1 Commander s Comments President s Message AMERICAN LEGION VOLUME 2017/ISSUE 3 NOVEMBER 1, 2017 POST 180 NEWSLETTER SUPPORT OUR TROOPS This represents the mid-point in my second year as your Commander. I appreciate the work and support that many of you have provided in advancing the mission and goals of the Post and the American Legion. We have a number of events scheduled for November and December and I hope everyone will participate when you can. I also encourage you to assist in making these events enjoyable. We are managing to make our monthly and quarterly membership Fall is upon us, in all its fury! As the holidays approach, we are looking forward to assisting our beloved veterans during what can be a very stressful time. Please join us for our Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation fundraiser on November 18 th, and come celebrate the season at the Winter Wonderland Dinner and Dance in December; all proceeds benefit our VA & R and Troop Support Programs. Thank you to all who donated toiletries for our "Socks for Soldiers" program. The Auxiliary E-board and Department S.A.L. Detachment Commander Marc Chaney spent an evening stuffing the donated items into more than 500 pairs of socks, which we handed out to homeless veterans at the Troutdale Stand-down. Socks are the most requested item by homeless veterans, and we are making this a S.A.L. Message Hello SAL members, I hope you are all well. I am writing this letter on the day that my Aunt passed and I paused for a minute to remember what a beautiful lady she was. I thought of how many names I see posted on the white board in the post of all the members who are sick or have passed. We all lose those close to us and should remind ourselves of just how short life is; reach out to those we love, be it a friend or family member in need. Our post is here to help support those in need and it should be an opportunity for us all to reach out and help one another. It s always nice to see a friendly face check up on us or drop off a meal to ease the burden on the family. We can also help the many events here at goals, but we need continued effort in this area. Those that have not renewed your membership, please do so before the end of the year. As noted in other articles in this newsletter, the Post is ending our engagement with the City of Milwaukie in commemorating the Vietnam War. Our final major event will be the dedication of a memorial obelisk at Scott Park at 11 AM on Veterans Day Saturday, November 11 th. Please plan on attending the event and show your appreciation for all those that served during this tumultuous time in our country s history. Thanks to those of you whom attended Sadie Hawkins night, (and especially those who had their friends and loved ones arrested...!) the Auxiliary raised approximately $500 for the Education and Scholarship program. Combined with the very generous school supplies you all donated, several school children will have what they need for a successful school year. Please remember to send in your membership renewal (thank you if you already have); Your dues, along with the generous folks who volunteer, are how we are able to make a difference in the lives of so many veterans. I would also like to see more of us at our monthly meetings on the 3 rd Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm. If you are interested in coming in to help, even if its for one day or one hour please do so. If you have any question or concerns I am always available to talk. I am blessed to have a caring family and am very lucky to have our post as a place of support as well. I hope you feel the same. 2 BOY SCOUT WREATH SALE AND TREE RECYCLING The Scouts of Troop 144 are selling wreaths and swags to raise money for their camping activities and summer camp. 22 round wreaths with a custom bow are $20. Candy cane swags are $23. Orders are due by November 17 th. You can phone Jana Kreilich at , or at jana.kreilich@kroger.com. The wreaths will be available by December 2 nd, and we can arrange for pick up at the Post, or for delivery. The scouts will also be recycling Christmas trees again this year. Trees, wreaths, swags and garlands can be dropped off at the parking lot of St. John s Catholic Church on SE Washington St. (across the street from the Milwaukie High football field) between 10AM and 3PM on Saturday December 30 th and Saturday January 6 th. Suggested donation is $5 per tree, and $2 for wreaths, swags and garlands. To arrange for a pick-up of your tree, call Joe Keller at or jwkeller144@comcast.net. BATTLE FOR GUADALCANAL NEARS END The fight to take the entire island of Guadalcanal and secure the airfield from the Japanese continued throughout the summer of After the carrier Hornet was bombed and sunk the night of 25 October during the nearby Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, Admiral Halsey, now commander of the South Pacific Fleet, was left with only one serviceable carrier, two battleships, two cruisers, and eight destroyers. Soon afterwards, reinforcements arrived at Guadalcanal for both sides. Adm. Turner brought three heavy and two light cruisers and eight destroyers and landed the 182 nd Infantry on 12 November. The naval battle of Guadalcanal took place early the following morning. Rear Adm. Norman Scott was killed, three destroyers and a light cruiser were sunk, and nearly 700 men were killed in the battle, matching the number of Marines killed on the island. Now the tables were turned. Japan continued nightly attempts to land more troops, but Japanese vessels were easily sunk the next day. When Japan attempted to bomb Henderson Field, American fighter pilots intercepted from above. The sailors watched aerial combat from aboard their ships. One eye-witness account from aboard light minelayer USS Tracy (DM-19) states that the ship headed out to pick up a Japanese pilot who parachuted from his aircraft. But the pilot AUXILIARY MEMBERSHIP Everyone should have received their dues notices by now. As of October 13, 2017, we had 79 members paid (23.8%) of our 2018 membership goal of 332 members. The Department Commander (Gene Hellickson) and Department President (Helen Hisaw) have challenged each other to see who can recruit the most new members. It began with President Helen challenging the Legion to recruit new members for the American Legion Auxiliary. Commander Gene accepted that tripped his parachute release mechanism and fell into the water. When the ship arrived, the men only found a parachute and the canvas straps of the harness, which were charred black. The attacks continued. During this time, the attack cargo ship, USS Alchiba (AK-23) became the only ship torpedoed twice at Guadalcanal. First, she was almost to Guadalcanal from Tulagi on 28 November, loaded with ammo and barrels of fuel, when two torpedoes from a miniature submarine started a huge fire. The ship was beached and supplies were unloaded through the thick black smoke. The fire lasted five days. Then, on 7 December, two more torpedoes from a miniature sub were fired at Alchiba; one missed, but the 2 nd struck the port side near the engine room, killing three men, injuring six others, and causing significant structural damage. Both Japanese and the U.S. governments reported the ship as sunk. Survivors of Alchiba heard reports that Tokyo Rose had even announced the sinking. However, the ship was not sunk and received the Presidential Unit Citation, awarded personally aboard by Adm. Halsey. The eye-witness writer received a broken back and spent many months in a brace in the hospital, but would later receive a Purple Heart. The battle for Guadalcanal, however, was not over but at least there was end in sight. Another sea battle off Guadalcanal ensued while the reinforced Marines began their land battle in earnest, putting the Japanese in retreat. ~ Barbara Jones challenge and in turn, challenged the Auxiliary to recruit new American Legionnaires. President Helen will present $100 to the Unit with the most new Legionnaires, and Commander Gene will present $100 to the Post with the most new Auxiliary members between now and the end of the year. Remember, it s not just the Officer s duty to recruit new members. It s everyone s duty! So let s start talking about our great organization to everyone and bring in those new members! Karen Chaney ~ Membership Secretary CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PARTY The annual children s Christmas party will be held on December 23 rd from 1-3PM. Mr. & Mrs. Claus will be making a visit and handing out presents to each child attending. There will be a Christmas story, Christmas Carrols and stockings. Refreshments will be served. EVERYONE is welcome. Please come and join the fun. Diane Bowman ~ Children & Youth Chairman Armed Forces Recruiting Dilemma? More than 70 percent of today's youth are not fit to serve in the military due to being overweight, criminal records, drug misuse or educational deficits as noted in the Trust for America s Health August 2017 report. 2 American Legion Milwaukie Post 180

3 CHAPLAIN he Holidays are upon us, and stores already full of T Christmas everything. It is a time to think of past Thanksgivings and Christmas. Please make sure you look at the Newsletter schedules for Thanksgiving Dinner and Christmas events at the Post. The Auxiliary always has things at the Post for donated food and children that are given out each year to those in need. The time to donate, send cards and other things to our veterans overseas has passed or about to pass. The USO at the airport always needs help during the season. The Honor Guard does have programs already scheduled for assisted living groups throughout the county for the week before Veterans Day. It is amazing when you think of the country, to include those we often forget about on islands in the south, going through massive weather incidents, large fires, and shootings in news local and national. I have talked to many who have joined FEMA to go to the east coast and to the southern states to help and are still there today. When the shooting in Las Vega occurred chaplains, ministers, and counselors from fire and police departments in Portland were in route to Nevada the next day to help those needing assistance. Many fire departments, some all volunteer departments, locally are being called to fight fires in California. Our First Responders are constantly moving, leaving family and friends to assist the areas in need. I know many of you and others are saying prayers and blessings for these men and women. Don't forget the families who may need some help that are in your community or across the street. It means a great deal to hear from you and your interest in them. In December American Legion Post 180 will close out the 50 th Vietnam War Commemorative program. The Post and City in partnership under this program will dedicate a Vietnam Monument and new benches in Scott Park next to the Ledding library for the AUXILIARY SECOND VICE ust a friendly reminder that all our meals are J prepared fresh with you, our guests, in mind and is one of the major ways we earn funds to help our many programs. All kitchen help, cooks, dishwashers, servers, etc are VOLUNTEERS. Please treat all our volunteers with respect and kindness, they are taking time out of their own schedules to serve Commemorative program. This monument will have all the service members from Clackamas County and Milwaukie who died in Vietnam listed on it. The ceremony starts at 11 AM on 11 November so mark you calendars and please attend if you can. There will be a musical concert given by American Legion Musicians Post 185 between 1 PM and 3 PM at the Post. We deeply appreciate the City of Milwaukie asking us to partner with them for the last three years. It has been an honor to work with them and the community in this endeavor and on many other things. As a member of the Clackamas County Veterans Advisory Committee, they have been working hard to help the homeless with money to build little houses, get veterans and families back on the road to recovery, to use a word, in many areas. Programs such as PSTD, the 22 program, stand downs, getting families and veterans to the VA or a doctor who have been touched by Agent Orange and many other programs are at work and need help and volunteers. I truthfully say they have so much on the plate, and again you hear they need more and more funds to complete daily these programs. "Father, we ask for your blessings and spiritual help on so many in need, who survived large weather, large fire, and even mass and small shootings across the country and the worlds stage. To many of us this seems like too much at one time, but with your strength, understanding, and Angels using our hands to help we will get though it. There are so many trying to help in their own way or an individual group. Guide them where they are most needed. Let us remember we are all human in need, all equal to each other, and want, but those next to us may be in need more. Guide us to be team players and team builders, grasping with understanding each other to help each other daily, and minute by minute for the common good. Let us remember what Thanksgiving and Christmas means and its dual purpose. I ask this in your name-amen" Jerry Craig ~ Chaplain you! Many of our members are on very fixed and limited incomes and the tips you provide them often help pay for gas so they can come down to the Post and serve your meals. Donate on December 9 th at the Milwaukie Post The Red Cross will be setting up and conducting a Blood Drive in the Post on 9 December. Set up will begin at 0700 and blood donors will be invited in from 9 AM to 1 PM. Please let your friends, family members, and neighbors know about this important event. If you can assist in setting up and taking down the event, your help will be appreciated. Please contact Jim Rolison, Post Sgt-at-Arms for sign up assistance ( )! Funds Available for Veteran ur Service Officer has been notified that there are funds available O to support veterans in need that meet the following criteria: 1. Veteran must have a disability due to deployment; 2. Must have been deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan, or in the Gulf region; 3. Must have at least one dependent. These funds are available through the Nation of Patriots organization and must be requested by 31 December If you know of any veteran in need of financial support that meets the above criteria, please contact Michele Menefee at the Post and she will provide you with additional information. 4 HELP FOR HOMELESS VETERANS omelessness is a growing problem throughout the H nation, the state and here in Clackamas County. I want to let you know about one step we are taking to respond to the needs of our homeless veterans, and invite you to consider lending a helping hand. Two years ago, the Board of County Commissioners set aside $300,000 to build a transitional housing community for homeless veterans. After searching for available sites and working through our own land use and zoning process, the community is proposed to be located on a vacant industrial site owned by the Development Agency near the corner of 115 th Avenue and Jennifer St. in unincorporated Clackamas. The temporary, transitional community for military veterans will offer shelter, security, safety, skill-building opportunities and a chance to build confidence in a village setting. Residents will be supported with social, behavioral and physical health services, and will be involved in governing the community. The community will contain up to 30 sleeping pods, along with community facilities for kitchens, showers and restrooms, and a community room. The pods will be weather-resistant, insulated, VETERANS AFFAIRS AND REHABILITATION (VA&R) The reason we exist.. To formulate and recommend to the National Executive Committee of The American Legion policies, plans and programs on direct assistance, outreach and support for veterans and their families with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) claims and benefits, health care, memorial affairs and women veterans programs to ensure that they receive the highest quality of care from VA for their injuries and illnesses incurred from their military service; To coordinate the activities of the National Organization in veterans affairs; 4 American Legion Milwaukie Post 180 vented appropriately for all-season weather and will comply with health and safety codes. You can learn more about the project on Portland State University School of Architecture students designed the pods and, along with City Repair, are leading the building process with lumber from a stage built for the Pickathon, festival held this last summer in Happy Valley. The first 15 sleeping pods are being built on our Red Soils campus, near the Juvenile Department and you can help. Organizers are seeking volunteers to help build the pods. No technical skills are necessary, and needed tools and equipment will be provided on-site. If you have the time and would like to help, you can register at City Repair While the City Repair registration site gives you the option to choose your preferred shift and task, please keep in mind that the project can only accommodate 15 volunteers per shift, so your desired shift may not be available. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to the welfare of some of the most deserving people in our community. Thanks, in advance, for your help. To oversee the effectiveness of The American Legion s programs of service to these war veterans and their dependents in claims for benefits administered by federal and state programs; Such other purposes as may be assigned to it by the National Executive Committee. VA&R BENEFIT DINNER Our annual VA&R benefit dinner will be held on Saturday, November 18 th at 5:30PM. Serving Stuffed Pork Loin, Salad, Veggies, Potatoes & Dessert for only $10.00 Please come join us for an excellent meal (Erin s famous stuffed Pork Loin!) and support this valuable program. ALL PROCEEDS WILL GO TO VA&R. Legionnaires of the Month Barbara Jones is recognized as the Legionnaire of the Month for September. This recognition is for Legionnaire Jones work in supporting FEMA in helping individual in the natural disasters we have recently seen in Texas and California. Barbara has volunteered and travelled to both Texas and California and this shows her compassion for the people of this country. Well done Barbara! Dave Siri is recognized as the Legionnaire of the Month for October. This recognition is for Legionnaire Siri stepping up and taking on the Post Secretary duties and support of the Post Adjutant in maintaining our reports and membership data. Dave is also managing the new ads we are seeing on the Big Screen in the dining room. If you have some input for the ads, please let Dave know! Post Volunteers of the Month Judy Muehe is recognized as the Post Volunteer of the Month for September. This recognition is for Ms. Muehe s assistance in managing the Post BINGO efforts. One can see Judy almost every Sunday afternoon taking care of the 3-5 PM BINGO games. Thank you Judy for all that you do to support the Post! Diane Bowman is recognized as the Post Volunteer for the Month for October. This recognition is for Ms. Bowman s work in preparing the Post for memorial events and her tireless efforts in supporting youth programs with parties and activities. Most, if not all, the decorations that appear in the Post dining room are the result of Diane s efforts. Thank you Diane for all the work you do at the Post and with the Auxiliary. Many of us are familiar with what is known as the barrack lawyer. This is a person that takes some small truth and extends it to an irrational conclusion. Be very wary of this person! He or she will make a fool of you.

It is time for more Post members to step up and take on some of the cooking responsibilities. Mike and Chuck have offered to help train those Post members that have a committed interest in this area. Renewals and Recruiting Status The Legion s fiscal year ends on June 30 th which means that the new Legion year begins on July 1 st. 10 AMERICAN LEGION POST 180 NEWSLETTER November ~ December 2017 Leadership / Management involve making decisions. Those decisions may not be agreed to by some but they are made by the person responsible for those decisions based on his/her information at the time. Elections are held to select those that the Legionnaire membership wishes to preside over the management of the Post. You may not agree with who is elected.but it is a democratic process and if your candidate was elected you would want the rest of the organization to support your candidate. How about working with that same frame of mind with whomever is elected. We all vent when we are unhappy, depressed, or upset, it is a natural thing to do. When you are listening to those that are venting, consider if this has been your personal experience with the person that is being degraded, do you really believe that is what happened. There are usually at least two sides to a story or event. You are free to choose, but you are not free from the consequences of your choice.
