Family Month celebrates the family of Rotary, which, in addition to individual Rotarians, includes all of those who are involved in Rotary's work from Rotary Foundation program alumni to participants in Rotary youth programs in thousands of communities around the world. Whatever you celebrate: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza or the New Year, may you and your family receive all you wish for this year and next. May we have peace on earth, no more hunger, literacy for everyone, and good health around the globe. Laile E. Bangkok 2012 CONVENTION BREAKOUT SESSIONS One of the most important parts of any RI Convention are the numerous breakout sessions

This year for club leaders there will be sessions in Membership Diversity, use of Social Media to strengthen clubs, and Best

In all, there will be a total of 54 different sessions... Something for everyone.

There will be pre and post convention tours as well as half-day and full -day tours during the convention.

2 Bangkok 2012 CONVENTION BREAKOUT SESSIONS One of the most important parts of any RI Convention are the numerous breakout sessions which are held throughout the event. This year for club leaders there will be sessions in Membership Diversity, use of Social Media to strengthen clubs, and Best Practices for Club Web Sites to name just a few. Various Rotarian Action Groups will present sessions including Planning for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Projects; How RAGs Support Rotary s Disease Prevention Area of Focus; and A Changing World: Literacy, Education and the Future of Humanity. In all, there will be a total of 54 different sessions... Something for everyone. PRE AND POST-CONVENTION TOURS AND CITY TOURS A wide variety of tours for convention attendees have been planned by the HOC. There will be pre and post convention tours as well as half-day and full -day tours during the convention. Here are some examples of each. HALF-DAY CITY TOURS: For the half-day tours, there will be two tours per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. A report received on November 21 states that the flooding is restricted to an area near the Chao Praya River. According to local sources, the worst of the crisis is over and the waters are receding. The RI hotel area has not been affected and either has the Impact Convention Center. You can visit the RI web site for flooding updates and the latest convention news. NEXT MONTH... 4 Message from the RI President Kalyan Banerjee RI president makes membership a priority It s every Rotarian s responsibility to boost club membership and ensure the future of Rotary. No member takes this duty more seriously than RI President Kalyan Banerjee. The more members we have, the more Rotary can do, Banerjee says. Rotarians must refer new members. Our current annual growth is 5 percent, but if every two years each Rotarian brought in a new member, our membership would grow by 50 percent. Despite a busy schedule, Banerjee continues to find potential members during his travels as RI president. Today you can recruit anybody, anywhere, he says. I might meet someone on a flight to Los Angeles or Bangkok who would make a good member, and if I do, I refer that person. Follow Banerjee s example today by referring a family member, friend, or business associate. The online form has been updated, so it s even easier now to refer a member. Once you ve answered a few questions, RI headquarters will forward the potential member s information to the appropriate district leader, who will share it with area clubs. If a club deems the candidate a good fit, it will contact the potential member and invite him or her to learn more. Candidates can also complete the form to express their interest in joining a Rotary club. Rotarians who are relocating or returning to Rotary after an absence may use the form to find a new club. If you want to recommend someone for membership in your Rotary club, contact your club secretary or complete the form in How to Propose a New Member. Make it easy for potential members to find your club by embedding Club Locator and Share Your Passion for Rotary ads in your website or newsletter. Can t find your own club on Club Locator? 6 Rotary Club of Orchid Island gives to the Community in Indian River County On Thanksgiving the Rotary Club of Orchid Island donated enough food to serve 110 families and 400 persons in Fellsmere. This event was coordinated with the Boys and Girls Club of Indian River County. Pictured below are club members getting ready to distribute the food. Orchid Island gave 66 ten year old children bicycles for Christmas. The Boys and Girls Club of Indian River Country selected the children from Fellsmere, Sebastian and Vero Beach, based on need. The members of the club worked with Wal- Mart to receive the bicycles and helmets at cost. Over $6000 was donated by club members and other donors to make these gifts possible. Bikes, club members and children receiving them are pictured below. 6

7 ROTARY CLUBS JOIN FORCES FOR HABITAT PROJECT Rotary Clubs of Stuart and Stuart-Sunrise (Palm City) recently joined forces with a Habitat for Humanity at its construction site of two houses located in the Port Salerno south of Stuart. Both clubs worked hands-on doing electrical work, putting up dry wall, and covering the entire new roof with asphalt shingles. A totally professional job by enthusiastic volunteers. Submitted by Reed Smith, RC of Stuart PR chair Here are Rotarians Francine Beckstead and Pat Tobin of the RC of Stuart preparing to install the last piece of drywall to the closet they built themselves. A talented crew! Catherine Griffin, President, Rotary Club of Port St. Lucie, had a goal to help those in need in St. Lucie County. She asked her Club to assist the Harvest Outreach Center in Fort Pierce, FL by bringing non-perishable items to the weekly meeting. Since July, the Club has collected over 244 pounds of non-perishable goods, and has donated over $400 during a tour of the Outreach facility and a Thanksgiving Drive for the center. Catherine states, "We have developed a sound relationship with the Harvest Outreach Center which I'm confident will continue well after my term has ended. It's so rewarding for me to deliver these items once a week and have a feeling of accomplishment for those in need in my community. I'm so proud of my Rotary Club and its support toward this mission." 7

A peace pole, provided by the Viera Rotary Club is located near the Rotary Pavilion at Viera Regional Park. The 8-foot pole has the phrase May Peace Prevail on Earth written vertically on each side, in four languages. In conjunction with the dedication of the peace pole the club sponsored a poster contest from all Viera elementary schools. Worldwide, there have been 200,00 0peace poles installed in 200 countries. Winning posters: Peace Net The theme for this year s Rotary-UN Day, Rotary and the United Nations: Reaching Within to Embrace Humanity, captured the spirit of the RI theme as well as the mutually beneficial working relationship of our two leading worldwide organizations. The annual gathering was held 5 November at UN headquarters in New York City. After the day s events, which were planned and hosted by Rotary International s representatives to the United Nations and other organizations, Rotary Peace Centers alumni Rochelle Arms (USAL, ) and Arthur Romano (Bradford, ) skillfully engaged the hearts and minds of Rotarians and guests at the 2011 Rotary Peace Centers Dinner, held that evening at the Millennium UN Plaza Hotel. Their passionate work in local peace education initiatives, restorative justice, and nonviolent conflict resolution offered Major Donors a glimpse into the causes Rotary Peace Fellows and alumni advance each day.
