The Joint Multi-effects Warhead System was tested Aug. 16 at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, Calif. The Navy released the test results Oct 24. A Raytheon news release said the warhead met all performance objectives. The Tomahawk Block IV is now armed with the WDU-36 warhead. JMEWS has all the blast power of that warhead, but it gives the missile greater ability to penetrate hardened targets, such as bunkers, said Raytheon spokesman Mike Nachshen. The warhead creates an initial explosion and a follow-on explosion that would force Block IVs through thicker concrete and steel structures, he said. The exact penetrating capabilities are classified, Nachshen said. The Navy awarded Raytheon a $12.8 million contract in July 2009 for the development of the JMEWS warhead. Work is expected to be completed by January The Block IV came online in 2004 and has since been used in combat, Nachshen said, but the Navy will not divulge in what manner it was used. To date, the Navy has received more than 2,000 of the Block IVs. The latest Tomahawk iteration can be redirected in flight to more than 15 preprogrammable targets. The missile can also loiter over the battlefield waiting for assignment, according to Raytheon s website. The Tomahawk has been a mainstay of naval strike warfare since the Persian Gulf War. It can be launched from cruisers, destroyers and attack submarines. More than 1,900 Tomahawks have been fired in combat, according to the Raytheon site. Page 7
