9 B.E / B.TECH MECHNICAL: WILL BE GOING FOR Graduate Marine Engineers Training Job Description: 1) Design and oversee testing, installation, and repair of marine apparatus and equipment. 2) Conduct analytical, environmental, operational, or performance studies in order to develop designs for products, such as marine engines, equipment, and structures. 3) Prepare, or direct the preparation of, product or system layouts and detailed drawings and schematics. 4) Evaluate operation of marine equipment during acceptance testing and shakedown cruises. 5) Analyse data in order to determine feasibility of product proposals. 6) Confer with research personnel in order to clarify or resolve problems, and to develop or modify designs. 7) Investigate and observe tests on machinery and equipment for compliance with standards. 8) Conduct environmental, operational, or performance tests on marine machinery and equipment. 9) Determine conditions under which tests are to be conducted, as well as sequences and phases of test operations. 10) Maintain and coordinate repair of marine machinery and equipment for installation on vessels. 11) Inspect marine equipment and machinery in order to draw up work requests and job specifications. 12) Review work requests, and compare them with previous work completed on ships in order to ensure that costs are economically sound. 13) Prepare technical reports for use by engineering, management, or sales personnel. 14) Maintain contact with, and formulate reports for, contractors and clients in order to ensure completion of work at minimum cost. 15) Coordinate activities with regulatory bodies in order to ensure repairs and alterations are at minimum cost, consistent with safety. 16) Procure materials needed to repair marine equipment and machinery. 17) Act as liaisons between ships' captains and shore personnel in order to ensure that schedules and budgets are maintained, and that ships are operated safely and efficiently.

10 18) Check, test, and maintain automatic controls and alarm systems. 19) Maintain records of engineering department activities, including expense records and details of equipment maintenance and repairs. 20) Perform monitoring activities in order to ensure that ships comply with international regulations and standards for life saving equipment and pollution preventatives. 21) Prepare plans, estimates, design and construction schedules, and contract specifications, including any special provisions. 22) Schedule machine overhauls and the servicing of electrical, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, water, and sewage systems. 23) Supervise other engineers and crewmembers, and train them for routine and emergency duties. Work Environment and Schedule: Most marine engineers split their time between working in an office environment and visiting work sites. In the office, marine engineers use advanced computer software to design engineering solutions. At work sites, they supervise the construction of engineering components and address any design issues that arise during the building process. Some marine engineers have to travel on ships to test or maintain systems that they have designed. In these cases, it may be required to be away from home for long periods of time. Because most engineering projects have tight deadlines, it's often necessary for marine engineers to work overtime as deadlines approach. Additionally, problems with machinery or other equipment may require an engineer's attention at any time of day or night. B.E / B.TECH ELECTRICAL, ELECTRONICS EEE,ETC: WILL BE GOING FOR ELECTRO TECHNICAL OFFICER TRAINING: Job Description: He is responsible for maintenance of all the electrical motors on ship i.e. in engine room and on deck. He is in charge of maintenance of all switchboard including main switchboard and emergency switchboard. He is responsible for maintenance of fire detectors and fire alarm system. He has to maintain all the ship s alarm system. He is responsible for the electronic system fitted onboard ship. He is responsible for the ship s navigational lights and other navigational equipments. He is responsible for all the batteries that are connected to machineries onboard. It includes: Emergency batteries for alarm and lights Lifeboat batteries Batteries for emergency generator

11 Other batteries fitted onboard He is responsible for maintaining refrigeration unit in the engine room He has to take care of air conditioning unit of the vessel. Electrical officer is responsible for maintaining refrigerated containers carried on container ship. He is responsible for cargo and engine room cranes electrical system. He has to carry out routine maintenance for main engine alarms and trips along with the chief engineer. During the time of manoeuvring, he has to be present in the engine room along with other engineers to tackle any kind of electrical and other emergencies. Electrical officer can assist in watch keeping routines at desired time by the chief engineer. He has to assist ship s engineer and deck officer in all kind of electrical problems. B.E. / B.TECH COMPUTER SCIENCE/ IT: WILL BE GOING FOR GRADUATE ENTRY SCHEME FOR NAVIGATION OR DIPLOMA IN NAUTICAL SCIENCE TRAINING Steer and operate vessels, using radios, depth finders, radars, lights, buoys, or lighthouses. Maintain records of daily activities, personnel reports, ship positions and movements, ports of call, weather and sea conditions, pollution control efforts, or cargo or passenger status. Inspect vessels to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment and conformance to regulations. Monitor the loading or discharging of cargo or passengers. Direct or coordinate crew members or workers performing activities such as loading or unloading cargo, steering vessels, operating engines, or operating, maintaining, or repairing ship equipment. Signal passing vessels, using whistles, flashing lights, flags, or radios. Compute positions, set courses, and determine speeds, using charts, area plotting sheets, compasses, sextants, and knowledge of local conditions. Calculate sightings of land, using electronic sounding devices and following contour lines on charts. Maintain boats or equipment on board, such as engines, winches, navigational systems, fire extinguishers, or life preservers. Measure depths of water, using depth-measuring equipment. Arrange for ships to be fueled, restocked with supplies, or repaired. Purchase supplies or equipment. Read gauges to verify sufficient levels of hydraulic fluid, air pressure, or oxygen. Signal crew members or deckhands to rig tow lines, open or close gates or ramps, or pull guard chains across entries. Assign watches or living quarters to crew members. Resolve questions or problems with customs officials. Perform various marine duties, such as checking for oil spills or other pollutants around ports or harbors or patrolling beaches. Tow and maneuver barges or signal tugboats to tow barges to destinations. Interview and hire crew members. Collect fares from customers or signal ferryboat helpers to collect fares. Sort logs, form log booms, or salvage lost logs.
