2 BASE COMMANDER REPORT Dick Wiley CHRISTMAS PARTY You are cordially invited to the annual Hoosier Base USSVI Christmas Party Date: December 2, 2017 Time: Hospitality room open 2:00 Party 4:00 Place: Courtyard by Marriott Columbus Tipton Lake 3888 Mimosa Drive Columbus, Indiana Hotel Phone: We will NOT be having a catered meal. In its place each attendee is asked to bring a tasty hors d Oeuvre or sweet to share and your personal favorite beverage (you may share that too if you wish). All tableware, glasses, napkins, etc will be furnished. The ladies will be having a gift raffle in order to raise additional funds to make ditty bags for the Veteran s Retirement Home. Anyone wanting to help with this project, please bring a raffle gift, wrapped or unwrapped. The gifts, quite often, are pretty fun and unusual. The hotel has given us the party room at no charge. For those spending the night, tell the desk you want the Government Rate The Marriott has always been very accommodating to our group. PLEASE CALL THE HOTEL FOR YOUR RESERVATIONS By November 26th. Be sure to let them know you are with the USSVI group. We always have a great time and what better way to kick off the season that celebrates the birth of our Lord than with special friends. 3 MEMBERSHIP REPORT Tom Barnes, Our 2018 membership renewal period is officially ongoing for annual paying Hoosier Base members. Those members who maintain their membership as regular members and pay annually will immediately receive renewal requests. 4 BASE SECRETARY COMMENTS Harvey Shaw I recently attended the annual USSVI 2017 Convention in Orlando, FL at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort. While there I attended two meetings; the Men s Luncheon and the Holland Club Breakfast. At the luncheon the National Commander addressed membership, dues, funds and thanked all the national officers for performing their duties and thanked all those attending the convention.. At the Holland Club Breakfast the scheduled speaker cancelled and the owner of the resort, Mr. Rosen, spoke about how he started the resort and that he his employees his family. He has established several different funds and scholarship programs for his employees. This years convention was not well attended by the number of Submariners as expected by the Orland Base. Knowing that many of our members are aging, the National Commander wants all bases to increase their membership, hopefully with younger inductees, I also met Erica Leinmiller, LT USN. She is the assistant engineering officer assigned to the USS Florida SSGN 728. She will be qualified by this November and receive her gold dolphins at that time. Next Year's convention will be a 7 day cruise on the Holland American Line to the Caribbean. Check your next American Submariner Magazine for details. The following year, 2019, National Convention will be held in Austin, TX at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. Information will also be available in upcoming American Submariner Magazine issues. Lucas Stone, IC2(SS) Schyler Hurley, TM2(SS) Christian Londono and CS 2(SS) Alonzo Galdamez visited some awesome kids at Riley s Children s Hospital during Navy Week at Indianapolis with Hoosier Base Submarine Veteran, Lee Muller and USS Indiana Commissioning Committee Chairman Ray Shearer for a Kaps 4 Kids event.
