is approved by DNV as meeting the requirements of this standard. The training follows the same dry dock to dry dock voyage cycle as the LNG Tanker Operations (Membrane) course but includes a wider range of subjects, as set out in the SIGTTO syllabus. There is a short assessment each morning, in addition to a final assessment at the end of the course. All assessment marks are aggregated and candidates have to achieve a pass mark of 70 per cent or more to be awarded the course certificate. We recommend that those attending this course have had a minimum of three months service on an LNG tanker as a competent officer and hold a tanker endorsement (liquefied gas) or equivalent. Oil tanker simulator training Petroleum Tanker Operations Simulator i Bespoke FPSO tanker and terminal training We utilize LICOS to offer training for operators who take charge of the Control Room on board the FPSO. There two levels of training; Level 2 is where we create several scenarios to look at improving your knowledge of the risks and hazards and the reasoning behind the operating procedures. Level 3 is designed as two days for stability training and three days in the simulator. The LICOS is also used to assess performance of Control Room Operator duties. We are able to tailor-make tanker and terminal training relevant to your environment. Training towards: Professional development Course duration: 5 days This course meets the requirements of IMO Model Course It follows the voyage cycle of a 165,000dwt Suezmax crude/products tanker. The vessel leaves a shipyard with air in its cargo tanks, and the course includes inerting of cargo tanks, production of a loading plan from voyage orders and loading in accordance with the plan. Discharge of cargo begins with the de-bottoming of tanks and includes crude oil washing and taking heavy weather ballast into designated cargo tanks. Discharge is completed with the stripping of lines and pumps. Successful completion of the courses supports the application for a tanker endorsement from the flag state of the licence holder. Our course lecturers are all experienced officers who have sailed on petrochemical tankers in senior ranks. Volatile Organic Compound Emission Control Training towards: Advanced training Course duration: 1 day Volatile organic compound (VOC) approval is pending as being in accordance with MEPC.1/Cir.680 Section 6 and Section 7. This course has been developed in response to recent amendments to MARPOL Annex VI requiring tankers carrying crude to have and implement an administration-approved VOC management plan. The course covers the purpose of the plan and the principles of control, monitoring and recording VOC release. The hazards and safety issues associated with the control are also covered. Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Emission Control and Crude Oil Washing (COW) Training towards: Advanced training Course duration: 1 day This course is structured to give ships officers, tanker terminal and ship management personnel an appreciation of the function and of VOC emission control management planning and Crude Oil Washing Systems. It relates the operation of these systems to safe tanker practice and illustrates the maintenance requirements of associated equipment. The course consists of two parts: VOC Emission Control, followed by Crude Oil Washing Systems. Crude Oil Washing Training towards: Advanced training Course duration: 1 day Crude oil washing (COW) approval is held from MCA (non- STCW) and Liberian authorities as being in accordance with IMO Assembly Resolution A.446 (XI). The course is designed to comply with the training provisions contained in Appendix II of the Revised Specifications for the Design, Operation and Control of Crude Oil Washing Systems, IMO Assembly Resolution A.446 (XI). The programme will normally be taken after the BOSIET course so that you can build upon the knowledge gained previously. This will give personnel with no specialist emergency response duties a basic understanding and awareness of the hazards encountered when travelling to offshore installations and the emergency procedures involved following an offshore incident. Note that the BOSIET certificate is valid for four years and prior to the expiry of the BOSIET certificate, the one-day Further Offshore Emergency and Escape Chute Training (FOET & ECT) course must be undertaken to maintain the currency of the qualification. Escape Chute Training (ECT) Training towards: OPITO-approved ECT certificate Course duration: 0.5 day Escape chutes are used as a means of escape, where fitted, from offshore oil and gas installations and vessels. The aim of this training programme is to give you an understanding of various escape chute systems used in the industry and practice using them as a means of tertiary escape from offshore installations and vessels. Upon successful completion of ECT, all students will be issued with an OPITO-approved course certificate, which is valid for four years from the date of issue. CA-EBS requires a short training session of approximately 1.5 hours in a classroom environment. This provides you with the knowledge and understanding of the particular hazards and properties of a compressed air emergency breathing system and appropriate emergency response actions to take should the requirement for emergency use arise. It is designed to coach senior officers in aspects of leadership on board their vessels. The main focus is on the management of self, other people and situations. There are opportunities for role-play, individual coaching sessions and reflective periods, as well as classroom teaching on theories and practical case studies. You can leave the course with a good understanding of the principles of leadership as applied on board your vessel, together with your own individual development plans which may be monitored after the course. A maximum number of six students may attend, enabling each person to receive individual attention and feedback from an allocated coach. Professional development Training for Instructors (excluding Teaching Assessment) Training towards: Personal and professional development Course duration: 5 days The purpose of this MCA-approved course is to improve the performance of trainers delivering short training modules; for example, this would include ship members delivering safety briefs. The training consists of lectures and workshops. The course covers the theories of learning, teaching methods, planning lectures and exercises, presentation skills, culture, preparation of course materials, assessment, planning exercises and evaluation. A practical exercise plan will form part of one of the lectures and students will be expected to give presentations during the course. PRINCE2 Project Management PRINCE2 is designed to teach the basic principles of good project management and is run by Southampton Solent University. The course content includes launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard recovery, high-speed manoeuvres and collision regulations. RYA Powerboat Tender Operators Training towards: RYA certificate Course duration: 2 days Powerboat tender operator training is a course that has been developed by the RYA and PYA in response to a superyacht industry survey completed by the PYA. RYA Powerboat Intermediate/Day Navigation Training towards: RYA certification Course duration: 2 days This course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day, on coastal waters, using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques. During the two days, the course covers more advanced boat handling and it is recommended for anyone considering moving on to the advanced course. It is assumed that students have knowledge of boat handling to the standard of the Level 2 course, with a coastal endorsement. It is also recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF/SRC operator s certificate, and have knowledge to the level of day skipper theory. The minimum age to undertake the course is 16 years old. RYA Advanced Powerboat Training towards: RYA certification Course duration: 2 days including at least one night navigation exercise This course is aimed for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips. It includes navigation by day and night, weather and other aspects of skippering a small boat on more challenging passages in coastal waters. Anybody undertaking this course must have the practical skills of the intermediate powerboat course and knowledge of navigation and chartwork to the level of Coastal Skipper/RYA Yachtmaster certificate. It is strongly recommended that students hold a VHF/SRC operator s certificate. The course content includes preparation for sea, boat handling, passage making and responsibility as skipper, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, use of engines, emergency situations and night cruising. Note if you want to work commercially, this Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate cannot be commercially endorsed; you need to go on to complete the Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence (examination). RYA Powerboat Instructor Pre-Entry Assessment Training towards: RYA certification Course duration: 1 day The assessment, which is carried out by an RYA powerboat trainer, ensures that the student has the appropriate knowledge and driving skills required before being able to go on to the course itself. Students driving skills need to be at the highest standard before considering the assessment. 88

91 RYA powerboat and watercraft qualifications RYA Powerboat Instructor Training towards: RYA certification Course duration: 3 days The powerboat instructor is a competent and experienced powerboater who has been trained to teach powerboating up to Level 2 under the supervision of the principal or chief instructor of a recognised centre. You must have logged at least five seasons' experience of powerboating, preferably in a range of boat types and sizes. This is reduced to one season if using powerboats as an integral part of full-time occupation. Students must hold an RYA Level 2 powerboat certificate, a valid first aid certificate and attend a skills assessment prior to the courses. Instructor certificates are valid for five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained. RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor Training towards: RYA certification Course duration: 2 days This course is for RYA powerboat instructors who wish to teach the advanced syllabus. Applicants must hold the advanced course completion award and the RYA/MCA Advanced Certificate of Competence (examination). On successful completion of the course, you can teach the RYA Advanced Powerboat course. The course's main aim is how to deliver the advanced syllabus. RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency Training towards: RYA certification Course duration: 1 day The course is designed for first time and experienced riders and Increasingly this certificate is required for launching in UK harbours, but it is also needed if you want to use a personal watercraft (PW) abroad. Once passed, a certificate of proficiency is issued. The course content includes launching, handling and recovery skills, passage planning and decision-making, high-and low-speed riding skills, essential safety information, collision avoidance and orientation at sea. RYA Personal Watercraft Instructor Training towards: RYA certification Course duration: 3 days The instructor course is run by an RYA personal watercraft (PW) trainer and is assessed by an independent trainer. PW instructors are experienced PW drivers, who have been trained and assessed to run the RYA's Personal Watercraft Proficiency Course. They can now also run the RYA's new Introduction to Personal Watercraft Safety course, which is for guests on superyacht charter holidays. To attend this course you must be a minimum age of 16, hold the RYA personal watercraft proficiency certificate, have at least two years experience of driving personal watercraft and hold a valid first aid certificate. If you are already qualified as an RYA powerboat instructor you can attend a one-day conversion course rather than the full three-day course. 89

92 RYA powerboat and watercraft qualifications RYA Short-Range Certificate Radio (VHF) Training towards: RYA certification Course duration: 1 day The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand-held equipment using international channels. All new VHF sets are either fitted or can be interfaced with DSC, allowing calls to specific vessels. Those holding the old VHF licence (pre-1999) must upgrade their qualification if purchasing new equipment. This can be done by attending this course or, if no tuition is required, by entering for direct examination. The course will be taught using radio simulators and will be examined by a short written test. RYA Professional Practises and Responsibilities Training towards: RYA endorsement Course duration: Online - estimate up to 12 hours Whether you are running a superyacht in the Med or driving a workboat with lifting and towing gear, you need commercial endorsement from RYA in order to use your RYA qualifications professionally as skipper or crew. RYA Yachtmaster Shore-Based Theory Training towards: RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Course duration: 5 days To complete this course, you need to have been boating for several years, operating on board as skipper or navigator. You must be in possession of an RYA VHF certificate and a valid first aid certificate (within three years of the exam). This course is essential preparation for successful attendance of yachtmaster coastal and yachtmaster offshore exams. RYA Yachtmaster Shore-Based Theory courses are intended to provide the theory knowledge required to pass RYA Yachtmaster practical exams first time. The syllabus includes modules in advanced navigation, pilotage and passage planning, revision in the IALA buoyage system, advanced meteorology, in-depth knowledge of IRPCS, fog navigation including blind pilotage, advanced tidal planning, rescue procedures and effective crew management.
