2 Our Mission Our Mission To be the leading provider of scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society and the preferred professional development source for our members. Our Members Our Members IEEE is the world s leading professional association for the advancement of technology and consists of societies, technical councils and technical communities. The Power & Energy Society (PES) is one of the largest societies within IEEE. Around the globe, PES members are involved in the planning, research, development, construction, installation and operation of equipment and systems for the safe, reliable and economic generation, transmission, distribution, measurement and control of electric energy. PES members are also involved with many aspects of the industry, including asset management, wholesale market design and operation, restructuring, renewable integration, distributed generation and smart grid advancement. PES members include those from industry, manufacturing and academia having technical interests in the electric power and energy industry. 4 T Outreach Worldwide Initiatives and Outreach The global power and energy industry is dynamic and ever changing. Recognizing this dynamic environment, the Power & Energy Society is responding to the ongoing needs of its membership through new initiatives and outreach. As your professional organization, we are committed to developing new concepts, initiatives and relationships that are important during this dynamic period, and we are dedicated to building the infrastructure to sustain them within the traditional organization. Integral worldwide initiatives are to: Investigate and pursue new region-specific periodicals Identify specialized conferences Develop online educational modules i Outre ach Around the World Recent examples of Society outreach have included: PES representation at the conference celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Chinese Electrical Engineering Higher Education in Xi an, China, keynoting at the Electric Utility Deregulation and Restructuring Power Technologies conference in Nanjing, China and providing leadership for energy conferences with other societies. Establish external collaboration efforts with related power and energy organizations to address multidisciplinary topics such as hydrogen economy, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, carbon management technologies and renewables.

Gain a deep technical appreciation and influence the present and future technologies used in the power and energy industry by participating in the IEEE Technical Committees. 6 Activities PTechnical Activities Designed to be on the Cutting Edge My membership in PES has allowed me the opportunity to network and interact with colleagues from around the world. The exchange of information with my peers has been a valuable asset as I continue to address the energy and power challenges of the future. Prabha S. Kundur, Kundur Power Systems Solutions Inc. PES has been advancing the value of power and energy professionals for more than a century through member resources and as a collective voice of the profession. As an active member of the PES, you are demonstrating your commitment to a high standard of professional ethics, furthering your professional development and advancing the value of the profession. In addition to transmission, substation, generation, and distribution issues, PES is responding to the growing public interest in energy efficiency, global warming, climate change, the carbon footprint, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, the smart grid, renewable energy sources and micro-generation. PES is providing the technical leadership that can and will impact the world power and the energy industry in a number of significant ways. As a member of PES you have the opportunity to become involved in any one of 17 technical committees and the 4 coordinating committees that are focused on Emerging Technologies, Policy Development, Standards and Wind Power. Through participation in a committee or a working group, you can realize and recognize the impact of your contribution during one of the most dynamic periods in the history of the power and energy industry. Standards Development. PES is one of the largest contributors to IEEE Standards, a collection that includes some of the most influential standards in electric power technology and engineering. With a sustained outreach effort through its 180 chapters, PES has an effective means of surveying the world to determine the need for new standards that must be reaffirmed every five years. The Society uses the information gathered from its chapters to address an unmet need and to create a worldwide standard that can function within the ever-evolving global economy. Thousands of members, manufacturers and users meet in hundreds of working groups, to exchange ideas and develop documents that literally set the standard. Standards are continuously being conducted and recommendations presented and reviewed. Importantly, through PES, members also have the opportunity to stay current about work on IEC Standards, as well as access IEC Technical Advisory Groups, plus have an opportunity to become experts on IEC working groups. Emerging Technological Trends. The Society is actively involved in maximizing energy efficiency and

7 pursuing workable energy alternatives. Several new PES technical initiatives are being pursued, including: the SmartGrid, energy rating standards for batteries; characterizing and assessing emerging energy storage devices; developing guides, standards and modeling techniques for wind power and its interconnections; publicizing new energy conversion and storage methods; and developing calculation technologies for wind-capacity credits. Electronic Information. The speed and accuracy of information and the ability to communicate and deliver it to the Society membership is a focus of technical activity within PES. In its technical activity agenda, the Society has put forth as one of its primary objectives to create additional tutorials, stand-alone courses and Webinars designed to convey practical application-oriented materials. To that end, the Society is involved in exploring methods that will enable members to engage and interact with experts and knowledge-based presenters at meetings through online and voice-over technologies such as Webex or Live Meeting. As an active member, you can expect to see increased efforts in the area of special electronic publishing. A number of practical oriented special publications have been identified, and an ongoing effort will be to incorporate all of the selected subjects as official products in the Digital Electronic Library that will be available to PES members through a power-related community in IEEE Xplore. Collaborative Efforts. Members will also benefit from the collaborative efforts between the technical committees and with other societies. Through these collaborative efforts, cross-cutting standards and opportunities for joint meetings will be pursued. One such effort has been organized between IAS and PES in which IAS has introduced the PES color book rewrite and asked PES members to contribute. Color books cover dozens of different facets of the electric power engineering standards developed by IAS and the IEEE Standards Association. It is anticipated that, through these efforts, opportunities for joint authorship will increase, creating the possibility for jointly-sponsored identified tutorials. Paper Quality. The Society has focused on improving the quality of papers and technical activity organization at the General Meeting by repackaging the content to have multiple committees sponsor sessions and assigning an Editorin-Chief to oversee the review process to improve conference paper quality. 8 Education TDelivering Education to Every Corner of the Globe Through my affiliation with PES and work on standards, I ve improved my level of technical expertise and had the opportunity to work with my peers to make an impact on our industry. IEEE PES is the one organization that enables you to learn at every step in your career through close association with industry icons from around the globe. Cheryl A. Warren, IEEE PES 2007 Excellence in Power Distribution Award winner The goal of worldwide education at PES is to ensure the growth of skills and knowledge among the technical profession and to foster individual commitment to continuing education among Society members, the technical community and the general public. PES intends to work with a number of different agencies in an outreach program to identify educational programs and modules for the benefit of its membership and to build out its inventory of education offerings. The Society is ideally positioned to share its expertise and embark upon an effort to inventory existing materials and to continue to build an educational suite for members and nonmembers. PES is striving to become the preferred source for continuing education credits (CEUs) in the industry. PES offers a robust education program at all of its worldwide conferences and events. Education is offered by PES through workshops, tutorials, stand-alone training and online educational offerings. Programs have included hundreds of technical and general topics facing today s power and energy professional. While stand-alone classes will receive the most attention in the next couple of years, efforts will be underway to develop more comprehensive online offerings thar ultimately a regional chapter can host. As a PES member, you have access to all of these exciting education programs listed below and on the opposite page. They are all an integral part of your active PES membership. IEEE Expert Now. Online offerings are available through IEEE Expert Now on emerging technologies. These modules are interactive, one-hour online learning courses developed by recognized experts in a wide range of engineering and research technologies and are delivered to your desktop 24/7. IEEE Expert Now enables members to earn continuing education units (CEUs) and professional develop hours (PDHs) from educational courses and tutorials that have been conducted at conferences and workshops around the world. Plain Talk Courses for Non-Engineering Professionals. These courses will provide a basic understanding of the electric power system and is

9 designed to improve communication with technical associates and facilitate an understanding of the decision-making process. Attendees gain an insight into the concerns of engineers, the demands of regulators and consumers groups and the perspectives of how these factors play a major role in the operation of today s electric power systems. Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP). This program is offered by the PES for the benefit of its Chapter members. The Society has prepared a list of lecturers to deliver presentations on topics of interest to the members of PES Chapters. The primary objective of the DLP is to provide the educational support the Chapters need to develop informative and engaging programs on a variety of topics ranging from research to the practical application of technology. Tutorials and Workshops. Recognizing that today s rapidly evolving electric utility industry requires that engineers understand the business side of the equation as well as the technical, tutorials are offered covering the business aspects of the industry. Tutorials are conducted at many conferences and expositions and are organized in a number of locations around the world. One of the benefits that members enjoy is access to information at significantly less cost than commercially offered seminar and PES works to ensure that the materials presented are objective and without commercialism. Within its tutorial format PES has offered such topics as: engineering ethics, reliability, cyber security, smart metering and static var compensation. Paper and Panel Sessions. Conducted at a number of PES conferences and meetings are organized and sponsored by the various PES technical committees and are chaired by recognized experts and thought leaders in the field. The sessions provide valuable and current information and state-of-the art technologies, recent operating experiences and up-to-date product performance data. Get RecogNIzed WIth a pes award for E xcellence IN the Profession PES presents several awards for engineering excellence in a wide variety of fields in power and energy. Many of them, but not all, are mentioned here--the Award for Excellence in Power Distribution Engineering, Charles Concordia Power Systems Engineering Award, Cyril Veinott Electromechanical Energy Conversion Award, Nari Hingorani Custom Power Award, Outstanding Chapter Award, Prize Paper Award, Uno Lamm High Voltage Direct Current Award.

10 RPublications Online and Print Publications Offer a Link Researchers around the world rely on IEEE and PES journals, magazines, conference proceedings and books on standards as the most essential information focusing on technology today. PES improves and strengthens the connection to professional knowledge by sponsoring a range of periodicals and archival publications within its technical specialties. As a PES member, you have the opportunity to contribute in a number of ways to the PES publications effort through technical paper authorship, serving as a reviewer, editor or as a contributing author to Power & Energy magazine. The Society publishes more than 2000 papers and articles every year. Members are encouraged to access the PES home page to find out more about these important volunteer opportunities and contributions. IEEE Xplore. A digital library providing full-text access to the world s highest quality technical literature on engineering, computer science and electronics. Xplore contains full-text documents from IEEE transactions, magazines, letters, conference proceedings, standards and IET publications. The Xplore legacy database is constantly being updated and expanded as it is one of the primary publication vehicles from which members receive their information. Xplore contains more than 1.3 million documents, more than 25,000 pages added each month, peer-reviewed journals, transactions, letters and magazines, IEEE Spectrum Magazine and proceedings of the IEEE. Includes electronic access to the full text and graphics of every article back to 1988 including IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, Power Delivery and Power Systems. Available through IEEE Xplore, the online delivery platform is available for all IEEE technical information. Conference Proceedings. As a professional working in the power and energy field, conference proceedings can be an invaluable reference tool. Conference proceedings include summaries of all conference presentations made at General Meetings, at the Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition, at the

11 Power Systems Conferences and Exposition, and at most other meetings. Peer-Reviewed Archival-Grade Technical Papers. Published quarterly in IEEE PES Transactions these papers contain the world s most scholarly leading-edge work in the fields of: power delivery, power systems and energy conversion. IEEE PES Letters. These include peer-reviewed technical papers that are limited to two pages in length and involve the publication of new results, discoveries and developments. They provide for the rapid dissemination of original ideas and significant contributions in applications, case studies and research in all areas with particular emphasis on defining emerging problems. They are published as a special section in the appropriate IEEE PES Transactions. IEEE Power & Energy magazine. Written for PES members this publication is dedicated to the dissemination of information on matters of interest to electric power and energy professionals and others involved in the profession. Power & Energy magazine features information on the technologies and practices associated with all aspects of electric power. It has addressed such subjects as infrastructure security, energy and the environment, renewable resources, asset management, the aging infrastructure and blackouts. Power & Energy magazine maintains an editorial board of some of the top experts in the field who understand both the technical language and the concepts of the industry. These experts communicate this in-depth understanding to the members of the Society. In each issue of the magazine, the following columns are included: From the Editor, Letters to the Editor, Leader s Corner, Guest Editorial, Standards Corner, Society News, History, Awards, Industry News, New Products and In My View. As PES members search for solutions, they rely on the magazine for well-crafted articles that address the changing dynamics of the industry. PES e-newsletter. For more information access, click on the Chapters tab. t Wo awards that Can Set Your Chapter Apart The Outstanding Engineer Award program allows each Chapter to recognize the outstanding contributions of local engineers. Each Chapter can establish its own selection criteria to include: technical contributions to the field, leadership contributions, significant contributions to the local community, outstanding contributions in the area of education and service to PES or IEEE. Similarly an Outstanding Chapter Award is awarded to the chapter that is judged as having provided its membership with the best overall set of program and activities. The Chapter award is recognized for achieving overall excellence in Chapter operations at the annual General Meeting Awards Luncheon. Each Chapter is judged on providing the greatest overall contribution and service to its members in the following categories: Technical Activities, Societal Activities, Membership Advancement, Fellow Nominations and Awards, Enlistment of New Members. PES-sponsored conferences may have proceedings published in Xplore making the contents accessible worldwide. PES provides multiple levels of financial and technical sponsorships of conferences in cooperation with other organizations. PES is interested in adding new conferences to span the wide range of industry interests and emerging technologies. IEEE PES General Meeting: The premier PES conference featuring a comprehensive program focusing on power and energy. This annual global forum includes paper and panel sessions, technical tours, tutorials on state-of-the-art topics, a student program, PES awards and several networking opportunities. IEEE PES Joint Technical Committee Meeting: Provides a forum where technical committees can meet to focus on technical matters and standards the primary work of committees, subcommittees, working groups and/or task forces. IEEE PES Power Systems Conference and Exposition: Provides a venue for discussing issues and developments, as well as for highlighting key vendors with products and services essential to the multifaceted field of electric power systems. PES conducts nearly 25 conferences and meetings every year. IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Conference & Exposition: The Conference and Exposition features the world s largest display of t & d equipment and services and attracts attendees from around the world. The exposition is complemented by hundreds of panel, paper and poster sessions that are designed to enhance the knowledge base and educational experience of all who attend. Provides the latest technical thinking and insight into innovations and technologies that are advancing state-of-the art power delivery around the world. PES also conducts T & D Asia and T & D Latin America. International Electric Machines and Drives Conference: Jointly sponsored by the IEEE Power Engineering Society and the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, it provides users, designers and analysts of electric machines and drives and related power electronics and controls a forum for discussion and interaction and the presentation of technical papers.

15 PowerTech: Focuses on the topics of power-systems analysis, design, construction, control and operation; monitoring and diagnostics; information technologies as they are implemented in electric energy systems; electric energy economic considerations; and public policy implications on the planning and operation of a modern power system. PowerTech has been located in world-class destinations including: Lausanne, Switzerland; Athens, Greece; Stockholm, Sweden; and St. Petersburg, Russia. IEEE PES Middle-East Power Systems Conference (MEPCON): Provides a forum for engineers, academicians and researchers to discuss various issues in the development of the infrastructure and the technological advancements in the power sector. The event details the application of control, operation and maintenance of the power system and its components with the objective of achieving energy efficiency in power systems. Information Exchange PowerAfrica Conference and Exposition: Supported and endorsed by the Southern African Power Pool, the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, Region 8 South African Section of IEEE and the World Energy Council. It provides a structured conference with four main topic areas: 1) renewable energy development and power generation, 2) HVAC, FACTs and HVDC economical bulk power transmission, 3) distribution technologies, customer utilization, energy efficiency and quality of supply, 4) industrial power supply, automation, power electronics, instrumentation, telecommunications in power engineering, controls and machines. IEEE PES also conducts the following important events in locations around the world: International Conference on Power & Energy Engineering, Wuhan, China, PowerIndia Conference, International Conference on Power Technology, International Conference on Sustainable Energy Technologies, International Conference on Harmonics and Quality and the Power Conference for Protective Relay Engineers.
