A decadent, chocolate filling resting over a flaky, tender crust makes this dessert to die for. Add a cherry on top to finish it all off with an incredible burst of sweetness. In a small bowl, beat together the butter and cream cheese until smooth. Beat in the flour until incorporated, then drop the dough by the tablespoonful into greased miniature muffin cups. Use floured hands to press the dough into the bottoms and up the sides of the cups. 2.Bake for minutes, or until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely. 3.Chop the chocolate and place in a deep bowl. Heat the cream until it just starts to boil, then pour over the chocolate and let sit for several minutes, or until the chocolate has melted. 4.Use a whisk to begin stirring, starting from the middle until the mixture is uniform. Don t stir too hard, or the chocolate will lose its gloss. 5.Add the butter in small pieces and continue mixing gently until the ganache is uniform. Once the mixture is thick enough, pour straight into the cups. If it is too runny, refrigerate for a few minutes until it thickens. Top with whipped cream, cherries, or raspberries. 6.Enjoy! 8 Find Us At Over 100 Store Drop Locations, In Your Rural Delivery Mail Boxes and Online At Hamilton Cazenovia Animal Hospital Animal Hospital Morale: Tats For Troops April 28, 2015: After years of adding restrictions on potential recruits with tattoos, the U.S. Army has finally relented and as of April 2015 soldiers are no longer limited to how many (and how large) the tattoos they have on arms and legs. There are still restrictions on face, neck and hand tattoos. The latest round of restrictions were imposed in early 2014 and prohibited any tattoos on the head, face, neck, wrists, hands and fingers. Soldiers were allowed a maximum of four visible tattoos below the elbow or knee and there are size restrictions on those. Now one tattoo on a finger is allowed and no restrictions on the arms or legs. This is just the latest policy shift regarding what makes a suitable recruit when tattoos are involved. Until 2006, the Department of Defense paid for laser tattoo removal treatments. Since then, as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ended and more recruits came forward potential recruits have had to pay for these laser treatments themselves, as do those potential recruits who have more tats than the recruiting rules allow. Tattoo removal costs from a few hundred dollars for a small one (no larger than a business card) to thousands for larger multicolor ones. For people with a lot of ink on them, removal is not only expensive but takes several months. CAZENOVIA ELECTRIC Residential & Commercial Installation & Service It was long unclear why the brass at the Pentagon were so hung up on tattoos. Whatever the case the pro-tattoo generals seem to have finally had their way. The reason may be that tattoos have long been a favorite form of self-expression among military personnel. But since the United States eliminated conscription in the early 1970s the military has been less tolerant of recruits with lots of tats, especially visible ones. The three decades to tattoo restrictions had a lot of do with a big increase in the number of people trying to get into the military, especially after The military had to find ways to decide who to accept, and who to reject. Folks with an abundance of tattoos were not welcome, even if the recruiter thought otherwise. The four services (army, navy, air force and marines) all have different rules for tats and those that are having more trouble making their numbers can ease their tattoo rules and get some people the other services turned away just because of the body art. The American military services believe in tradition, but they are increasingly recruiting troops from a population that is less interested in that sort of thing. In fact, the last few generations have adopted lifestyle customs that are quite at odds with what is thought of as a military bearing (how troops look and move). So all the services are increasingly adding rules stipulating how the troops should behave. Tattoos (where they are), piercings (very few), cell phones (how they are carried) and umbrellas (when they are allowed) have all been covered. 351 County Rte 12 (607) Pitcher, NY Lee Bement, Owner Jean Mudge, Office Manager LEE S TRUCK & CAR REPAIR Custom Exhaust Systems Regular & Heavy Duty NY Inspections Four Wheel Alignment Transmission Flush & Fill Computer Diagnostic Major & Minor Repairs Air Conditioning Service Cooling System Flush & Fill -8- Hi, Neighbor Pennysaver, Cazenovia, NY, May 4, 2015 NOW Taking Classified Ads BY PHONE!!! Some of the new rules made official what had long been unofficial custom. Just to make sure the young troops got the message. This is all to cope with the growing popularity of wearing more jewelry, especially with the women. All the services have men and women in the ranks, and by 2010 the marines mandated that you may only have one ring per hand. But the custom of wearing gold or platinum caps on teeth was also out, although waivers were available for those who had permanent caps implanted before October, Also forbidden was chest hair protruding from T-shirts. This one is a bit odd, since the U.S. Air Force has encouraged that sort of thing (but did not make it mandatory.) There are a lot of new rules about how you cannot cut your hair. No sideburns that end in a point (popular among civilians for over a decade) and exotic cuts for men or women. That meant no Mohawk cuts (although this was popular among combat troops during World War II). Also outlawed were spiky hair, dreadlocks or anything that offends your gunny (Gunnery Sergeant, usually a platoon sergeant). The new rules made it official that male marines could shave their heads, but female marines must have at least quarter inch (7mm) length hair. If the female marines have hair that extends below the collar, they must be able to put it up in a bun while on duty. The women did catch one break, in that patterned fingernails (French manicures) were officially allowed. All marines were prohibited from putting their hands in the pockets (except to fetch something) while on base. If you are in combat and its cold, you could stick your hands in your pockets to keep your trigger finger limber. You were also forbidden from walking and drinking at the same time, something which has become common as more people carry a container of water around with them all the time. Some of these items like gold teeth will now keep you from enlisting at all. At the same time there were rules that prohibited anyone with certain types of tattoos from joining. This rule did not ban all tattoos, just those that would be visible while in their PT (Physical Training) uniforms (gym shorts and T-shirt). Marine recruiters complained that the rules kept changing and that it was a hassle to keep current. Most recruiters would prefer it if they were just evaluated on how well those they recruited did during their first year in uniform and forget about a lot of the appearance rules, especially those regarding tats. That suggestion had some supporters at the top but was eventually turned down. Despite all that even the marines eventually had to loosen up and get with the changing times. articles/ aspx Counter-Terrorism: The Special Forces Scrutinize FaceBook April 26, 2015: After years of informally using social networking sites and Internet activity in general to find, monitor and sometimes manipulate terrorist suspects U.S. SOCOM (Special Operations Command) revealed in recent Congressional hearings that this is becoming a more formal technique. This will involve custom software for more effectively searching social media and training SOCOM personnel in how best to handle potentially useful information. This will involve using the cultural and language skills of Special Forces operators to more effectively seek out and evaluate terrorist threats. The Special Forces has one of the largest collections of experienced counter-terrorism operators who know the culture and languages Dr. Jerry Kolb Dr. Alice Marie Donnelly Dr. Anne Galton Healthy Pets, Happy Clients Providing Quality, Compassionate Care For Over 35 Years of areas where there is a lot of Islamic terrorist activity. These soldiers have spent years learning about cultures and languages and honed that knowledge by actually operating in those areas. In addition to combat missions, most of the time Special Forces are usually there for advising and training local forces in their own language and with a knowledge of local languages. The CIA has long seen Special Forces as a primary source of expert analysts and field operatives. Social networking sites and Internet activity has long been a major source of information for intelligence and police agencies. There is an irony in this because sites like Facebook and Twitter are also hailed as catalysts for revolution and social change. While that s true, these sites have also been a big help to those seeking to detect and prevent criminal behavior. This can have fatal consequences in dictatorships, where the police and intel groups can use data gathering and analysis tools (developed for marketing via the Internet) to find people who are protesting or rebelling against the government. Even if these Facebook users are using codes and pseudonyms to remain hidden, the scanning and analysis tools can often uncover them. Twitter traffic can also be analyzed for useful information on who is doing what and where they are. Social networking sites are thus a double edged sword. They can be used to organize, inform, and mobilize large groups. But in doing this you provide the secret police a lot of information you would rather not share with them. Islamic terror groups advise their members to avoid social networking sites, but that has proved hard to enforce. Social networking was designed to be alluring, as well as useful, especially to the young. For young revolutionaries, this can be a fatal attraction. The CIA developed software to gather all this Internet information, filter and organize it and then turn it over to analysts to be sorted out, or, in many cases, translated more accurately. That last bit was necessary because machine translation software can automatically translate all those tweets and postings so that stuff can be identified and put in a data base. But in order to get really useful (to the CIA) intelligence you need skilled linguists and analysts to double check and also find out if the selecting and sorting software needs to be tweaked (it often does). This massive, real-time combing of social media and open (to anyone) message traffic has yielded a much more accurate and timely analysis of political, religious, cultural, and military trends worldwide. It has also made the deployment of agents and other scarce resources (reconnaissance and electronic eavesdropping satellites, aircraft, and ships) more effective. The FBI, Homeland Security, and military intelligence have similar data gathering and analysis systems for gathering all sorts of useful information. Other nations are establishing similar systems, often using commercial software sold to marketing firms and large corporations. articles/ aspx Q: What do you call Alpacas taking over the world? While the army was inclined the just say yes, find out what quotas the politicians wanted and go through the motions, others refused to play along. SOCOM (Special Operations Command) and the marines pointed out that the research does not support the political demands and that actually implementing the quotas could get people killed while degrading the effectiveness of the units involved. This is yet another reason why many politicians do not like the marines and are uneasy about SOCOM. But action had to be taken and orders were orders. The various services opened up some infantry training programs to women and have discovered two things. First (over 90 percent) of women did not want to serve in any combat unit, especially the infantry. Those women (almost all of them officers) who tried out discovered what female athletes and epidemiologists (doctors who study medical statistics) have long known; women are ten times more likely (than men) to suffer bone injuries and nearly as likely to suffer muscular injuries while engaged in stressful sports (like basketball) or infantry operations. Mental stress is another issue and most women who volunteered to try infantry training dropped out within days because of the combination of mental and physical stress. Proponents of women in combat (none of them combat veterans) dismiss these issues as minor and easily fixed, but offer no tangible or proven solutions. Marshall's Contracting Back in 2012 the U.S. Army and Marine Corps were ordered to come up with procedures to select women capable of handling infantry and special operations assignments and then recruit some women for these jobs. This had become an obsession with many politicians. None of these proponents of women in the infantry have ever served in the infantry, but they understood that if they proceeded without proof that women could handle the job, that decision could mean getting a lot of American soldiers and marines killed. The politicians also knew that if it came to that, the military could be blamed for not implementing the new policy correctly. So far the tests, overseen by monitors reporting back to civilian officials in Congress and the White House, have failed to find the needed proof that women can handle infantry combat. The main problem the military has is their inability to make these politicians understand how combat operations actually work and what role sheer muscle plays in success, or simply survival. But many politicians have become obsessed with the idea that women should serve in the infantry and are ignoring the evidence. All this comes after decades of allowing women to take jobs that were more and more likely to result in women having to deal with combat. Not infantry combat, but definitely dangerous situations where you were under attack and had to fight back or die. Despite the ban many women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan found themselves in firefights and exposed to roadside bombs, something that s normal for a combat zone. Because women were earlier allowed to serve in MP (military police) units and serve regularly on convoy duty they got some combat experience. Those convoys often included other female troops who were trained to fight back, if necessary. It was usually the MPs who did the fighting and the female MPs performed well. Several of them received medals for exceptional performance in combat. Hundreds of these female MPs were regularly in combat since September 11, This was the largest and longest exposure of American female troops to direct combat. Yet women have often been exposed to a lot of indirect combat. As far back as World War II, 25 percent of all troops in the army found themselves under fire at one time or another, although only about 15 percent of soldiers had a direct combat job. In Iraq women made up about 14 percent of the military personnel but only two percent of the casualties (dead and wounded). Most women do not want to be in combat but those who did get the job proved that they could handle it and knew that being in combat as an MP was not the same as doing it in an infantry unit. This experience, however, did provide proof to some that women could perform in infantry or special operations type combat. All this is actually an ancient problem. The issue of women in combat has long been contentious. Throughout history women have performed well in combat but mainly in situations where pure physical force was not a major factor. For example, women often played a large, and often decisive, part of the defending force in sieges. Many women learned to use the light bow (for hunting). While not as lethal as the heavy bows (like the English longbow), when the situation got desperate the female archers made a difference, especially if it was shooting a guys coming over the wall with rape and general mayhem in mind. MID-YORK CHIMNEY & STOVE,LLC Chimney Sweeping, Relining, Masonry Restoration, Chimney Caps, Prefabricated Chimneys, Stove & Fireplace Accessories Over 24 Years Experience - Insured - Member NYS Chimney Sweep Guild National Fireplace Institute (NFI) Certified Stove Installer Once lightweight firearms appeared in the 18th and 19th centuries women were even deadlier in combat. Again, this only occurred in combat situations where the superior physical strength and sturdiness of men was not a factor. Much of infantry operations are all about the grunts (as infantry are often called) just moving themselves and their heavy loads into position for a fight. Here the sturdiness angle was all about the fact that men have more muscle and thicker bones. This makes men much less likely to suffer stress fractures or musculoskeletal injuries than women. This phenomenon has been noted as women became more active in sports like basketball. Modern infantry combat is intensely physical, and most women remain at a disadvantage here. There are some exception for specialist tasks that do not involve sturdiness or strength, like sniping. Then there is the hormonal angle. Men generate a lot more testosterone, a hormone that makes men more decisive and faster to act in combat. Moreover testosterone does not, as the popular myth goes, make you more aggressive, it does make you more aware and decisive. That makes a difference in combat. The main problem today is that the average load for a combat infantryman is over 40 kg (88 pounds) and men (in general) have always had more muscle, upper body strength and the ability to handle heavy loads better than women. But in situations like convoy escort, base security, or support jobs in the combat zone the combat load is lower and more manageable for women. At that point there s plenty of recent evidence that women can handle themselves in combat. That said, women, more than men, prefer to avoid serving in combat units. During the last decade American recruiters found it easier to find young men for combat units than for support jobs. It s mainly female officers who demand the right to try out for combat jobs. But when the marines allowed 14 female marines to take the infantry officer course, none could pass and all agreed that they were treated just like the male trainees. This was not a unique situation. Because of the strenuous nature of combat jobs (armor, artillery, and engineers, as well as infantry) there are physical standards for these occupations. The U.S. military calls it a profile and if you do not have the physical profile for a job, you can t have it. Thus while many men are not physically fit for the infantry, even fewer women are. For example, 55 percent of women cannot do the three pull-ups required in the physical fitness test, compared to only one percent of men. Some women could meet the physical standards and be eager to have the job. But Western nations (including Canada) that have sought to recruit physically qualified female candidates for the infantry found few volunteers and even fewer who could meet the profile and pass the training. So while it is theoretically possible that there are some women out there who could handle the physical requirements, none have so far come forward to volunteer for infantry duty. A recent survey of female soldiers in the U.S. Army found that over 92 percent would not be interested in having an infantry job. Over wo years of American research into the matter concluded that about three percent of women could be trained to the point where they were at the low end of the physically qualified people (male or female) for infantry combat. What that bit of data ignores is how many of those physically strong women would want a career in the infantry or special operations. There would be a few, but for the politicians who want women represented in infantry units this would smack of tokenism. Moreover this comes at a time when physical standards for American infantry and special operations troops have been increasing, because this was found to produce more effective troops and lower American casualties. WATER WELL DRILLING AMBER Wells - Water Treatment - Pumps Since 1968 One area where women are sometimes recruited for infantry combat is in commando and paramilitary intelligence organizations. This is kept secret but having a combat-qualified woman along on some missions can be the key to success. While these women usually cannot carry as much weight, they often have language, cultural, and other skills that make them an essential part of the team. Exceptions can be made for exceptional people and the exceptional missions where they can be decisive. Women have long served as spies, and this is apparently how women came to become part of some commando organizations. When the U.S. used conscription the infantry ended up with a lot of less-muscular and enthusiastic men in the infantry. Allowances were made for this, but for elite units (paratroopers, commandos) there were no corners cut and everyone had to volunteer and meet high physical standards. That made a very noticeable difference in the combat abilities of the elite unit. Now all infantry are recruited to those old elite standards and it would wreck morale and decrease the number of male volunteers if it was mandated that some less physically qualified women be able to join infantry units. This doesn t bother a lot of politicians but it does bother the guys out there getting shot at. Meanwhile over the last century women have been increasingly a part of the military. In most Western nations over ten percent of military personnel are female. In the U.S. military it s now 15 percent. A century ago it was under one percent (and most of those were nurses and other medical personnel). More women are in uniform now because there aren t enough qualified men, especially for many of the technical jobs armed forces now have to deal with. This became popular within the military because the women were often better at these support jobs. This led to women being allowed to serve on American combat ships in In most NATO countries between 5-10 percent of sailors are women, while in Britain it is 10 percent, and in the United States 16 percent. Once women were allowed to fly combat aircraft, it was only a matter of time before some of them rose to command positions. Currently, about ten percent of navy officers are female, as are nine percent of enlisted personnel. Only 4.2 percent of navy aviators (pilots) are women, as are 6.9 percent of flight officers (non-pilot aircrew). In the air force five percent of pilots are women. Women now command warships and air combat units (including fighter squadrons). Some women, and their political supporters, want to do the same thing in the infantry and special operations. If only the physical problems could be taken care of. During World War II over five million women served in the military, although they suffered fewer losses than the men, several hundred thousand did die. These women were often exposed to combat, especially when fighting as guerillas or operating anti-aircraft guns and early warning systems in Russia, Germany, and Britain. Russia also used women as traffic cops near the front line, as snipers, and as combat pilots. They tried using them as tank crews and regular infantry, but that didn t work out, a historical lesson lost on current proponents. Women were most frequently employed in medical and other support jobs. The few who served as snipers or pilots were very good at it. Most of the women who served in combat did so in guerilla units, especially in the Balkans and Russia. The women could not haul as heavy a load as the men but this was often not crucial, as many guerillas were only part-time fighters, living as civilians Vanities Kitchens Furniture 2509 Perry Shumaker Road, Munnsville, NY (315) Any reasonable offer will be accepted. Full time guerilla units often imposed the death penalty for pregnancy, although the women sometimes would not name the father. That said, guerilla organizations often imposed the death penalty for a number of offenses. The guerillas had few places to keep prisoners and sloppiness could get a lot of guerillas killed. The women tended to be more disciplined than the men and just as resolute in combat. In the last century there have been several attempts to use women in ground combat units, and all have failed. When given a choice, far fewer women will choose combat jobs (infantry, armor, artillery). But duty as MPs does attract a lot of women, as do jobs like fighter, bomber, helicopter pilots and crews, and aboard warships. That works. Meanwhile the casualty rate for women in Iraq was over ten times what it was in World War II, Vietnam, and the 1991 Gulf War (where 30,000 women served). A lot of the combat operations experienced by women in Iraq involved base security or guard duty. Female troops performed well in that. These were jobs that required alertness, attention to detail, and ability to quickly use your weapons when needed. Carrying a heavy load was not required. In convoy operations women have also done well, especially when it comes to spotting, and dealing with, IEDs (roadside bombs and ambushes). Going into the 21st century, warfare is becoming more automated and less dependent on muscle and testosterone. That gives women an edge, and they exploit it, just as they have done in so many other fields. Meanwhile the military has been ordered to continue conducting experiments in order to find a way to justify allowing females in the infantry and special operations troops. After that comes the difficulty in finding women who are willing to volunteer and pass whatever standards survive. aspx CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER? Unfortunately, we non-magical folk are bound by the laws of physics, which have a way of preventing such fantastical escapes. Real-life invisibility cloaks do exist, in a manner of speaking: researchers have engineered systems that bend light around an object, shielding it from detection. But most are very tiny and only work at very small wavelength ranges, rendering them less impressive to the average observer. Now, a group of researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in Karlsruhe, Germany, has developed a portable invisibility cloak that can be taken into classrooms and used for demonstrations. It can t hide a human, but it can make small objects disappear from sight without specialized equipment. Scientists hoping to divert light around an object to render it invisible must find a way to compensate for the increased distance the light must now travel. On a road trip, you might solve this problem by changing your speed. The greater distance is offset by the higher speed limit. Unfortunately, light is a bit more challenging than a station wagon. Because relativity prevents mass from traveling faster than the vacuum speed of light, there s no way to further speed up the detoured light in a vacuum or in air. To address this challenge, the KIT team constructed their cloak from a light-scattering material. By scattering light, the material slows down the effective propagation speed of the light waves through the medium. Then the light can be sped up again to make up for the longer path length around the hidden object. In this cloak, the object to be concealed is placed inside a hollow metal cylinder coated with acrylic paint, which diffusely reflects light. The tube is embedded within a block of polydimethylsiloxane, a commonly used organic polymer, doped with titanium dioxide nanoparticles that make it scatter light. Our cloak takes advantage of the much lower effective propagation speed in light-scattering media, said Robert Schittny, who led the research project. As we seemingly slow down the light everywhere, speeding it up again in the cloak to make up for the longer path around the core is not a DRY WALL - HANGING & FINISHING Swirl Ceilings All Plaster Repair Interior Painting Remodeling Dryvit Stucco Free Estimates 30 Years Experience Randy L. If the average time it takes light to travel through the polydimethylsiloxane block is in just the right proportion to the average time it takes to travel through the cloak, the core will become invisible. On the other hand, the completely solid-state cloak can be easily transported to classrooms. It is a macroscopic cloak that you can look at with your bare eyes and hold in your hands, said Schittny. With a reasonably strong flashlight in a not too bright room, it is very easy to demonstrate the cloaking. That means no fancy lab equipment, no microscopes, no postprocessing of measurement data. The effect is just there for everyone to see. Schittny and his colleagues hope their cloak will be used in classrooms and labs to excite and educate students about physics. I was in the process of ringing out a female customer who had a rough time of it recently in their life. She had been in the night before and was back again to determine what she could afford to purchase. She was trying to buy comforters for herself and her two young sons. She had decided to purchase what she could afford last evening which was one comforter. She counted out all of the cash she had and then used her debit card to make the rest of the purchase. A gentlemen, waiting to make his purchase, watched quietly and motioned to me as I was bagging up the comforter for the woman. He told me he wanted to buy everything else for her. I asked him if he was sure. He nodded. I quickly and quietly rang out the rest of the purchases while I asked the female customer to wait a moment. The total came to over 200. The man provided me with his credit card without blinking. He signed and off he went. I then told the female customer that all of the items were hers and she was checked out and ready to go. She stared at me with complete shock on her face. The the tears started. I started crying also. In ten years of working this particular part-time job, I have NEVER witnessed such compassion and selflessness. There are good, no great, people in this world. By my own I mean my own time, my own effort and my own money. I have always come out learning more than if I had learned through someone/ something else. For a long time, I thought the best way to learn was for a company to give me an opportunity. With the opportunity, I could have the experience and then learn from it. That works to a certain extent. I had the theory backwards. What I ve come to realize is that YOU must learn to gain the experience and THEN you should be given the opportunity. If you learn through the opportunity, you are learning through the eyes of someone/something else. Learning through an opportunity gives you a limited level of understanding. When it is on your own time and your own money, it means so much more. You don t have big budgets or have all day to learn. We as individuals have limited resources compared to companies. Thus, you are a lot more considerate of time and money. Once having the experience of learning on your own, you operate with a different level efficiency and effectiveness. I highly recommend investing your time and money into learning something new. Take the time and make the investment of learning before taking the leap in to a new job. You ll learn a lot. Indeed, as they passed down the street, all the people cheered them lustily, and the Shaggy Man and the Wizard and the Captain General all took off their hats and bowed politely in acknowledgment. When they came to the great wall of the Emerald City, the gates were opened by the Guardian who always tended them. Over the gateway hung a dull-colored metal magnet shaped like a horse-shoe, placed against a shield of polished gold. That, said the Shaggy Man, impressively, is the wonderful Love Magnet. But Uncle Henry and Aunt Em had some trouble in getting used to the finery and pomp and ceremony of Ozma s palace, and felt uneasy because they were obliged to be dressed up all the time. Yet every one was very courteous and kind to them and endeavored to make them happy. Ozma, especially, made much of Dorothy s relatives, for her little friend s sake, and she well knew that the awkwardness and strangeness of their new mode of life would all wear off in time. The old people were chiefly troubled by the fact that there was no work for them to do. Ev ry day is like Sunday, now, declared Aunt Em, solemnly, and I can t say I like it. If they d only let me do up the dishes after meals, or even sweep an dust my own rooms, I d be a deal happier. Henry don t know what to do with himself either, and once when he stole out an fed the chickens Billina scolded him for letting em eat between meals. I never knew before what a hardship it is to be rich and have everything you want. These complaints began to worry Dorothy; so she had a long talk with Ozma upon the subject. I see I must find them something to do, said the girlish Ruler of Oz, seriously. I have been watching your uncle and aunt, and I believe they will be more contented if occupied with some light tasks. While I am considering this matter, Dorothy, you might make a trip with them through the Land of Oz, visiting some of the odd corners and introducing your relatives to some of our curious people. Oh, that would be fine! exclaimed Dorothy, eagerly. I will give you an escort befitting your rank as a Princess, continued Ozma; and you may go to some of the places you have not yet visited yourself, as well as some others that you know. I will mark out a plan of the trip for you and have everything in readiness for you to start to-morrow morning. Take your time, dear, and be gone as long as you wish. By the time you return I shall have found some occupation for Uncle Henry and Aunt Em that will keep them from being restless and dissatisfied. Dorothy thanked her good friend and kissed the lovely Ruler gratefully. Then she ran to tell the joyful news to her uncle and aunt. Next morning, after breakfast, everything was found ready for their departure. The escort included Omby Amby, the Captain General of Ozma s army, which consisted merely of twenty-seven officers besides the Captain General. Once Omby Amby had been a private soldier--the only private in the army--but as there was never any fighting to do Ozma saw no need of a private, so she made Omby Amby the highest officer of them all. He was very tall and slim and wore a gay uniform and a fierce mustache. Yet the mustache was the only fierce thing about Omby Amby, whose nature was as gentle as that of a child. The wonderful Wizard had asked to join the party, and with him came his friend the Shaggy Man, who was shaggy but not ragged, being dressed in fine silks with satin shags and bobtails. The Shaggy Man had shaggy whiskers and hair, but a sweet disposition and a soft, pleasant voice. There was an open wagon, with three seats for the passengers, and the wagon was drawn by the famous wooden Sawhorse which had once been brought to life by Ozma by means of a magic powder. The Sawhorse wore wooden shoes to keep his wooden legs from wearing away, and he was strong and swift. As this curious creature was Ozma s own favorite steed, and very popular with all the people of the Emerald City, Dorothy knew that she had been highly favored by being permitted to use the Sawhorse on her journey. In the front seat of the wagon sat Dorothy and the Wizard. Uncle Henry and Aunt Em sat in the next seat and the Shaggy Man and Omby Amby in the third seat. Of course Toto was with the party, curled up at Dorothy s feet, and just as they were about to start, Billina came fluttering along the path and begged to be taken with them. Dorothy readily agreed, so the Yellow Hen flew up and perched herself upon the dashboard. She wore her pearl necklace and three bracelets upon each leg, in honor of the occasion. Dorothy kissed Ozma good-bye, and all the people standing around waved their handkerchiefs, and the band in an upper balcony struck up a military march. Then the Wizard clucked to the Sawhorse and said: Gid-dap! and the wooden animal pranced away and drew behind him the big red wagon and all the passengers, without any effort at all. A servant threw open Which is very sensible, declared the Wizard, nodding approvingly. Which way do we go, Dorothy? Straight ahead into the Quadling Country, she answered. I ve got a letter of interduction to Miss Cuttenclip. Oh! exclaimed the Wizard, much interested. Are we going there? Then I m glad I came, for I ve always wanted to meet the Cuttenclips. Who are they? inquired Aunt Em. Wait till we get there, replied Dorothy, with a laugh; then you ll see for yourself. I ve never seen the Cuttenclips, you know, so I can t zactly splain em to you. Once free of the Emerald City the Sawhorse dashed away at tremendous speed. Indeed, he went so fast that Aunt Em had hard work to catch her breath, and Uncle Henry held fast to the seat of the red wagon. Gently--gently, my boy! called the Wizard, and at this the Sawhorse slackened his speed. What s wrong? asked the animal, slightly turning his wooden head to look at the party with one eye, which was a knot of wood. Why, we wish to admire the scenery, that s all, answered the Wizard. Some of your passengers, added the Shaggy Man, have never been out of the Emerald City before, and the country is all new to them. If you go too fast you ll spoil all the fun, said Dorothy. There s no hurry. More Next Week
