Here's to 2017 starting off well for everyone in the Base, and I hope everyone got everything they wanted for Christmas. We enjoyed an awesome Christmas Party out at Johnston Woods- rather loved the place, and really enjoyed the camaraderie there. I hope there is another moose next year, because that would be cool. Looking ahead to the next year, I am (as always) looking for input on guest speakers. Just contact me with your ideas and I will see what we can do to get them to attend. We also need to beat the bushes to find other Submariners and get them to join. I have been working on a couple of guys at work, and I think we are close to having a breakthrough there. My suggestion is to wear your boat hat out and about and engage anyone who talks to you about it- ask if they know any Submariners, and let them know when the next meeting is and where. Take a fist full of the base's business cards and hand them out to anyone who shows interest. We all need to take a round turn on this to get some more folks to the meetings and hear some new sea stories... Beyond all that, we need to start planning some things for 2017 such as an Ice Cream Social up at Murfreesboro, and any parades we want to attend. Let me know if you hear of any you want to support and we'll see about throwing our hat into the ring. Getting ourselves out there will help with the recruiting side of things. 3 Upcoming Events Scuttlebutt January 14, 2017 Base Meeting February 11, 2017 Base Meeting March 11, 2017 Base Meeting CDR George Levick Street, III Commanding Officer, USS TIRANTE October and November Base Meetings These meetings were truly business meetings with the usual beginnings (Prayer, Tolling of the Boats, Pledge of Allegiance) and endings (Closing Prayer). During these meetings, we had a chance to discuss base and float needs. Although this description is brief, the meetings were very productive. December Meeting Base Christmas Party. The majority of this issue is a display of pictures of base activities. First, we have pictures of Veterans Day Celebrations in Cleveland, TN. We had a good turnout at the Bradley County Courthouse. Next, there are pictures of the float at the Christmas Parade in Cleveland. Unfortunately, only two people (Rob Malone and Mike Reese) were present at the parade. The third set of pictures shows former Base Commander Brian Meagher at his 80th birthday part. Finally, we have a few pictures of the Christmas Party. As the Base Commander stated, about 40 people enjoyed the Party. "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of this life above and beyond the call of duty as Commanding Officer of the USS TIRANTE during the First War Patrol of that vessel against enemy Japanese surface forces in the Harbor of Quelpart Island, off the Coast of Korea, on 14 April With the crew at surface battle stations, Commander (then Lieutenant Commander) Street approached the hostile anchorage from the south within 1,200 yards of the coast to complete a reconnoitering circuit of the island. Leaving the 10- fathom curve far behind, he penetrated the mined and shoal-obstructed waters of the restricted harbor despite numerous patrolling vessels and in defiance of fire shore-based radar stations and menacing aircraft. Prepared to fight it out on the surface if attacked, Commander Street went into action, sending two torpedoes with deadly accuracy into a large Japanese ammunition ship and exploding the target in a mountainous and blinding glare of white flames. With the TIRANTE instantly spotted by the enemy as she stood out plainly in the flare of light, he ordered the torpedo data computer set up while retiring and fired his last two torpedoes to disintegrate in quick succession the leading frigate and a similar flanking vessel. Clearing the gutted harbor at emergency full-speed-ahead, he slipped undetected along the shore line, diving deep as a pursuing patrol dropped a pattern of depth charges at the point of submergence. His illustrious record of combat achievement during the First War Patrol of the TIRANTE characterizes Commander Street as a daring and skilled leader and reflects the highest credit upon himself, his valiant command and the United States Naval Service." (This completes the series on submarine Medal of Honor recipients.) 3

4 Veteran s Day in Cleveland, TN This was a great celebration. Cdr. White, the commanding officer of the Reserve Center was the guest speaker. He was the officer who fired at the terrorist who killed five marines We took the float to help recruit new members Commander White was the guest speaker for Veteran s Day.
