4 AIRCRAFT RECOGNITION COMPETITIONS [ open to sponsorship ] 1. Wings are to enter TWO teams: Under 16 on the day of the National Competition (November). Open Competition (cadets of any age). 2. The competition is held in accordance with the Stage 2 Competition Rules in ACTO Judges decisions are final. INTRODUCTION AIR CADET TRAINING ORDER Two Air Cadet aircraft recognition competitions will be run each year, using the ACO Aircraft Recognition syllabus: a. Under-16 Competition. All cadets under the age of 16 on the day of the National Competition are eligible to enter into the under-16 Competition each year. All members of a team must be under 16 as must any individual entry. b. Open Competition. All air cadets are eligible to enter the Open Competition, whether or not they are also an individual entrant or team member in the U-16 Competition. 2. ATC aircraft recognition competitions are run annually in 2 stages: a. Wing Competitions. b. Regional Competitions. 3. CCF (RAF) aircraft recognition competitions are run annually in 2 stages: a. Area Competitions. b. Air Squadron Trophy Final Competitions. 4. Each competition is based on a team event for Squadron or Contingent teams of 3 cadets, and on an individual event in which all individuals making up the team compete automatically, but in which other individuals may also be entered; the team and individual events may be run concurrently. Both the ATC and CCF (RAF) competitions culminate in the ACO National Aircraft Recognition Final which will be held in November of each year. page 4 of 21

5 AIR CADET TRAINING ORDER 104 continued STAGE 1 COMPETITIONS 5. Each Wing/Area is to hold a competition for which each Squadron/Contingent may enter teams of cadets as directed by Wing/Area. These competitions are to be included with cadet training, eg. Wing training days, and travel or other public expenditure solely for the competition is not to be incurred. The winning Squadron/Contingent team (and the winning individual cadet, if not already a member of the winning team) is to be nominated for the next stage of the competition. STAGE 2 COMPETITIONS 6. Each Region is to hold a competition for the Squadron teams winning the Wing competition and for the best individual in the Wing, if the cadet is not already a member of the winning team. The winners of the Regional stage are to be nominated for the National final. The Regional stage must be completed by mid-october each year. 7. The CCF is to hold a competition for the Contingent teams winning their Area competition and for the best individual in each Area, if the cadet is not already a member of the winning team. The winning 2 teams from the Air Trophy Finals are to be nominated for the National final by mid-october each year. NATIONAL COMPETITION 8. HQAC will hold a competition for the teams winning the Stage 2 competitions described at paragraphs 6 and 7 and for the best individuals, if the cadet is not already a member of a winning team. Details of the time and place will be promulgated each year, but the National finals will normally be held on the last or second-last Saturday in November, ie. on the same day as the Air Britain Competition (Final), see paras The actual date each year will be published in HQAC Routine Orders. SYLLABUS 9. The syllabus, comprised of two lists of aircraft, will be promulgated by HQAC (TG 2), updated annually, and will comprise aircraft in current use, with the following exceptions: a. Gliders and motorised gliders. b. Microlights. c. Homebuilt aircraft. d. Prototypes. Training material is on BADER Sharepoint under HQ Air Cadets at: %2fACO%20Document%20Library%2fActivities%2fTraining%2fAircraft%20Recognition&FolderCT ID=&View=%7b74DD64BC%2dE86B%2d4F14%2d808B%2d2CCDF3CAFC14%7d or follow HQ Air Cadets/ ACO Document Library/ Activities/ Training/ Aircraft Recognition. page 5 of 21

6 AIR CADET TRAINING ORDER 104 continued COMPETITION FORMAT 10. In each National final, 30 aircraft views will be shown for the main competition, with 3 more which will be marked only if needed to break a tie for first or second place. They will be on 35mm slides or in PowerPoint format. At least 18 out of the 30 will be of military aircraft. Each view will be exposed for up to 2 seconds. For the U-16 Competition, the views will be of aircraft in List 1 of the syllabus only. For the Open Competition, aircraft views will be taken from List 1 and List 2. At Stages 1 and 2, the two competitions (U-16 and Open) may be run concurrently, if time constraints require this. 11. Stage 1 and 2 competitions are to be in the same format as the Corps final, except that exposure times may be increased to 4 seconds maximum at Stage 1 finals and 3 seconds at Stage 2. MARKING 12. One point will be awarded for the correct identification of the basic type of the aircraft shown. The aircraft's mark or series is not needed, except where there might be an ambiguity without it. For example "Mirage" covers a range of several widely differing types; therefore the mark must be given eg. "Mirage F1", "Mirage III". Nevertheless, in general a name or a letter/number designation is normally sufficient eg. "Hawk"; either "F16" or "Fighting Falcon"; "Jaguar"; either "C5" or "Galaxy"; etc. Where a competitor chooses to give both the name and the designation, there must be no conflict between the two eg. for a view of an F14 Tomcat, the answers "F14", "Tomcat", "F14 Tomcat" are acceptable, but answers such as "F15 Tomcat", "F14 Eagle" are not. Finally, note that for former Soviet or Warsaw Pact aircraft, the NATO reporting name and the letter/number designation (eg. "FULCRUM", "MIG-29") are equally acceptable. FINANCE 13. Travel. Cadets representing their Wing at Regional competitions, or their Region at the National competition, may travel at public expense in accordance with the appropriate travel regulations current at the time, as may the supervising adult in charge of each party, and adults nominated to run Regional competitions and the National competitions. 14. Pay. Pay for ATC adult staff concerned solely in the running of, or attendance at, these competitions is not admissible, except that at Regional/Corps meetings, if cadets are obliged to be accommodated overnight, one adult member of staff may be detailed by Regional HQ or HQAC (TG 2) for the supervision and disciplinary control of all the cadets; and he or she may receive one day's pay if uniformed staff. 15. Budgets. Travel allowances paid under para 10 are to be met from Wing and Region budgets for Regional finals, and HQAC central budget for the National final. page 6 of 21

7 AIR CADET TRAINING ORDER 104 continued TROPHIES AND MEMENTOS 16. Engraved medals will be awarded by HQAC to the winners (team and individual) of each of the Regional competitions. 17. The winning team and individual at each National competition will be presented with the team and individual trophies at the conclusion of the contest. Due to their intrinsic value and consequent insurance requirements, some of the trophies cannot be retained by the winners; they will, however, be suitably engraved and held at HQAC. The units of which the winners are members will be provided with a framed picture for permanent retention. There will also be a certificate for each member of the winning team and the winning individual. 18. In addition to the trophies, the winners and runnersup (teams and individuals) in each National competition will be presented with engraved medals. INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS 19. Air Britain (Historians) Ltd holds the finals of their International Aircraft Recognition Contest (Finals) in the cinema of the RAF Museum at Hendon on the same day as the ACO National Final. There are entry fees for teams and individuals and the competition is divided into sections; there is a section especially for ATC/ CCF/ Air Scout teams and individuals. 20. Cadet teams and individuals may enter the Air Britain competition without restriction and irrespective of their performance and, indeed, without participation in the National competition at its various levels. All such entries must, however, be at private (squadron/ school) expense and by direct arrangement with the Air Britain organizers, although HQAC will publish the address of the Air Britain Secretary annually. 21. There is to be no expenditure of public funds solely in connection with the Air Britain competition, either in the form of travel costs or pay and/ or allowances for ACO personnel; and as already stated, entry fees are to be provided from non-public funds.
