3 USS Bennington Memorial & Californian Cruise-and-Salute Sunday, July 21, 2013 The San Diego Chapter of the SAR held its July activity as participation in a Memoriam sail on the Californian, departing from and returning to The Maritime Museum of San Diego. This activity gave members a chance to participate in an Adventure Sail past Point Loma and to join in the Chapter s annual memorial salute to the USS Bennington (PG-4). Firing the Gun The USS Bennington s boilers exploded in San Diego Bay on July 21, Of the 66 sailors killed as a result, 35 are buried in the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery where the San Diego SAR Chapter has held memorial ceremonies on that date in their honor. The Californian participated in that ceremony in The Californian is a replica of a gold rush revenue cutter - an armed maritime law enforcement vessel - that patrolled the coast during the 1850 s California Gold Rush. A topsail schooner built for speed, the Californian carries 7,000 square feet of canvas, measures 145 feet in length and weighs 130 tons. In July 2003, she was designated the Official Tall Ship of the State of California. She is based at the San Diego Maritime Museum, and departed on a ~ 4½ hour sail at 12:00 PM. About an hour later, in passing Pt. Loma, a salute was fired {in Naval parlance, these are referred to as guns } to honor the USS Bennington. Chapter members and guests joined the crew in sailing a traditionally rigged tall ship. They Helping the crew haul the lines helped to haul a line, man the helm and watched the crew as they scampered up and down the rigging to set and furl the sails. The crew related the history of sailing and exploration in San Diego, tales of whaling, cattle hides and sea otter trade, local sea battles and the art of ship's gunnery. After the cruise members and guests met for drinks and dinner at The Fish Market Restaurant and Bar overlooking San Diego Bay. 3
4 No more fitting tribute could be paid to the Bennington heroes than this monument. Long after the horror of the disaster and heroic actions of those who were cast to have a part in the ill-fated affair have been forgotten, this obelisk will stand in the burial ground on Point Loma, as a fitting reminder of the boys whose lives were sacrificed, not fighting for their country, but simply doing their duty San-Diegan Sun Officers and crew of USS Bennington at San Diego, CA 3 March 1905 On Sunday July 23, 1905 survivors of the USS Bennington laid their shipmates to rest at the Fort Rosecrans Post Cemetery. A Protestant minister and a Roman Catholic priest read prayers over the caskets. Commander Young, Commanding Officer of the USS Bennington, addressed the Army officers of Fort Rosecrans: I want to commit to your tender care the bodies of or unfortunate shipmates and patriotic dead. May their graves never be forgotten by the hand of affection and may marble slabs rise upon this, their last earthly resting place, and may the morning and evening sun, playing upon the grassy mounds be symbolic of their shipmates affection. The Fort Rosecrans Post Commander, Captain Scott, replied: I accept the sacred trust of the honored dead 4

13 The Continental Marines By Ray Raser The Unites States Marine Corps was founded by the Continental Congress on November 10, 1775 by the Continental Marine Act. Their mission was to serve on board naval vessels as security forces, they were also used during the American Revolution to make amphibious landings and raids. Some landings during the Revolution were: Landings during the Battle of Nassau, seized and captured shells and canon in the Bahamas. They also captured some small ships. The Marines in December 1776 joined Washington s Army at Trenton, landed and capture Nautilus Island during the Penobscot Expedition, traveled inland down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers where they joined Marines who were brought by ship to the Gulf of Mexico. Together they raided Loyalists in Lake Ponchartrain, Louisiana. The Continental Marines land at New Providence during the Battle of Nassau last official act of the Continental Marines was to escort a stash of silver crowns on loan from Louis XVI of France from Boston to Philadelphia to enable the opening of the Bank of America. The Continental Marines' only Commandant was Captain Samuel Nicholas. According to legend the first recruiting post was in Philadelphia. The Continental Marines are known for their green uniforms. November 10 continues to this date to be celebrated as the Marine Corps Birthday (Source Wikipedia) Editor s Note: Join us at Marine Air Station Miramar on August 17, : 00 am Breakfast Meeting for a program on Continental Marines by Curtis Porter 13
