1 President s Message Fellow Rotarians, Rotary Club of Raffles City Singapore District 3310 Chartered 13 August 1980 We attended the Inter-City Dinner meeting on the 21 st of May and were fortunate to meet our Rotary International President Ravi Ravindran! The event had more than 320 in attendance in the Shangri-La Hotel. Charter members of the Paul Harris Society (those who have pledged to donate US$1,000 every year) were recognized that evening, which included RCRC s PP Vincent Chen. PDG Chew Ghim Bok facilitated the fund-raising that evening for the Rotary Foundation, and an impressive US$792,000 was raised during the dinner meeting, surpassing the funds raised over the past year. My profound thanks to the following members who supported this event: Charter President Low Siew Joon, PP Vincent Chen, PP Percy Jeyapal, PP Eugene Lim, PE Nidhi Swarup, Rotarian (RTN) Geoff Hogg and spouse Kathy, and RTN Brian Tan, who also sponsored our Rotaractors from Raffles City and Ngee Ann Polytechnic. On a personal note, I had an amazing time catching up with all of you! Last Thursday, I attended the appreciation dinner held at the Orchard Hotel for all donors of the Cambodia project, which was spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Sentosa. Our club received a certificate of appreciation for our SGD6,000 donation to the toilet project in Pursat. A special shout out to RTN Brian Tan, who has generously contributed to this worthwhile project. Rotary International Calendar: May Youth Service Month Weeks of 15 th and 22 nd of May 2016 I would also like to thank RTN Stanley Yap and Spouse Karen Yap for opening their beautiful home to us for our dance rehearsals, which we started last Friday evening. We all had a blast! Lastly, just a gentle reminder, we will be inducting our 59 th member, Mr. Anoop Sonpar, during our lunch meeting on the 31 st of May. Please attend the meeting if your schedule permits to welcome our newest member. - Sigrid G. Zialcita Page 1 of 14
2 District 3310 Inter-City Dinner Meeting 21 st of May Below are highlights of Rotary International President Ravi Ravindran s speech during the Inter-City Dinner Meeting: 1. Daughter and son live in Singapore, which is a great city. 2. World commends good efforts of Rotary and cites examples of Rotary funds touching lives. 3. Nepal recently had a Club chartered with ALL Major Donors as Charter Members. 4. Rotary recognized worldwide as a top fund giver for humanitarian needs - rating of 96.31/100, above Lions, Jaycees etc and a market value of 950 million. 5. Do not be shy to say that Rotary helps you to network with others. Netwoking is important for fund raising. 6. We are completetly global - more global than United Nations, even present in more countries than UN. 7. Gates, Adidas, Nike, Marks and Spencers are all joint partners so GLOBAL POLIO ERADICATON COMMITTEE was created with our joint partners.this is classic example of private and public cooperation. 8. Met Pope Francis with 9200 Rotarians recently. The Pope spoke highly of Rotary's efforts to eradicate polio and what we have achieved. 9. POLIO : 360,000 cases when we first started, now 13 cases left. 10. In early days cheap vaccine was available; hence Polio Plus took root. 11. Total 2.5 billion children vaccinated, USD1.5billion spent by Rotary. Total spent with our partners is USD11 billion and balance of USD1.5 billion needed to finish the project. 12. UN CHIEF MUN KI BOON thanked Rotary CLUBS for their efforts. 13. India polio free two years ago. 14. South Asia also free. 15. Nigeria polio free. 16. Africa polio free. 17. PAKISTAN and AFGANISTAN still left. 18. Money and Taliban issues are obstacles in the 2 countries. So far, 60 health officers and police killed in Pakistan. 19. Prime Minister of PAKISTAN says he will head the project to get it done. 20. In Pakistan, there is a strong Rotary presence in town, clinics and mosques etc. to help detect signs of paralysis connected to polio. Health officers send stool samples to Rotary labs. Page 2 of 14
3 District 3310 Inter-City Dinner Meeting 21 st of May (Cont.) 21. Donations are not only about Polio. This event illustrates: Ebola hit Lagos from Liberia. Nigeria is the trade hub of Africa. Nigeria did a good job to contain it because Rotary had already set up facilities for polio and it was used by Nigeria and this saved the world from Ebola. 22. We will finish off polio, Taliban or no Taliban! 23. US measles programme had been complacent before; they stopped vacination and it returned! We cannot go the same route. 24. There is no way but forward. This is our children and our future. Whether we succeed or not is in our hands. 25. Let us truly Be a Gift to the world. Taylor created The Four-Way Test. The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions: Of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. 9 Message from the District Governor Philip Chong Dear Presidents and Fellow Rotarians, I wish to express my sincere thanks for your kind support and participation of the Inter-City meeting which has been successfully concluded last Saturday. My special appreciation and gratitude to Rotarians who have generously pledged for their contribution to the Rotary Foundation (TRF). Our kind and generous 105 PHS Charter members have started a river of alms that will flow into homes to help families throughout the world live better lives. Your kindness and generosity will help to bring water to homes where there was almost none before, provide lights to homes where once there was only darkness, heal the sight of people who have cataract, changing lives forever for children with cleft lips, provide bicycles and hostels for school children who have to travel far where the sun and rain to school, and build libraries for schools. My dear friends, your contributions to TRF are miraculous gifts that will travel far and wide across the seven seas to help humanity the world over, regardless of color and creed. Thank you once again my friends, and I pray that all of us will continue to be a gift to the world. Page 9 of 14

11 Upcoming Events What Is The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)? RLI is a grassroots coalition of Rotary districts implementing a leadership development program for "potential" leaders of Rotary CLUBS. Established in 1992, RLI has become a worldwide organization with divisions in every Continent of the world. The R.I. Board has adopted a resolution recommending RLI or similar programs to the districts and the Council on Legislation has twice recommended RLI to the Board. RLI believes that excellent CLUB leadership (all types of club leaders) is essential to the future of Rotary in a complex and fast changing world. Most Rotarians have not been exposed to the great scope of Rotary around the world and have not considered what leadership skills are necessary to move Rotary forward. RLI strongly believes that a good Rotary Club leader must know the evolution of Rotary, its current status and activities in the world and have a vision for what Rotary can be in the future. Therefore, RLI provides a three day non-consecutive basic course in both Rotary knowledge and leadership skills, especially for voluntary organizations. In addition to the specific leadership skills sessions, all the RLI sessions have a leadership component. In addition to the basic three day course, RLI holds in-depth seminars on important Rotary subjects, including leadership, for the graduates of the basic course. The mission of RLI is to have the clubs in the member districts identify those with the potential for future club leadership and *send them to RLI courses at club expense*. All member clubs may send any club Rotarian to RLI courses and any Rotarian may attend any course at his/her own initiative. The overriding goal of the courses for club Rotarians is to create ENTHUSIASM for Rotary by opening up to them the world of Rotary outside of their own clubs and also showing them the great potential of Rotary service for the benefit of the world that can be furthered with excellent leadership in our clubs. RLI is a general education program, while most Rotary International training programs are "jobspecific"; that is R.I. trains Rotarians for specific positions. RLI is not a PETS or any other district training program, but graduates of RLI bring a greatly enhanced background in Rotary when they later attend job-specific programs. Page 11 of 14
