1 DISTRICT EDITOR Diane Harper NEWSLETTER T H E F U T U R E O F R O T A R Y I S I N Y O U R H A N D S..O N E C H I L D A T A T I M E FEBRUARY is Literacy Month Issue 8 February 2010 This is a copy of the letter Ginger sent to International Rotary President, John Kenny Dear President Kenny, Rotary International: Governor Loren Harper of District 5170 received your recommendation to encourage the District Clubs to participate in Rotary s Public Image by engaging its civic leaders to proclaim a day to highlight Rotary s involvement in the local and global community. We are extremely proud to announce that District 5170 s Public Relations Campaign aligns with your recommendation. More significantly, 51 clubs in the District have successfully engaged their civic leaders and have received Proclamation Declaring an End of Polio Day from their mayors. The campaign, designed for clubs to engage their local mayors, was announced at the District Avenues of Service in October, Club presidents, Public Relation Chairs and Area Governors were provided with soft and hard copies of the campaign objective, reference materials and proclamation templates. To encourage clubs to participate, the attached Bay Area map (jpg attached) designed to highlight each club upon its success, was shown at the monthly Cabinet Meetings and posted on the District s Web-Site along recognition photos of Mayors issuing the proclamations. This effort was Phase I of the District s annual Public Relations Campaign. Phase II of the campaign will kick-off in February. No doubt, given the success of Phase I, District 5170 s goal to build Rotary s Public Image is well underway. Sincerely, Ginger Taylor McDonald, District 5170 Public Relations Chair DISTRICT CALENDAR FEBRUARY 3 CABINET MEETING FEBRUARY INTERACT PRESDIENT S RETREA FEBRUARY 28 MATCHING GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE OCT APRIL DISTRICT CONFERENCE MONTEREY INSIDE THIS ISSUE: GINGER MACDONALD 1 TURKISH FRIENDSHIP 1 AREA 5 UPDATE 2-3 STARS 3 HAITI EARTHQUAKE RE- LIEF FUND LETTER FROM ED FUTA AND GEORG KELL DID YOU KNOW? 6 DONATIONS NEEDED 7 FOR HAITI SHELTER BOXES FOR 7 HAITI 4 5 Friendship Exchange Opportunity to travel to Istanbul, Turkey" Last October, Rotarian couples from Istanbul, Turkey came on the first Friendship Exchange visit to our area. We are inviting Rotarians to go on an outbound Friendship Exchange visit to District 2420 in Istanbul, Turkey. The team will be limited to 4-5 couples. The date of the proposed exchange is for late May and the group will be there for at least 1 week. The exact date will be agreed upon with the group going. This is a great opportunity for a few couples to build friendships. Space is limited and will be on a first come basis. Your major costs will be your airfare/or miles if you have a mileage program. Our Rotarian friends in Istanbul will organize an itinerary for the participants. For more details contact Cindy Schuette kinikiasch@cruzio.com

5 ROTARY DISTRICT 5170 Letter from Edwin Futa and Georg Kell Page 5 Dear Rotarians: Rotary International s more than 32,000 clubs in 200 countries and geographic regions draw on wide range of volunteer talent and expertise to improve the quality of life for all people. Rotary s humanitarian efforts are complimented by its emphases on high ethical standards in business and all the professions. Rotary upholds such ethical standards in its Four Way Test and in the practical application of Service Above Self through countless humanitarian endeavors around the world. In a like manner, the United Nations Global Compact is a public-private initiative for businesses worldwide committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour standards, the environment, and anticorruption. The United Nations Global Compact emphasizes that business, as a primary agent driving globalization, can influence and ensure that markets, commerce, technology and finance advance in ways that benefit economies and societies everywhere. The United Nations Global Compact exists to assist the private sector in the management of increasingly complex risks and opportunities in the environmental, social and governance realms. By working with private companies and leveraging the expertise and capacities of a range of other stakeholders, the United Nations Global Compact s more than 5,200 corporate participants and stakeholders from over 130 countries seek to build a more sustainable and inclusive global economy and catalyze actions in support of broader United Nations goals including the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The United Nations Global Compact and Rotary International share the ideals of high ethical business practices, sustainable humanitarian action, and world peace and understanding. Recognizing that such similar missions can lead to fruitful collaboration, Rotary International and the United Nations Global Compact encourage: 1. Education and information sharing between Rotary clubs and districts and Global Compact Local Networks through attendance or invitations to speak at key meetings; 2. As appropriate, individual Rotary members coordinate or facilitate their own businesses to commit to the United Nations Global Compact or invite Global Compact Local Network participants to join a local Rotary club; 3. Local project implementation or collaboration particularly those addressing the Millennium Development Goals between Rotary clubs and districts and Global Compact Local Networks; and 4. Joint collaborative efforts promoting the best of corporate social responsibility practices and volunteer leadership and action at the local, district or national level. Working with the United Nations Global Compact, Rotary clubs and district can expand their impact by better understanding how high ethical standards in business, industry and society can address humanitarian concerns and enhance community development worldwide. We therefore urge you to inform clubs in your district that such opportunities exist and to encourage them to contact their Global Compact Local Network with a view to developing dialogue and mutually beneficial collaboration. Information on the UN Global Compact and its Ten Principles can be found at the following website: In addition, information on Global Compact Local Networks can be found at: In a letter similar to this one, the UN Global Compact will also encourage its Global Compact Local Networks to contact local Rotary clubs and the appropriate district governor. Through discussion, collaboration and joint cooperation, Rotary clubs and the United Nations Global Compact can foster high ethical standards, universal principles, humanitarian values and tangible humanitarian successes. Together, we can work for the benefit of all. Yours sincerely, Edwin H. Futa General Secretary Rotary International Georg Kell Executive Director United Nations Global Compact Office

6 ROTARY DISTRICT 5170 DID YOU KNOW? Page 6 Dublin Rotary inducted two new members into their club in January, Marc Bull, Loan Officer and Christopher Grundeman, Sales. Congratulations to the club and their new members. Saratoga Rotary on January 14th held the event Hockey Night at the Shark Tank. 50 Rotarians, friends and family members attended this great evening. There was lots of fellowship, a great meal and a wonderful game, BUT the Sharks lost YOU CAN T HAVE EVERYTHING! Watsonville Rotary President Georgeann ed the webmaster this photo of the Watsonville High Kids on their Ivy League tour. Not sure the kids are thinking they are "on the road" on the 40th anniversary of the death of Jack Kerouac this week. This photo looks like it was taken in Old Yard part of Harvard Yard with famous statue of old John Harvard in the background in what that hippie Bob Dylan called "The green pastures of Harvard University." Hal Hyde who spent some time there would know. Cheers. Congratulations to Area 6 Interact clubs (Independence, Piedmont Hills, and Foothill) for an outstanding event Saturday night. This annual sell-out of over 200 featured an excellent dinner (donated by Bay 101 Club), 10 diverse music and dance performances, a drawing, and all for the benefit of END POLIO NOW. City of San Jose Councilmember Kansen Chu and his wife, Daisy, attended and were impressed with the professionalism of our Interactors, the quality of the event, and the cause. He has invited the Interact club leaders to a city council meeting to acknowledge their outstanding service. This is one of many such events around our District. Tell us YOUR club's story. Rotarian and Faculty Advisors, please welcome Lindsay Marshall, Faculty Advisor for Valley Christian High School, our newest Interact club in District Interact 5170 is over 90 clubs and 6,000 Interactors engaged in community, school, environmental, and international service. Our Interact district is recognized by Rotary International as the largest and most effective in all the world. In fact, our Interactors have led an official workshop for the past 5 years at the Rotary International convention, and will do so again this year in Montreal. Many of our Interactors will make this trip to staff the Interact booth and inspire Rotarians from around the world. It is especially important to connect with your sponsoring Rotary club, Almaden Valley. Bob Pfahnl District 5170 Interact Chair Oakland East Rotary Club collected many coats before the holidays to be given to those in need in the area. Thank you Rotarians for helping to keep so many people warmer during this cold season. Campbell Rotary Club had their annual FUN, FITNESS and FELLOWSHIP walk on January 16th. They followed the Guadalupe River Trail in San Jose meeting at Coleman at 8:30 Saturday morning and walking the trail downtown toward the airport. What a great way to exercise and enjoy talking while walking with your fellow Rotarians. 7 ROTARY DISTRICT 5170 DONATIONS NEEDED FOR HAITI Page 7 ShelterBox Appeal for Haiti by Jon Winston We've all watched in horror at the devastation and suffering that has befallen those in Haiti as a result of the massive earthquake on January 12th. What are we as Rotarians doing to help? District Governor, Loren Harper, has suggested ShelterBox as the vehicle through which Rotarians of District 5170 could make a financial contribution to the Haiti relief effort. DG Harper has asked that each of the Rotarian in our district give generously, at least $20 and as much as your means allow, to the Rotarian-founded ShelterBox Program. At $1,000 per box, that's more that 80 boxes. Each box provides shelter and supplies for 10 people for periods of weeks or months. Our very own Keith Henderson, as you know, is one of just a handful of trained ShelterBox deployment specialists in the US. Keith has been visiting the other clubs in our area and reports they have been extremely generous. For example, the Capitola-Aptos club raised several thousand dollars in their meeting last week, the Santa Cruz Friday club gave generously, and Watsonville passed the hat and raised over $2,500. Keith will be giving a ShelterBox presentation to our club at the Tuesday January 26 th meeting. He will also be looking to each of us to make our contribution to the relief effort. Please bring your checkbook and give as generously as you can.
