Ningbo (literally tranquil waves ) is one of the greenest and least polluted cities in China. It is a port city with a rich cultural heritage. The city is a great size, easy enough to get to know but big enough to find new things all the time. Shanghai is 30 minutes by plane or a 4 hour train journey. The construction of the 36km Hangzhou Bay Bridge allows cars and buses to reach Shanghai in only 2 hours. A bus ticket to Shanghai is very cheap at 100 Yuan. The trip is a must; the largest city in China is a multicultural metropolis with an amazing mix of the ancient and hi-tech Western civilisation. *Correct at 30 th October 2010 Accommodation University accommodation in the new International Students Residence Hall is guaranteed to all International students who apply by the accommodation deadline. All rooms are for single occupancy and students share a kitchen on each floor. When students arrive on campus to begin their studies they are expected to pay the accommodation fee in full, which is currently 6000RMB per semester (approx 500). Students are required to pay water and electricity fees and there is a free cleaning service twice a month. Climate Due to its coastal location and subtropical monsoon climate, Ningbo is subject to temperate and humid weather. The mean annual temperature is 16.2 C. Travel opportunities China's capital city Beijing is only a two hour flight from Ningbo. Beijing has many places of historic interest and architectural beauty including the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the world renowned Great Wall. In addition the city boasts many modern buildings and the super-modern Olympic Village, with the Bird s Nest Stadium and Water Cube. Previous students recommend travelling to Beijing in Golden Week. Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, is one of the more modern and prosperous cities in China, about 60 miles south-west of Shanghai. It sits at the southern end of the Grand Canal and is one of China's seven ancient national capitals. Ningbo Lishe International Airport connects Ningbo by air to the rest of China, with regularly scheduled flights. A taxi from the University to Ningbo airport takes about 30 minutes and costs 30-50RMB. Further information /prospectivestudents/furtherinformation.aspx

28 Financing your Study Abroad period One of the biggest myths is that Study Abroad will cost the earth. Studying abroad need not be more expensive than studying in Nottingham; in fact some students have actually managed to save money! However all exchange students need to be aware that they are responsible for paying for their own accommodation, travel, insurance, visa costs (if applicable) and all other living expenses whilst studying or working abroad and so budgeting is very important. Tuition Fees All University of Nottingham students who participate in one of the University s exchange programmes pay their tuition fees to Nottingham as usual. No tuition fees are paid to the host university/campus. Tuition Fee Reductions For students studying abroad for the full academic year through the Universitas 21, Universitywide, International Exchange or Inter-Campus programmes, your fee liability will be halved i.e. if you are liable for 3,290 fees, you will be liable for 1,610 in your year abroad. All UK students who spend a full academic year abroad on the Erasmus programme are currently exempt from paying any tuition fees to the University of Nottingham for the study abroad period due to Government regulations. All students studying abroad for one semester pay their full tuition fees to Nottingham as usual. This is also the case for students who are studying abroad for one semester through the Erasmus programme and one semester through another programme. University Core Bursary If you have received a bursary in previous years, and your circumstances haven t changed, you will be entitled to the same level of bursary you were in receipt of in previous years. Student Loans If you study abroad (for a period of at least eight weeks) as part of your degree programme, you may be eligible for an overseas rate of loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC). In 2010/2011 the maximum loan for study overseas is 5,895 (or 5,125 if you study abroad during the final year of your course.) 28% of this will be means-tested against household income. Students working abroad, even if they are not paid, will only be entitled to a reduced rate of Student Loan. In 2010/2011 this is 2,780 (or 2,031 if you study abroad during the final year of your course.) For further information on Tuition Fees and Loans, contact: Financial Support Team Student Services Centre, B Floor, Portland Building, University Park Open Mon-Fri 9.30am-5pm t: e: financialsupport@nottingham.ac.uk Erasmus Grants The Erasmus EU wide exchange scheme is the largest of its kind in the world and supports over 400 students from the University of Nottingham each year to undertake a study or work placement abroad as part of their studies. All students undertaking an approved Erasmus exchange in will need to apply for an Erasmus grant which is around 350 per month in the year. * All national support information is provided to the best of our knowledge at the time of writing on October however this may be subject to change as funding systems are considered under the findings of the Browne Review reporting in autumn 2010.
29 Financing your Study Abroad period U21 and University wide travel bursaries The International Office is constantly striving to reduce the barriers for students to study abroad as part of their Nottingham degree. We know that studying abroad requires students to budget carefully and to be aware of costs overseas but we also annually review the budget we are allocated with regard to extra bursaries or awards for students undertaking a period of study abroad through the Universitas 21 and University wide exchange programmes in order to assist as many students as we can in order to remove some of these barriers. In , 45% of all students undertaking a semester abroad through the Universitas 21 or University wide received some financial support from one of the International Office schemes and we aim to increase this figure in Details of the various financial support schemes in place are described below. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Study Abroad team at studyabroad@nottingham.ac.uk Vice-Chancellor s Award for International Travel In recognition of the ongoing support from the Vice-Chancellor in the area of study abroad all students attending the following universities on exchange in will each receive an automatic bursary of 250 paid to them prior to the start of their studies overseas.
