1 AMERICAN LEGION VOLUME 2017/ISSUE 4 JULY 1, 2017 POST 180 NEWSLETTER Commander s Comments Greetings and salutations, As we begin our new Post year, I extend my thanks all those that supported the officers and employees in our efforts during the last Post year. It was definitely a learning experience for me and I sincerely hope that I can improve on my short comings from last year. As many of you know, some of our equipment and furnishings are in need of repair and/or replacement and we will need to address these items in the coming year. We have received some suggestions and are looking into how we can economically deal with the needs of the President s Message SUPPORT OUR TROOPS How Exciting!!! A new administrative year brings a new beginning for the Milwaukie 180 Family, and I am looking forward to working with Commander Wilson, SAL Squadron Commander Shults, and ALR Director Peterson to make a productive and enjoyable year for the veterans Post. We certainly welcome any input and help from the membership as we move forward in addressing these areas. We are actively recruiting additional bartenders for the Post lounge. If you know of anyone that might be interested in part-time employment, please have them contact our Lounge Coordinator, Carolyn Wolfe at We always need more Post members to participate and help in our activities. I encourage you to seek out ways to assist in the operation of the Post. Michael Wilson ~ Commander whom we serve. ALA Unit 180 has a long and distinguished history of service, and I will do my best to live up to the wonderful example that has been set for me. Erin Walters ~ Auxiliary President S.A.L. Message I first walked into The American Legion Post 180 about 5 years ago. It was a busy Sunday breakfast and that s why I came in. I saw an empty table and the man sitting at the next table told me to have a seat. We talked about the time he served on a submarine in the Navy. I asked as many questions as stories he told. I was honored when he asked me to become a member. I will never forget his welcoming conversation, and since then, I ve had the pleasure to sit and talk with Gary a few times. He is always entertaining. That s a great example of why it s all about the people you meet and the relationships you form. Now the post feels like home. I had no idea how many friendships I would discover from making it part of my life. When you make a new community part of your weekly routine, you know you ve found a home. I joined the Sons of the American Legion at Post 180. I had been to a few posts around the northwest with friends in the past and was excited to see we had one in Milwaukie. I have been a Firefighter in Forest Grove Oregon for just over 5 years and also have a construction / remodeling company business for 20 years. Now I have new friends for life and I always look for opportunities to help where I can. One of those friends is Marc Chaney the S.A.L. Commander. He encouraged me to run for office last year. I lost to Marc but accepted the First Vice Commander position. I decided to give it another try, and last month, I was elected S.A.L. commander. I look forward to working with all the S.A.L. officers and will rely on Marc to guide me through the learning process. I would like to thank Marc for his ten years as an officer in the S.A.L. and would like to congratulate him on a job well done!!! I really hope we can build up the S.A.L membership and our participation in the post events. Please join me at a few dinners we have coming up. On July the 22 nd we are having a Beef Brisket for dinner. On August 26 th we are having Chicken Parmesan. Let s make this a great year! Bill Shults ~ Squadron Commander AMERICAN LEGION POST 180 WEBSITE & Facebook

2 FIRST VICE COMMANDER As I write this, the American Legion year ends with changes in some new officers and new goals for The Oregon American Legion Convention starts 21June through 25 June in Florence, Oregon. In the issue for May/ June 2017 I listed the things the Post has expanded upon to grow in Clackamas County overall. This covered Milwaukie, Gladstone, Clackamas County and many other veterans groups in the area to work together for the common good of all. We close 2017, soon, with the 50th Vietnam War Commemorative Program, after bringing the Vietnam Wall to Milwaukie High after 18 months of hard work, and a new Memorial being installed in Milwaukie at the Ledding Library ( in progress). The programs and organizations listed grow each year, but the goals are the same, supporting the community and our veterans, in which we live each and every day. Congratulations to all the Post and Unit members. In 2007, after 40 years, I retired from the US Army (entering into a brotherhood of service veterans nation wide) and from Local 48 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Portland. My wife and I stopped by the Milwaukie American Legion to see what they were doing, and joined because it appeared to have a lot going on, welcomed at the front door, getting a tour of the building, and what they had to offer without asking more, and had a friendly atmosphere and a lot of positive attitudes. After finding time, I began helping with electrical maintenance. I soon met a lady who was to become the Commander, Shirley Davis, and she said because I was given keys to the Post I should become a part of the Executive Board "to make it legal". She made me the Senior Military Adviser for the time working with local military organizations of all services. During this period, Judy and I, brought several friends and associates into the Post to include our Bowling League, some still are members. After that I was asked to be the Judge Advocate (due to the Trimet Project for three years), Chaplain, Honor Guard Commander, Executive Board member, and First Vice. Through my years I have found changes good and bad that effect us all. The keys are that all members are "volunteers", otherwise the Post, Auxiliary Unit, Sons of the American Legion Squadron, and Junior Girls programs would not exist. Many forget that item at functions, and when they walk in the door time after time. The Post and all organizations have Legion, Community, State, and National rules to be governed by and run a non-profit organization. The leaders need to follow those rules daily. The Post, overall exists due to you, your help and concern for other veterans and respective families. You, as a 'A SHOT OF WHISKEY' 2 American Legion Milwaukie Post 180 member of American Legion Post 180 should be proud of this Post in so many ways, other Posts are closing early, not having breakfasts and dinners, or losing members because they are not responding to members, to include the ladies of the services or being involved in the community. If you have not heard the services are promoting the use of female soldiers, sailors, Marines, and Air Force members. The very first female soldiers have passed into the Elite Ranger Regiments, became infantry soldiers earning the blue shoulder cords, and armor soldiers, plus the Academies are graduating officers into the same units. The Navy has female Submariners, jet fighter pilots and on and on. They are today's service members who protect our country as well as the male members currently and in the past. Posts cannot get volunteers to help at the Post and Auxiliary functions or help promote the Post to the community. The other key issue is the Auxiliary Unit in each Post has an assigned mission, many goals, and works every day for supporting veterans. They are and have for years at our Post been the glue that kept us alive and well whether others will admit that. Many Post ladies have joined the Auxiliary and are part of each group. Until each group supports the other 100 percent this Post will not survive despite prior years experiences. Since 1991 military services have had a family support group for each unit, Brigade up to Corps. Without them the services do not survive nor have the camaraderie of the past. That is a true fact. So give each other the respect you are both due, insure your leads follow the rules one for all and all for one". The last issue is there are members who from time to time do not follow the rules, think they own the Post and are special and disrupt the activities, or hurt others emotionally. All members are responsible to insure they are counseled, given warnings, and if they will not comply need to be removed from the Post for the common good. Let no one person or a couple people ruin the Post or its reputation. Remember this is your Post, to enjoy and remember the good in each others service to your family, community, and country. For some time, I have, due to family and medical concerns, wanted to take some time off from the E-Board activities. There was always something needed done or someone asked me to stay for good reasons. I have made the decision to leave those full time duties this year. I plan, with God s Grace, to be around, helping and counseling others in a true member and Chaplains mode. I will remain active in the Post Honor Guard, who respectively keeps the Post in the view of all. I appreciate your good words, your faith in me, support, and understanding. May God Bless this Post, its members, and The United States of America. Jerry Craig ~ 1st Vice Commander In the old west a.45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a "shot" of whiskey. ROAST & TOAST AWARDS BANQUET, JULY 15, 2017 Please join us on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 6PM for our annual roast and toast. At this event, we will proudly display all awards our Post, Unit and Squadron earned during the past year. This is also a time when our Officers have an opportunity to publicly thank all their Officers from the previous year. Bring your favorite dish to share and see what we, as a family, have accomplished!

3 FOR GOD AND COUNTRY The American Legion has a For God and Country Program. The basic platform includes Americanism. The basic right to have religious freedom and there is no national or established religion. You worship any way you wish and therefore the American Legion is nondenominational and non-sectarian. It, like our nation, has a history of serving this Nation with Honor, Duty, and Country-" Blessed is the nation whose God is Lord" was and is the common belief from the forming of the Constitution of the United States, through the formation of the American Legion in 1919, and to today. We do need to remember that are program is not a church or synagogue. I have to remind many that have served about services in the field. The Father or Minister or someone who knows more than others about the Bible calls for a service under the tree, in the open, in the bunker or even in a building half gone. Each service pastor usually is trained to provide the service of most faiths and does so. However, this conveys one of the objectives of the For God and Country Program. Objective A: "Service to God". To each other and Religious Education of Children. Again, the past helps the future by getting parents to engage their children in religious questions and interests shown by others. Objective B is Service to Country which means getting involved in the community and the nation. This is one of the primary objectives of the American Legion. Each Post and Auxiliary have responsibility to engage the City Council, civic leaders, and church's all around them to work together for the community good. We as a collective group of concerned citizens cannot do everything, but we can be of service to others. Our basic citizenship within the nation asks us to be responsible, to give some time, talent and means to do so. It does take some integrity, self sacrifice and hard work to start and continue to do that service. We need to continue that with the help of others. With this concept listed above, each Chaplain approaches the position the best he or she can. Some are better prepared than others but the objectives are the same. We are responsible also to provide certain ceremonies at the Post each year that reflect on Legion objectives. USS Portland (LPD) to be Commissioned in Portland, OR The USS Portland, a 684-foot 25,000 ton amphibious transport dock ship (LPD-27) is planned to be commissioned here in Portland sometime in April 2018, probably April 21 st. Free tickets to attend the event are available through the USS Portland website (ussportlandlpd27.org). Up to 5,000 people will be able to attend the free open-to-the-public commissioning ceremony. Ship tours will also be available. Stay tuned for more information! 3 American Legion Milwaukie Post 180 Items such as The Four Chaplains, Post Everlasting, the POW/MIA Ceremony, saying prayers before and ending of meetings, American Flag retirement and disposal, and working with the Honor Guard who provide military honors to those veterans, when requested, when they pass or helping at memorials if needed, are very important to the Post and community. The Honor Guard is now considered to be one of the best in the local area. Local funeral homes have helped to obtain further training in funeral protocol. The Chaplain, he or she, also has a mission to work with the Service Officer helping veterans in any way possible. They work close with each other. Now, I present this to you because I feel many, in most Posts, do not know what the reasons are to have a Chaplain. We are here for you, your family and the veterans who need help, even just to sit down and use our shoulders for many topics. We, meaning the Chaplain and Service Officer meet many who are in need of help and discussion outside the Post proper. Families call the Post in need of help from what to do if a family member dies, to VA help, to my husband died and I know he died from Agent Orange and I need help, to my son just committed suicide what do I do? When we had the Vietnam Replica Wall at Milwaukie High I have told many that we were able to help many families connect with their father, grandfather or mother about what they did in the war and why to that date they did not wish to talk about it. Thanks to Chaplain Terry Schrick and 21 other Chaplains, plus brother Scott Southard we were able to help, to our knowledge 250 families reconnect. Those are things Chaplains do every day on and off duty. But it is important to know we are here if you need us. Remember, many of us are also volunteers and help with God s Grace as we can in all things. As I close out the Vice Commander position, I become the Service Chaplain and work closely with Clackamas County Veterans Advisory Council thanks for your help and understanding. God Bless you and yours, and the United States of America Jerry Craig The American Legion Extension Institute So you think you know all about the American Legion? 4 Hepatitis C (from the OR VN magazine) The single biggest risk factor for Hepatitis C is being stationed outside the United States and that is the main reason veterans are at higher risk, especially Vietnam veterans. Because of the higher prevalence in veterans born between 1945 and 1965, the VA is recommending that everyone in this generation be tested. For more information about the VA hepatitis C program, call Symptoms of Hepatitis C, a virus that primarily affects the liver, The Summer of 42 Guadalcanal 75 Years Ago After the Battle of Midway (June 4-7, 1942), Japan invaded the westward Aleutian Islands of Kiska and Attu, while Adm. Nimitz and Gen. MacArthur began making island-hopping amphibious landings that avoided the strongly-held Japanese islands. On 1 July 1942, Japan sent nearly 3,000, mostly construction workers, to Guadalcanal to build an airfield from which to bomb Espiritu Santo, Efate, and New Caledonia. A timely taking of the airfield by Allied forces became imperative. The first stage was U.S. Navy and Marine landings on Guadalcanal and nearby islands. U.S. carriers Wasp, Saratoga, and Enterprise, supported by a new fast battleship, USS North Carolina, 5 heavy cruisers, a light cruiser, and 16 destroyers, made up Amphibious Task Force 62, commanded by Portland, OR native Rear Adm. Richmond Turner. TF62 arrived off Guadalcanal on 7 August for the landing of the 1 st and 5 th Marines, the first U.S. 20 th century amphibious operation in the Pacific. Air support was provided by Australian TF44 under Rear Adm. Victor Crutchley and by TF61, under Adm. Frank Fletcher. Simultaneously, 3,000 include fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain and yellowish pigmentation of the skin (jaundice). In more serious cases, it can cause liver disease or cirrhosis, which can lead to cancer or liver failure. Three out of four people living with this virus don t know that they have the virus, because they ve never been tested and their symptoms have yet to surface. New treatment regimens are orally based, typically last 8 to 12 weeks, with cure rates of 94% or higher based on VA statistics. A simple blood test can determine if someone is infected. GET TESTED and TREATED if you have this virus. Marines landed on nearby Tulagi, Florida, Gavutu, and Tanambogo Islands to the northeast. Just after midnight on 9 August, a Japanese flotilla arrived and instigated the Battle of Savo Island, which cost the Allies 4 cruisers, a destroyer, 1,270 men killed, and more than 700 wounded. This same day, TF61 withdrew, leaving TF62 with insufficient air cover. Adm. Turner then departed before completely unloading his ships, leaving more than 16,000 Marines on Guadalcanal without naval support or air cover and only half of their weapons and supplies. Finally, on 15 August, 3 destroyer transports arrived with bombs, ammo, fuel, aircraft spare parts and USMC Air Ops personnel for landing the first Marine Corps aircraft at Henderson Airfield. Throughout the summer, TF62 provided escort duty and antisubmarine patrol. Guadalcanal, under daily Japanese attack with reinforcements supplied via the Tokyo Express, would not be secured until some six months later in February The VA Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC) is looking for clothing donations. The CRRC is located in downtown Portland and offers services for veterans who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. Services in the center include a primary care team, mental health and social services. Working with many government and community members the CRRC s mission is to find resources, provide treatment, access to care and ultimately find stability and security for the many homeless veterans in our community. The CRRC relies on clothing donations from the public. Currently, the CRRC is in dire need of men s jeans and pants (size 30-34), sleeping bags, backpacks, tents and belts at this time. Due to limited storage space, items able to be accepted are limited but there is a constant need as inventory comes in and out of the CRRC at a steady rate. Any new or gently used items that you can donate will be very much appreciated by the CRRC and the veterans we serve. Points for Profit is a non-profit organization with vendor sponsors as well as non-profit members and is a way for us to earn FREE MONEY to help support our veteran programs. Each year, the points a nonprofit earns are turned into cash and are distributed to the non-profits with the most points. Points are earned by going to their meetings (currently held at Elmer s on 82 nd Drive), purchasing a meal at the meetings, asking questions of sponsoring vendors, and shopping with those vendors. 10 AMERICAN LEGION POST 180 NEWSLETTER July ~ August 2017 Military Funeral Honors Ceremonies The law requires that upon the family s request every eligible veteran receive a military funeral honors ceremony, which includes the folding and presentation of the United States flag and the playing of taps,. The Department of Defense program calls for the funeral director to request military funeral honors on behalf of the veteran s family. Funeral directors should be able to work with the VA and various veterans organizations (American Legion or VFW) to assist in obtaining military funeral honors for eligible veterans. Veteran s United States Burial Flag A flag is provided at no cost to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran. Generally, the flag is given to the next of kin. Only one flag may be provided per veteran. Upon the request of the family, an Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes (VA Form ) must be submitted along with a copy of the veteran s discharge papers. Flags may be obtained from VA regional offices and most U.S. Post Offices. Competent funeral directors should be able to assist the veteran s family in obtaining this flag. Be decisive. Right or wrong, make a decision. The road of life is paved with flat squirrels who couldn t make a decision.
